The approach used herein is the minimization of the sample variance of the output of constrained notch filters fed by the noisy sinusoid. In particular this paper focuses on closed-form expressions of the frequency estimate which can be obtained using notch filters having an all-zeros FIR structure. In this paper it is shown that the FIR notch filters obtained from standard nd -order IIR filters are inadequate and an alternate nd -order IIR notch filter is proposed which provides an unbiased estimate of the frequency. The FIR filter obtained from the new IIR filter provides a closed-form unbiased frequency estimate. Copyright IFAC Keywords. Frequency estimation; harmonic analysis; notch filters; unbiased parameter identification.. ITRODUCTIO This paper deals with the estimation of the frequency of a harmonic signal st () = Acos( t+ ϕ) given its noisy measurement yt () = st () + nt () t =... where nt () is a zero-mean white Gaussian noise ( n WG( σ ) ). This problem is frequently encountered in real-world applications especially in the fields of adaptive control and signal processing and numerous techniques have been developed for its treatment (see e.g. Bittanti and Picci 996 Bittanti and Savaresi Hsu et al. 999 Kay 988 La Scala and Bitmead 996 Quinn and Fernandes 99 Renders et al. 984 Savaresi et al. Schoukens et al. 99 Stoica 99). This paper focuses on the class of estimation methods based on constrained notch filters (see e.g. Händel and ehorai 994 and references cited therein). The basic idea underlying notch-filters-based estimation techniques is the minimization with respect to of the loss function ε t () t= J( ) = ( ) where ε ( t ) = G( z ) y() t is the output of a notch filter with transfer function Gz ( ) fed by the measured signal yt (). The notch of Gz ( ) is centered around the frequency. In general the dependence of J ( ) on is nonlinear and non-convex; hence iterative quasi-ewton minimization methods must be used. If the unknown frequency is time-varying and the minimization of () is made recursively the estimation algorithm usually is called frequency tracker (see e.g. Boashash 99). Obviously the most crucial design choice in a notchbased estimation technique is the selection of the structure and of the parameterization of the filter
Gz ( ). Usually nd -order IIR filter with a strongly constrained parameterization are used. Starting from nd -order filters simple FIR filters or more sophisticated higher-order IIR filters have been developed and proposed (Händel et al. 998 Savaresi 997). Two slightly different nd -order IIR notch filters are typically used in practice. They have the following expressions: cos( ) z + z G ( z ρ) = () ρcos( ) z + ρ z G cos( ) z + z =. () ( + ρ )cos( ) z + ρ z ( z In () and () the parameter ρ ( ρ < ) is known as the de-biasing parameter or the poles-contraction factor (note that ρ only affects the position of the poles). The difference of the poles position (when ρ varies) of () and () can be easily appreciated from Fig.. Re Re Im Im Fig.. Example of pole placement of filters () (left) and () (right). The white bullets indicate the position of the zeros. In the literature filters of this type are also known as constrained notch filter where the term constrained refers to the fact that their structure is strongly underparameterized: the 5 parameters of a fullyparameterized nd -order digital IIR filter are reduced to one parameter only. As a matter of fact since ρ is regarded as a design parameter the only unknown parameter of () and () is the angular frequency. The main difference between () and () is that () provides a rigorously unbiased estimation of the frequency of a pure tone embedded in white noise whereas () provides a biased estimate. It is easy to see that such bias is negligible if ρ ; the problem of the bias becomes severe if ρ <<. The properties of such filters have been discussed and analyzed in a large number of works (see e.g. Bittanti et al. 997 and references cited therein). The goal of this paper is to develop closed-form frequency estimators based on notch filters. The starting point of this work can be summarized in the following observations: - closed-form expressions of the frequency estimator cannot be obtained if the notch filter has a IIR structure due to the auto-regressive part of the filter; - a constrained FIR notch filter can be obtained from G ( z by setting ρ = ; this is not possible using G ( z (note that G( z ) is not a FIR); - the closed-form frequency estimate obtained from G( z ) is severely affected by a bias error. Starting from these observations the main results and original contributions of this paper are the following: a new nd -order IIR unbiasing constrained notch filter G ( z is developed and analyzed (section ); it is shown in Section that a closed-form frequency estimate can be obtained using the FIR filters G ( ) z and G ( ) z (the major advantage of G( z ) over G( z ) is that it provides a rigorously unbiased estimate of ); it is shown that the closed-form frequency estimate provided by the FIR notch filter G ( ) z if the number of data snapshots is large tends to the frequency estimators provided by the Pisarenko Harmonic Decomposition approach and by the Youle-Walker approach (Section 4).. A EW UBIASIG OTCH FILTER As already remarked in the Introduction one of the major drawbacks of the notch filter () (the most widely used in practice) is that it provides a biased estimation of. This bias is particularly severe when ρ <<. Starting from the cost function () a new unbiasing nd -order IIR notch filter can be obtained as follows. Consider the long-run (asymptotic) version of the cost function () namely: J( ) = lim ε ( t ) t = where ε( t ) = G( z ) y() t. It is easy to see that J ( ) can be given the following
expression (see Bittanti et al. 997): + π jω J ( ) = Ge ( ) Sy ( ω) dω π (4) π where S y ( ω ) is the power spectrum of y(t) which can be split into the power spectra of s() t and nt () namely: Sy( ω) = Ss( ω) + Sn( ω) ; S ( ) n ω = σ and A Ss ( ω) = δ( ω ) δ( ω ) + +. Compute the asymptotic cost function J( ) associated with the notch filter G( z ρ) by plugging in (4) the expression of the notch filter () and the expressions of Ss ( ω ) and Sn ( ω ): J ( ) = J ( ) + J ( ); + π jω ( ) = ( ) π π A j ( ) = ( ) J G e ρ σ dω J G e ω ρ. π For the computation of J ( ) (the contribution to J( ) due to the noise) we have resorted to the Rugizka algorithm (see Åström 97). The calculus of J ( ) calls for cumbersome but easier computations. The expressions obtained for J ( ) and J ( ) are: A (cos( ) cos( )) J ( ) = DE 4 DE = + ρ + 4ρ cos ( ) + (5a) + 4ρ cos ( ) 4ρ cos( )cos( ) + 4ρcos( )cos( ) ρ σ ρ + ρ 6ρcos ( ) + ρ+ cos ( ) + J ( ) =. π ( + ρ)( ρ + ρcos( ) + )( ρ ρcos( ) + ) (5b) The bias in the frequency estimate obtained using G( z ρ) is due to the fact that J ( ) is a function of. This dependence of J ( ) on has the effect of moving the minimum of J ( ) away from (whereas is the minimum of J ( )). ow observe that the minimum of J ( ) does not change if J ( ) is multiplied by a strictly positive function of and ρ say η( ρ) (obviously for [ π ) and ρ [) ). This is due by the presence of the factor (cos( ) cos( )) in J ( ) which is null if =. Consider then the following function η( ρ) : η( ρ) = ( + ρ)( ρ + ρcos( ) + )( ρ ρcos( ) + ) ( + ρ )( ρ + ρ 6ρcos ( ) + ρ+ + cos ( )) (6) ote that such function is the square-root of the inverse of J ( ) (but for the coefficient σ / π ) multiplied by ( + ρ ) ). A new unbiasing filter G ( z can be obtained from G ( z and (6) as follows: G( z ρ) = η( ρ) G( z ρ) = cos( ) z + z. (7) = η( ρ) cos( ) ρ z + ρ z Due to the fact that by multiplying G z G z ρ is simply obtained ( ) ρ by η( ρ) some ( ) remarks on the shape of η( ρ) are due (see Fig. where η( ρ) is plotted in the ranges [ π ] and ρ [] ). - η( ρ) is not-null in the ranges [ π ] and ρ [] ; this can be easily seen from (6). This guarantees the well-posedness of the optimization problem based on the cost function (). - ote that η( ) = whereas η( ) strongly differs from ; this is expected since η( ρ) is a sort of de-biasing factor of G z (. Therefore η( ρ) leaves G ( z almost unchanged if ρ is close to whereas η( ρ) provides a strong correction to G z small values of ρ. ( for - ote that η( π / ρ ) = ρ [] and that η( ρ) is symmetric with respect to = π / in the range [ π ] (Bittanti et al. 997) ρ Fig.. Shape of the function η( ρ) in the ranges [ π ] and ρ []. In order to get a complete understanding of the differences between the three nd -order constrained notch filters G ( z G ( z and G ( z it is interesting to compare the corresponding asymptotic cost functions J ( ) J ( ) and J ( ) respectively.
The closed-form expressions of J ( ) has already been computed in (5). Following the same procedure () s () n () s () n J( = ) J ( + ) J ( ) and J( = ) J ( + ) J ( ) can be obtained as: () s A (cos( ) cos( )) J ( = ) DE 4 4 DE = + ρ cos ( ) ρ cos( )cos( ) ρ + (8a) 4 + ρ + cos ( + ) ρ cos ( ) 4ρ cos( )cos( ) + cos( )cos( ) + 4ρ cos ( ) σ J ( ) = (8b) ( + ρ ) π () s A (cos( ) cos( )) η ( ρ) J ( = ) DE 4 DE = + ρ + 4ρ cos ( ) + 4ρ cos ( ) + (9a) 4ρ cos( )cos( ) 4ρcos( )cos( ) ρ J ( ) = σ. (9b) ( + ρ ) π By comparing J ( ) J ( ) and J ( ) it is apparent that J ( ) and J ( ) have the minimum exactly at (unbiased estimate) since J ( ) and J ( ) do not depend on. On the contrary as already observed J ( ) provides a biased estimate since J ( ) is -dependent. To conclude this section it is worth remarking that the new filter G ( z merges the two main appealing features of G ( z and G ( z : - similarly to G ( z a FIR filter can be obtained from G ( z by using ρ = ; - similarly to G ( z G ( z provides an unbiased estimate of ρ [). These features will be fully exploited in the following section in order to obtain closed-form frequency estimates based on FIR notch filters.. CLOSED-FORM FREQUECY ESTIMATIO A closed-form notch-based frequency estimate cannot be obtained if the filter has a IIR structure. Consider the FIR filters obtained by simply setting ρ = in () and in (7) (it has been already observed that setting ρ = in G ( z does not yield a FIR filter) namely: G ( z ) = cos( ) z + z G ( z ) = ( cos( ) z + z ). cos ( ) + Using such filters closed-form frequency estimators from the data can be obtained as follows. Closed form frequency estimator obtained using G (z - ). Consider the following cost function obtained by plugging in () the FIR notch filter G( z ): ( ) J ( ) = y( t) cos( ) y( t ) + y( t ) t = and differentiate J( ) with respect to : dj ( ) ( ) yt () cos( ) yt ( ) + yt ( ) =.() d t= ( sin( ) yt ( ) ) ote that () is quadratic with respect to cos( ) ; hence by solving dj ( ) d = with respect to cos( ) it is easy to see that the following holds: cos( ) = t = t = yt ( )( yt ( ) + yt ( )). yt ( ) The closed-form frequency estimator therefore is given by: yt ( )( yt ( ) + yt ( )) t = = arccos. () yt ( ) t = As the number of data grows tends to the minimum of the asymptotic cost function (5) (in the special case of ρ = ). After some cumbersome computation the following asymptotic expression of () is obtained: arccos π A cos( ) =. () πa + σ From () it is apparent that the frequency estimate is affected by a severe bias; note that the bias is null in the (trivial and unrealistic) case of zero noise ( σ = ); it grows as the SR decreases. Closed form frequency estimator obtained using G (z - ). Consider the following cost function obtained by plugging in () the FIR notch filter G( z ): J ( yt () cos( ) yt ( ) + yt ( ) ) cos ( ) + ( ) = t = and differentiate J( ) with respect to : dj( ) UM = d + UM = y( t) cos( ) y( t ) + y( t ) t = ( cos( )) ( ) ( + cos( ) ) sin( ) yt ( ) + + sin( ) ( yt ( ) cos( ) yt ( ) + yt ( ) ) ()
Consider now the problem of solving dj( ) d = with respect to. After some manipulation the following expression is obtained: sin( ) ( yt ( ) cos( ) yt ( ) + yt ( ) ) =.(4) t= ( yt ( ) + cos( ) yt ( ) + cos( ) yt ( ) ) Equation (4) admits a trivial solution: sin( ) =. Assuming that { π} the following quadratic form (with respect to cos( ) ) can be obtained from (4): yt ( ) ( yt ( ) + yt ( ) ) cos ( ) +. (5) + ( yt ( ) ( yt ( ) + yt ( ) ) ) cos( ) + yt ( ) ( yt ( ) + yt ( ) ) = From (5) a closed-form frequency estimator can be computed. It has the following expression: UM = arccos 4 yt ( ) ( yt ( ) + yt ( ) ). UM = ( y( t ) ( y( t) + y( t ) ) ) ( yt ( ) ( yt ( ) yt ( ) ) ) 8 yt ( ) ( yt ( ) yt ( ) ) (6) As the number of data grows tends to the minimum of the asymptotic cost function (8) (in the special case of ρ = ):. Thus the new filter G ( ) z provides a simple closed-form unbiased estimate of. Interestingly (6) is closely related to the method given in So and in So and Ip even if the derivation of this result is completely different. 4. RELATED METHODS In the literature other closed-form frequency estimators for harmonic signals in white noise have been proposed and analyzed. Two celebrated estimators are the Youle-Walker estimator and the Pisarenko Harmonic Decomposition (PHD) estimator (see e.g. Pisarenko 97 Xiao and Takodoro 994 and 995). In this section they will be briefly recalled and compared with the asymptotic version of the notch-based estimator (6). Youle-Walker approach. Given yt () = st () + nt () st () = Acos( t+ ϕ) n WG( σ ) the autocorrelation coefficients of order and say r and r respectively are given by: A r = E y t y t = [ ] () ( ) cos( ) (7) A r = E[ yt () yt ( ) ] = cos( ) By eliminating the parameter A in (7) the following equation is obtained: r cos ( ) r cos( ) r =. Its solution with respect to provides the Youle- Walker frequency estimator given by: r + r + 8r YW = arccos. (8) 4r PHD approach. Given a zero-mean stationary signal yt () its autocorrelation matrix of order is given by: r r r R = r r r r r r r = E yt ( ) r = E[ yt ( ) yt ( ) ] r = E[ yt ( ) yt ( ) ]. The eigenvector associated with the smallest eigenvalue of R has the following form: T r + r + 8r. (9) r Pisarenko (Pisarenko 97) has proven that if yt () = st () + nt () st () = Acos( t+ ϕ) n WG( σ ) the smallest eigenvalue of R must have the following simple expression: [ cos( ) ] T. () By comparing (9) and () the PHD frequency estimator is obtained: r + r + 8r PHD = arccos. () 4r Interestingly enough the Youle-Walker and PHD approaches provide exactly the same results. This has been recently proven and discussed in Xiao and Takodoro 994 and 995. Consider now the notch-based closed-form estimator (6). The following result holds. Proposition. Given a signal yt () = st () + nt () where st () = Acos( t+ ϕ) n WG( σ ) the notchfilter based estimator (6) asymptotically converges towards YW and PHD namely: r + r + 8r lim = arccos 4r
[ () ( ) ] [ () ( ) ] r= E yt yt r = E yt yt. Proof. If is large the following hold: lim yt ( ) ( yt ( ) yt ( ) ) + = t = (a) = lim yt () yt ( ) E[ yt () yt ( ) ] = t = lim ( yt ( ) ( yt ( ) yt ( ) ) ) + = t =. (b) = E y( t) y( t ) [ ] By plugging in (6) the asymptotic expressions () it is easy to see that: r + r + 8r lim = arccos 4r r = E[ yt () yt ( ) ] r = E[ yt () yt ( ) ]. From a theoretical point of view the fact that (asymptotically) YW PHD and are exactly the same is particularly interesting: it shows the equivalence of three classical approaches which have been independently conceived and developed following three completely different paths.
