We analyze the staility of the trivial fixed point and the positive fixed point after reducing the equation into a nonautonomous difference equation. We also discuss the existence of ounded solutions for the reduced nonautonomous difference equation. Then we investigate the staility of the positive fixed point y means of Lyapunov s second method developed for nonautonomous difference equations. We find conditions formulated through the parameters of the model and the argument function. We also present numerical simulations to validate our findings. However, in some cases, it may not provide consistent results that meet the realities. This fact may arise from the negligence of time delays, impacts or other specific phenomena that are not suitale to e modeled y classical differential equations. The logistic equation is one of the well-known models that descrie the growth of a single species population with limited resources. The general logistic population model is descried y dx dt = x (t)= ( a x(t) ) x(t), (1) where a is the intrinsic growth rate and a is the carrying capacity of the population, x(t) represents the population density at time t. In(1), it is assumed that the growth rate of a population at any time t depends on the numer of individuals at that time. In practice, the process of reproduction is not instantaneous. For example, in a Daphnia a large clutch presumaly is determined not y the concentration of unconsumed food availale when the eggs hatch, ut y the amount of food availale when the eggs were forming, some time efore they pass into the road pouch. Between this time of determination and the time of 2015 Aruğaslan and Güzel. 2 Aruğaslan and Güzel Advances in Difference Equations (2015) 2015:173 Page 2 of 10 hatching many newly hatched animals may have een lierated from the rood pouches of other Daphnia in the culture, thus increasing the population [1]. Hutchinson [2] assumed egg formation to occur τ units of time efore hatching and proposed the following more realistic logistic equation: x (t)= ( a x(t τ) ) x(t), (2) where a and have the same meaning as in the logistic equation (1), τ is a positive constant. Equation (2) is known as Hutchinson s equation or (autonomous) delayed logistic equation. There exist many studies aout logistic equation with or without time delay [3 5]. In general, delay differential equations exhiit much more complicated dynamics than ordinary differential equations since a time delay could cause a stale equilirium to ecome unstale and lead the populations to fluctuate. There are also several papers [6 8] that study the logistic equation with piecewise constant argument of the following form: x (t)= ( a x ( [t] )) x(t), (3) where [ ] denotes the greatest integer function. Here, the distance etween the successive switching moments is always constant and equal to 1. Differential equations with piecewise constant argument [t] wasintroducedy CookeandWiener [9]. Akhmet hasgeneralized the concept of differential equations with piecewise constant argument y taking aritrary piecewise constant functions as arguments [10] and thus it has een assumed that there is no restriction on the distance etween the consecutive switching moments of the argument. Later, this class of differential equations and its applications have een studied y several authors [11 17]. Let N and R + e the set of natural numers and nonnegative real numers, respectively, i.e., N = {0,1,2,...}, R + =[0, ). Denote y R n the n-dimensional real space for a positive integer n and y the Euclidean norm in R n.in[6], Altıntan investigated the staility for (3) y reducing it into the following autonomous discrete equation: x k+1 = F(x k )=x k e a x k, (4) where x k = x(k), k N. It is indicated that the trivial fixed point x =0of(4)isasymptotically stale (resp., unstale) if e a < 1 (resp., e a > 1) and the positive fixed point x = a of (4) is asymptotically stale (resp., unstale) if 1 a < 1 (resp., 1 a >1)sinceF (0) = e a and F ( a )=1 a. Our aim in this paper is to consider the logistic growth model with piecewise constant argument of generalized type given y x (t)= ( a x ( β(t) )) x(t), (5) where a and are assumed to e nonzero constants of the same sign, β(t) =θ k for t [θ k, θ k+1 ), k N and θ k, k N, is a real-valued sequence such that 0 = θ 0 < θ 1 < < θ k < with θ k as k. Since the discrete moments of time where the argument changes its constancy may not e equally distanced, differential equations with piecewise constant argument of generalized type may lead to nonautonomous difference equations. To the est of our knowledge,

3 Aruğaslan and Güzel Advances in Difference Equations (2015) 2015:173 Page 3 of 10 it is the first time in the literature that a differential equation with piecewise constant argument of generalized type is reduced into a nonautonomous difference equation. We investigate the staility of the fixed points x =0andx = a after reducing (5) intoa nonautonomous difference equation. We discuss the existence of ounded solutions for the reduced nonautonomous difference equation. The oundedness of solutions enales us to use Lyapunov s second method developed for nonautonomous difference equations of the following type [18]: u(k +1)=f ( k, u(k) ), k N, (6) where u R n, f is a given function of k and the values u(k)atk N. 2 Preliminaries Let us give the necessary definitions and theorems [12, 18, 19] thatwilleusefulinthe next section. Staility definitions for difference equations are similar to the ones given for classical ordinary differential equations. Concepts of staility and their definitions for difference equations can e found in the ook [18]. Let the function f in (6)satisfyf (k, 0) = 0 for all k N.Then(6) admits the trivial solution u =0. Definition 2.1 Afunctionx(t) is a solution of (5)onR + if (i) x(t) is continuous on R + ; (ii) the derivative x (t) exists for t R + with the possile exception of the points θ k, k N, where one-sided derivatives exist; (iii) (5)issatisfiedyx(t) on each interval (θ k, θ k+1 ), k N, and it holds for the right derivative of x(t) at the points θ k, k N. Definition 2.2 Afunctionφ(r) is said to elong to the class K if and only if φ C[[0, ρ), R + ], φ(0) = 0 and φ(r) is strictly increasing in r. Define S ρ = {u R n : u < ρ}. Definition 2.3 A continuous function w : S ρ R is said to e positive definite if (i) w(0) = 0 and (ii) w(u)>0for all u 0, u S ρ. It is negativedefiniteif w is a positive definite function. Definition 2.4 A continuous function V : N S ρ R is said to e positive definite if there exists a positive definite function w : S ρ R such that (i) V(k,0)=0for all k N and (ii) V(k, u) w(u) for all k N and for all u S ρ. It is negative definite if V(k, u) is a positive definite function. Without loss of generality of our results, consider solutions of (6), whose initial value is taken at k =0.Letthesolutionu(k)=u(k, u 0 )of(6) exist and satisfy u(k) < ρ for all k N. Along this solution u(k)of(6), the variation of the function V(k, u)isdefinedy ( ) ( ) ( ) V (6) k, u(k) = V k +1,u(k +1) V k, u(k) = V ( k +1,f ( k, u(k) )) V ( k, u(k) ).

4 Aruğaslan and Güzel Advances in Difference Equations (2015) 2015:173 Page 4 of 10 Theorem 2.5 If there exists a positive definite scalar function V(k, u) C[N S ρ, R + ] such that V (6) (k, u(k)) 0, then the trivial solution u =0of the difference equation (6) is stale. Theorem 2.6 If there exists a positive definite scalar function V(k, u) C[N S ρ, R + ] such that V (6) (k, u(k)) α( u(k) ), where α K, then the trivial solution u =0of the difference equation (6) is asymptotically stale. 3 Main results Let us reduce (5) into a difference equation. For t [θ 0, θ 1 ), (5) takes the following form: x (t)= ( a x(θ 0 ) ) x(t). Ifwesolvethelastequation,wefindx(t) =x(θ 0 )e (a x(θ 0))(t θ 0 ). It follows from the continuity of the solutions that x(θ 1 )=x(θ 0 )e (a x(θ 0))(θ 1 θ 0 ).Fort [θ 1, θ 2 ), we have x(θ 2 )= x(θ 1 )e (a x(θ 1))(θ 2 θ 1 ). Continuing the process on each interval [θ k, θ k+1 ), k 2, in a similar manner, it is easy to see that x(θ k+1 )=x(θ k )e (a x(θ k))(θ k+1 θ k ). (7) If we define a function h : N R + given y the rule h(k)=θ k, then we otain the difference equation u(k +1)=u(k)e (a u(k))(θ k+1 θ k ), k N, (8) where u = x h. It is easy to see that the difference equation (8)hastwofixedpointsu =0 and u = a and the qualitative ehavior of these solutions is equivalent to that of the fixed points x =0andx = a of (7). First, we assume that the distance etween the consecutive switching moments is any constant, i.e., (A1) there exists a positive constant θ such that θ k+1 θ k = θ for all k N. If the condition (A1) is fulfilled, then (8) turns into an autonomous difference equation of the following form: u(k +1)=f ( u(k) ) = u(k)e (a u(k))θ, k N. (9) Theorem 3.1 If a <0then the fixed point u =0of (9) is asymptotically stale and it is unstale if a >0.If 0<aθ <2then the fixed point u = a of (9) is asymptotically stale, and it is unstale if a <0or aθ >2. Proof For the fixed point u =0,f (0) = e aθ <1ifandonlyifa < 0. For the fixed point u = a, the conclusion follows from the equality f ( a )=1 aθ. Itisclearthat 1 aθ <1ifand only if 0 < aθ < 2. Thus, the proof is completed. Results of Theorem 3.1 caneseeninfigures1-5. Henceforth, we assume unless otherwise stated that the distances etween the successive elements of the sequence θ k, k N, arenotequal.thus,thedifferenceθ k+1 θ k is a

For convenience, we denote θ k+1 θ k = g(k), k N, where g is a non-constant function. Moreover, we shall use the following assumption. (A2) There exist positive constants θ and θ such that θ θ k+1 θ k = g(k) θ for all k N. Since there is no restriction on the distance etween the consecutive switching moments of the argument, the reduced difference equation for (5) is of the nonautonomous type given y u(k +1)=f ( k, u(k) ), k N, (10) where f (k, u(k)) = u(k)e (a u(k))g(k). Let u(k) e any solution of (10)withu(0) = u 0 > 0 for iological reasons. From now on, we shall investigate the staility of the fixed points u =0andu = a of the nonautonomous difference equation (10). We shall study the staility of the positive fixed point u = a y meansoflyapunov ssecondmethod. Theorem 3.2 If a >0then the trivial solution u =0of the difference equation (10) is unstale. Proof Assume that a >0andu = 0 of the difference equation (10)isstale.Chooseε = a 2 and consider a solution u(k), k N, of(10) withu(0) = u 0 > 0. Then there exists a δ >0 such that 0 < u(k) < a 2 for all k N, whenever0<u 0 < δ. Provided that 0 < u 0 < δ, the term a u(k) is positive for all k N. Hence, it follows that u(k +1)=u(k)e (a u(k))(θ k+1 θ k ) u(k)e (a u(k))θ > u(k). Thus, we see that the sequence u(k), k N, is a strictly increasing sequence ounded aove y a 2.Thenwemusthavelim k u(k)=l a. Letting k in the inequality u(k +1) 2 u(k)e (a u(k))θ, we find a contradiction. This completes the proof. Theorem 3.3 If a <0then the trivial solution u =0of the difference equation (10) is asymptotically stale.

Figure 7 u = 0 is asymptotically stale. Solutions of (10)witha = 0.5, = 1,andθ i = i2 +2i i+1 for different initial values u 0 = 0.4 (red dots), u 0 =0.3 (yellow dots), u 0 =0.2(luedots),andu 0 =0.1 (green dots). Proof Assume that a <0.Letε > 0 e given. Consider a solution u(k), k N,of(10) with u(0) = u 0 >0.Chooseδ = min{ε, a }.For0<u 0 < δ,wecanseethatu(k), k N,isastrictly decreasing sequence. Thus u(k) <u 0 < δ ε for all k =1,2,... This shows that u =0is stale. For the same δ, it can e shown easily that lim k u(k) = 0. Therefore, the trivial solution u = 0 of the difference equation (10) is asymptotically stale. Simulation results of Theorem 3.2 and Theorem 3.3 are given y Figures 6 and 7. Theorem 3.4 If a <0then u = a of the difference equation (10) is unstale. Proof We take a < 0 and suppose the contrary. Let u(k), k N, denote the solution of (10) withu(0) = u 0 >0.Thenforε = a 2,wecanfindaδ >0suchthat u 0 a < δ implies u(k) a < a 2 for all k N. For a < u 0 < a + δ, u(k), k N, is a strictly increasing sequence ounded aove y 3a 2. Thus, the solution converges to a numer L ( a, 3a ]. How- 2 ever, when we take the limit of the inequality u(k +1) u(k)e (a u(k))θ as k,itgives the contradiction L a.for a δ < u 0 < a, u(k), k N, is a strictly decreasing sequence ounded elow y a 2.Then a 2 L = lim k u(k)< a. Letting k in the inequality u(k +1) u(k)e (a u(k))θ,wefindl a, a contradiction. As a consequence, u = a of the difference equation (10)isunstale. The result of Theorem 3.4 is illustrated in Figure 8. Now, we prove the existence of ounded solutions for (10), which will e needed in Theorem 3.9.

Definition 3.5 AsetV R is called a positively invariant set of (10) ifu 0 V implies u(k)=u(k, u 0 ) V for all k N. Lemma 3.6 If 0<aθ 1, then the set Ɣ = {u R :0<u < a } is positively invariant for the difference equation (10). Proof Let 0 < aθ 1andu(k), k N, e the solution of (10)startingatu(0) = u 0 Ɣ.Assume that 0 < u(m)< a for some m N.Wehaveu(m)<u(m+1)=u(m)e(a u(m))(θ m+1 θ m ) u(m)e (a u(m))θ.defineh(u(m)) = u(m)e (a u(m))θ.since0<aθ 1, we see that H(u(m)) < a on the interval (0, a ). Thus, we get u(m)<u(m +1)< a, which implies that u(m +1) Ɣ. It is seen y induction that u(k) Ɣ for all k N. Lemma 3.7 If 0<aθ 1 then the set Ɣ = {u R :0<u κ, κ a } is positively invariant for the difference equation (10). Proof Let 0 < aθ 1andu(k), k N, e the solution of (10)startingatu(0) = u 0 Ɣ.Ifu 0 = a Ɣ then u(k)= a Ɣ for all k N. Ifu 0 (0, a ) Ɣ, then we know from Lemma 3.6 that u(k) (0, a ) Ɣ for all k N. Let us consider the case a < u 0 κ. Then either a < u(k) u 0 κ for all k N,or0<u(m) a for some natural numer m 1, which implies that 0 < u(m) u(k) a κ for all k m. In any case, we see that the conclusion is true. Thus, the proof is completed. Lemma 3.8 If aθ 1 then the set Ɣ = {u R :0<u κ, κ 1 θ eaθ 1 } is positively invariant for the difference equation (10). Proof Let aθ 1andu(k), k N, e the solution of (10)startingatu(0) = u 0 Ɣ.Assume that u(m) Ɣ for some m N. If0<u(m) a,then0<u(m) u(m +1) H(u(m)) = u(m)e (a u(m))θ 1 θ eaθ 1 κ.if a u(m) κ,then0<u(m +1) u(m) κ.thus,u(k) Ɣ for all k N y induction. If we comine the results of Lemma 3.7 and Lemma 3.8, we can state the next result. Corollary 1 If a >0then the set Ɣ = {u R :0<u κ, κ 1 θ eaθ 1 } is positively invariant for the difference equation (10). Theorem 3.9 If a >0,0<u 0 κ, where κ > 1 θ eaθ 1 and θ 2 (κ a )<2θ(ln κ ln a ), then the fixed point u = a of the difference equation (10) is asymptotically stale.

9 Aruğaslan and Güzel Advances in Difference Equations (2015) 2015:173 Page 9 of 10 Proof Let u(k), k N, e the solution of (10)satisfying0<u 0 κ,whereκ > 1 θ eaθ 1.Then Corollary 1 results in 0 < u(k) κ for all k N.Definey = u a.notethat a < y κ a. It is clear that the fixed point u = a of (10) is transformed to the trivial solution y =0of the difference equation ( y(k +1)= y(k)+ a ) e y(k)g(k) a. (11) Let V(y)=[ln(y + a ) ln a ]2.WeseethatV is positive definite. For this function V,we have V (11) ( k, y(k) ) = 2g(k)y(k) ln y(k)+ a a + 2 g 2 (k)y 2 (k). (12) Since ln y+ a a a y for y > a,wehavefor a < y 0, V (11) (k, y) 2θy ln y + a a + 2 θ 2 y a θy2 + 2 θ 2 y 2 = 2 ( 2) 2θ aθ y 2. a The assumption θ 2 (κ a )<2θ(ln κ ln a )impliesthataθ 2 <2θ. Hence,weget V (11) (k, y) w(y), where w(y)= 2 a (2θ aθ 2 )y 2 is a positive definite function. Then we conclude that V (11) (k, y)isnegativedefinite. For 0 y κ a, consider the function F(y)= 2θ ln y+ a a + 2 θ 2 y.itcaneasilyeseen that F(y)<0,y 0,wheneverθ 2 (κ a )<2θ(ln κ ln a )andf(0) = 0. Since F(y)isnegative definite, we derive that V (11) (k, y)isnegativedefinite. Consequently, V (11) (k, y) is negative definite independent of the sign of y. Then, according to Theorem 2.6,thefixedpointy = 0 of the difference equation (11) is asymptotically stale. Thus, the fixed point u = a of the difference equation (10) is asymptotically stale. We present the numerical simulation of the result of Theorem 3.9 in Figure 9. Figure 9 u = a = 0.5 is asymptotically stale. Solutions of (10)witha =1.6, =3.2,andθ i = i2 +10i i+11 for different initial values u 0 =0.6(reddots)and u 0 =0.4(luedots).

10 Aruğaslan and Güzel Advances in Difference Equations (2015) 2015:173 Page 10 of 10 4 Conclusion We see that a differential equation with piecewise constant argument, whose distance etween the two consecutive switching moments is equal, can e reduced into an autonomous difference equation. However, if we have a differential equation with generalized piecewise constant argument whose switching moments are ordered aritrarily, then it generates a nonautonomous difference equation. This fact stimulates us to study the effects of generalized piecewise constant arguments on the staility of the fixed points of the logistic equation. Our results show that the existence of a generalized piecewise constant argument influences the ehavior of the solutions. As far as we know, it is the first time in the literature that one reduces a differential equation with piecewise constant argument of generalized type into a nonautonomous difference equation. This idea can e used for the investigation of differential equations with piecewise constant argument of generalized type.
