(Sometimes α is called the false positive rate.) Type II Error: favor null hypothesis that is actually false. Type II Probability (β): The probability of committing a type II error. 8 8.4 The Nature of Hypothesis Testing We need to determine a measure that will quantify what we should believe. Test Statistic: A random variable whose value is calculated from the sample data and is used in making the decision reject H 0 : or fail to reject H 0.
