5 Telling Time to the Quarter-hour Now we have learned to tell time to the hour and half hour. We learned that when the big hand or minute hand points to the 12 it means o clock. And when the big hand or minute hand points to the 6 it means thirty. Now let s learn what it means to tell time to the quarter hour. What time does this clock say? Excellent! This clock says it is 12:15. The hour hand is its way to 1 and the minute hand is on the 3. What does the 3 mean in minutes? Well skip count by 5 starting at 1 and ending on the 3. Count with me, 5, 10, and 15. There are 15 minutes after the 12 so the time is 12:15. What time does this clock say? Excellent! This clock says it is 11:45. The hour hand is at on its way to 12 and the minute hand is on the 9. What does the 9 mean in minutes? Well skip count by 5 starting at 1 and ending on the 9. Count with me, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45. There are 45 minutes after the 11 so the time is 11:45. Page 5 of 18

6 We can say these times using fractions. First, let s review our fractions. This is one whole, then one-quarter, then one-half and then three-quarters. When the clock is on the hour, it represents a whole. Then when the clock says 12:15, 1:15, 2:15 and so on, the minute hand went one-quarter of the way around the clock. See how it matches the fraction one-fourth, which is also stated as one-quarter. Then when the clock says 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and so on, the minute hand went halfway around the clock. It matches the fraction one-half. Then the clock says 12:45, 1:45, 2:45 and so on, it means the minute hand went three-quarters of the way around the clock. See how it matches the fraction three-fourths, which is also stated as three-quarters. Then the clock says 1 o clock, 2 o clock, 3 o clock and so on, when the minute hand goes all the way around the clock one whole time, which means it is back to being a whole. Page 6 of 18

7 We can say these times using fractions. When it is 12:15, we can say it is a quarter past 12. When it is 12:30, we can say it is half past 12. And when it is 12:45, we can say it is a quarter to 1. This means we have 15 more minutes before it turns 1 o clock. Let s practice telling time to the quarter hour. What time does this analog clock say? Great job! It is 2:15. We can also say it is a quarter past 2. What time does this analog clock say? Page 7 of 18

8 Great job! It is 3:45. We can also say it is a quarter to 4. Notice that the hour hand is moving closer to the 4. It will move closer to the 4 as it becomes closer to the 4 o clock hour. What time does this analog clock say? Great job! It is 3:15. How else can we say 3:15? Excellent work! We can also say it is a quarter past 3. What time does this analog clock say? Great job! It is 9:45. How else can we say 9:45? Very good! We can also say it is a quarter to 10. Notice that the hour hand is moving closer to the 10. It will move closer to the 10 as it becomes closer to the 10 o clock hour. You did a great job telling time to the quarter-hour.
