On the K-property of quantized Arnold cat maps arxiv:math/ v [math.oa] 0 Feb 2000 I S.V. Neshveyev Abstract We prove that some quantized Arnold cat maps are entropic K-systems. his result was formulated by H. Narnhofer [], but the fact that the optimal decomposition for the multi-channel entropy constructed there is not strictly local was not appropriately taken care of. We propose a strictly local decomposition based on a construction of Voiculescu. Introduction he concept of K-system is very important in ergodic theory. Narnhofer and hirring [2] introduced a non-commutative analogue of this notion. In [3] V.Ya. Golodets and the author proved the following sufficient condition for the K-property: a W -system (M,φ,α) is an entropic K- system if there exists a W -subalgebra M 0 of M such that M 0 α(m 0 ), n Z α n (M 0 ) = C, n N (α n (M 0 ) α n (M 0 )) is weakly dense in M. his condition and the observation that a subsystem of a K-system invariant under the modular group is a K-system too allow to construct a large class of quantum K-systems (see, in particular, [3, 4, 5]). We know only one class of quantum systems for which the K-property is obtained by different arguments. his is quantized Arnold cat maps. his result was formulated in Narnhofer s paper []. he decompositions contructed in the course of the proof there are not strictly local, that leads to a factor that again could only be controlled by using asymptotic abelian arguments. So the essential interest lies in the construction of a completely positive map that is strictly local and can be well controlled and generalized in a larger context. II he K-property of quantized cat maps Let G be a discrete abelian group, ω:g G a bicharacter. Consider the twisted group C -algebra C (G,ω) generated by unitaries u g, g G, such that u g u h = ω(g,h)u g+h. he canonical trace τ on C (G,ω) is given by τ(u g ) = 0 for g 0. It is known that the uniqueness of the trace is equivalent to the simplicity of C (G,ω), and is also equivalent to the non-degeneracy of the pairing (g, h) ω(g, h) ω(h, g). In particular, if G is countable and the pairing is non-degenerate, then π τ (C (G,ω)) is the hyperfinite II -factor. Each ω-preserving automorphism of G defines an automorphism α of C (G,ω), α (u g ) = u g. he non-commutative torus A θ (θ [0,)) is the algebra C (Z 2,ω θ ), where ω θ (g,h) = e iπθσ(g,h), σ(g,h) = g h 2 g 2 h.
he following theorem was formulated in []. heorem. Let SL 2 (Z), Spec = {λ,λ. Suppose λ > (so that λ is real) and θ [0,) (2Zλ 2 + 2Z). hen (π τ (A θ ),τ,α ) is an entropic K-system. We will prove the following more general result. heorem 2. Let be an aperiodic ω-preserving automorphism of G. Suppose that ω(g, n h) < g,h G. n Z hen (π τ (C (G,ω)),τ,α ) is an entropic K-system. It was proved in [, heorem 3.8] that under the assumptions of heorem, for any g,h Z 2, we have ω(g, n h) C λ n, so heorem is really follows from heorem 2. he key observation for that estimate was the equality n h = 2 λ 2 (λ n+i + λ n i ) h i + λ n h (n N), i=0 where h i Z 2 and h R 2 depend only on h and, which is obtained by computations in a basis diagonalizing. Since σ(g, h i ), σ(g,h), λ n+i + λ n i = r n+i are all integers and θ 2s(λ 2 )mod 2Z for some s Z, we have θσ(g, n h) λ n 2s(λ 2 )σ(g, h)mod 2Z, whence ω(g, n h) λ n 2π s (λ 2 ) σ(g, h). Starting the proof of heorem 2, consider a unital completely positive mapping γ: A π τ (C (G,ω) of a finite-dimensional C -algebra A. By definition [2], we have to prove that lim lim n k k H τ(γ,α n γ,...,α n(k ) γ) = H τ (γ). For a finite set X, we denote by Mat(X) the C -algebra of linear operators on l 2 (X). Let {e xy x,y X be the canonical system of matrix units in Mat(X). For X G, we define a unital completely positive mapping i X :Mat(X) C (G,ω) by i X (e xy ) = u xu y ω(x y,y) = u x y. As follows from [6] (see Lemmas 5. and 6. there), there exist a net {X i i of finite subsets in G and, for each i, a unital completely positive mapping j Xi :C (G,ω) Mat(X i ) such that (i Xi j Xi )(a) a i 0 a C (G,ω). From this we may conclude that any partition of unit in π τ (C (G,ω)) can be approximated in strong operator topology by a partition of the form {i X (a k ) k, where {a k k is a partition of unit in Mat(X). Hence, for any ε > 0, there exist a finite subset X G and a finite partition of unit = i I a i in Mat(X) such that, for b i = i X (a i ), we have H τ (γ) < ε + i ητ(b i ) + i S(τ(γ( )),τ(γ( )b i )), 2
where ηx = xlog x. Set X nk = k n(l ) (X). he following lemma was proved in [] for G = Z 2. Lemma. Let G be a discrete abelian group, an aperiodic endomorphism of G, Ker = 0, Y a finite subset of G, 0 Y. hen there exists n 0 N such that if for some y,...,y k Y, n n 0, k N, then y =... = y k = 0. k n(l ) y l = 0 () Proof. First consider the case where G is finitely generated. hen the periodic part of G is finite. Since acts on it aperiodically, it is trivial, so G = Z n for some n N. hen is defined by a non-degenerate matrix with integral entries, which we denote by the same letter. It is known that the aperiodicity is equivalent to Spec =. Let Spec = {λ,...,λ m, V i C n be the root space corresponding to λ i, and P i the projection onto V i along j i V j. hen () is equivalent to the system of equalities k n(l ) P i y l = 0, (2) i =,...,m. Fix i. Suppose, for definiteness, that λ i <, and choose δ, 0 < δ < λ i. Since Vi is a sum of Jordan cells, there exists a constant C such that n Vi C( λ i + δ) n n N. here exists also a constant M > 0 such that, for y Y, we have either P i y = 0 or M P i y M. Finally, choose n i N such that n=n i MC( λ i + δ) n < M. hen if the equality (2) holds with n n i, then P i y = 0. Since Ker = 0, we can rewrite (2) as k n(l ) P i y l+ = 0. hus we sequentially obtain P i y =... = P i y k = 0. So we may take n 0 = max i n i. We prove the general case by induction on Y using the same method as in [7] to reduce the proof to the case considered above. Let H 0 be the group generated by Y,Y, 2 Y,.... Set H n = n H 0, H = n H n, Y = Y H. Suppose Y Y. here exists n N such that Y = Y H n. If the equality () holds with n n, then y H n Y = Y H. hen k l=2 n(l ) y l H. Since Ker = 0 and H = H, we conclude that k n(l ) y l+ H. hus we sequentially obtain that y,...,y k Y. Since Y < Y, we may apply the inductive assumption. If Y = Y, then Y H, hence there exists n N such that if H is the group generated by Y,Y,..., n Y, then Y H. hen H is a finitely generated group, an aperiodic endomorphism of H. For this case Lemma is already proved. Applying Lemma to the set Y = X X we see that the mapping X k X nk, (x,...,x k ) k n(l ) x l, 3
is a bijection for all k N and for all n N sufficiently large. his bijection induces an isomorphism of Mat(X k ) onto Mat(X nk ). Composing it with i Xnk :Mat(X nk ) C (G,ω) and identifying Mat(X k ) with Mat(X) k we obtain a unital completely positive mapping σ nk :Mat(X) k C (G,ω). Set b(n,k) i...i k = σ nk (a i... a ik ). By definition [8], we obtain k H τ(γ,α n γ,...,αn(k ) γ) ητ(b(n,k) i...i k k ) + k i,...,i k where b(n,k) (l) = k ( ( ) ( S τ γ( ),τ γ( )α n(l ) )) (b(n,k) (l) ), b(n,k) i...i k. i,...,î l,...,i k If we denote by τ Y the unique tracial state on Mat(Y ), then τ Y = τ i Y, so that τ σ nk = τ k X, whence τ(b(n,k)i...ik ) = τ X (a il ) = τ(b il ). So the first term in the inequality above is equal to i ητ(b i), and in order to prove heorem it remains to show that α n(l ) (b(n,k) (l) ) b il 0 n uniformly on k,l N (l k) and I. Let θ l be the embedding of Mat(X) into Mat(X) k defined by θ l (a) =... {{ a... {{. l k l hen b(n,k) (l) = (σ nk θ l )(a il ). hus we just have to estimate α n(l ) σ nk θ l i X. Using the facts that ω is bilinear and -invariant we obtain σ nk (e x x... e xl x l e xy e xl+ x l+... e xk x k ) = k = k ω n(l ) (x y), n(l ) y + n(i ) x i u n(l ) (x y) i=,i l = ω(x y, n(i l) x i ) ω(x y,y) u n(l ) (x y), i=,i l so that (α n(l ) σ nk θ l i X )(e xy ) = = = x,...,ˆx l,...,x k i=,i l ( ω(x y, n(i l) x i ) ) ω(x y, n(i l) z). i=,i l z X 4
We must show that the latter expression tends to zero as n uniformly on k,l N (l k). his follows from ω(x y, n z) <. n Z So the proof of heorem 2 is complete. z X III Classical case If ω, then C (G,ω) = C(Ĝ), the algebra of continuous functions on the dual group Ĝ. It is known that an automorphism of G is aperiodic iff the dual automorphism of Ĝ is ergodic. hus we obtain a classical Rohlin s result [7] stating that ergodic automorphisms of compact abelian groups have completely positive entropy. Note that in this case we have b(n,k) i...i k = b i α n (b i 2 )... α n(k ) (b ik ), so what is really necessary for the proof is Lemma above and the possibility of approximating in mean measurable partitions of unit by partitions consisting from trigonometric polynomials, which can be proved by elementary methods without appealing to Voiculescu s completely positive mappings.
