8 8 F Galland et al: Extraslar planets and brwn dwarfs arund A-F type stars Buchy et al (21) n the fundamental phtn nise limit t radial velcity measurements, in the case f early F type main sequence stars These fits apply nly in the range where lines are reslved, and if phtn nise uncertainties are large cmpared t the instrumental (in)stability (this crrespnds typically t v sin i 15 km s 1 with ELODIE) When the lines are nt reslved (small v sin i), we reach the instrumental limit, represented by a hrizntal line in Fig 9, in the case f ELODIE Nte that the dispersin arund the fits results frm stars with different spectral types The achieved uncertainties n the radial velcities appear t be a factr f 5±1 lwer with spectra btained with HARPS than with ELODIE, even fr early type stars which have n average a large v sin i A factr f 2 cmes frm the per pixel crrespnding t these radial velcity uncertainties (2 with ELODIE versus 4 with HARPS) Anther factr f 2 cmes frm an increased factr f 4 in the number f pixels per spectral element, ie a factr f 4 in the whle flux fr a given per pixel (ELODIE and HARPS have apprximatively the same spectral range) Fr the radial velcity uncertainty, these tw effects give a factr f 2 2=4, cnsistent with the factr 5±1 abve Nte that we reach ELODIE and HARPS instrumental precisin fr slwly rtating stars 6 Mass detectin limits In the framewrk f searches fr lw mass cmpanins, we nw estimate what kind f such cmpanins can be fund given these uncertainties The mass detectin limits are inferred fr different rbital perids, given radial velcity variatins f±3ǫ RV, assuming a circular rbit They are displayed in Fig 1 The mst imprtant utcmes are: With ELODIE, the planetary dmain can be reached fr A type main sequence stars with v sin i up t 1 km s 1 and rbital perids less than 1 days, r with v sin i up t 4 km s 1 and rbital perids less than 1 days Fr late A type stars, the accessible range is v sin i up t 8 km s 1 and rbital perids up t 1 days Planetary masses can be detected fr all F type main sequence stars With HARPS, the planetary dmain is accessible fr all A and F type stars, even with large v sin i Fr example, with ELODIE, the mass detectin limit f a 1 d perid planet arund an A5V star with v sin i equal t 6 km s 1 is 4 M Jup Such massive clse-in planets are nt unexpected if a prt-planetary massive disk scales with the parent star mass With HARPS, this detectin limit decreases t 7 M Jup 7 Cnclusins We presented in this paper the perfrmances f a radial velcity measurement methd that we develped in the case f A-F type stars Radial velcities and crrespnding uncertainties are shwn t be accurately cmputed bth by simulatins and using real cases (stars cnstant in radial velcity, the case f a binary detectin and the cnfirmatin f a knwn planet rbiting Tau B) With regard t stellar prperties, the achieved uncertainties ǫ RV depend n the spectral type, and abve all n v sin i, t the pwer 3/2: ifǫ RV is expressed in m s 1 and v sin i in km s 1, ǫ RV behaves typically (still with a dependance n the spectral type) as: ǫ RV = 2 v sin i 15 2 with ELODIE, if v sin i 15 km s 1 ; ǫ RV = 3 v sin i 15 4 with HARPS In particular, we have demnstrated that it shuld be pssible t detect extraslar planets and brwn dwarfs arund such A-F type stars: detectin limits arrive at the planetary dmain fr mst f them Given these results, we have begun a radial velcity survey t search fr these lw mass cmpanins arund a vlume-limited sample f A-F main sequence stars, with ELODIE and HARPS Acknwledgements We acknwledge supprt frm the French CNRS We are grateful t the Observatire de Haute Prvence, the Prgramme Natinal de Planétlgie (INSU), and ESO fr the time allcatin, and t their technical staff These results have made use f the SIMBAD database, perated at CDS, Strasburg, France References Abt, H, 2, ApJ 544, 933 Baranne, A, Quelz, D, Mayr, M, et al 1996, A&A 119, 373 Breger, M, Mntgmery, MH, 2, ASP Cnf Ser, Vl 21, Delta Scuti an Related stars Astrn Sc Pac, San Francisc Buchy, F, Pepe, F, Quelz, D, 21, A&A 374, 733 Butler, P, Marcy, G, Williams E, et al 1997, ApJ, 474L, 115B Chelli, A, 2, A&A 358, L59 Eyer, L, Grenn, M, 1997, HippCnf, 467E Handler, G, Balna, LA, Shbbrk, RR, et al 22, MNRAS 333, 262 ESA 1997, The Hipparcs and Tych Cat, ESA SP-12 Griffin, R E M, David, M, Verschueren, W, 2, A&A Suppl Ser, 147, 299 Lagrange, AM, Backman, DE and Artymwicz, P, 2, in Prtstars and Planets IV (Bk - Tucsn: University f Arizna Press;
