2 ENGLISH VERSION Question 1 (25 Marks) CO Marks 1 25 Water at 5 MPa and 40 o C is heated at constant pressure until its temperature reached 350 o C. After that, the system is cooled at constant volume until the temperature becomes 300 o C. Answer the followings. a. Clearly draw this process on a PT and a PV diagrams. (6 marks) From thermodynamic property table, find: b. The initial enthalpy of the water in kj/kg. (3 marks) c. The boiling point temperature ( o C ) of water at 5 MPa? (3 marks) d. The specific volume (m 3 /kg) of water at 5 MPa and 350 o C. (3 marks) e. The final pressure (MPa). (3marks) f. Calculate the final pressure (MPa) using the ideal gas equation. (4 marks) g. Compare and discuss the answers between e. and f. (3 marks) 1
3 Question 2 (25 Marks) CO Marks Figure 1 shows that Refrigerant-134a at 30 C and 1 MPa with a flow rate of 2.5 kg/s is pass through a heat exchanger at a velocity of 40 m/s where the output temperature is raise to 70 C. It then enters a turbine with the same velocity of 40 m/s at 1 MPa and expands till the temperature falls to 40 C. On leaving the turbine, the Refrigerant-134a with a quality of 0.3 and velocity of 55 m/s is send to a nozzle where it expands until the temperature and pressure has fallen to 38 C and 1 MPa. By using 1 st Law of Thermodynamics (Energy Balance); a. Calculate rate of heat transfer in kw to the Refrigerant-134a in the heat exchanger (6 marks) b. Calculate the power output in kw from the turbine assuming no heat loss. (6 marks) c. Explain briefly the significance of velocity difference in calculating power output from the turbine in b. (2 marks) d. Determine the turbine outlet pressure (1 mark) e. Calculate the inlet and outlet area of the turbine in m 2 (4 marks) f. 4 Question 3 (25 Marks) CO Marks 3 25 A heat engine is assumed to operate on a Carnot cycle. It receives heat from a high temperature reservoir at 660 o C and rejects 200 kj heat to a low temperature reservoir at 25 o C. a. Calculate the thermal efficiency of the cycle. (4 marks) b. Name one component of the cycle that is operating as an isentropic process. (3 marks) c. Determine the amount of heat it receives from the high temperature reservoir (kj). (4 marks) d. Calculate the work net for this heat engine (kj). (4 marks) e. Show that the Clausius Inequality ( ) is satisfied for a reversible Carnot cycle. (6 marks) f. How much is entropy generation (S gen ) for this cycle? Explain your answer. (4 marks) 3
5 Question 4 (25 Marks) CO Mark 4 25 A steam power plant operates on a simple ideal Rankine cycle and has a net power output of 40 MW. Steam enters the turbine at 7 MPa and 500 o C and is cooled in the condenser at a pressure of 10 kpa by running cooling water from a large pond through the tubes of the condenser at a rate of 1800 kg/s. a. Show the ideal Rankine cycle on a T-s diagram. (2 marks) b. Calculate the thermal efficiency of the ideal Rankine cycle. (10 marks) c. Calculate the mass flow rate of the steam in kg/s. (3 marks) d. Calculate the temperature rise of the cooling water. (3 marks) e. The above power plant now operates on a non-ideal Rankine cycle and the isentropic efficiency of the turbine and pump is 85 percent. All other parameters are the same. Calculate the new thermal efficiency of the cycle and determine the drop of the thermal efficiency from the original cycle (question b). (5 marks) f. Show the above non-ideal Rankine cycle on a T-s diagram. (2 marks) 4
6 VERSI BAHASA MELAYU Soalan 1 (25 Markah) Air pada 5 MPa dan 40 o C dipanaskan pada tekanan tetap sehingga suhunya mencapai 350 o C. Selepas itu sistem disejukkan pada isipadu tetap sehingga suhu mencapai 300 o C. Jawab soalan-soalan berikut: a. Lakarkan dengan jelas proses ini di atas rajah PT and a PV. (6 markah) Dari jadual properti termodinamik, dapatkan: b. Entalpi air pada keadaan awal dalam kj/kg (3 markah) c. Suhu didih air ( o C ) pada 5 MPa? (3 markah) d. Isipadu spesifik (m 3 /kg) air pada 5 MPa dan 350 o C. (3 markah) e. Tekanan akhir (MPa). (3 markah) f. Kira tekanan akhir (MPa) dengan menggunakan persamaan gas unggul. (4 markah) g. 7 Soalan 2 ( 25 markah) Rajah 1 menunjukkan Refrigerant-134a pada suhu 30 C dan 1 MPa dengan kadar aliran 2.5 kg/s melalui penukar haba pada kelajuan 40m/s di mana suhu keluar dinaikkan kepada 70 C. Ia kemudian memasuki turbin dengan halaju 40m/s at 1 MPa dan mengembang sehingga suhu jatuh kepada 40 C. Selepas meninggalkan turbin, Refrigerant-134a pada kualiti 0.3 dan kelajuan 55 m/s memasuki nozzle di mana ia mengembang sehingga suhu dan tekanan jatuh kepada 38 C dan 1 MPa. Dengan mengunakan Hukum Pertama Termodinamik (Keseimbangan Tenaga); a. Kira kadar pemindahan haba dalam kw kepada Refrigerant-134a dalam penukar haba. (6 markah) b. Kira kuasa keluaran dalam kw dari turbin dengan andaian tiada haba yang hilang. (6 markah) c. Terangkan dengan ringkas kepentingan perbezaan halaju dalam pengiraan kuasa keluaran dari turbin di b. Ia mendapat haba dari takungan suhu tinggi pada 660 o C dan menyingkirkan 200 kj haba ke takungan suhu rendah pada 25 o C. a. Kira kecekapan termal kitaran ini. (4 markah) b. Namakan satu komponen dalam kitaran ini yang beroperasi secara isentropik. (3 markah) c. Tentukan jumlah haba yang diterima dari takungan suhu tinggi (kj). (4 markah) d. 9 Soalan 4 (25 Markah) Sebuah loji kuasa stim beroperasi dengan kitaran Rankine mudah unggul dan menjanakan kuasa sebanyak 40MW. Stim masuk ke dalam turbin pada 7 MPa dan 500 o C dan disejukkan di dalam kondenser pada tekanan 10 kpa oleh air sejuk dari sebuah kolam besar melalui tiub kondenser pada kadar alir 1800 kg/s. a. Tunjukkan kitaran Rankine unggul dalam rajah T-s. (2 markah) b. Kira kecekapan terma kitaran Rankine unggul itu. (10 markah) c. Kira kadar alir stim dalam kg/s. (3 markah) d. Kira kenaikan suhu air sejuk. (3 markah) e. Loji di atas sekarang beroperasi dengan kitaran Rankine tak unggul dan kecekapan entropi pump dan turbin ialah 85 peratus. Semua parameter lain adalah sama. Kira kecekapan terma kitaran yang baru dan dapatkan kejatuhan kecekapan terma kitaran dari kitaran yang asal (soalan b). (5 markah) f.
