5 GTAC: Vision & Mission Statement To form a team of theorists and experimentalists that will strategically focus on the temporal analysis of light curves from GRBs. To build a new methodological paradigm in the determination of temporal observables and explore their theoretical implications. To determine courses of action to help guide new: 1. theoretical investigations, 2. development of analysis techniques, and 3. plans for future satellite missions.

6 GTA Workshop: Major Themes Major GRB temporal analysis topics will include: 1. intrinsic variability timescale (via wavelets, FFT, etc.) 2. spectral lag (via pulse-fit paradigm, CCF, etc.) These observables in principle can be directly extracted from GRB data and may shed light upon currently untenable aspects such as: 1. the progenitor(s), 2. central engine, 3. Bulk Lorentz Factor ( Bulk ) 4. short/long class discrimination. 5. Empirical redshift estimates

7 GTA Workshop: Key Goals Various methodologies will be compared/contrasted to: 1. define the state of the art, 2. facilitate the identification of fundamental open questions associated with the temporal characteristics of GRBs, and assign key task to 3. draft a collaborative white paper outlining a unified paradigm for the determination of variability and lags, with possible implications for the minimum Bulk Lorentz factor, short/long class discrimination and progenitor/central engine models.

8 After four decades of observations, several open questions still remain...

9 Open Questions #1: Variability Timescale What is the best way to define t v? Is there an inconsistency between t v of BATSE GRBs and those from Swift/Fermi? Does t v evolve with time? Are there variability classes amongst GRBs? Since flares are a form of late time variability, what are their temporal properties? Are they time dependent? Does their total energy correlate with other observables from prompt emission such as duration, E iso, etc.? What aspects of GRB phenomenology can be tied to the central engine? Is t v correlated with the intrinsic microphysics? Can t v be used to discriminate between progenitor models?

10 Open Questions #2: Bulk Lorentz Factor In conjunction with the observed high-energy -ray emission from Fermi, t v effects the calculation of Bulk. What are the implications of Bulk~1000 for leptonic/hadronic models? Does Bulk evolve with time throughout emission? How does time-averaged Bulk correlate with E iso, E tot, X-ray plateau duration, or total energy in flares?

11 Open Questions #3: Spectral Lags What is the physical source of the spectral lag? Is there something we can learn about the central engine or is the lag a mechanism of the emission of radiation? Which is the best method to measure the spectral lag? Does spectral lag change throughout prompt emission? What is the physical explanation behind the lag-luminosity relation (LLR)? What are the implications of the presence of a LLR both in x- ray flares and in the prompt -ray pulses? Is there an intrinsic difference between the spectral lags of long and short GRBs or is it a selection effect?

12 GTA Workshop: Scientific Program This will be a "think tank" environment, with ~20+10 minute talks on Day 1 that will set the stage for open discussion, strategy & break-out sessions on Days 2-3. The agenda will be flexible and allow for extended Q&A sessions in the context of presentations. Time won t be kept in the traditional sense, but we don t want to give out any Fidel Castro Awards either! Therefore, the scientific agenda should be considered a guide rather than a strict schedule.
