Content Welcome letter Area 3 4-0

NATIONAL SCHOOLS t T R AININ G Welcome to National Schools Training, you have been enrolled onto a vocational qualification within your workplace, as part of the course you need to complete Functional Skills Maths. Functional Skills are the qualification used in adult education, they are an equivalent to a GCSE, a Level qualification is equivalent to a GCSE D-E grade and a Level qualification is equivalent to A-C grade. If you already have a qualification we may be able to use this to exempt you from this qualification so please give the certificate to your Assessor as soon as possible, although you may be exempted you won t be excused, you will then have to either complete the next level (unless your qualification exempts you from this as well), however if fully exempted we need to ensure we maintain your current level during your time with us, so your assessor will still be setting your tasks to complete. When you first started with us you completed an assessment on the BKSB system, we need you to complete the diagnostic on this system too as this will help us to identify the exact support you need as well as unlocking individualised learning resources, please log in using the user name and password you were sent when you did your initial assessment (if you have forgotten it please ask your Assessor) Here s the weblink to speed things up; Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%f We aim to complete your Functional Skills in the First 6 months of your qualification so please speak to your Assessor about exams (you can take these sooner if you are ready), the functional skills team run weekly E-Learning sessions so please speak to your Assessor on how to book onto these (and don t worry if you ve missed a few they are all on out YouTube Channel Wishing you the very best of luck in your studies Functional Skills Team 3

Area The area of a D shape is the amount of surface it covers. The units for area are: mm (square millimetre) cm (square centimetres) m (square metre) km (square kilometre) Example Area = 4 Area = 4cm (4 square centimetres) The area of a rectangle can be found by multiplying the length by the breadth. Area = length x breadth 4

Example Area = length x breadth Area = 6cm x 3 cm Area 8cm Now try this questions The wall of a room is to be painted. However there is a door and a window in the wall. The painter needs to estimate how much paint she will need to paint the wall while leaving out the door and window. To do this she has to calculate the area of the part to be painted. A sketch indicating the measurements of the wall is shown. The door measures.9m by 0.9m. The window measures.3m by.8m. What is the area that is to be painted? Area of a triangle The area of a triangle is found by multiplying by the base by the height. 5

Example Area = x base x height Area = x 0 x 6 Area = 30cm Now try this questions: Work out the area of this triangle using Area = x base x height Area of a rhombus The area of a rhombus is found by splitting it into two triangles. Area of top triangle = x 8.4 x 3 =.6cm Area of top rhombus = x.6 = 5.cm Area of a kite The area of a kite is found in the same way as a rhombus, that is by splitting it into two triangles. Area of triangle = x 8 x. = 4.4cm Are of kite = x 4.4 = 8.8cm 6

Area of a circle For any circle with radius, r, the area, A, is found using the formula A = r. For this circle: A = r = x 3 x 3 = 8.7cm Area of a semicircle A semicircle is half of a circle. The area is half the area of a circle. For this semicircle: A = r = x x 4 x 4 = 5.3 cm Area of a combined shape This shape is made up of a rectangle and a semicircle. To find the total area, find the area of each part and add them together. Area of the rectangle: = lenght x breadth = 0 x 30 = 600mm Area of circle = r = x 0 x 0 = 34cm Area of semicircle = x 34 = 57cm Total area = = 757mm 7

Skills Check:. Calculate the perimeter of the shape.. Calculate the perimeter of this rectangle. 3. Calculate the perimeter of the rectangle. 4. Calculate the area of the rectangle. 5. Calculate the area of this rhombus. 8

6. Calculate the perimeter of this kite. 7. Calculate the area of this triangle. 8. Calculate the area of this triangle. 9. Calculate the circumference of this circle. (Answer given is rounded to decimal place). 9

0. Calculate the area of this circle. (Answer given is rounded to decimal place). 0
