CONFIGURATION SPACES OF C \ K CHRISTOPH SCHIESSL arxiv: v1 [math.co] 12 Jan 2018 Abstract. In this note, we collect mostly known formulas and methods to compute the standard and virtual Poincaré polynomials of the configuration spaces of the plane C \ k with k deleted points and compare the answers. Contents 1. Pyramidal Numbers 2 2. Poincaré Polynomials of C n (C \ k) 3 3. Poincaré Polynomials of F n (C \ k) 4 4. Virtual Poincaré Polynomials of F n (C \ k) 5 5. Virtual Poincaré Polynomials of C n (C \ k) 5 6. Comparision 5 References 6 For any complex quasi-projective algebraic variety X, the virtual Poincaré polynomial S(X) Z[x] is defined [DK87], [Tot02] by the properties S(X) = rk H i (X) x i for smooth, projective X, S(X) = S(X \ C) + S(C) for a closed subvariety C X, S(X Y ) = S(X)S(Y ). In contrast, we write P(X) = rk H i (X)x i for the standard Poincaré polynomial. For any space X, the ordered configuration space F n (X) = {x 1,..., x n X n x i x j } is the space of n distinct points in X. The symmetric group S n acts on F n (X) by permuting the points and the quotient C n (X) = F n (X)/S n Date: July 25, The author was supported by the grant ERC-2012-AdG MCSK. I want to thank Emanuele Delucchi, Emmanuel Kowalski, Johannes Schmitt, Junliang Shen for very helpful discussions and especially Rahul Pandharipande for his invaluable support. This is part of the author s PhD thesis. 1
2 CHRISTOPH SCHIESSL is the unordered configuration space. Computing their cohomology is a classical, hard problem. As the configuration space is the complement of diagonals, determining the virtual Poincaré polynomials is simpler and was done for example by Getzler [Get95] [Get99]. We look at the cohomology of ordered and unordered configuration spaces of C \ k. We compute their normal and virtual Poincaré Polynomials by existing methods and see that Stirling and pyramidal numbers show up. The calculation for C n (C \ k) seems not to be in the literature in this form. 1. Pyramidal Numbers The k-dimensional pyramidal numbers are integers P k,i for i 1, k 1. They satisify the recursions { 1 i = 0 i P 1,i = P k+1,i = P k,j. 0 otherwise An equivalent recursion would be Some examples are j=0 P k,0 = 1 P k+1,i+1 = P k,i+1 + P k+1,i. P 0,i = 1 P 1,i = i + 1 P 2,i = (i + 1)(i + 2). 2 Some pyramidal numbers P k,i : k i The recursion allows us to compute the generating function Pk,i x i = (1 + x + x 2 + x 3 + x ) k+1 1 = (1 x) k+1. By standard manipulation of generating series for k 0: 1 (1 x) k+1 = 1 d k 1 k! dx k 1 x = 1 + k)... (i + 2)(i + 1)x k! i 0(i i = ( ) i + k i i 0 The result P k,i = ( ) i + k i x i
CONFIGURATION SPACES OF C \ K 3 also holds for k = 0 and can be proved directly using the recursion ( ) ( ) ( ) i + k + 2 i + k + 1 i + k + 1 P k+1,i+1 = = + = P k,i+1 + P k+1,i. i + 1 i + 1 i The definition could be extended by setting P k,i = 0 for i < 0. In this way, all recursions stay valid for i < Poincaré Polynomials of C n (C \ k) Let M be a connected manifold. Napolitano [Nap03, Theorem 2] proved the following relation between the cohomology of unordered configuration spaces of M \ 1 and M \ 2: n H j (C n (M \ 2),Z) = H j t (C n t (M \ 1,Z)). We use the conventions t=0 H 0 (C 0 (M \ 1),Z) = Z H j (C 0 (M \ 1),Z) = 0 if j > 0. In general, this relation does not hold between the cohomology of the configuration spaces of M \ 1 and M as the proof works by pushing in points from the missing point. Theorem 2.1. We have P k 1,i i = n rk H i (C n (C \ k),z) = P k 1,i + P k 1,i 1 0 i < n 0 otherwise or P(C n (C \ k))y n 1 + xy 2 = (1 y)(1 xy) k. Proof. Write Q k (x, y) = n,i 0 rk H i (C n (C k),z) x i y n. Then applying Napolitano s recursion to M = S 2 \ k + 1 we get Arnold s computation Q k+1 (x, y) = Q k(x, y) 1 xy. H 0 (C n (C),Q) = Q H 1 (C n (C),Q) = Q if n 2 H i (C n (C),Q) = 0 if i 2 in [Arn70] provides initial values for k = 0: Hence we have shown Q 0 (x, y) = 1 + y + (1 + x)y 2 + (1 + x)y 3 + = 1 + xy2 1 y Q k (x, y) = 1 + xy 2 (1 y)(1 xy) k.
4 CHRISTOPH SCHIESSL Expansion now proves the theorem. This theorem can also be deduced from [DK16, Prop. 3.5]. As C 1 (C \ k) = C \ k, the reality check for n = 1 works: 1 for j = 0 rk H j (C 1 (C \ k),z) = k for j = 1. 0 otherwise We can conclude that rk H j (C n (C \ k),z) stabilizes (seen as a function of n) for n > j. Corollary 2.2. In the limit we get rk H j (C (C \ k),z) = P k 1,j + P k 1,j 1 or as a generating series P(C (C \ k)) = 1 + x (1 x) k. Taking stability for granted, this can be deduced by the stable version of Napolitano s recursion: j H j (C (C \ k + 1),Z) = rk H t (C (C \ k),z). Vershinin [Ver99, Cor. 11.1] showed that t=0 ( ) k H (C (C \ k) H (Ω 2 S 3 ) H (ΩS 2 ) extending the May-Segal formula [Seg73], [Ver99, Th. 8.11] H (C (C) H (Ω 2 S 3 ). Combining the results of Arnold and the cohomology of the loop spaces of a sphere H i (ΩS 2 ) = Z for i 0 [Hat04, Example 1.5]), this gives back corollary (2.2). 3. Poincaré Polynomials of F n (C \ k) Arnold s calculation of H (F n (C),Z) can be extended to H (F n (C \ k),z) via the fiber bundles with fiber C \ (k + n 1). F n (C \ k) F n 1 (C \ k) Theorem 3.1. [Ver98, Thm. 7.1] We have P(F(C \ k, n)) = (1 + kx)(1 + (k + 1)x) (1 + (n + k 1)x).
We have CONFIGURATION SPACES OF C \ K 5 4. Virtual Poincaré Polynomials of F n (C \ k) S(C \ k) = S(CP 1 \ k + 1) = x (k + 1) = x 2 k. Using the same fiber bundles or [Get95, Theorem, page 2] we get Theorem 4.1. The virtual Poincaré polynomials of F n (C \ l) is given by S(F n (C \ k)) = (x 2 k)(x 2 k 1) (x 2 k n + 1). 5. Virtual Poincaré Polynomials of C n (C \ k) As S(C \ k) = (x 2 k), the calculations of Getzler [Get95, Cor. 5.7] allow us to conclude S(C n (C \ k)) y n = (1 y2 x 2 )(1 y) k (1 yx 2 )(1 y 2 ) k, which simplifies to Theorem 5.1. [Get95] The virtual Poincaré polynomials of C n (C \ k) are given by the following generating series: S(C n (C \ k)) y n = 6. Comparision We observe that under the variable transformation the respective generating series P(C n (C \ k)) y n transform into S(C n (C \ k)) y n x 1/x 2, y yx 2 (1 y 2 x 2 ) (1 yx 2 )(1 + y) k P(F n (C \ k)) y n P(F n (C \ k)) y n. This means, in this case the classical and virtual Poincaré polynomials are in some sense dual to each other. Example 6.1. We look 3-pointed configuration spaces of C \ 2: P(C 3 (C \ 2)) = 4x 3 + 5x 2 + 3x + 1 P(F 3 (C \ 2)) = 24x x 2 + 9x + 1 S(C 3 (C \ 2) = x 6 3x 4 + 5x 2 4 S(F 3 (C \ 2)) = x 4 9x x 2 24
