5 Mercury -Mercury is the smallest/innermost planet of the solar system -a person on Mercury would weigh 38% of their weight on Earth -a Mercury day is 176 Earth days -it does not possess any moons or rings

7 Venus - The third brightest object in Earth s sky after the Sun and Moon - Sometimes referred to as Earth s sister planet because of the close similarity in size and since it is the closest planet to Earth - Astronomers know of more than 1,600 volcanoes on the surface of Venus - Days are longer than years on Venus - Pressure is 90x the pressure at sea level on Earth

I repeat, NOT a perfect sphere, but a squashed sphere -the earth was once believed to be the center of the universe -Earth is the only planet not named after a God -The earth Is the densest planet in the solar system -At the equator, you would weigh less than if standing at one of the poles.

10 Mars Mars is a rocky terrestrial planet Composed of rock and metals, the reddish tint comes from iron (III) oxide. Mars has 2 moons Mars has about 11% of Earth s mass One mars year is 687 earth days I, Otto Mao would be about 8.4 years old as a Martian.

11 Mars Mars is named after the Roman god of War. There are signs that there was once water on Mars and where water is, life also has the possibility to be, so life on Mars may have existed at some point. One day, Mars will get a ring like Saturn. Pieces of Mars have fallen to Earth

12 Asteroid Belt Sometimes referred to as Minor Planets Located in the large gap between the orbit of Mars and the orbit of Jupiter, this region is known as the Asteroid belt More than 10,000 have been discovered A few asteroids have elliptical paths that bring them inside Mars orbit or even inside Earth s orbit. Some are rocky, others rich in iron or carbon Scientist hypothesis extinction of Dinosaurs may have been due to large impact of an Asteroid.

23 Comets dirty snowballs : - a compact chunk of frozen gases and dust - only a few kilometres in diameter - Long period comets in Oort cloud take over 200 years to orbit - Fly into the inner solar system - When a comet is a large distance from the Sun, it remains totally frozen and is not observable. When it gets near the Sun, it heats up. Some of its gas is vaporized by the heat and some of its dust is released. - It develops a big gas and dust cloud called a coma. It also develops two tails, a gas tail which points directly away from the Sun and a dust trail, which points away from the Sun but is swept backward along the comet s orbit.
