Weekly Weather Flash July 24 August 6 US THIS WEEK: The West Returns to Sweltering Heat; the Plains and South See Storms A LOOK AHEAD: Cooler in the South and Northwest; Showers Across the South Bring Relief from the Heat Europe THIS WEEK: Central and Northern Europe than Last Year; Rain Expected in the Central and Northwest Regions A LOOK AHEAD: Most Regions, Especially in Central Europe, Cooler than Last Year; Rain Expected in the North
US WEEK OF JULY Suncare Retail implications: In the West and along the East Coast, demand will surge for heat-relief items such as suncare, sandals, fans and other summery products. The Plains and the South will see strong demand for rainwear due to storms. Last year this week, the US saw dry and warm weather: It was the warmest and driest final week of July since The West sees excessive heat: Regions from the California valleys to the Rockies will be much warmer than last year and normal, with temperatures exceeding 100 F. Locations across the Northwest will see temperatures rising through the 90s during the week. East Coast stays hot: Regions across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast will continue to swelter, with temperatures hovering between 95 F and 105 F. The Plains will see relief from the heat: The Plains will see more seasonal temperatures compared with the blistering heat of the past week. The Southern Plains and Deep South will continue to see warm temperatures, but can expect a slight cooling trend throughout the week, with temperatures cooler than last year and normal overall. Storms in the Plains and the South: Showers and storms will move from the Plains to the East during the second half of the week. The Ohio Valley will see the heaviest storms. Coastal Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi will see very heavy rain caused by tropical moisture throughout much of the week. 2
US WEEK OF JULY 31 AUGUST 6 Air Conditioners Retail implications: In the Central and Western US, hot weather will boost demand for cold drinks, shorts and suncare. Wet and cool weather in the Southwest and Plains will weaken demand for summery goods, but increase demand for rainwear. Last year this week, the US trended warmer than normal: Temperatures were warmer than normal, with heat focused across the Southern Tier of the country. Hot for most regions except the Pacific Northwest: Most regions in the US will see average temperatures that are higher than last year. Eastern locations will start the week seasonable to cool, then become hot again midweek. Most Western regions will be warmer than normal and last year. The Pacific Northwest will see a return to cooler temperatures. The South will be cooler: The Southern Tier will experience a reprieve from the heat seen in July, with temperatures slightly below last year and normal. The Southeast will see tropical rains and cooler weather. The Central Plains will start and end the week slightly cooler than last year and normal. Monsoon showers expected: Monsoonal showers will develop across the Southwest and move out into the Plains for much of the week. 3
Europe WEEK OF JULY Norway Germany Retail implications: Higher temperatures in most areas will keep demand strong for summery products such as soft drinks, shorts and fans. Rainy weather in the North will boost demand for rainwear. Varying temperatures: The weather across Europe will vary during the week. Temperatures will be up and down early in the week, but the week will finish with a warming trend. The Central region is showery: Central Europe will be covered by showers for much of the week. By the end of the week, the rain will move into the northwest part of the continent. 4
Europe WEEK OF JULY 31 AUGUST 6 Ireland Portugal Retail implications: Warm weather in the South will stimulate demand for seasonal products such as soft drinks and cold tea. Retail traffic in the North will be affected by showers. Cooler than last year overall: Temperatures will continue to trend up and down in the North and South. The North will see temperatures close to normal, while the South will be warmer than normal. Compared with last year, the continent will be cooler overall. Weather will be showery: Bands of showers will push across the continent through midweek. Later in the week, regions across Scandinavia will see showers, while the rest of the continent will see drier weather. 5
