arxiv: v1 [hep-ph] 8 Mar 01 Phenomenology of SIDIS unpolarized cross sections and azimuthal asymmetries 1 Vincenzo Barone Di.S.I.., Università del Piemonte Orientale A. Avogadro ; INFN, Gruppo Collegato di Alessandria, 1511 Alessandria, Italy Abstract I review the phenomenology of unpolarized cross sections and azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS). he general theoretical framework is presented and the validity of the Gaussian model is discussed. A brief account of the existing analyses is provided. 1 Introduction It has been known since the early years of quantum chromodynamics that azimuthal asymmetries in unpolarized processes are generated by gluon radiation and splitting. he observation of these asymmetries was in fact proposed as a test of perturbative QCD [1]. he first experimental results date back to the Eighties and showed that unpolarized semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) indeed displays non vanishing azimuthal modulations of the type cosφ h and cosφ h [, 3]. 1 Invited review talk at ransversity 011, Veli Lošinj, Croatia. 1
P h p γ k k k ϕ k P y x z Figure 1: ransverse kinematics in the photon-nucleon collinear frame. While the pqcd processes account for these asimmetries at large transverse momenta, in the low P h region it is the intrinsic transverse motion of quarks that plays a key rôle (for a recent review see [4]). here are two nonperturbative sources of azimuthal asymmetries in unpolarized processes: 1) the Cahn effect [5, 6], a purely kinematic correction due to the quark transverse momentum: ) the Boer-Mulders effect [7], arising from the correlation between the transverse momentum and the transverse spin of quarks inside an unpolarized nucleon. heoretical framework We will consider unpolarized SIDIS, l(l)+n(p) l(l )+h(p h )+X(P X ), in the current fragmentation region. At low P h the cross section of this process factorizes into a transverse-momentum dependent quark distribution (MD) and a fragmentation function [8]. Let us consider the transverse kinematics in a reference frame where the virtual photon and the nucleon are collinear (we call it γ N collinear frame, see fig. 1). he transverse momenta are denoted as follows: k, transverse momentum of the initial quark; p, transverse momentum of the hadron w.r.t. to the fragmenting quark; P h, transverse momentum of the hadron w.r.t. to the γ N axis. Neglecting 1/Q corrections, these momenta are related by p P h z h k. (1) he SIDIS structure functions are actually expressed in terms of the quark transverse momentum k defined in the frame where the produced hadron h and the nucleon are collinear (hn collinear frame). However, if one neglects 1/Q corrections, thetransverse momenta in theγ N andhn collinear frame
coincide: k k. he general expression of the cross section for unpolarized SIDIS is [9, 10] dσ dx B dydz h dφ h dp h + ( y) = πα em x B yq 1 y cosφ h F cosφ h UU he azimuthal asymmetries are defined as: { (1 y + 1 y )F UU, +(1 y)f UU,L +(1 y) cosφ h F cosφ h UU }. () A cosφ dφh h cosφ h dσ = cosφ h =, (3) dφh dσ and similarly for A cosφ h. In the extended parton model, the structure functions appearing in eq. () are given by convolutions of transverse momentum dependent quark distributions and fragmentation functions. Up to order 1/Q one has F UU, = C [f 1 D 1 ], (4) F cosφ h UU,Cahn = M [ Q C ĥ k ] M f 1D 1, (5) F cosφ h UU,BM = M [ Q C (ĥ k )k ] h M h M 1 H 1, (6) [ ] F cosφ h UU,BM = C (ĥ k )(ĥ k ) k k MM h h 1 H 1, (7) where C[wf D] is a transverse momentum convolution. Equation (5) represents the Cahn contribution to the cosφ h structure function. It originates from the elementary lepton-quark cross section in presence of transverse momenta, which reads dˆσ 1 y [( 1 4 k Q ) ( 1 y cosϕ k Q )]+O( ) cosϕ k. (8) 1 y Q Equations (6) and (7) are the Boer-Mulders (BM) contributions to the azimuthal modulations of unpolarized SIDIS. hey couple the Boer-Mulders function h 1 to the Collins function H 1 [11], which describes the fragmentation of transversely polarized quarks into an unpolarized hadron. Notice 3
that the BM effect contributes to cosφ h at order 1/Q (i.e., at twist three) and to cosφ h at leading twist. At twist three one should also take into account quark-gluon interactions, which give rise to the so-called tilde distributions. hus F cosφ h UU gets the additional term [10] F cosφ h UU = M Q C [ ĥ k ĥ k M M h ( ( x hh 1 + M h M f 1 x f D 1 + M h M h 1 H z )] D ) z. (9) We recall however that MD factorization is not proven beyond leading twist, so eq. (9) must be taken with a grain of salt. hecahneffectproducesatorder1/q (twistfour)afurthercontribution to the cosφ h structure function, [ F cosφ h UU,Cahn = M ( Q C ĥ k ) k ] f M 1 D 1. (10) his expression incorporates only part of the 1/Q kinematic corrections. Besides them, there are also dynamical 1/Q corrections arising from twistfour MD s and fragmentation functions. herefore, F cosφ h UU,Cahn is just an approximate estimate of the full O(1/Q ) structure function. In summary, ignoring unknown higher-twist terms, the two azimuthal asymmetries of unpolarized SIDIS are symbolically given by: cosφ h = 1 Q Cahn+ 1 Q BM, cosφ h = BM+ 1 Cahn. (11) Q 3 he Gaussian approach In most phenomenological analyses, the MD s and fragmentation functions are parametrized by Gaussians: f 1 (x,k ) = Af 1(x)e k /k D 1 (z,p ) = BD 1(z)e p /p. (1) Here x is the fraction of the nucleon light-cone momentum carried by the quark, and z is the fraction of the light-cone momentum of the struck quark 4
carried by the final hadron. hese two variables coincide with x B and z h, respectively, modulo 1/Q corrections. We stress that there is a strong assumption with no fundamental basis behind the Gaussian model, namely that distributions factorize in x and k. In principle, one has to distinguish the Gaussian widths k and p from the average squared momenta, defined as k d k k f 1 (x,k ), p d p p D 1 (z,p ). (13) Average values coincide with the Gaussian widths, k = k, p = p, only if we integrate over k and p between 0 and. Bounds on x k /P and k can be obtained in the quark parton model by inserting a set of physical intermediate states in the quark-nucleon amplitudes [1]. Since the momentum of these states is ) ( xm P n µ = k,(1 x)p, k xp, (14) the condition M n 0 yields k x(1 x)m. (15) his is the bound on the truly intrinsic quark transverse momentum [13] (for recent discussions see [14, 15]). Numerically the upper limit (15) isk < 0.5 GeV. Clearly, the average squared momentum k must be smaller than this value. On the other hand, various phenomenological analyses give much larger figures, k GeV. Is there a contradiction between these results? he answer is that the bound(15)actuallyreferstoa static nucleon(q = 0),whereasthevalueof k extracted from experiments effectively accounts for the non-intrinsic transverse momentum, radiatively generated at a given Q. As a consequence, k is not a fixed, universal, quantity. Consider now the unpolarized and angle-independent structure function: F UU = e a d k d p δ (p +z h k P h )f1(x a B,k )D1(z a h,p ) a (16) Using Gaussian parametrizations and integrating between 0 and, one gets F UU = a e a fa 1 (x B)D a 1 (z h) e P h /P h πp h 5 (17)
R (P h ) 1 Gauss model P h (GeV ) Figure : he ratio R(P h ) = dσ UU (P h )/dσ UU (0): Gaussian model vs. CLAS data (from [16]). with P h = p +z h k (18) his is a popular relation appearing in many analyses (where it is often quoted as a relation between average momenta). It must used with some caution. In fact: i) it is invalidated by a possible cutoff on k ; ii) it has (complicated) 1/Q corrections. iii) due to experimental cuts, P h differs from the measured P h. 4 ransverse-momentum dependence of cross sections he Gaussian Ansatz for the unpolarized SIDIS cross section, dσ UU (P h ) dzdp h = dσ UU(0) e P dzdp h /P h, (19) h has been tested by Schweitzer, eckentrup and Metz [16] in the CLAS kinematics (x B = 0.4, z h = 0.34, Q =.4 GeV ) [17]. As shown in fig., the description of data is very good, with a Gaussian width P h = 0.17 GeV. he results of a Gaussian analysis of the P h distributions measured by COMPASS are displayed in fig. 3 (left) [18]. he fitted P h is found to have a mild dependence on x B and to increase with Q. A check of the relation (18) has been also performed, with the result shown in fig. 3 (right). One 6

[19]. hey fitted the EMC data [] with a Gaussian model, obtaining the values k = 0.5 GeV, p = 0.0 GeV, but did not consider the Boer-Mulders term, which is of the same order as the Cahn contribution. he cosφ h asymmetry was extensively studied in [0, 1]. Both the leading-twist Boer-Mulders contribution and the twist-4 Cahn term were included in the analysis. Signs and magnitudes of the Boer-Mulders function, extracted from a fit to HERMES [] and COMPASS [3] preliminary data, were found to be in agreement with the theoretical expectations (based on the impact-parameter approach, lattice studies and large N c arguments): h u 1 f1 u, h d 1 f1 d. In particular, it was pointed out that, since the Cahn effect is the same for π + and π, and the favorite and unfavorite Collins functions are related by H1 fav H1 unf, as shown by the fits to the Collins effect in SIDIS, a signature of the Boer-Mulders effect is cosφ h π > cosφ h π +. Another interesting output of the analysis in [0, 1] is that the Cahn contribution turns out to be relatively large in spite of being O(1/Q ). An example of the fits presented in [1] is shown in fig 5. he HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations have recently presented new preliminary data on azimuthal asymmetries in unpolarized SIDIS [4, 8
5]. While the two measurements are in fairly good agreement for cosφ h, the COMPASS result for the cosφ h asymmetry is systematically larger than the corresponding HERMES result. he CLAS Collaboration at JLab has released final results on the azimuthal modulations [17]. A large discrepancy is found between the data on cosφ h and the Cahn effect predictions (extrapolated from other analyses). he cosφ h signal is non zero only in the small-z h region, where target fragmentation effects are important and may affect the interpretation of data. From the theoretical viewpoint, the situation is quite unclear, as only partial analyses are presently available. If we simply extrapolate them, we find that the Cahn contribution to cosφ h is huge and largely overshoots the data, and that the Boer-Mulders contribution to cosφ h is small and apparently goes in the wrong direction, in the sense that it has an opposite sign in cosφ h and cosφ h, and therefore should produce a cosφ h π smaller than cosφ h π +, whereas the data show a similar π + -π pattern for both asymmetries. We have already said that the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks is kinematically bounded. We expect that the radiatively generated transverse momentum should be limited as well. he effect of an upper bound on k has been recently explored by Boglione, Melis and Prokudin [6]. hey derived a cutoff of the form k η(x B)Q in the γ N center-of-mass frame. he consequence of setting this bound is that the Cahn contribution gets largely suppressed, while the BM contribution remains almost unaffected. his correction goes in the right direction, but further work is needed to establish a frame-independent condition on k. 6 Conclusions here is nothing magic about the Gaussian approach. It is just a parametrization, which happens to work rather well for cross sections at low P h. Since this model lacks a solid basis, one should not be surprised if some simple regularities based on it turn out to fail. he parameters k and p in the Gaussian distributions are likely to be Q (and W ) dependent. his means that they cannot be fixed once forever and used anywhere. One should do as for normal PDF s: take a MD at small Q from some model, evolve it and fit the data. 9
Although we have clear signals of relatively large azimuthal asymmetries, the situation is still unsettled. A combined state-of-the-art fit of cosφ h and cosφ h would be highly desirable in order to understand the origin of these observables. We should be prepared to the possibility that the scheme (11) might not work. We recall that the corrections to this scheme are of three types: 1) genuine (i.e. tilde ) twist-3 contributions (originating from quark-gluon correlations); ) further 1/Q kinematic terms; 3) dynamical twist-4 contributions. A lesson we have learned is that higher twists arerelevant inthe presently explored region of SIDIS. Clearly, it would be important to disentangle them from leading twist contributions. In order to do so, a wider Q range is needed an important task for future experiments. In the meanwhile, the 1/Q contributionsshouldbefullyworkedout, computingboththekinematic corrections and the target mass effects.
