1 Curriculum Vitae Rodolphe CONAN University of Victoria Department of Mechanical Engineering Engineering Lab Wing B160 PO Box 3055 STN CSC Victoria, BC V8W3P6 Canada Telephone numbers : private: +1 (250) office : +1 (250) e mail : rconan@uvic.ca Web Site Adaptive Optics Systems Scientist Experiences Since March 2005 I am an Adaptive Optics Systems Scientist working for the Adaptive Optics Laboratory of the University of Victoria (Canada). I am managing the Adaptive Optics simulations and experiments in the laboratory. I am the Principal Investigator and designer of the Woofer Tweeter and of the Laser Guide Star wavefront sensor experiments for the Thirty Meter Telescope project and of our patented AO optical tweezers test bench. I am also part of the team which did one of the two Conceptual Design Studies for the Real-Time Computer of NFIRAOS, the TMT Adaptive Optics facility. From November 2002 to February 2005 I was a researcher at the CNRS working for the Laboratory of Astrophysics of Grenoble Observatory in France and for the Optics Department of ONERA in Paris. I was with the project VLT Planet Finder, a second generation instrument for the VLT. The goal of the instrument is the seeking of extra solar planets. I was working for the Adaptive Optics group in charge of the design of the adaptive optics system of the instrument. My work consisted in the studies of different wavefront sensor, the modeling of atmospheric turbulence effects on the system and the comparison of several closed loop algorithm from a simple integrator to a Kalman filter. From January 2001 to October 2002 I got a post-doctoral position at the headquarters of the European Southern Observatory in Germany. My post-doctoral position was funded by the European Community in the framework of the Research and Training Network on Adaptive Optics for Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs). I was a system scientist in the Adaptive Optics group of the Instrument Division of ESO. I was working on the modeling of Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) systems and collaborated to the development of an MCAO demonstrator. I have studied also the impact of the finite value of the outer scale of turbulence on the performance of AO systems for ELTs and I have developed a C++ parallel library for fast and simple evaluation of ELT AO budget error. From October 1997 to October 2000 PhD at the Department of Astrophysics of the University of Nice-Sophia-Antipolis (FRANCE) on: Modeling of the effects of the spatial coherence outer scale of the wave front for High Angular Resolution (HAR) in Astronomy. Applications to Adaptive Optics, Interferometry and Extremely Large Telescopes. I was involved in theoretical developments and on site measurements for a better understanding of the effects of the outer scale on HAR techniques like adaptive optics and interferometry. My doctorate has been delivered the 31 of October 2000 with highly recommended distinction.
2 From February to July 1997 Internship with BERTIN company in Aix-en-Provence (FRANCE). I was part of the project TRACE (TRajectographie et Aide à la Conduite d Essais). I was working on the development and the design of an automatic cine-theodolite to follow and to estimate the trajectory of an air-borne target. My main work consisted in defining the error on the position of the target due to refraction and atmospheric turbulence. From August 1996 to May 1997 Military service at the Ecole National du Service de Santé de l Armée de Terre in DINAN (France) as a teacher. I carried out courses in mathematics, mechanics and electrical engineering to officers who prepared examinations. I also obtained my level of first-aid worker and my heavy-goods vehicle license. From February to June 1996 Training course at the laboratory of Astrophysics of Grenoble Observatory (LAOG) under the direction of Almas Chalabaev. My work was to model the spectro-imager GraF (Grating and Fabry-Perot Interferometer). From a model of an astrophysical source, I had to calculate the cube of data obtained by the instrument taking into account the various source of noise. Education Studies Master s degree in physics at the University of Bretagne Occidentale (France) (1994). (First in one s year) D.E.A. Astrophysics and diluted Mediums at the University of Lyon (1995). D.E.A. Imagery and High Angular Resolution at the University of Nice (1997). PhD. Modeling of the effects of the spatial coherence outer scale of the wave front for High Angular Resolution in Astronomy. Applications to Adaptive Optics, Interferometry and Extremely Large Telescopes at the University of Nice (2000). (highly recommended distinction) School August The Michelson Interferometry Summer School at the California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena. The Summer School consisted of a series of tutorial lectures describing the theory and techniques of optical/infrared long baseline stellar interferometry, from its fundamental principles through to its astrophysical applications, methods of data analysis, and interpretation. Languages French: mother tongue. English: fluent. Spanish: intermediate. Computer knowledge Scientific software : Matlab/Simulink (extensive experience), IDL (some experience). Optical design software : Zemax (intermediate level). Languages: HTML, C/C++ (MPI), Java. Operating systems: DOS, Windows, UNIX/Linux. Miscellaneous French citizenship, 38 years old, married, two children. Status in Canada: permanent resident Patent 1. C. Bradley and R. Conan.
