1 Arizona Climate Summary June 2012 Summary of conditions for May 2012 May 2012 Temperature and Precipitation Summary May 1 st 16 th : May began with a surface cold front sweeping across the western states bringing windy conditions to the northern parts of Arizona, but there was not enough surface moisture present to generate any precipitation. Clear skies and near normal to slightly warmer than normal temperatures were present through the first week. By the 8 th, a low pressure system moved across central and southern Arizona and New Mexico. The system intensified as it tapped into some moisture from the gulf aiding in the development of showers and thunderstorms over central and southern Arizona on the 9 th and 10 th. Rainfall totals were impressive in some areas, but most of the heavy precipitation was isolated. Davis Monthan AFB had 1.05, Douglas had 0.92, Sierra Vista had 0.59, Bisbee had 0.40, Tempe had 0.20, East Mesa had 0.60, Phoenix and Payson had 0.03, Tucson and northern Arizona had no precipitation. Warm, dry air replaced the moist cooler air after the low pressure system moved eastward out of the state. Temperatures began to steadily rise over the next few days and remained well above average for much of Arizona from the 10 th -16 th. The storm track stayed well into the northern U.S. and nothing but warm air and clear skies were seen over Arizona. May 17 th 30 th : Above normal temperatures remained in place through the 17 th and a weak surface cold front swept through the area on the 18 th and 19 th which helped bring temperatures back down around normal for most of the state. High pressure built back in over the northern part of the state from the 20 th -23 rd bringing temperatures well above normal yet again. However, relief from the heat finally occurred over a 5 day stretch from the 24 th -28 th as an upper level trough deepened southward causing high temperatures to decrease well below normal. Phoenix stayed below 100 o F for this stretch of 5 days and recorded a daily high temperature of a comfortable 82 o F on the 26 th. Flagstaff recorded a high temperature of 57 o F and Tucson recorded a high temperature of 85 o F on the 26 th. The relief across the state didn t last long as high pressure built over Arizona from the 27 th -31 st and temperatures once again increased each day to well above normal across the state. Phoenix recorded a high temperature of 109 o F on the 31 st, Sedona recorded a high temperature of 99 o F on the 31 st and Buckskin Mountain and Yuma AP both recorded high temperatures of 113 o F. 7 May 2012 Temperature, Dew Point, Wind Speed, and Precipitation Maps are based on preliminary data from the National Weather Service, the Arizona Meteorological Network (AZMet), operated by the University of Arizona College of Agriculture Cooperative Extension and the RAWS (Remote Automated Weather Station) network operated by the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service and the CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow) Network. Average nighttime temperatures ranged from 26 o F at Alpine to 90 o F at Goodyear. Average daytime temperatures ranged from 64 o F at Sunrise Mountain and Colombine to 106 o F at Safford. Precipitation values ranged from 0 in many places in the northern Arizona to 1.75 at Tubac. 7
8 Average monthly dew points ranged from 4 o F at Carr in southeastern Arizona to 46 o F at Yuma South. Average winds were light, with 13 mph as the highest average at Flagstaff and Tweed s Point. The highest peak wind gust was 67 mph at Tweed s Point in northwestern Arizona. This month we have wind barbs to represent the peak winds. The barbs are like arrows with feathers at the end to show the wind speed. The end with the feathers is pointing in the direction the winds blow from, as they blow into the station. One half barb is 5 mph, a full barb is 10 mph, and a pennant is 50 mph. 8

10 May minimum temperatures were below average in far eastern Arizona and an isolated area of western Yavapai County. Otherwise, minimum temperatures were above average especially in Maricopa County extending north into eastern Yavapai County and most of southeastern Arizona extending up to the Mogollon Rim. Average maximum temperatures were 2-4 o F above normal for most of the state and especially into the high desert areas of northeastern Arizona. Only one storm system moved through the state this month that produced precipitation. The southeastern and south central parts of Arizona did receive decent amounts of precipitation. Portions of Pima, Santa Cruz, and Cochise counties received % above normal precipitation for May from the heavy rain producing storms of May 9 th. Other than the storm event on May 9 th, most of the northern and western parts of the state were dry throughout the month which is not uncommon as May is usually one of the driest months of the year. 10

12 Calendar Year 2012 Since January, overnight temperatures have ranged greatly from 3-4 o F below normal to 3-4 o F above normal. Maricopa, Coconino, Gila, and Greenlee counties were the warmest and Yavapai, Apache and central Navajo counties were the coolest. The pattern is quite localized. Daytime temperatures were less variable, but have generally been 1 to 5 o F warmer than normal across most of the state with the warmest spots in central Navajo, western Coconino and parts of Apache counties. The warm conditions across the north are a bit unusual as the northern counties have had more frequent cold fronts passing through, though not much precipitation has resulted from those storms. Precipitation since the first of the year has been virtually non-existent. Only the southern White Mountains have had near average precipitation. Most of the state has had less than 70% of normal and the southwest deserts have received less than 25% of normal precipitation. 12

14 Water Year 2012 (Oct Sep ) While the early part of the water year was cold and wet, conditions since January have continued to warm and remain dry, resulting in patches of colder than average temperatures as well as warmer than average temperatures. Both nighttime lows and daytime highs have been quite variable around the state, 0 to 3 degrees colder than normal or 0 to 3 degrees warmer than normal. Precipitation has been scarce for the water year most of the state has recorded less than 70% of average with the exception of western Pima County. Maricopa, southern Mohave, Cochise, and northern Apache counties have received less than 50% of average precipitation since October. These dry conditions could result in an active wildfire season as we enter the normal dry spring season from June through June. 14
