1 MATHEMATICS OF COMPUTATION Volum 00, Numbr 0, Pags S (XX) arxiv: v1 [math.na] 3 Mar 2016 RESIDUAL-BASED A POSTERIORI ERROR ESTIMATE FOR INTERFACE PROBLEMS: NONCONFORMING LINEAR ELEMENTS ZHIQIANG CAI, CUIYU HE, AND SHUN ZHANG Abstract. In this papr, w study a modifid rsidual-basd a postriori rror stimator for th nonconforming linar finit lmnt approximation to th intrfac problm. Th rliability of th stimator is analyzd by a nw and dirct approach without using th Hlmholtz dcomposition. It is provd that th stimator is rliabl with constant indpndnt of th jump of diffusion cofficints across th intrfacs, without th assumption that th diffusion cofficint is quasi-monoton. Numrical rsults for on tst problm with intrscting intrfacs ar also prsntd. 1. Introduction During th past dcad, th construction, analysis, and implmntation of robust a postriori rror stimators for various finit lmnt approximations to partial diffrntial quations with paramtrs hav bn on of th focuss of rsarch in th fild of th a postriori rror stimation. For th lliptic intrfac problm, various robust stimators hav bn constructd, analyzd, and implmntd (s,.g., [4, 23, 22, 8, 9, 11, 26, 12] for conforminglmnts, [1, 20, 10] for nonconforminglmnts, [10] for mixd lmnts, and [7] for discontinuous lmnts). Th robustnss for rsidual basd stimators in th rliability bound is stablishd thortically undr th assumption of th quasi-monoton distribution of th diffusion cofficints, s [4] for mor dtails. Howvr, numrical rsults by many rsarchrs including ours strongly suggst that thos stimators ar robust vn whn th diffusion cofficints ar not quasi-monoton. In this papr, w provid a thortical vidnc for th nonconforming linar lmnt without th quasi-monoton assumption. On of th ky stps in obtaining th robust rliability bound of classical rsidual basd stimator is to construct a modifid Clémnt-typ intrpolation oprator satisfying spcific approximation and stability proprtis in th nrgy norm (s [4] for dtails). For th conforming linar lmnt, th dgrs of frdom ar th nodal valus at vrtics of triangls. Th nodal valu of th modifid Clémnttyp intrpolation is dfind by th avrag valu of th function ovr connctd lmnts whos corrsponding diffusion cofficints ar th gratst. Undr th quasi-monoton assumption, Brnardi and Vrfürth [4] wr abl to stablish th rquird proprtis of th intrpolation oprator to guarant th robust rliability 2010 Mathmatics Subjct Classification. 2 2 ZHIQIANG CAI, CUIYU HE, AND SHUN ZHANG bound. A ky advantag for th nonconforming linar lmnt is that its dgrs of frdom ar nodal valus at th middl points of dgs of triangls and that ach middl point is shard by at most two triangls. Hnc, w ar abl to construct a modifid Clémnt-typ intrpolation satisfying th dsird proprtis without th quasi-monotonicity assumption (s Sction 4). Th a postriori rror stimation for th nonconforming lmnts has bn studid by many rsarchrs. Du to th lack of th rrorquation, Dari, Duran, Padra, and Vampa [14] stablishd th rliability bound of th rsidual-basd rror stimator for th Poisson quation through th Hlmholtz dcomposition of th tru rror. Thir analysis is widly usd by othr rsarchrs (s,.g., [13, 5, 1, 6]), and th Hlmholtz dcomposition bcoms a ncssary tool for obtaining th rliability bound for th nonconforming lmnts. This approach has also bn applid to th mixd finit lmnt mthod [21] and discontinuous Garlrkin finit lmnt mthod [3, 2, 7]. It is obvious that application of thir analysis to th intrfac problm will lad to th sam distribution assumption as th conforming lmnts in [4]. Ainsworth [1] constructd an quilibratd stimator without using th Clémnt typ intrpolation but th rror bounds dpnd on th jump of diffusion constants. Dspit th main trnd of using Hlmholtz dcomposition in th nonconforming finit lmnt analysis, thr ar svral othr intrsting paprs that approachd diffrntly. Hopp and Wohlmuth [18] constructd two a postriori rror stimators by using th hirarchical basis undr th saturation assumption. Schiwck [24] constructd a two-sidd bound of th nrgy rror using th analysis of conforming cas with som simpl additional argumnts. Nvrthlss, conforming Clémnt typ intrpolation was applid in that papr hnc again impos th assumption of quasi-monotonicity. Th purpos of this papr is to prsnt a nw and dirct analysis, which dos not involv th Hlmholtz dcomposition, for stimating th rliability bound with th aim of rmoving th quasi-monoton assumption. To do so, our analysis maks us of (a) our nwly dvlopd rror quation for th nonconforming finit lmnt approximation in [7] and (b) th structur of th nonconforming lmnts. Combining with our obsrvation on th modifid Clémnt-typ intrpolation for th nonconforming lmnts, w ar abl to bound both th lmnt rsiduals and th numrical flux jumps uniformly without th quasi-monotonicity assumption. Unfortunatly, w ar unabl to do th sam for th numrical dg solution jump. As an altrnativ, w modify th dg solution jump at lmnts whr th quasimonotonicity assumption is not satisfid. Th modifid stimator is provd to b rliabl with constant indpndnt of th jump of th diffusion cofficints across intrfacs without th quasi-monotonicity assumption. By using th standard argumnt (s,.g., [4]), w also stablish local fficincy bounds uniformly with rspct to th jump of th diffusion cofficint. This robustnss is obtaind for th standard (modifid) indicators without (with) th quasi-monotonicity assumption. Nvrthlss, numrical rsults prsntd in Sction 7 for a bnchmark tst problm sms to suggst that th modifid indicator gnrats a bttr msh than th standard indicator. Existing rsidual basd stimators consist of th lmnt rsidual, th dg flux jump, and th dg tangntial drivativ jump du to th Hlmholtz dcomposition. As a by-product of our dirct approach (s (2.9)), th rsidual basd stimators

Evn though thy ar quivalnt in two dimnsions, numrical rsult shows that our stimator is mor accurat than th xisting stimators (s Figur 6). Th outlin of th papr is as follows. Th intrfac problm and its nonconforming finit lmnt approximation ar introducd in Sction 2 as wll as th L 2 rprsntation of th tru rror in th (brokn) nrgy norm. Th standard and modifid indicators and stimators ar prsntd in Sction 3. Th modifid Clémnt-typ intrpolation oprator is dfind and its approximation proprtis ar provd in Sction 4. Robust local fficincy and global rliability bounds ar stablishd in Sctions 5 and 6, rspctivly. Finally, w provid som numrical rsults in Sction Nonconforming Linar Finit Elmnt Approximation to Intrfac Problm 2.1. Intrfac Problm. For simplicity of th prsntation, w considr only two dimnsions. 7 RESIDUAL-BASED A POSTERIORI ESTIMATE FOR NONCONFORMING ELEMENTS 7 3. Indicator and Estimator In this sction, basd on th L 2 rprsntation of th tru rror in th nrgy norm in Lmma 2.1, w first introduc th standard indicator and th corrsponding stimator. Our standard stimator consists of th usual lmnt rsidual and dg flux jump plus th dg solution jump that rplacs th dg tangntial drivativ jump of xisting rsidual basd stimators. Sinc th robustnss of th rliability bound of stimators was stablishd undr th quasi-monotonicity assumption on th distribution of th diffusion cofficint, to avoid such an assumption w introduc a nw indicator and th corrsponding stimator by modifying th dg solution jump at lmnts whr th quasi-monotonicity assumption fails. For any T h, dnot by N h and Eh, rspctivly, th sts of thr vrtics and thr dgs of. Dnot th rspctiv indicators of lmnt rsidual, dg flux jump, and dg solution jump by η 2 R f, = h2 α r 2 0,, η 2 J σ, = E h Eh I and η 2 J u, = E h Eh I h 2α + j σ, 2 0, + E h Eh N α j u, 2 0, + 2h E h Eh D h α j σ, 2 0,, α h j u, 2 0,. Thn th standard indicator associatd with T h is dfind by ( 1/2, (3.1) η = ηr 2 f, +η2 J σ, +η2 J u,) and th standard stimator by (3.2) η = T h η 2 Rmark 3.1. Instad of using th dg tangntial drivativ jump as xisting rsidualbasdrrorstimators, th indicatorη and th rsulting stimatorη abovmploy th dg solution jump η Ju,. In two dimnsions, th dg solution jump is quivalnt to th tangntial drivativ jump (s (5.4)). Nvrthlss, numrical rsults for a tst problm show that our stimator is mor accurat than th xisting stimators using th dg tangntial drivativ jump. By th standard argumnt [4], it is shown in Sction 5 that th indicator η is fficint uniformly with rspct to th jump of th diffusion cofficint. By using th Hlmholtz dcomposition and th modifid Clémnt-typ intrpolation, on can also prov that th stimator η is rliabl. Morovr, th rliability constant is indpndnt of th jump of α(x) providd that th distribution of α(x) is quasimonoton [23]. In ordr to rmov this assumption, w prsnt a nw analysis for stimating th rliability bound without using th Hlmholtz dcomposition. Th analysis will mak us of th structur of th nonconforming lmnt in twodimnsions, and it nabls us to bound both th lmnt rsidual and th numrical flux jump uniformly without th quasi-monotonicity. Unfortunatly, w ar unabl to do th sam for th numrical solution jump. As an altrnativ, w modify th 1/2.

For ach lmnt T h, subdivid it into four sub-triangls by conncting thr mid-points of dgs of, and dnot by T h/2 th rfind triangulation. Lt N h/2 b th sts of all vrtics basd on T h/2. Local Efficincy Bound In this sction, w stablish local fficincy bounds for th indicators η and η dfind, rspctivly, in (3.1) and (3.3). Both th bounds ar indpndnt of th jump of th diffusion cofficint, this robustnss is obtaind without (with) th quasi-monotonicity assumption (s [4]) for th indicator η ( η ). Nvrthlss, numrical rsults prsntd in Sction 7 for a bnchmark tst problm sms to suggst that th modifid indicator η gnrats a bttr msh than th standard indicator η. By using local dg and lmnt bubbl functions, ψ and ψ (s [25] for thir dfinitions and proprtis), it is a common practic to obtain th local fficincy bound for th rsidual-basd a postriori rror stimator. By proprly wighting trms in th indicator by th diffusion cofficint, on can show that th local fficincy bound is robust without th quasi-monotonicity assumption.
