4 RECAP What to Know Before Buying a Computerized Telescope Computerized, Go To telescopes are a godsend for a budding amateur astronomer, facilitating one's first glimpses of the heavens. But John Endreson notes these are much more than "plug and play" instruments. Manuals for telescopes can be misleading, leaving novices confused as to why their telescope isn't aiming at their selected object. Key to aligning a computerized telescope is ensuring the telescope's base is perfectly level. Ensure the viewfinder is correctly aligned with the telescope since this will facilitate targeting bright stars so the telescope's computer can accurately view the heavens. Image credit: Chris Savia While computerized telescopes are jam packed with features, there are many accessories available for stargazing. GPS units are available to help find one's location and know where objects are in the sky. For astrophotographers, CCD cameras help you share the stars. John reminded our members the importance of knowing the night sky, even if you are buying a computerized telescope and, "It s never as easy as a simple flip of a switch and what would be the fun in that anyway?" SUBMISSIONS WELCOME Members are invited to submit articles, news, or stories for inclusion in Astral Projections. Please contact Chris Savia at newsletter@astra nj.org. Page 4

5 SPACE PLACE NOAA's Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) to revolutionize Earth watching by Ethan Siegel, NASA If you want to collect data with a variety of instruments over an entire planet as quickly as possible, there are two trade offs you have to consider: how far away you are from the world in question, and what orientation and direction you choose to orbit it. For a single satellite, the best of all worlds comes from a low Earth polar orbit, which does all of the following: orbits the Earth very quickly: once every 101 minutes, is close enough at 824 km high to take incredibly high resolution imagery, has five separate instruments each probing various weather and climate phenomena, and is capable of obtaining full planet coverage every 12 hours. 3. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument, which takes visible and infrared pictures at a resolution of just 400 meters (1312 feet), enables us to track not just weather patterns but fires, sea temperatures, nighttime light pollution as well as ocean color observations. 4. The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS), which measures how the ozone concentration varies with altitude and in time over every location on Earth's surface. This instrument is a vital tool for understanding how effectively ultraviolet light penetrates the atmosphere. 5. Finally, the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant System (CERES) will help understand the effect The type of data this new satellite the Joint of clouds on Earth's energy balance, presently Polar Satellite System 1 (JPSS 1) will take will one of the largest sources of uncertainty in be essential to extreme weather prediction and in climate modeling. early warning systems, which could have severely mitigated the impact of natural disasters like The JPSS 1 satellite is a sophisticated weather Hurricane Katrina. Each of the five instruments on monitoring tool, and paves the way for its sister board are fundamentally different and satellites JPSS 2, 3 and 4. It promises to not only complementary to one another. They are: provide early and detailed warnings for disasters like hurricanes, volcanoes and storms, but for 1. The Cross track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), longer term effects like droughts and climate which will measure the 3D structure of the changes. Emergency responders, airline pilots, atmosphere, water vapor and temperature in over cargo ships, farmers and coastal residents all rely 1,000 infrared spectral channels. This instrument on NOAA and the National Weather Service for is vital for weather forecasting up to seven days in informative short and long term data. The JPSS advance of major weather events. constellation of satellites will extend and enhance our monitoring capabilities far into the future. 2. The Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), which assists CrIS by adding 22 microwave channels to improve temperature and moisture readings down to 1 Kelvin accuracy for tropospheric layers. 6 CLUB BENEFITS WHY JOIN? For $25.00 a year, you can enjoy many benefits with the Astronomical Society of the Toms River Area. Members can take advantage of A.S.T.R.A.'s lending library, borrow telescopes for observations, access to private star parties, in addition to comraderie with local amateur astronomers. Contact one of our club officers today to join the fun. ASTRA'S TELESCOPES ASTRA has several different types of telescopes, telescope mounts, along with binoculars, eyepieces, and eyepiece filters available for members to borrow. If any member is interested, please check out ASTRA's website and contact John Endreson at telescope loan@astra nj.org, or ASTRA'S LIBRARY Many books and DVDs are available for loan to ASTRA members from our library for a one month period. A list of these items is available on the ASTRA website. Requests for these items must be made prior to our regular meeting, and returned by the following meeting. Please e mail our librarian John Endreson at Library Loan@astra nj.org, or call him at with your request for materials. VOLUNTEER PRESENTERS Members are invited to give presentations related to astronomy or space science at our monthly meetings. Please contact a club officer to make arrangements. OBSERVING CALENDAR June 3 Saturn at opposition. Our ringed neighbor will be at its closest, and brightest, for the year. June 5 New moon at 10:59 p.m. EDT June 5 Mercury at its greatest western elongation. Spot the most elusive planet when it's high above the horizon on Sunday morning! June 20 Full moon at 7:02 a.m. EDT on Monday morning. Known as the Full Strawberry and Full Rose moon. June 20 Summer solstice at 6:34 p.m. EDT on Monday evening. This is the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere with our sun at its furthest north for the year. ASTRA's bylaws strictly prohibit blood sacrifices. Page 6
