3 Introduction Welcome to. This collection of practice pages, hands-on activities, and easy-to-play learning games has been designed to help students, especially struggling learners, develop an understanding of the concept of time. Learning how to tell time can be a difficult skill for children to acquire. With this challenge in mind, the materials in this reproducible book are geared to help primary-aged students experience success in learning how to read analog clocks. To introduce and reinforce basic concepts of time, use the practice pages and games in a variety of ways, including whole-group lessons, as independent student work, in a learning center, and as at-home enrichment activities. The lessons in address the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Standards by strengthening measurement, problem-solving, and communication skills. The interactive games and delightful practice pages will surely capture the interest of students while strengthening an essential math skill telling time. How to Use the Book The activities in this book have been planned to address the needs of students just beginning to learn how to tell time as well as those students who need opportunities for reviewing this essential skill. To get started, you may have your students complete Pretest/Posttest A or B. Then, select the appropriate activities for your students by turning to the corresponding section of the book reading time on the hour, on the half hour, or on the quarter hour and five-minute intervals. Patterns for paper clocks are provided for hands-on practice in telling time. On pages and 9, you will find two large clock faces along with charming illustrations to help children remember important features about the hour and minute hands. Snail s Hour Clock can be used when introducing and discussing how slowly the hour hand moves around the clock face. Monkey s Minute Clock features the minute hand and minute tick marks. To make sturdy demonstration clocks, copy the patterns (enlarge them for large group discussions) onto card stock, cut out the hands, and then attach them to the clock faces with brass fasteners. If you prefer to make paper-plate clocks, duplicate copies of the pages onto colorful paper, cut out the clock faces along the heavy black lines, discard the illustrations that surround them, and then mount the clock faces on stiff paper plates. Use poster board or card stock for the clock hands to make them more durable. For additional suggestions on using these clock manipulatives, turn to the directions for activities and games on pages, 9, and 5. In addition to class use, consider selecting some of the practice pages and games for at-home activities. Perhaps there are specific times that a student is struggling to learn. Have the child take home an assembled paper-plate clock and some telling-time cards that you have made with the patterns provided. Show digital clock faces on the fronts of the cards and analog clock faces on the backs. These materials can easily be included with a copy of the Letter to Parent on page 7. Learning about telling time concepts can be fun, and more easily mastered, with activities and games! KE-005 Key Education

4 Telling Time on the Hour Directions for Hands-On Activities and Games Using Clocks as Manipulatives For children who are just beginning to learn how to tell time, it is important to have experiences observing how the hour hand moves on the clock dial. Gather real analog clocks or classroom demonstration clocks for children to explore in the math center. If possible, provide a variety of battery-operated analog alarm clocks. Discuss the time shown, mainly focusing on the location of the hour hand. Help students learn to recognize when the hour hand points either directly to a number, a little bit past a number, or almost to the next number. For each example of time, ask children to tell you the hour. Remind them to say o clock only when the minute hand points to the. To demonstrate the passage of time, consider using the Turtle Hours reproducible on page 13 as a model. First, photocopy the Turtle Hours sheet onto card stock. Cut out the number strips along the dashed lines and glue them together as indicated to make one long strip. Then, cut out the turtle and along the dashed lines to create a window for viewing the hour. Starting from the back of the turtle, slip the number strip through one slit to the front and then through the other slit to the back. Slide the strip to view the number that corresponds to the time shown on an actual clock. Talk about how the hour hand moves slowly (just like a turtle moves!) around the clock dial. Alternatively, make four additional copies of the number strips to demonstrate the passage of time during a school week. Start the activity on Monday by showing the assembled Turtle Hours model during your Morning Meeting Time. Continue the activity each day by attaching a new -hour number strip to the previous strip to build the chain of hours. Change the name of the day on the turtle s shell. Slide the turtle down the strip at various times during that day to reinforce how time is passing. On Friday, have children look at the length of the entire paper chain. Using Games for Learning Time Match Up Getting Ready: Duplicate copies of the analog clocks on pages 11 and. Cut out the clocks along the dashed lines and mount them onto small index cards. Using watercolor markers, write the corresponding digital time on the back of each card. Decorate the clock cards as desired. Make copies of the Snail s Hour Clock on page on colorful card stock. Cut out each snail clock along the dashed line and each clock hand along the solid black line. Make a demonstration clock for each hour by gluing on the hands accordingly. Playing the Game: Have children read the digital times on the game cards and match them with the corresponding snail clocks. Hickory Dickory Clock Getting Ready: Copy the game board on pages 1 and 15 onto colored paper and then cut along the dashed line. Glue the panels to the inside of a file folder, overlapping the sections to complete the scene. To make the game cards: Copy the clock faces and words on pages 11,, and 1 onto colorful paper. Cut out those materials along the dashed lines. Glue the words onto small index cards. Then, mount the clock faces on the backs of the corresponding cards to make the game self-correcting. Finally, make clock hands out of card stock. Punch a hole at the end of each clock hand and attach those hands to the clock on the game board with a brass fastener. Playing the Game: Provide two players with the game board, game cards, and your choice of game markers. Place the cards faceup in a stack. Have each player choose a path on the game board and then take turns drawing a card. If a time card is drawn, the player must show that time correctly on the game board before moving the game marker ahead one space. If a direction card is drawn, the player moves his game marker as indicated. The first player to reach the top of the clock is the winner. KE-005 Key Education

11 Directions for Crazy Clock Bingo Getting Ready: Copy the bingo boards on pages onto colorful card stock. Cut apart the bingo boards along the dashed lines. Laminate the materials for durability. Use the game cards prepared for Time Match Up on page as the time cards for the caller to use. Alternatively, if you prefer that more than five children play the game at the same time, prepare additional sets of bingo boards. Then, divide the class into small groups of five children and distribute the sets of bingo boards accordingly. This way there will be a winner for each group of students at the end of each round of bingo. Playing the Game: Provide copies of the bingo boards, your own bingo chips for marking the spaces on the boards, and a set of time cards. Each student selects a bingo board. Shuffle the time cards and then place them faceup in a stack. The caller reads the digital time on each card, allowing players enough time to locate the corresponding clock faces on their game boards and cover each with a bingo chip. The first player to cover all of the clock faces on a board correctly is the winner. Crazy Clock Bingo Board # 1 Free Space KE-005 Key Education 17

23 Web Sites Willy the Watchdog has a special game for children who are practicing how to tell time on the hour and half hour. To play this fun partner game, children take turns rolling the die and then click on a gear to set the time on the clock. At this Web site, children read the time on the analog clock and then find the corresponding digital clock. The clock faces show times on the hour and half hour. There are questions. For the interactive activity Clockwise, set the time by clicking on the clock face to move the hour or minute hand. Choose the skill level to practice telling time on the hour, half hour, or five-minute increments. Some second graders may enjoy playing this memory-matching game called Matching Time. Choose Level for cards that feature digital times with 5-minute intervals. To play the game Bang on Time, watch the minute hand move around the clock face and then stop when it reaches the specified time in five-minute increments. Players are allowed turns to earn points.
