12 Feedback Versus Feedforward Predcton An mportant aspect of DPCM s that the predcton s based on the output the quantzed samples rather than the nput the unquantzed samples. Ths results n the predctor beng n the feedback loop around the quantzer, so that the quantzer error at a gven step s fed back to the quantzer nput at the next step. Ths has a stablng effect that prevents DC drft and accumulaton of error n the reconstructed sgnal u ~ n. Informaton Theory

19 DPCM Desgn There are two components to desgn n a DPCM system :. The predctor. The quantzer Ideally, the predctor and quantzer would be optmzed together usng a lnear or Nonlnear technque. Transform Doman Codng Technques Transform Codng : (Block Quantzaton) A block of data s untarly transformed so that a large fracton of ts total energy s packed n relatvely few transform coeffcents, whch are quantzed ndependently. The optmum transform coder s defned as the one that mnmzes the mean square dstorton of the reproduced data for a gven number of total bts. the Karhunen-Loeve Transform (KLT) The functon of the transformaton s to make the orgnal samples so that the subsequent operaton of quantzaton may be done more effcently.
