A Shot Combinatoial Poof of Deangement Identity axiv: v1 [math.co] 13 Nov 2017 Ivica Matinjak Faculty of Science, Univesity of Zageb Bijenička cesta 32, HR Zageb, Coatia and Dajana Stanić Depatment of Mathematics, Univesity of Osijek Tg Ljudevita Gaja 6, HR Osijek, Coatia Abstact The n-th encontes numbe with the paamete is the numbe of pemutations having exactly fixed points. In paticula, a deangement is a pemutation without any fixed point. We pesents a shot combinatoial poof fo a weighted sum deangement identities. Keywods: deangements, encontes numbes, ecuence elation, factoial, binomial coefficient AMS Mathematical Subject Classifications: 05A05, 05A10 1 Intoduction Having a pemutation σ S n, σ : [n] [n] whee [n] := {1,2,...,n}, it is said that k [n] is a fixed point if it is mapped to itself, σ(k) = k. Pemutations without fixed points ae of paticula inteest and ae usually called deangements. We let D n denote the numbe of deangements of the set [n], D n = S (0) n, S (0) n := {σ S n : σ(k) k,k = 1,...,n}. Deangements ae usually intoduced in the context of inclusion-exclusion pinciple [1, 6, 10], since this pinciple is used to povide an intepetation of D n as a subfactoial, D n = ( 1) k. (1) k! The numbes D 0,D 1,D 2,...,D n,... fom ecusive sequence (D n ) n 0 defined by the ecuence fomulae D n = (n 1)(D n 1 +D n 2 ) (2) and initial tems D 0 = 1,D 1 = 0. Thee is a counting agument to pove this. Let the numbe k be mapped by σ to the numbe j, j = 1,...,k 1,k+1,...,n. Note
that thee ae(n 1) such pemutations σ. Now, we sepaate the set of pemutations σ into two disjoint sets A and B, such that This means that A := {σ S n (0) : σ(j) k,σ(k) = j} B := {σ S n (0) : σ(j) = k,σ(k) = j}. D n = (n 1)( A + B ). The set A counts D n 1 elements while the set B counts D n 2 elements. The fact that the numbe k in this easoning is chosen without losing geneality, completes the poof of (2). By a simple algebaic manipulation with (2) we obtain anothe ecuence fo the sequence (D n ) n 0, Namely, it holds tue D n = nd n 1 +( 1) n. (3) nd n 2 D n 1 D n 2 = nd n 3 +D n 2 +2D n 3 = = ( 1) n and this immediately gives the above ecuence fom (2). When we iteatively apply ecuence (3) to the deangement numbe on the.h.s. of this elation we get nd n 1 +( 1) n = n [ (n 1)D n 2 +( 1) n 1] +( 1) n which finally esults with n(n 1)(n 2) 3( 1) 2 +n(n 1)(n 2) 4( 1) 3 + +( 1) n. (4) on the.h.s. of (3), which completes the poof of (1). A few identities fo the sequence (D n ) n 0 ae known [2, 5, 8]. In [2] Deutsche and Elizalde give a nice identity D n = ( ) n (k 1) D n k. (5) k Recently, Bhatnaga pesents families of identities fo some sequences including the shifted deangement numbes [3], deiving it using an Eule s identity [4]. In what follows we demonstate a combinatoial poof fo that deangement identitiy, with weighted sum. 2
2 A pai of weighted sums fo deangements We define the encontes numbe D n () as the numbe of pemutations σ S n having exactly fixed points. Thus, D n (0) = D n. Fo a given N, we define the sequence D 0 (),D 1 (),...,D n (),..., denoted (D n ()) n. Applying an analogue counting agument that we used when poving elation (2), one can epesents encontes numbes by the deangement numbes, ( ) n D n () = D n. (6) On the othe hand, elation (6) follows immediately fom the fact that fixed points hee ae -combinations ove the set of n elements. A few othe notable popeties of the encontes numbes is also known. The diffeence between numbes in the sequences (D n ) n 0 and (D n (1)) n 1 altenate fo the value 1, which follows fom (3). Accoding to the definition of encontes numbes, the sum of the n-th ow in the aay of numbes (D n ()) n is equal to, = D n (k). (7) Moeove, identity (6) shows that D n can be intepeted as a weighted sum of encontes numbes in the n-th ow of the aay, by means of elation (5), D n = (k 1)D n (k). (8) The numbe D n /(n 1) is also a weighted sum of pevious consecutive deangement numbes. Fo example, 24+12D 2 +4D 3 +D 4 = D 6 5. In geneal we have as follows fom Theoem 1. + k! D k = D n+2 n+1, (9) Theoem 1. Fo n N and the sequence of deangement numbes (D n ) n 0 we have D k k! = D n+2 (n+1)!. (10) Poof. Within a deangement σ, the numbe k, k = 1,...,n can be mapped to any j, j = 1,...,k 1,k + 1,...,n. We let A n denote the set of deangements with σ(k) = j, whee j k, A n := {σ S n (0) : σ(k) = j}. 3
Obviously, cadinality of the set A n is invaiant to the choice of j, j k. Moe pecisely, A n = D n n 1. Futhemoe, we sepaate the set A n into two disjoint sets of deangements, sets B n and C n, B n := {σ A n : σ(j) = k} C n := {σ A n : σ(j) k}. Obviously, the set B n counts D n 2 elements. Fo deangements in C n thee ae now (n 2) equivalent ways to map j (excluding j and k), as Figue 1 illustates. Thus, we have C n = (n 2) A n 1, which gives the ecuence elation A n = D n 2 +(n 2) A n 1. (11) Afte epeating usage of (11) we get identity (9) which completes the poof. 1,2,...,k,...,j,...,n C n : 1,2,...,k,...,j,...,n Figue 1: In case of deangements in the set C n thee ae (n 2) equivalent ways to map j. In ode to pove Theoem 1 algebaically, we apply ecuence (2) to get D n+2 (n+1)! = (n+1)(d n+1 +D n ) (n+1)! = n(d n +D n 1 ) = D 1 1! + D n + + D n = D n+1 + D n = D n (n 1)! + D n 1 (n 1)! + D n D k = k!. Theoem 2. Fo n N and the sequence of deangement numbes (D n ) n 0 we have ( 1) k D k+3 k +2 = ( 1) n D n+2. (12) 4
Poof. By applying ecuence (2) we have ( 1) k D k+3 = 2(D 2 +D 1 ) 3(D 3 +D 2 ) k ( 1) n(n+2)(d n+2 +D n+1 ) n+2 = (D 2 +D 1 ) (D 3 +D 2 )+ ( 1) n (D n+2 +D n+1 ) = ( 1) n D n+2 which completes the poof. Once having Theoem 1, substitution of (6) in identity (10) gives the genealization (13). D k+ () k! ( k+) = D n++2() (n+1)! ( n++2). (13) The identity (14) follows by substitution of (6) in (12), ( 1) k D k++3 () (k +2) ( ) = ( 1)n D n++2 () ( k++3 n++2 ). (14) Note that the tems in identity (14) ae always integes, which can be seen as a consequence of ecuence elation (2). Refeences [1] M. Bona, A Walk Though Combinatoics, Wold Scientific, [2] E.
