1 May 2017 Weather Summary P a g e 1 May 2017 Beaufort Weather Station Summary Logistics May was the first full month of operation of the MaREI weather observing system (WOS) located on the grounds of the Beaufort Building (Ringaskiddy, Cork). This was also the first full month where observations were logged every 5 minutes i.e. 8,928 records for May, based on > 980,000 observations. Communications between the ISS and console (as outlined in the April Summary) are handled via wireless radio receiver, which can occasionally result in data packet drops. Of the 8,928 records available for the month of May, 8805 (98.6%) are valid i.e. records based on >1 observation for the preceding 5 minute period. This implies approximately 10 hours for the month are missing data. This gap appears on the night of the 2 nd of May and lasted until the early morning of the 3 rd of May ( hrs). The table below highlights packet receipt statistics for the month by the wireless receiver. Drops indicate where no data were received for a 5-minute interval. ISS Packet Receipt (%) May-17 Drops 1.38% < % % % % Communications overall are proving effective with reliable transmission from the ISS. While data gaps are inconvenient, there are many ways to handle them, one simple method for example would be linear interpolation between pairs of observed values: xgap[n] = ( x 2 x 1 n 2 n 1. n) + x where n is the elapsed interval (since n 1 ) and x is the previous interval value, this is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1 below Fig. 1 TOP: Schematic illustration of linear interpolation method for gap filling BOTTOM: example of application to temperature data gap 2 nd May 3 rd May 2017

2 May 2017 Weather Summary P a g e 2 Weather Summary There was a low pressure system extending over Ireland towards the end of April / start of May however this began to give way to an anti-cyclonic conditions resulting in mild, calm and dry weather for the opening days of May (1-10 th ). A lowpressure system then moved in from the southeast on the 11 th, was established by the 12th, resulting in increased wind speeds, and rain. An Atlantic regime then persisted for the remainder of the month with a number of fronts passing over the area with an associated drop in pressure and winds predominantly from the west. Met Éireann issued two weather warnings during this period both relating to rainfall amounts, May status Orange for the South of the country and May status Yellow, also for the south of the country. Status Orange Criteria 50mm 70mm in 24 hrs 40mm 50mm in 12 hrs 30mm 40mm in 6 hrs Status Yellow Criteria 30mm 50mm in 24 hrs 25mm 40mm in 12 hrs 20mm 30mm in 6 hrs Temperature Overall Warm The highest temperature recorded during the month was 22.2 C, the lowest was 5.2 C. The mean temperature for the month was 13.1 C. The Highest Diurnal Temperature Range (DTR) was 10.7 C, the lowest DTR was 2.1 C, mean DTR for the month was 6.6 C. Fig. 2 below summarises the frequency of outdoor air temperature records for May. 3 April 2017 Weather Summary P a g e 3 Wind Overall Low Mean wind speeds were overall low for the month at 2 ms -1 (3.8 knots, 7.2 kmh -1 ) though the frictional bias due to the proximity of the surface and surrounding roughness elements (highlighted in April summary) should be remembered. The highest consecutive gusty days were during the first week of May. Gusts during this period reach a maximum of 14.8 ms -1 (20 knots, 37.1 kmh -1 ). Wind direction was somewhat variable due to the changing synoptic regimes, generally winds dominated from the SSE and WNW during anti-cyclonic and cyclonic conditions respectively. The dominant direction for the month was WNW see Fig. 3 below. Precipitation Overall dry, but for a one week period, heavy rain on one day In total 9 days during the month observed rainfall. Of the 9 days with recorded rain, 4 saw daily accumulations < 2mm, of the remaining 5, there was only 1 day with accumulations > 20mm in a 24 hour period. The wettest day was Monday 15 th of May, with 31.4mm of rain. The second wettest day was Saturday May 27 th. Both of these days more or less coincided with the weather warnings issued by Met Éireann. The longest consecutive period with rain was 7 days (May 13 th to May 19 th inclusive), in total 44mm of rain fell during this period or 82% of the total amount recorded in May.
