1 Town of Superior SUPERIOR NEWS Volume Issue Winter 2017 SWIMMING POOL The Town Council will be discussing the future of the swimming pool either closing the facility or continuing to run the facility at the December 11, 2017 meeting. This summer Roger Wasley reported that to keep the pool water at a certain level due to the leaks makeup water was added 24 hours per day 7 days a week. The total amount of water added over during the time the pool was open was over 2,000,000 gallons. The constant adding of water to the pool impacts the costs of running the pool ( i.e. increased cost of chemicals, propane, electricity) and the cost of water system operations (i.e. increased electricity costs to pump the water, treatment costs, repairs, etc.). After the pool closed, it drained itself in two weeks. The pool has been filled for winter with 150,000 gallons of water. Also, water must be added weekly to maintain the water level for the winter to protect the basin from frost heave. This past fiscal year the pool revenues covered 17% of the expenses paid to operate the pool. Revenues decreased 5% this past year from the year before. The difference between revenues ($6,962) and daily operating expenses ($41,400) is paid from Town resident property taxes ($34,438). The Town Council is asking for public input from the taxpayers of the Town of Superior. 2 Page 2 SUPERIOR NEWS FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS To date, your firefighters have responded to 37 calls (we responded to a total of 40 last year), so we re hopeful that things stay quiet through the end of We had our share of vegetation fires, car wrecks, car fires, but only one house fire. Looking back on the year, and all we experienced during the Sunrise/Burdette Fires, we can count ourselves fortunate to have no lives or homes lost. It certainly wasn t the case in other parts of the country. I m very thankful for the Incident Management Teams we worked alongside and especially all the firefighters, from near and far, who traveled here to assist our community at a time of great need. Winter weather and winter driving conditions arrived early, so please be safe out on the roads this season. Your firefighters are wishing you all a safe and happy winter Accomplishments This past year saw four members being certified in Basic Wildland Firefighting. We brought in Fire Instructors from MSU for Live fire training in the mobile burn trailer twice, and also for pumper operator training and driving for our members. We have installed 299 smoke alarms in 110 of our regions homes. We have installed 12 of our 25 Carbon Monoxide alarms, and 10 of our 15 Bed Shakers (a companion to smoke alarms for the hearing impaired). The smoke alarms were provided by the American Red Cross of Missoula. The bed shakers from a $2,500 grant from FM Global. The Carbon Monoxide alarms came from Kiddie (who also manufacture the smoke alarms from ARC). The new Montana DNRC 2800 gallon water tender arrived in time for the fire season. The firefighters really like it (maybe in part due to it being military surplus, it has cup holders and gun racks in the cab). We are currently working with DNRC on a surplus vehicle (2000 Chevy extended cab 4x4 pick-up truck with 66,000 miles) that we can put into service as the duty chief vehicle that can be passed back and forth to whomever is providing coverage on a 24 hours a day basis. This is a big relief for me, as I have been using my personal vehicle and gas for two years now. The front runner they found is located on an air force base in Utah. We are in the process of paying to get it transported here to us soon. Then we ll make a few needed repairs, get a canopy to protect the equipment we carry, and transfer the mobile radio from my truck and it will be ready for service. Plans for 2018 As usual the firefighter s first meeting in January, we will review our accomplishments and what we didn t accomplish in Then we ll determine our goals for what we want to accomplish in We are always open to new members and any input from our community. Snowplowing will be done in the following order: 1. Schools 2. Avenues and Streets 3. Alley s upon request Right of ways are done by request and as time is available. If vehicles are moved the snow will be pushed as close to the property as possible. EXTRAS The schedule for the Council meeting Agenda and council packets is: All items to be on the Agenda and information for the council packets must be to the Town Clerk by the Thursday before the meeting at 2:00 p.m. This allows the information to be put in the packet and the Agenda posted. Someone may speak at a meeting about a non-agenda item during public comment. The Council can not take action on matters brought up under the public comment period until the item is scheduled on the Agenda for the next meeting. Agendas will be posted at the Town Hall, Post Office and Castles. The Agenda will also be posted on the Website. FREE SMOKE ALARMS Superior Volunteer Fire Department is still actively working throughout the community installing smoke alarms in area homes. The smoke alarms (with ten year batteries) are supplied by the American Red Cross and SVFD members provide installation. We can install up to three alarms per home. 5 Page 5 Winter Safety Tips Before winter approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit: Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways. Sand to improve traction. Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment. Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home. Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm. Extra food and water stored for emergency purposes only. Make a Family Communications Plan. To know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency. Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). Minimize travel. Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water. Winterize Your Vehicle Antifreeze levels - ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing. Battery and ignition system - should be in top condition and battery terminals should be clean. Brakes - check for wear and fluid levels. Exhaust system - check for leaks and crimped pipes and repair or replace as necessary. Carbon monoxide is deadly and usually gives no warning. Fuel and air filters - replace and keep water out of the system by using additives and maintaining a full tank of gas. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing. Heater and defroster - ensure they work properly. Lights and flashing hazard lights - check for serviceability. Oil - check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures and do not lubricate as well. Thermostat - ensure it works properly. Windshield wiper equipment - repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid level. Install good winter tires - Make sure the tires have adequate tread. Update the emergency kits in your vehicles with: a shovel flashlight extra batteries battery powered radio water blanket(s) windshield scraper and small broom snack food matches necessary medications extra hats, socks and mittens first aid kit with pocket knife tow chain or rope road salt and sand booster cables emergency flares cell phone and car charger for cell phone fluorescent distress flag when traveling tell a trusted adult your travel plans Freezing Rain - Rain that freezes when it hits the ground, creating a coating of ice on roads, walkways, trees and power lines. Sleet - Rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground. Winter Weather Advisory - Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous. Winter Storm Watch - A winter storm is possible in your area. Winter Storm Warning - A winter storm is occurring or will soon occur in your area. Blizzard Warning - Sustained winds or frequent gusts to 35 miles per hour or greater and considerable amounts of falling or blowing snow (reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile) are expected to prevail for a period of three hours or longer.

Identify the tree s condition before purchase. Needles should be green a flexible. If you can break them easily, they are dried out. Bounce the tree on the ground on its trunk. If a lot of needles fall off, it is dried out. Don t keep the tree up too long, as it dries out it becomes more of a hazard. Keep the stand filled with water at all times. Do not set a tree up near a heat source, including heating ducts and fire-places. Dispose of it properly. Do not put branches or needles in a fireplace or woodstove. If you are using an artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant.
