THE VIPER ATV PLOW SYSTEM SKU : SY_PL50(BK, RE, YE) SY_PL54(BK, RE, YE), SY_PL60(BK, RE, YE) Industrial Blvd Rogers, MN I. THE VIPER PLOW System Overview The VIPER PLOW system is broken up into four separate kits. This allows the user to build a plow system to his/her liking for the specific vehicle they own. A user must have one of each type of kit in order to have a working plow system. The four types of required kits are: a plow blade, a plow base, a plow mounting kit, a plow lift mechanism. We suggest one of our VIPER WINCHES for use with the VIPER PLOW, but our plow is compatible with any winch. II. THE PLOW BLADE VIPER currently offers the plow blade in 50, 54 and 60 widths. These are perfect for lighter jobs and for heavier jobs where more area is covered in a single pass. Our straight blade is ideal for general plowing, or plowing under various conditions such as leveling or needing to push material to either side of the vehicle. Angling the Blade To angle the plow blade, stop the vehicle on a level solid ground and place it in neutral or turn off the engine. Engage the vehicle parking brake. Walk and stand in front of the blade. Grip the black metal handle located in the middle in the plow and pull handle toward the blade. Grab the outside edge of the plow blade and angle toward the desired position. When in the approximate location, release the handle and engage it in one of the five available positions closest to the desired position. If you have difficulty angling the plow, try angling it with the blade an inch or two off the ground. WARNING! Always be sure the handle is fully engaged before plowing. In some instances, it may be necessary to push the handle forward to engage it into the plow base. Failure to properly engage the plow may result in loss of vehicle control which can lead to vehicle damage, personal injury, or even death. Spring Tension The plow springs should be properly tensioned before plowing. The plow springs should be taut and the eyebolts should be under tension. If an eyebolt is feels loose feeling or sloppy, tighten the springs. To tighten the springs, undo the two 5/16 hex nuts on each eyebolt. Tighten the nut closest to the spring until the eyebolt is under tension. Tighten the top nut firmly onto the bottom one. If you have any questions of how the 5/16 nuts should be installed on the plow, reference the installation instructions that came with the plow blade. Check the plow spring tension before plowing and after each instance the plow blade folds over from hitting a stationary object. If slack in the eyebolt is detected, retighten the springs. Doing so will maintain plow performance (toll free) 1 411@motoalliance.com
WARNING! Never remove the springs and hard fixture the blade to the plow base or vehicle. Doing so will prevent the plow from folding over during an impact with a low-lying object and can possibly damage the plow or vehicle, or eject the rider from the vehicle causing serious injury or death. Adjusting blade attack angle ATV s have three attack angle positions. Use the most forward position for softer materials, and the most rearward position for harder materials such as ice. To adjust the angle of attack, be sure the vehicle is stopped on level solid ground with the parking brake on and the engine turned off. Remove the plow springs and eyebolts from the plow blade by removing the two 5/16 nuts on the end of each eyebolt. Rotate the plow blade forward until it folds completely over and lays flat on the ground. Remove the two 3/8 socket bolts on either side of the plow base and reposition them in the desired hole location. Tighten the 3/8 bolts securely, fold the blade back into its upright position, and reinstall the springs per the blade installation instructions. Plow Skids Each blade kit comes with a pair of plow skids. The purpose of the plow skids is to increase the life of the wear bar and to help minimize damage caused by the plow blade on the scraping surface such as decorative driveways. The plow skid can also assist in plowing material off of gravel surfaces by floating the edge of the blade just above the gravel. For level surfaces, adjust the plow skids level with the edge of the wear bar on the plow blade. For uneven rocky surfaces the skids should be adjusted such that the edge of the wear bar will float over the rocky surface during plowing. Wear Bars The wear bar is the large rectangular metal bar that attaches to the bottom of the plow blade with a series of 3/8 shoulder bolts and nylock nuts. The wear bar takes the brunt of the force and wear to help increase the life of the plow blade. Wear bars will need to be replaced after excessive wearing. MotoAlliance has replacement wear bars available at NOTICE: Never plow without a wear bar installed. The wear bar not only prevents wear on the blade itself, but is structurally important to the rigidity of the blade. Plowing without a wear bar will cause significant damage to the plow blade. III. THE VIPER PUSH TUBES (plow base) Push tubes (plow base) are the two long round tubes welded by a flat plate at one end and a pair of flanges on the other. The push tubes attach to a vehicle specific plow mount located under the vehicle. To attach the tubes to the plow mount on the vehicle, turn the vehicle off and place the parking brake on. Position the tube flanges directly underneath the vehicle below the plow mount. Lift the push tube flanges into the plow mount and terminate the flanges to the mount by placing a clip pin through both holes on either side. Attach the lift mechanism of your choice. To remove the plow from the vehicle, remove the clip pins and slide the plow out of the way. IV. VIPER PLOW MOUNTING SYSTEMS (toll free) 2 411@motoalliance.com
The plow mount for your vehicle attaches directly to the vehicle and connects the plow system to the vehicle. VIPER ATV Center Mounted plow mounts disperse the force of impact to the sturdiest part of the ATV, preventing damage to the front end or other vehicle parts from sudden impact. Because vehicles come in a variety of shapes and sizes, VIPER has created vehicle specific plow mounts for specific models years. Call us at MotoAlliance at or see for more details. V. LIFTING MECHANISMS MotoAlliance offers a variety of VIPER winches from lbs. The winch can be used to raise/lower any of the ATV plow configurations and is the best option for persons using a VIPER plow with a utility vehicle. Connect the winch to the plow by clipping the supplied clevis hook to the permanently welded U- Bolt on the frame of the push tubes. Downward Drift: Internal Brakes and Nesting The VIPER internal braking system for the MX3500-MX5000 and all ELITE series winches is dynamic and mechanical, and will hold your plow in place indefinitely. The MX2000-MX3000 winches may, over time, have a different braking system that like most winches this size will lose some of their braking capacity and cause a downward drift of the blade. If using a winch of this size, you can extend the life of the braking system by avoiding putting heavy loads in a fixed position for an extended period of time. Nesting occurs when the winch cable becomes messily wrapped around the winch drum. When this occurs, the cable will slowly tighten around the drum when the plow is in the up position. As a result, the plow will slowly creep downward when in the up position. To fix nesting, pull the winch cable out until all the disorganized wraps are pulled off the drum. Winch the cable back in taut around the drum using safe winching techniques as described in your winch manual. WARNING! Check the winch for any issues related to downward drift before plowing. If the plow creeps down low enough, the blade may hit a stationary object, ejecting the rider from the vehicle and causing serious injury or death. Winch Cable Integrity After frequent uses, the winch cable will begin to fray and require replacement. Check the winch cable prior to plowing or winching. If the cable is frayed, replace the winch cable with a new one. MotoAlliance offers a Plow Strap System designed specifically to resist wear from the steep angle that occurs between the fairlead and the plow. Made with the patented AmSteel -Blue synthetic cable and a 1 ½ nylon strap, this system stands up to repeated use in one small area that occurs during plowing and distributes the weight of your plow over a larger area than that of a standard winch cable, thus extending the life of your plow lift system. We highly recommend this product for plowing and winching. WARNING! Always check the winch cable before plowing. Failure to do so may cause the plow to drop suddenly from the up position and impact a low-lying object, potentially ejecting the rider from the vehicle and causing serious injury or death. Always replace winch cables that are fraying or worn (toll free) 3 411@motoalliance.com
Maximum Load Your plow system is designed to work with a maximum load of 500lbs. Any more than that and you can damage or destroy your ATV and cause harm to yourself. You should also never lift the plow so high that it might compress against the vehicle frame. To avoid these circumstances, be familiar with the lift height of the blade and do not lift the top edge of the blade above the headlights of the vehicle. Additionally, if the front suspension of the vehicle bottoms out while lifting the plow blade with material in it, there is too much material in the blade. Back the vehicle up to dump the material, the lift the blade. WARNING! Do not remove the hook from the end of the winch cable. The hook prevents the end of the winch cable from being sucked into the roller-fairlead. Removal of the hook increases the chance that fingers or other extremities may be pulled into the roller-fairlead causing personal injury. Leave the winch hook on and always follow safe winching techniques. In addition, never winch with the cable outside the fairlead. Doing so can result in severe vehicle damage and cable wear that can cause the winch cable to break suddenly and potentially cause destructive vehicle damage and major injury or death to riders and bystanders. Always route the cable through the fairlead before winching. Finally, the plow is meant only for moving snow, sand, gravel and other comparable materials. Misuse of the plow may result in severe injury and/or damage to your off-road vehicle and plow. Moto-Alliance is not responsible in any way for injury or damage related to improper plow usage (toll free) 4 411@motoalliance.com
Before You Begin This kit also requires a vehicle specific Plow Mounting kit and a lifting device such as a VIPER winch, for raising and lowering the plow. 6 IV. Installation 1. Assemble the plow lever arm per figure 1. Run a 10mm diameter shoulder bolt through the lever arm side and out the center hole in the plow base. Terminate with an 8mm diameter lock nut. Tighten until the shoulder screw is firmly against the plow base. Latch lever should rotate freely. 2. Attach two socket screws to the side flanges of the plow base as shown in figure 1. Place the socket screw in one of the three holes in the side flange and place the other socket screw in the same location on the opposite side. Terminate with a 10mm diameter lock nut. Note: It is recommended to first place the socket screw in the middle-lower hole in the side flange of the plow base. Use the hole closest to the blade for less plow undercut, and the hole furthest from the plow blade for more plow undercut. 3. Attach the wear bar to the plow blade as shown in figure 2. Place 10mm diameter carriage bolts through each of the square holes in the wear bar and through their respective holes on the blade. Terminate with a 10mm diameter lock nut. 4. Attach the plow blade to the plow base as shown in figure 3. Place a 27mm shim washer on 16mm diameter carriage bolt. Run a 16mm diameter hex bolt through the large retainer washer, rib bushing, then through the plow blade and base. The rib bushing should rest inside the large hole in the side of the plow. Terminate with a 16mm diameter lock nut. Back off the torque if the plow blade doesn t rotate freely around the plow base (toll free) 6 411@motoalliance.com
5. Assemble the plow springs as shown in figure 4. Hook the spring to the rear side of flange. Hook the spring to 8mm diameter eyebolt. Slide eyebolt into small hole on center bent flange on plow blade. Terminate eyebolt with an 8mm diameter nut. Tighten the 8mm nut until there is tension on the spring (i.e. it is difficult to remove the spring from the eyebolt). Once the desired tension is determined, terminate the eyebolt with a second 8mm diameter nut and tighten it against the first 8mm diameter nut. If installed correctly, the nuts should not be able to rotate off the end of the eyebolt. 6. Attach the heavy-duty plow skids to the plow blade. Slide the skid into the skid sleeve toward the edges of the plow blade. Terminate with a skid pin by running the pin through one of the three skid sleeve holes and through the desired skid hole. The skid height can be adjusted in 5/32 increments by placing the skid pin through different holes in the skid sleeve. Be sure to lock the skid pin when completed to prevent losing the pin and skid during plowing. NOTE: Set the skids higher than the edge of the plow blade for gravel and decorative surfaces. Set the skids at plow edge level for pavement and concrete surfaces. Failure to use the skids can result in scratches to the roadway surface and reduced wear bar life. Installation is now complete; please proceed to the next section (toll free) 7 411@motoalliance.com
