UPPER BOUNDS FOR THE NUMBER OF ZEROES FOR SOME ABELIAN INTEGRALS ARMENGOL GASULL, J. TOMÁS LÁZARO, AND JOAN TORREGROSA Abstract. Consider the vector field x = ygx,y),y = xgx,y), where the set of critical points Gx,y) = } is formed by K straight lines, not passing through the origin and parallel to one or two orthogonal directions. We perturb it with a general polynomial perturbation of degree n and study which is the maximum number of limit cycles that can bifurcate from the period annulus of the origin in terms of K and n. Our approach is based on the explicit computation of the Abelian integral that controls the bifurcation and in a new result for bounding the number of zeroes of a certain family of real functions. When we apply our results for K 4 we recover or improve some results obtained in several previous wors.. Introduction The problem of determining the number of limit cycles bifurcating from the period annulus of a system ẋ = ygx,y)+εpx,y), ) ẏ = xgx,y)+εqx,y), wherepx,y),qx,y)arepolynomialsofagivendegree, Gx,y)satisfiesG,) and εisasmall parameter, hasbeenwidely studied seeforinstance[,4,7,8,9,,,3]). Among this type of systems we will be concerned with those having K K Gx,y) = x a j ) y b l ), ) where a j and b l are real numbers with a i a j and b i b j for i j. The unperturbed system ε = ) presents a centre at the origin and any line x = a j or y = b l constitutes an invariant set of singular points of the system. This invariant set is formed by parallel and/or orthogonal invariant lines. The aim of this wor is to provide, for small values of ε, upper bounds for the number of limit cycles bifurcating from periodic orbits of the unperturbed system in the period Mathematics Subject Classification. 2 A. GASULL, J. T. LÁZARO, AND J. TORREGROSA annulus D = x,y) R < } x +y < ρ := min a j, b l } j,l Several previous wors handle this problem for different particular choices of small values of K and K. The following cases have been studied: one line in []; two parallel lines in [3]; two orthogonal lines in []; three lines, two of them parallel and one perpendicular in [5]; and four lines with a special configuration in []. Other related wors are [8], with Gx, y) any quadratic polynomial; [], one multiple singular line; or [7] for K isolated singular points. As it is standard in this type of problems, we rewrite our system ) in the equivalent form on D, ẋ = y +εpx,y)/gx,y), 3) ẏ = x+εqx,y)/gx,y), where Gx,y) is defined in ). Let us denote by γ r = x,y) x +y = r }, with < r < ρ, anyperiodicorbitoftheunperturbedsystem. Itiswell nown thattheassociated return map, whose isolated zeroes give rise to limit cycles, is Πr,ε) = r+ir)ε+oε ) where Ir) is the Abelian integral Ir) = Qx,y)dx Px,y)dy γ r Gx, y).. 4) This integral is the so-called first-order) Poincaré-Melniov-Pontryagin function. The return map Πr,ε) is analytic in r ranging on any compact subset of,ρ) for ε small enough. It is nown see for instance [3]) that, provided Ir) does not vanish exactly, the number of zeroes of Πr,ε), for ε small enough, is at most the number of zeroes of Ir) taing into account their multiplicity. The problem of estimating this number in terms of the involved degrees is commonly called the weaened Hilbert s 6th Problem. The goal of this paper is to provide an upper bound for the number of zeroes of the Abelian integral associated to a system of the form ), depending on the number of critical straight lines and the degree n of the perturbative polynomials Px,y) and Qx,y). We prove: Theorem.. Consider a system of the form ), ẋ = ygx,y)+εpx,y), ẏ = xgx,y)+εqx,y), where K K Gx,y) = x a j ) y b l ), Px,y), Qx,y) are polynomials of degree n, a j and b l are real numbers with a i a j and b i b j for i j, ε is a small parameter and K K. Moreover, when K =, K and l= y b l) :=. l=
UPPER BOUNDS FOR THE NUMBER OF ZEROES 3 Let Ir) be its associated Abelian integral defined in 4). Then, the number of real zeroes of Ir) in,min a j, b l }), counting their multiplicities, ZI), satisfies [ ] n+3 [ n K +, K =, ] ZI) [ ] ) [ ] K + K n+ n ) +L + +L, K, where K = Card a,..., a K } K, K = Card a,..., a K, b,..., b K } K K, L = Carda j +b l, j =,...,K, l =,...,K } K K and [s] denotes the integer part of s. Note that the symmetric situation, K K, evolves in a completely similar way changing x,y) by y,x). Recall that using this approach we now that the total number of limit cycles counting their multiplicities) of system ) which bifurcate from its periodic orbits is bounded by the maximum number of isolated zeroes counting their multiplicities) of Ir) for < r < ρ = min a j, b l }. The proof of Theorem. is based on two steps: a first one where the corresponding Abelian integral 4) is explicitly computed and a second one where an upper estimate on the number of its zeroes is provided. This is done in Section and 4, respectively. This second part is supported on the following result, proved in Section 3, that we believe it is interesting by itself. Theorem.. Consider a function of the form K Fx) = P x)+ P j x), 5) x+cj where P j x), j =,...,K, are real polynomials and c j,j =,...,K, are real constants. Then its number of real zeroes, taing into account their multiplicities, ZF), satisfies ZF) K degp j ) ) ) + +degp ). 6) Here deg) =. max,...,k In the forthcoming paper [6] the above result is extended to a wider family of functions, studying in particular its sharpness and its relation with the theory of Chebyshev systems. We only comment here that when degp j ) coincide for all j =,...,K it can be seen that the result is sharp. In Section 5 we apply Theorem. to some particular cases, already studied by other authors, all satisfying K + K 4. More concretely, in that cases we show that our theorem either gives new proofs or improve the nown results for the upper bounds for the number of zeroes of Ir). The main differences between our wor and the previous ones are:
4 A. GASULL, J. T. LÁZARO, AND J. TORREGROSA - We manage to study the case of having an arbitrary number K of lines of critical points for the unperturbed system. All previous results consider at most 4 lines with several relative positions. - We prove a result Theorem.) for bounding the number of zeroes of a special type of functions which are precisely the ones that appear in the final expression of the Abelian integral Ir). The previous wors apply general methods lie, squaring the equation to eliminate radicals, or the principle of the argument, extending the function to C. It can be seen that when there are more than two square roots in the expression 5), Theorem. is sharper than those general methods, see [6]. This is the reason for which we can improve some of the previously given upper bounds for ZI). Some comments about the sharpness of the upper bounds provided by Theorem. are given at the end of Section 4.. Explicit computation of the Abelian integral The aim of this section is to obtain an explicit expression of the Abelian integral presented in the introduction. The first two lemmas deal with the cases of one and two perpendicular singular lines. They are already nown, see [, ], but the proof that we present is shorter. The next two results extend them to the case of an arbitrary number of parallel or perpendicular lines. Lemma.. Let a be a non-zero real number. For any < r < a and any polynomial R n+ x,y) of degree n+, define I a n+ r) = R n+ rcosθ,rsinθ) rcosθ a dθ. Then, for n, one has I a n+ r) = S [n )/]+r ) a r +T [n/] r ), for suitable polynomials S s ρ) and T s ρ) of degree s. Moreover I a r) = πr / a r. Proof. It is easy to chec that rcosθ a dθ = π a r. Hence the expression for I a r) follows. Let us now deal with n. We will proceed inductively. When n = we have that I a r) = a, +a, rcosθ+a, rsinθ dθ. rcosθ a
For this case we can write I a r) =I a r)+a, UPPER BOUNDS FOR THE NUMBER OF ZEROES 5 rcosθ rcosθ a dθ+a, rsinθ rcosθ a dθ = I a r)+a rcosθ a+a, rcosθ a dθ = Ia r)+πa, +a, a πa, πa, +a, a) a r. rcosθ a dθ = Now we will prove the expression for In+ a r) by induction on the degree. By hypothesis of induction it is enough to prove the formula when R n+ x,y) is a homogeneous polynomial of degree n+. If we write n+ i= r n+ a i,n+ i sin i θcos n+ i θ n+ dθ = r n+ rcosθ a i= a i,n+ i sin i θcos n+ i θ dθ, rcosθ a using symmetry properties of the integrated functions, we now that all the integrals with an odd exponent in sinθ are zero. The unique case that remains to chec is = j. For it we can write r n+ cos n+ θ rcosθ a dθ = r n cos n θrcosθ a+a) dθ = rcosθ a r n cos n θdθ+a r n cos n θ rcosθ a dθ. We will treat separately the cases n even and n odd. When n is even the first term of the above sum is a polynomial of degree n/ in r and for the second term, using the induction hypothesis, the polynomials Sr ) and Tr ) are of degree [n ) )/]+ = n )/+ = n/ = [n )/]+ and [n )/] = n )/, respectively. The statement is proved, in this case, because we should add the monomial of degree n/ corresponding to the first summand. Hence the degree of the polynomial Tr ) is n/ = [n/].
6 A. GASULL, J. T. LÁZARO, AND J. TORREGROSA When n is odd the first term in the sum is zero. For the second term, from the inductionhypothesis, thepolynomialssr )andtr )areofdegree[n ) )/]+ = n 3)/+ = n )/ = [n )/] and [n )/] = [n/], respectively. Note that the contribution of this term to the polynomial Sr ) has one degree less than expected but the total degree is [n )/] + because it appears for the other terms. More concretely in the sinθ) [n+)/] term. Lemma.. Let a and b be non-zero real numbers. For any < r < min a, b ) and any polynomial R n+ x,y) of degree n+ consider I a,b n+ r) = Then, for n, we have that I a,b n+ r) = a +b r R n+ rcosθ,rsinθ) rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ. U[n/]+ r ) a r + V [n/]+r ) b r )+W [n )/] r ), for some given polynomials U s ρ), V s ρ) and W s ρ) of degree s. Moreover ) I a,b R a r) = π a +b r a r + b. b r Proof. Applying for instance residues formula, we obtain ) dθ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) = π a a +b r a r + b. b r Therefore the expression for I a,b r) follows. To obtain the result for all n we will proceed inductively. When n = we have that I a,b r) = For this case we can write I a,b r) =I a,b r)+a, a, a, +a, rcosθ+a, rsinθ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) rcosθ a+a rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ+ rsinθ b+b π dθ = Ia,b r)+a, rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ. rsinθ b dθ+ a, rcosθ a dθ+a,a+a, b) rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ = π a, b r +a π, a r + a, +a, a+a, b πa a +b r b r + πb ). a r This last expression satisfies the statement with Ur ) and Vr ) polynomials of degree [n/]+ = [/]+ = in r and the polynomial Wr ) is identically zero. Now we will prove the expression for I a,b n+ r) by induction on the degree of R nx,y). As in the proof of Lemma., by induction hypothesis, it is enough to prove the result

For this case we can write [ n ] j= n+ i= [ n+ ] j= [ n ] j= = [ n+ ] j= j j = r n+ a i,n+ i sin i θcos n+ i θ n+ dθ = rcosθ a)rsinθ b) i= r n+ a j+,n+ j+) sinθ cos θ) j cos n+ j+) θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) r n+ a j,n+ j cos θ) j cos n+ j θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ = r n+ a i,n+ i sin i θcos n+ i θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ+ j π ) ) a j+,n j r j ) r n j )+ sinθcos n j ) θ dθ+ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) j π ) ) a j,n+ j r j ) r n+ j ) cos n+ j ) θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ. dθ = When < j the statement is proved using the induction hypothesis in each of the terms of the sum since, after the multiplication by the monomial r ) j, we have that the polynomialsur ),Vr )andwr )havedegree[n j ))/]++j ) = [n/]+, [n j ))/]++j ) = [n/]+ and [n j ) )/]+j ) = [n )/], respectively. The unique case that remains to chec is = j for both integrals: r n+ sinθcos n θ dθ and rcosθ a)rsinθ b) r n+ cos n+ θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ. For the first one we can write r n+ sinθcos n θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ = r n cos n θ rcosθ a dθ+b r n rsinθ b+b)cos n θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ = r n cos n θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ. Thus we can tae only the first term in the sum because for the second one we can apply once more the induction hypothesis. For this term, using the computation of In a r), the corresponding polynomial Wr ), that is called T in Lemma., has degree [n )/] and the polynomial Ur ) can be written as a + b r )S [n )/]+ r ) and it has degree [n )/]+)+ = [n/]+.
8 A. GASULL, J. T. LÁZARO, AND J. TORREGROSA Now we will consider the last integral, that is r n+ cos n+ θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ = r n cos n θ rsinθ b dθ+a r n cos n θrcosθ a+a) rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ = r n cos n θ rcosθ a)rsinθ b) dθ. Changing θ by θ + π/ we can use the expression for In b r) computed in Lemma. to prove that, as in the previous computation, this integral satisfies the formula of the statement. The second term follows applying the induction hypothesis. Then the statement is proved. Proposition.3. 10 A. GASULL, J. T. LÁZARO, AND J. TORREGROSA 3. Proof of Theorem. The proof of Theorem. will use the nown as Derivation-Division proceduresee for instance [, p. 9]). First we give two technical results useful to compute successive derivatives that appear applying this procedure to the function 5). The proof of the first one is very simple and implies that, in general, D p n x) x+a x+b ) α ) = q n+ x) x+a)α x+b) α+. 8) The proof of the second one is a little more involved and, as we will see, it constitutes the ey point for proving Theorem.. It shows that the case = n+ in 8) is very special, since it undergoes a sudden drop of the degree of the polynomial q n+ x). Lemma 3.. Consider a b and α Z real numbers. Then ) α ) x+a Dp n x)x+a) α ) = q n x)x+a) α, D p n x) = q n+ x) x+a)α x+b x+b) α+, where p i x) and q i x) are polynomials of degree i. Lemma 3.. Consider a b and α Z real numbers. Then ) α ) x+a D p n+ n x) = q n x) x+a)α n+) x+b x+b) α+n+), where p n x) and q n x) are polynomials of degree n. Proof. We will prove the statement inductively. It is not restrictive to consider p n x) as a monic polynomial and written as p n x) = x+a) n +p n x) for a suitable polynomial p n x) of degree n. From the equalities ) α ) ) α ) x+a x+a D p n+ n x) = D n+ x+a) n +p n x)) = x+b x+b ) α ) ) α )) x+a x+a D n+ x+a) n +D D n p n x) x+b x+b and using Lemma 3., we have that it is enough to prove the statement for p n x) = x+a) n. Indeed, it is not difficult to chec, inductively, that the following expression is satisfied with ) x+a) D j α+n = x+a)α+n j x+b) α x+b) α+j j C j,l x+a) l l= ) j C j,l = ) j+l a b) j l Γα+n+) l Γα+n j l)+) l n j +m), m=

Performing the same procedure K times we reach F K x) = Pn K,K x). Note that all the polynomials Pn j,l x) appearing in the process have degree n. Since the total number of derivatives is K )n + ) + n + and the degree of the last polynomial is n the total number of zeroes of Fx) is bounded by Kn+)+n, as we wanted to prove. 4. Proof of Theorem. We start studying the case K =. From the expression of Proposition.3 and applying Theorem. we now that the number of zeroes of Ir) is less or equal than [ ] ) n [ [ ] n K + + = ] K n+3 [ n +. ] m=
A. GASULL, J. T. LÁZARO, AND J. TORREGROSA as we wanted to see. Consider now K. We now that the set a j +b l, j =,...,K, l =,...,K } has L elements. Define the function L Hr ) := a ji +b l i r ), = i= using all the different elements of the set. In the last step ã,...,ã K, denote the different values of the set a,..., a K } and b,..., b K, denote the different values of the set b,..., b K }\ a,..., a K }. Remember that K = Card a,..., a K } and K = Card a,..., a K, b,..., b K } K. Applying Theorem. to the right hand part of the last equality we have the expression of the statement because the number of zeroes of Ir) in,min a j, b l }) satisfies ZI) K + K )[n/]+l+)+[n )/]+L. Remar 4.. The upper bounds given in Theorem. are maximal when all the straight lines are generically located, that is, when K = K, K = K and L = K K hold. Denote by K the total number of straight lines parallel or orthogonal one-to-one) that we consider in our system. Then K = K +K. Therefore, the maximal value for the upper bound for the number of zeroes of the Abelian integral Ir) is achieved for K = K = K/ if K even and K = K +)/, K = K )/ if K odd. We have the following result: Corollary 4.. Under the hypotheses of Theorem. and denoting by K = K + K the total of number of straight lines of singular points, we have that the number of zeroes
UPPER BOUNDS FOR THE NUMBER OF ZEROES 3 of Ir) satisfies [ [ ] n n ZI) K + +K +) ] [ K ][ ] K + +K. Although in this wor we do not consider the problem of the sharpness of the upper bounds for the Abelian integral Ir) given in Theorem. we end this section with several comments about this question. Fixed some K and K, first let us count how many effective free parameters gives the perturbation P, Q) in the expression of Ir). In principle these two polynomials of degree n have both togethern+)n+) parameters, but some symmetry considerations based on the first expression of Ir), reduce this number in the computation of Ir) to n+4)n+)/ when K K and to [n+ 5)n + )/4] when K K =. On the other hand the growth of the upper bound for ZI) is linear in n. This fact maes natural to believe that, fixed K and K, the upper bounds for n large enough are essentially reached. Besides, when we restrict our study to families of polynomial vector fields of degree n it is natural to tae K = n. Thus, applying the previous results, the upper bound for the number of zeroes of the corresponding Abelian integral Ir) grows as n 3 /4, when K K, while the number of free parameters only grows as n /. This difference in growth implies, for n large enough, the existence of a collection of relations between the coefficients of the functions P j x) that appear when we apply Theorem. to the final expression of Ir). Therefore, in this situation, it can not be expected at all the sharpness of the upper bound. When K K = something similar happens. 5. Relations with some previous wors There are some previous wors where the results of this paper can be applied. In some cases we can give an alternative proof of the corresponding upper bound; in the other cases the upper bound is improved. We remar that in some of these wors the sharpness of the obtained upper bounds is also studied. In our paper, this question has not been considered. In [] the authors deal with the case of a single straight line of critical points, Gx,y) = x. In this case they proved that ZI) n and that the bound is sharp. Our result gives an alternative proof for the upper bound. The case with two straight lines of singularities was studied in [3] and []. The first one considered the case of both lines been parallel and the latter when they are perpendicular. In the first paper the authors proved that the number of zeroes satisfies n+3, n is odd, ZI) n+, n is even, while the upper bound provided by Theorem. is sharper: ZI) 3n+5, n is odd, 3n+4, n is even.
4 A. GASULL, J. T. LÁZARO, AND J. TORREGROSA In the second paper, it was proved that 3n+, n is odd, 3n, n is even, ZI) Using Theorem. we get that ZI) 3n+5 3n+7, n is odd, 3n+8, n is even., n is odd, 3n+, n is even. The difference can be explained because the perturbation in [] satisfies P n,) = Q n,) = while our study has not this restriction. In [5] the authors considered three lines, two parallel and one perpendicular. They proved that n+, n is odd, n, n is even, ZI) 5n+3, n is odd, 5n+8, n is even. Using Theorem., with K,K ) =,), the last inequalities can be improved to ZI) n+, n is odd, n+3, n is even. The special case with four lines given by Gx,y) = x a )y b ) was studied in []. When a b the authors showed that ZI) 3n+5, n is odd, 3n+, n is even, andit wasclaimed thatthese boundsaresharp. The upper boundgiven by Theorem. increases inoneunit theprevious ones. Inournotationa = a = aandb = b = b, and so K = K = but K = K = L =. In the generic case K = K = K = K = L = ) we get an upper bound that grows lie 5n/. References [] A. Atabaigi, N.
