THE DIVISOR MATRIX, DIRICHLET SERIES AND SL,Z, II arxiv: v8 [math.nt] 1 Mar 010 PETER SIN AND JOHN G. THOMPSON Abstract. We examine an elliptic curve constructed in an earlier paper from a certain representation of SL,Z on the space of convergent Dirichlet series. The curve is observed to be a modular curve for Γ 1 1 and a certain orbit of modular functions is thereby associated with the Riemann zeta function. Explicit descriptions are given of these functions and of the permutation action ofsl,z on them. One of the functions has a zero in the arc {e iθ π θ π 3 }. The values of this particular function along paths formed from SL,Z-images of the arc are used to construct paths between zeros of the zeta function. 000 Mathematics Subject Classification. 11M06, 0C1. 1
This paper is a continuation of []. Here we examine some consequences of Theorems 9.1 and If X, Y are indeterminates, set x = X+1, y = Y/X. We check that x 1y +xy xx 1 = Y +XY +Y X 3 X. X Since ζs 1φs +ζsφs ζsζs 1 = 0, Res >> 0, it follows that 1 Y +XY +Y = X 3 +X, where X = ζ 1, Y = φ/ζ. As the equation 1 is in long Weierstrass form [3, page ], we compute that it has discriminant 1, conductor 1, and j-invariant 1/1. Thus, 1 and the Taniyama-Weil Conjecture lead to Γ1. The curve is labeled 1A in [1] and 1A8 in J. Cremona s tableshttp:// Following Shimura [4] and Fricke [], if n N, set a b Γn = { SL,Z a d 1,b c 0 mod n}, c d a b Γ 0 n = { Γ1 b 0 mod n}, c d a b Γ 1 n = { Γ c d 0 n a d 1 mod n}. If G is a subgroup of Γ1 of finite index, XG denotes the function field of G. Following Fricke [], set ηz = e πiz/1 1 q n, q = e πiz, η m z = η z, m N. m n=1 It is a classical fact that XΓ 1 1 is of genus 1 and has j-invariant 1/1. Therefore, there exist functions Z and Φ of the upper half plane which generate XΓ 1 1 as a field extension of C and satisfy the equation Zz 1Φz +ZzΦz ZzZz 1 = 0, z H. We now proceed to give an explicit construction of such functions Z and Φ. By Fricke [], XΓ 0 1 = Cτ,σ, where τ = η 3 η /η 1 η 1 3
THE DIVISOR MATRIX, DIRICHLET SERIES AND SL, Z, II 3 and σ = τ 4 10τ 3 13τ +10τ +1 = τ ατ α τ βτ β, where α = 1, α = 1 +, β = 11, β = Since I fixes every element of XG for every subgroup G in Γ1 of finite index, it follows that I,Γ 1 1 is the largest subgroup of Γ1which actstrivially on XΓ 1 1. Since I,Γ 1 1 Γ 0 1and Γ 0 1/ I,Γ 1 1 is cyclic of order 4, it follows that XΓ 1 1 is a Galois extension of XΓ 0 1 and that GalXΓ 1 1/XΓ 0 1 = Z/4Z. Let λ = η 3 1 η6 3 η 3. Then λ is related to τ and σ by the equation λ = cσ +d 0τ 4, where c = 4 i=0 f iτ i and d = 6 i=0 e iτ i with f 0 = 1,f 1 = 19,f = 104,f 3 = 1,f 4 = 1, e 0 = 1,e 1 = 4,e = 180,e 3 = 374,e 4 = 396,e = 70,e 6 = 1. LetH bethesubgroupofindexinγ 0 1containingK = I,Γ 1 1. Using the standard transformation formulae for η and generators for H, one sees that λ is fixed by H. Next, we let Z be a branch of the function defined by the equation 3 τ λ+ 33 3/ τ 3 Z 3Z+1 = λ and δ = 1 + τ βτ +γτ+δz Z+1, 3 with γ = To make a definite choice of a germ of Z at i, we observe that τi and λi are real, and pick Z so that Zi has positive imaginary part. It is straightforward to check that 4 B 1 τ +B 0 = 0, with B i = 4 b ij Z j, i = 0,1, j=0
4 PETER SIN AND JOHN G. THOMPSON b 00 = b 04 = 1 b 01 = b 03 = 7 3, b0 = 6+3 b 10 = b 14 = 1, b 11 = b 13 = +, b 1 = 9 3. Hence, Cσ,τ,Z = Cσ,Z. From and 3, we get B 4 1σ = B 0 +αb 1 B 0 +α B 1 B 0 +βb 1 B 0 +β B 1. We compute that Set so that 3 B 0 +α B 1 = 3 ZZ 1, + B 0 +αb 1 = Z Z +1, B 0 +β B 1 = + Z 1 4Z 7Z +4, Ψ = B 0 +βb 1 = 9 3 Z +3Z = B1 σ 3 1+, Z 1 Z Z +1Z +3Z +1 Ψ = 4Z 3 7Z +4Z, and Set Xσ,τ,Z = CΨ,Z. 6 Φ = Ψ Z Z 1, so that By and 6, Xσ,τ,Z = CΦ,Z. Z 1Φ +ZΦ ZZ 1 = 0. We summarize these calculations in the following statement.
THE DIVISOR MATRIX, DIRICHLET SERIES AND SL, Z, II Theorem II.1. XΓ 1 1 is generated as a field extension of C by the functions Z and Φ defined above, which satisfy Zz 1Φz +ZzΦz ZzZz 1 = 0, z H. We compute that Γ1 : I,Γ 1 1 = 96, and we construct an explicit set of coset representatives {P i 1 i 96}, so that Γ1 = 96 i=1 I,Γ 1 1 P i. These are given in the Appendix. We set 7 Z i = Z P i, Z = {Z i 1 i 96}. The elements of Z are called avatars of ζ. We check that if z 0 H and Zz 0 = 0, then τz 0 = 1+, σz 0 = 0. and from Fricke [, page 40, equations 17 and 18], so Set j = τ +10τ + 3 τ, τ = η /η 1 6, τ = τ4 9τ 3 9τ 1+τ 4τ 1σ, τ jz 0 = E = {e iθ π θ π 3 }. Since E and [0,178] are in bijection via z jz, z E, it follows that there is a unique c E such that jc = 13. Since jz = jz if and only if z and z are in the same Γ1-orbit, it follows that there is g 0 Γ1 such that Zg 0 c = 0. A straightforward calculation yields that Z g 0 = Z 41.
6 PETER SIN AND JOHN G. THOMPSON Set T = g Γ1 ge. We check that if g Γ1 and E ge, then one of the following holds: 1. g = ±I and E = ge,. g = ±R and E ge = {ω}, ω = e πi 3. g = ±S and E ge = {i}. This implies that T is a tree, with vertex set 3, VT = {gi g Γ1} {gω g Γ1}, and edge set ET = {ge g Γ1}. In particular, if t 1, t T, then there is a unique path from t 1 to t. It is natural to consider elements g Γ1 such that Z g 41 = Z 41 and then to consider = {z,s H C Z 41 z = ζs}, the motivation being that Z 41 is an avatar of ζ. We consider the directed path P g in T from c to gc. Thus for each zero ρ of ζ, c,ρ. We then use analytic continuation to build a path Q g,ρ in C such that as we traverse P g in H we simultaneously traverseq g,ρ incsuchthatifz,s H Candz, sarecorresponding points, then z,s. An injudicious choice of g will have a point z on P g such that z is a pole of Z 41, and our way is blocked. However, the element A = RSRSR 1 SRSR 1 SRSR 1 SRSR = RSRSR 4 = 1 3 fixes Z 41 and Z 41 has no poles on P A. Let ρ 1, ρ,...be zeros of ζ in the upper half plane, ordered so that ρ m = 1 +iγ m, with 0 < γ 1 < γ <. Using the computer program SAGE MAXIMA, Pari [6], we found that ρ m+1 Q A,ρm for 1 m 300. That is, Ac,ρ m+1, as Q A,ρm starts at ρ m and ends at ρ m+1 for 1 m 300. We do not understand this phenomenon, but it is sufficiently arresting to be noted explicitly.
