Prepared for sumission to JHEP HRI-RECAPP Higgs oson production through annihilation at threshold in N LO QCD arxiv: v1 [hep-ph] 4 Aug 014 Taushif Ahmed, a Narayan Rana a and V. Ravindran a Regional Centre for Accelerator-ased Particle Physics, Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahaad, India The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, India taushif@hri.res.in, narayan@hri.res.in, ravindra@imsc.res.in Astract: We present threshold enhanced N LO QCD corrections to inclusive Higgs production through ottom anti-ottom annihilation at hadron colliders using threshold resummed cross section. The resummed cross section is otained using factorization properties and Sudakov resummation of the inclusive cross section. We use the recent results on threshold N LO corrections in QCD for Drell-Yan production and three loop QCD corrections to Higgs form factor with ottom anti-ottom quark to achieve this task. This is the first step towards the evaluation of complete N LO result. We have numerically demonstrated the importance of such corrections at the LHC. Keywords: QCD, Higgs, Threshold corrections
Contents 1 Introduction 1 Threshold resummation Results 1 Introduction The discovery of Higgs oson y ATLAS [1] and CMS [] collaorations of the Large Hadron Collider LHC at CERN has not only shed the light on the dynamics ehind the electroweak symmetry reaking ut also put the Standard Model SM of particle physics on a firmer ground. In the SM, the elementary particles such as quarks, leptons and gauge osons, Z, W ± acquire their masses through spontaneous symmetry reaking SSB. The Higgs mechanism provides the framework for SSB. The SM predicts the existence of a Higgs oson whose mass is a parameter of the model. The recent discovery of Higgs oson provides a valuale information on this, namely on its mass which is aout 15.5 GeV. The searches for the Higgs oson have een going on for several decades in various experiments. Earlier experiments such as LEP [] and Tevatron [4] played an important role in the discovery y the LHC collaorations through narrowing down its possile mass range. LEP excluded Higgs oson of mass elow GeV and their precision electroweak measurements [5] hinted the mass less than 15 GeV at 5% confidence level CL, while Tevatron excluded Higgs oson of mass in the range GeV at 5% CL. Higgs osons are produced dominantly at the LHC via gluon gluon fusion through top quark loop, while the su-dominant ones are vector oson fusion, associated production of Higgs oson with vector osons, with top anti-top pairs and also in ottom anti-ottom annihilation. The inclusive productions of Higgs oson in gluon gluon [6], vector oson fusion processes [7] and associated production with vector osons [8] are known to next to next to leading order NNLO accuracy in QCD. Higgs production in ottom anti-ottom annihilation is also known to NNLO accuracy in the variale flavour scheme VFS [, 10], while it is known to NLO in the fixed flavour scheme FFS [11]. In the minimal super symmetric standard model MSSM, the coupling of ottom quarks to Higgs ecomes large in the large tan β region, where tan β is the ratio of vacuum expectation values of up and down type Higgs fields. This can enhance contriutions from ottom anti-ottom annihilation suprocesses. While the theoretical predictions of NNLO [6] and next to next to leading log NNLL [1] QCD corrections and of two loop electroweak effects [1] played an important role in the Higgs discovery, the theoretical uncertainties resulting from factorization and renormalization scales are not fully under control. Hence, the efforts to go eyond NNLO are 1
going on intensively. Some of the ingredients to otain N LO QCD corrections are already availale. For example, quark and gluon form factors [14 17], the mass factorization kernels [18] and the renormalization constant [1] for the effective operator descriing the coupling of Higgs oson with the SM fields in the infinite top quark mass limit up to three loop level in dimensional regularization are known for some time. In addition, NNLO soft contriutions are known [0] to all orders in ɛ for oth DY and Higgs productions using dimensional regularization with space time dimension eing d = 4 + ɛ. They were used to otain the partial N LO threshold effects [1, ] to Drell-Yan production of di-leptons and inclusive productions of Higgs oson through gluon gluon fusion and in ottom antiottom annihilation. Threshold contriution to the inclusive production cross section is expanded in terms of δ1 z and D i z where ln1 z D i z = z with the scaling parameter z = m H /ŝ for Higgs and z = m l + l /ŝ for DY. Here m H, m l + l and ŝ are mass of the Higgs oson, invariant mass of the di-leptons and center of mass energy of the partonic reaction responsile for production mechanism respectively. The missing δ1 z terms for the complete N LO threshold contriutions to the Higgs production through gluon gluon fusion are now availale due to the seminal work y Anastasiou et al [] where the relevant soft contriutions were otained from the real radiations at N LO level. In [4], we exploited the universal structure of the soft radiations to otain the corresponding soft gluon contriutions to DY production, which led to the evaluation of missing δ1 z part of the N LO threshold corrections, later confirmed in [5]. For the Higgs production through annihilation, till date, only partial N LO threshold corrections are known []. It was not possile to determine the δ1 z at N LO due to the lack of information on three loop finite part of ottom anti-ottom higgs form factor in QCD and the soft gluon radiation at N LO level. The recent results on Higgs form factor with ottom anti-ottom y Gehrmann and Kara [6] and on the universal soft distriution otained for the Drell-Yan production [4] can now e used to otain δ1 z part of the threshold N LO contriution. For the soft gluon radiations in the annihilation, the results from [4] can e used as they do not depend on the flavour of the incoming quark states. We have set ottom quark mass to e zero throughout except in the Yukawa coupling. In the next section, we present the details of the threshold resummation and in section we present our results for threshold N LO QCD contriutions to Higgs production through annihilation at hadron colliders and their numerical impact. The numerical impact of threshold enhanced N LO contriutions is demonstrated for the LHC energy s = 14 TeV y studying the staility of the perturation theory under factorization and renormalization scales. Finally we give a rief summary of our findings. Threshold resummation The interaction of ottom quarks and Higgs oson is given y the action SI = λ d 4 x φxψ xψ x.1 +
where ψ x denotes the ottom quark field and φx the scalar field. λ is the Yukawa coupling given y m /ν, with the ottom quark mass m and the vacuum expectation value ν 46 GeV. In MSSM, for the pseudoscalar Higgs oson, we need to replace λφxψ xψ x y λ φxψ xγ 5 ψ x in the aove equation. The MSSM couplings are given y m sin α ν cos β, φ = h, λ = m cos α ν cos β, φ = H, m tan β ν, φ = A respectively. The angle α measures the mixing of weak and mass eigenstates of neutral Higgs osons. We use VFS scheme throughout, hence except in the Yukawa coupling, m is taken to e zero like other light quarks in the theory. The inclusive Higgs production through ottom anti-ottom annihilation can e computed using σ s, q = σ 0 µ R ac dx 1 dx f a x 1, µ F f c x, µ F acŝ, q, µ F, µ R,. where f a x 1, µ F and f cx, µ F are parton distriution functions with momentum fractions x 1 and x respectively. µ F is the factorization scale and ŝ = x 1 x s where s ŝ is the square of hadronic partonic center of mass energy. The orn cross section is given y σ 0 = πλ µ R 1m H.. The orn normalized partonic suprocesses after mass factorization are denoted y ac where initial state partons are a and c. Here, q = m H, µ F results from mass factorization and the renormalization scale µ R is due to UV renormalization. ac can e decomposed into two parts denoted y sv and,r ac. acz, q, µ R, µ F = sv z, q, µ R, µ F +,R ac z, q, µ R, µ F.4 where sv contains only distriutions such as δ1 z and D i, often called threshold contriutions and the second term contains regular terms in z. Following [], the threshold resumed cross section at the partonic level in d = 4 + ɛ dimensions is given y sv z, q, µ R, µ F = C exp Ψ z, q, µ R, µ F, ɛ.5 ɛ=0 where the scaling variale z = q /ŝ and Ψ z, q, µ R, µ F, ɛ is a finite distriution. The aove resummed expression follows from factorization properties of the inclusive cross section and Sudakov resummation of soft gluons in the QCD amplitudes. The symol C implies convolution with the following expansion Ce fz = δ1 z + 1 1! fz + 1 fz fz ! Here means Mellin convolution and fz is a distriution of the kind δ1 z and D i. We drop all the regular terms in z in the evaluation of threshold contriution sv.
In d = 4 + ɛ dimensions, the distriution Ψ receives contriutions from UV renormalization constant Z for Yukawa coupling λ, the Higgs form factor ˆF from ottom anti-ottom, soft gluon distriution Φ from the real radiations in partonic suprocesses and the mass factorization kernels Γ that remove the collinear singularities from the initial state ottom quark states. For the factorization scale, we have fixed µ R = m H and varied µ F etween 0.1 m H and 10 m H. We find that the perturation theory ehaves etter if we include more and more higher order terms see Fig.1. To summarize, we have systematically developed a framework to compute threshold contriutions in QCD to the production of Higgs oson in ottom anti-ottom annihilation suprocesses at the hadron colliders. Factorization of UV, soft and collinear singularities and exponentiation of their sum allow us to otain threshold corrections order y order in perturation theory. Using the recently otained N LO soft distriution function for Drell-Yan production and the three loop Higgs form factor with ottom anti-ottom quarks, we have otained threshold N LO corrections to Higgs production through ottom antiottom annihilation. We have also studied the staility of our result under renormalization and factorization scales. Acknowledgments We sincerely thank T. Gehrmann for constant encouragement and fruitful discussions.
