1 Physics 435 and 535 Fall 2016 Gravitational Physics Instructor: Prof. Leopoldo A. Pando Zayas Office: Randall 3421, , Lectures:10:00 11:30 TTh in 335 WH Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday 10:00-11:00 or by appointment Textbook: Ray D Inverno, Introducing Einstein s Relativity I wanted the student to gain insight into, and confidence in handling, the basic equations of the theory. From notes to the student in the introduction Grade Evaluation: A letter grade will be assigned based on: Homework (30%), Midterms I, II and Final (60%), Project (10%). Grades will be assigned independently for Physics 435 and Physics 535. Homework: Homework is due at the end of class on listed due date. Late homework is not accepted unless prior arrangements have been made. While I encourage you to work collectively on homework assignments, your work should be original and reflect your understanding of the problem. Namely, solutions should not be copied from other sources. Physics 535: The class combines two sections Physics 435 and Physics 535. The lectures and the schedule are the same for both sections. However, there will be extra homework problems for students registered in Physics 535; the expectation for the project are also higher. I will be also available to discuss conceptual issues that result from the extra material that will be covered. For students in Physics 535, and those very interested in advanced topics I encourage to view this class as an open-ended introduction to general relativity, including to some research aspects. Project: As an advanced undergraduate and graduate class, an introduction to research in the field is promoted by means of a project. All students are expected to participate in a short term project which amounts to 10% of the grade. I will distribute a project handout later, after the precise enrollment figures are established. First Midterm: On Oct. 13, Midterm you can use your notes. 1

2 Second Midterm: On Nov. 17, Midterm you can use your notes. Final : Dec. 20, 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. Final you can use your notes. Honesty: All students are expected to take personal responsibility for upholding the standards of academic integrity of the University community. Any student determined to have engaged in any form of academic dishonesty, including but not limited to plagiarism, cheating and copying homework or exams will receive a zero on the assignment. In accordance with University policy, all cases of misconduct will be reported to either LSA Office of the Assistant deand for Student Academic Affairs or the Rackham Resolution Officer. 2

3 Other literature (These books are good complimentary reading, you don t need to buy them): M. P. Hobson, G. Efstathiou and A. N. Lasenby, General Relativity: An introduction for Physicists Written for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. I like this book very much and will use parts in lectures. Bernard F. Schutz, A first course in general relativity Nice introduction, good complement to the main textbook. Physic 435. Has been used previously for S. Carroll, Spacetime and Geometry: An Introduction to General Relativity My favorite book but heavy on the graduate level side. If you registered for 535, this is what you aim for. R. Wald, General Relativity The standard graduate-level book. This book is very mathematical in its presentation but it is fairly rigorous. For those registered for 535, this is the level you need to achieve... eventually. C. W. Misner, K. S. Thorne and J. A. Wheeler, Gravitation This book was the standard for various generations. It is very extensive, a bit outdated but fun reading. J. B. Hartle, Gravity: An Introduction to Einstein s General Relativity Less mathematically sophisticated than D Inverno s but strong on the conceptual points. 3
