1 Lesson 095 The Kingdom Is Divided 1 Kings 11:26-40; 12:1-24

2 MEMORY VERSE 1 KIN GS 12:15 For the turn of affairs w as from the LORD, that He m ight fulfill His w ord. WHAT YOU WILL NEED: A small stuffed animal and a blindfold. As many Obedience Game templates as the number of children in your class, construction paper, contact paper and buttons. ATTENTION GRABBER! Decisions, Decisions! In today s lesson we will be learning about listening to good advice and bad advice and what happens when we listen to bad advice. We have to make choices and decisions all of the time. Our friends may not always give us good advice. We need to learn how to listen to the Lord. Read off the following questions to your class and ask for answers from the students. 1. Bobby saved some money to buy a really special video game. But Jimmy asked Bobby to borrow some money so he could buy something he really wanted. Bobby thought about lying and saying that he spent the money already on something else. What do you think is the right thing for Bobby to do? 2. Ashley never really liked math very much so she asked her best friend Kathy if she would sit next to her during the big test and let her see her answers. What do you think is the right thing for Kathy to do?

3 3. Billy and Josh were really good friends. One day they were playing during recess at school. A group of boys came up to them and asked Josh to play with them, but made fun of Billy and said they didn t want him to play. What do you think is the right thing for Josh to do? 4. Sabrina moved into a new house and met some new girls on the street. They said they would be her friend if she went and stole some candy for them. What do you think is the right thing for Sabrina to do? After the children have given you answers go back over each question and change the last phrase to What would Jesus do? Emphasize that it doesn t matter what we think or what our friends think, what matters is what Jesus thinks about a situation. LESSON TIME! When Solomon became King of Israel, he led the people in the ways of God. He was a very good king. The Lord blessed him and Israel very much. God told them that if they would obey Him and follow all of His commandments and instructions that He would dwell with them and would bless them. And God did just that. He greatly blessed Solomon and the nation of Israel. Faith and obedience brought blessing. As the years passed, Solomon forgot his promises to God. As we have seen in past lessons he let friends and family around him influence him to sin and to worship false gods and idols. He especially allowed all of the wives that he married from foreign countries to convince him to worship their false gods instead of the one and only true God. Solomon left the Lord and began to worship other gods. The people of his kingdom followed him into the same sin and they began to lose God s blessings because they turned away from God.

4 We will learn about the result of his disobedience in our lesson today. We are going to see that a large portion of Israel will break away to make their own country. Brother will turn against brother and family against family. The people of Israel will begin to fight against one another! None of this ever had to happen if only the king and the people would have remained faithful to the Lord. Sin always destroys our relationship with God and with other people that we care about. When we disobey God we will be disciplined. 1 KI N G S 11:26-28 T h e n S o l o m o n ' s s e r v an t, J e r o bo am t h e s o n o f N e bat, an Ep h r ai m i t e f r o m Z e r e d a, w h o s e m o t h e r ' s n am e w as Z e r u ah, a w i d o w, al s o r e be l l e d agai n s t t h e k i n g. Jeroboam was a son of one of Solomon s officials. Solomon was impressed with Jeroboam and the way he did his work and placed him in charge of the labor force of the house of Joseph. Jeroboam was given a position of responsibility within the kingdom. We are given some insight into Jeoboam s character in these verses. Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor. He had a good reputation and was a good warrior. He was strong and may have even served in the military. We also see that he was industrious. This means

5 that he was a hard worker. He enjoyed to work and Solomon took notice of his hard work. By all accounts, Jeroboam was a good man. We don t see anything about him desiring to rebel or go against Solomon. Let s find out what made a man like Jeroboam rebel against King Solomon. Today s story is about the time that he rebelled against King Solomon. 1 KI N G S 11:29-32 N o w i t h ap p e n e d at t h at t i m e, w h e n J e r o bo am w e n t o u t o f J e r u s al e m, t h at t h e p r o p h e t Ah i j ah t h e S h i l o n i t e m e t h i m o n t h e w ay ; an d h e h ad c l o t h e d h i m s e l f w i t h a n e w gar m e n t, an d t h e t w o w e r e al o n e i n t h e f i e l d. Ahijah took off his new coat and tore it into 12 pieces to signify the 12 tribes of Israel. (Note to teacher: You could bring an old piece of cloth and tear it into 12 pieces as a visual example for the children of what took place). He said that God was going to divide Solomon s vast kingdom. God would give

6 Jeroboam 10 tribes to rule as king. Solomon s son would rule over only 1 tribe and his family to honor David and to keep the promise God gave to David to continue his family. So the first thing we need to understand about Jeroboam rebelling against Solomon is that it was all part of God s plan. Because of Solomon s sin, the kingdom was going to be torn from him. God had told that to Solomon in our last lesson. It is sad what happens when we sin. God wants to bless us so much, but when we disobey he has to discipline us. But he does this because he loves us and wants us to learn from our mistakes. But the saddest part for Solomon and the kingdom of Israel is that none of this had to happen if only Solomon and the people had remained faithful to the Lord. Because of Solomon s sin, his son would end up losing most of the kingdom. When we disobey God we will be disciplined. 1 KI N G S 11:33 ' be c au s e t h e y h av e f o r s ak e n M e, an d w o r s h i p e d As h t o r e t h t h e go d d e s s o f t h e S i d o n i an s, C h e m o s h t h e go d o f t h e M o abi t e s, an d M i l c o m t h e go d o f t h e p e o p l e o f Am m o n, an d h av e n o t w al k e d i n M y w ay s t o d o w h at i s r i gh t i n M y e y e s an d k e e p M y s t at u t e s an d M y j u d gm e n t s, as d i d h i s f at h e r D av i d. We see in this verse the reason God was taking away Solomon s kingdom: Solomon and the people of his kingdom were worshipping false gods of the surrounding nations. They were not obeying and following God s ways like they had promised to do. When we disobey God we will be disciplined.

7 If someone as wise as King Solomon could end up turning away from the Lord how much more should we be on guard that we never turn away! The false gods began to get in the way of Solomon s relationship with the Lord. It didn t happen overnight, but slowly over a period of time. We need to be careful not to let the things of this world creep into our lives and take our focus off of Jesus. We need to keep our eyes on the Lord and on His ways and as He has promised, He will bless us. But if we go after the things of this world, then we will be disciplined. 1 KI N G S 11:34-36 ' H o w e v e r I w i l l n o t t ak e t h e w h o l e k i n gd o m o u t o f h i s h an d, be c au s e I h av e m ad e h i m r u l e r al l t h e d ay s o f h i s l i f e f o r t h e s ak e o f M y s e r v an t D av i d, w h o m I c h o s e be c au s e h e k e p t M y c o m m an d m e n t s an d M y s t at u t e s. Since God had promised Solomon that he would rule during his lifetime because of his father David s obedience, he stated he would take away the kingdom from Solomon s son. He would leave a small part because of David and because of the city of Jerusalem which carries His name. God is always faithful to His promises. He promised David that the Messiah (Jesus) would be one of his descendants. So he would not allow David s descendants to be completely cut off. He also

8 promised Solomon that he would be able to rule over the entire kingdom all of his life. This was because of David s faithfulness and obedience. Unfortunately, even at this late time we don t see that Solomon repented or turned from his ways. He could have and everything may have been reversed. But his sin had blinded him too much. 1 KI N G S 11:37-39 ' S o I w i l l t ak e y o u, an d y o u s h al l r e i gn o v e r al l y o u r h e ar t d e s i r e s, an d y o u s h al l be k i n g o v e r I s r ae l. ' An d I w i l l af f l i c t t h e d e s c e n d an t s o f D av i d be c au s e o f t h i s, bu t n o t f o r e v e r. ' " God tells Jeroboam that he will become king over Israel. God makes a promise that if Jeroboam will obey God and follow Him like David did that he will be with him and will make him a great and lasting king. David s descendants will be humbled because of their sin but not forever. When we disobey God we will be disciplined. Jeroboam is given the same promise that we are all given. Faith and obedience produces blessings. God doesn t force us to serve Him, but we want to serve Him because of what He has already done for us. Let s decide today that we will always serve the Lord no matter what.

When Solomon heard about this, he tried to kill Jeroboam but Jeroboam fled to Egypt for protection. Solomon could have seen what was happening and how that God was judging his sin. But instead he hardened his heart. He didn t turn from his ways. Solomon thought that the answer was to kill Jereboam. But that wasn t the answer at all. When we disobey God we will be disciplined. 1 KI N G S 12:1-2 An d R e h o bo am w e n t t o S h e c h e m, f o r al l I s r ae l h ad go n e t o S h e c h e m t o m ak e h i m k i n g. 10 After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam went to Shechem for the Israelites to crown him as their king. Jeroboam heard about Solomon dying so he returned home from Egypt. At this time the kingdom was still one. 1 KI N G S 12:3-5 t h at t h e y s e n t an d c al l e d h i m. It is interesting here that Jeroboam here doesn t try to take the kingdom from Rehoboam. The people recognized him as a leader and probably could have begun a rebellion because of how hard King Solomon had made everyone s life. It would seem that King Solomon had made the people work very hard and pay a lot of money for all of his grand building projects. The first thing that Jeroboam and all of Israel do is to go to Solomon s son Rehoboam to talk to him and just ask him to lighten the burdens that were placed on them. They told him that if he would work with them and help them, they would be loyal to him and would serve him as their king. Rehoboam told them to come back in three days for his answer.

" Rehoboam sought the advice of the elders who had given advice to Solomon. The elders gave very good advice. They said that if you work with them and give them a fair and favorable answer, they will always work with you and will follow you as their king. It is good to listen to those who are older. The Lord has blessed us with parents and grandparents who have lived for many years before us. They know and understand things that we don t. If we listen to their advice then we can avoid so many problems in our lives. 1 KI N G S 12:8-11 B u t h e r e j e c t e d t h e ad v i c e w h i c h t h e e l d e r s h ad gi v e n h i m, an d c o n s u l t e d t h e y o u n g m e n w h o h ad gr o w n u p w i t h h i m, w h o s t o o d be f o r e h i m. " Rehoboam didn t like the advice of the elders. He listened to his friends who told him, Who do they think they are? You are the one in charge here. Why let them tell you what to do? Put them in their place. Tell them if you think my father was tough, I can be tougher than he was. Rehoboam s young friends gave him advice that was completely the opposite of the elder s advice. Sometimes we may want to listen to our friends instead of the wisdom of someone older. We need to be careful because those who are older usually know best. As Rehoboam will learn the hard way, it is best to listen to our elders. 1 KI N G S 12:12-14 S o J e r o bo am an d al l t h e p e o p l e c am e t o R e h o bo am t h e t h i r d d ay, as t h e k i n g h ad d i r e c t e d, s ay i n g, " C o m e bac k t o m e t h e t h i r d d ay. Instead of taking the advice of the elders who had experience with the people, he did what his friends told him to do. He told them, I am the king. I have the power. How dare you tell me what to do. I can be rougher than my father. He chastised you with a whip; I will chastise you with scourges if you don t obey me. People who are leaders can use their power for good towards the people they are over, or they can use it for evil. A good leader will be a leader who is willing to be a servant to the people. Jesus is the perfect example of a good leader. Unfortunately, Rehoboam is an example of a bad leader. Listening To Good Advice The object of this game is to demonstrate how hard it is to sometimes listen to the Lord s voice when there are so many voices around you in the world. Rehoboam was given some very bad advice in our story. How important is it for us to listen for the Lord? You will need a small stuffed animal (or any object will do) and a blindfold. Ask for a volunteer. Blindfold them. Tell them that their goal is to find the stuffed animal. Choose another child to be the Lord s voice. They will try to instruct the blindfolded child where to go to find the stuffed animal. The rest of the class will be the world s voices. They will give bad directions on purpose to try to keep the blindfolded child from finding the stuffed animal. Allow the children to play for a few minutes and switch roles a few times if they would like to.

14 Have everyone sit in a circle and ask those children who were blindfolded to share what it was like to try to find the stuffed animal. Was it hard to listen to the right voice? Were they able to find it? How is this like listening to the right advice in our lives? It s not always easy. But we can listen to our parents and grandparents, read our Bibles, and pray for wisdom. 1 KI N G S 12:15-17 S o t h e k i n g d i d n o t l i s t e n t o t h e p e o p l e ; f o r t h e t u r n o f e v e n t s w as f r o m t h e L O R D, t h at H e m i gh t f u l f i l l H i s w o r d, w h i c h t h e L O R D h ad s p o k e n by Ah i j ah t h e S h i l o n i t e t o J e r o bo am t h e s o n o f N e bat. Because Rehoboam didn t listen to the people the kingdom was divided just like the prophet of God said it would be, which fulfilled the word of the Lord. The people told him, What does it profit us to follow you? Only your family will profit. We don t have to do what you say; we ll take care of ourselves and go to our own homes. We re out of here! Only the Israelites living in Judah continued to follow Solomon s son. There will now be the nation of Israel (the northern 10 tribes) and the nation of Judah.

The king sent out the man in charge of collecting taxes, but the people rebelled against Rehoboam and they killed him. The king was just barely able to get away with his life. So the Bible says that Israel is in rebellion to this day. There was never a time when the tribes reunited. When we disobey God we will be disciplined. 1 KI N G S 12:20 N o w i t c am e t o p as s w h e n al l I s r ae l h e ar d t h at J e r o bo am h ad c o m e bac k, t h e y s e n t f o r h i m an d c al l e d h i m t o t h e c o n gr e gat i o n, an d m ad e h i m k i n g o v e r al l I s r ae l. Only the tribe of Judah and house of Benjamin remained with Solomon s son, Rehoboam, just like God had said would happen through his prophet. It is interesting that Jeroboam never tried to take over or to set himself up as king. He waited on the Lord and the Lord did as He said He would do. Unfortunately though as we will see in future lessons, Jeroboam didn t obey the Lord for very long. 1 KI N G S 12:21-24 An d w h e n R e h o bo am c am e t o J e r u s al e m, h e as s e m bl e d al l t h e h o u s e o f J u d ah w i t h t h e t r i be o f B e n j am i n, o n e h u n d r e d an d e i gh t y t h o u s an d c h o s e n

Rehoboam called together a large army to fight the rebellion but the prophet of God told them that this was the Lord s doing because of the disobedience of the people. He told them not to fight against their brothers and to go home. So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home. When we disobey God we will be disciplined. Because of disobedience, sin, and worshipping other gods and idols, the once rich and mighty kingdom became divided into two smaller nations. God, still in love, called out to them to love and obey Him and to take part in His blessings but the people continued to sin. When we put people and things in our lives ahead of God, this is sin. God wants us to obey and put him first so that we can live a happy life and share in His blessings. Life apart from God is very empty and miserable.

17 The Obedience Game Using the enclosed template make enough copies for the children in your class. Everyone can make a game board even though two players will play on one board. Cut out the game board and glue onto a piece of construction paper or cardstock. Cut around the edge of the construction paper. Using contact paper, laminate the game board. You will need one button for each child as a game piece. Have the children form pairs. The object of the game is to be the first player to have their game piece land on each of the eight squares and give an example of obedience for each square to win. Place the game board at least 2 feet from the players (they can play on the floor if they like). Have the first player pitch their button onto the board. If they land on the first square they can give an example of obedience in the area listed. For example, chores - the child would give an example of how they might obey with their household chores. Then they will wait for their next turn when they will try to land on square 2. If they do not land in the right square then they will have to wait until their next turn. After the children have played for a while have them share with one another some examples of obeying in each of the categories. Encourage them to take the game board home and show their family how to play. PRAYER Lead the children in a prayer of commitment to follow the Lord with all of their hearts. To learn from the bad choices that we read about in the Bible and to always serve the Lord. If there are any children who have not yet responded to the gospel, give them opportunity to do so.
