Introduction to Plasma Physics P. Gibbon Forschungszntrum Jülich GmbH, Institut for Advancd Simulation, Jülich Suprcomputing Cntr, Jülich, Grmany arxiv: v1 [physics.acc-ph] 30 May 017 Abstract Ths nots ar intndd to provid a brif primr in plasma physics, introducing common dfinitions, basic proprtis, and typical procsss found in plasmas. Ths concpts ar inhrnt in contmporary plasma-basd acclrator schms, and thus provid a foundation for th mor advancd xpositions that follow in this volum. No prior knowldg of plasma physics is rquird, but th radr is assumd to b familiar with basic lctrodynamics and fluid mchanics. Kywords Plasma proprtis; -fluid modl; Langmuir wavs; lctromagntic wav propagation; disprsion rlation; nonlinar wavs. 1 Plasma typs and dfinitions Plasmas ar oftn dscribd as th fourth stat of mattr, alongsid gass, liquids and solids, a dfinition which dos littl to illuminat thir main physical attributs. In fact, a plasma can xhibit bhaviour charactristic of all thr of th mor familiar stats, dpnding on its dnsity and tmpratur, so w obviously nd to look for othr distinguishing faturs. A simpl txtbook dfinition of a plasma [1, ] would b: a quasi-nutral gas of chargd particls showing collctiv bhaviour. This may sm prcis nough, but th rathr fuzzy-sounding trms of quasi-nutrality and collctivity rquir furthr xplanation. Th first of ths, quasi-nutrality, is actually just a mathmatical way of saying that vn though th particls making up a plasma consist of fr lctrons and ions, thir ovrall charg dnsitis cancl ach othr in quilibrium. So if n and n i ar, rspctivly, th numbr dnsitis of lctrons and ions with charg stat Z, thn ths ar locally balancd, i.. n Zn i. (1) Th scond proprty, collctiv bhaviour, ariss bcaus of th long-rang natur of th 1/r Coulomb potntial, which mans that local disturbancs in quilibrium can hav a strong influnc on rmot rgions of th plasma. In othr words, macroscopic filds usually dominat ovr short-livd microscopic fluctuations, and a nt charg imbalanc ρ = (Zn i n ) will immdiatly giv ris to an lctrostatic fild according to Gauss s law, E = ρ/ε 0. Likwis, th sam st of chargs moving with vlocitis v and v i will giv ris to a currnt dnsity J = (Zn i v i n v ). This in turn inducs a magntic fild according to Ampèrs law, B = µ 0 J. It is ths intrnally drivn lctric and magntic filds that largly dtrmin th dynamics of th plasma, including its rspons to xtrnally applid filds through particl or lasr bams as, for xampl, in th cas of plasma-basd acclrator schms. Now that w hav stablishd what plasmas ar, it is natural to ask whr w can find thm. In fact thy ar rathr ubiquitous: in th cosmos, 99% of th visibl univrs including stars, th intrstllar
mdium and jts of matrial from various astrophysical objcts is in a plasma stat. Closr to hom, th ionosphr, xtnding from around 50 km (quivalnt to 10 Earth radii) to 1000 km, provids vital protction from solar radiation to lif on Earth. Trrstrial plasmas can b found in fusion dvics (machins dsignd to confin, ignit and ultimatly xtract nrgy from dutrium tritium ful), strt lighting, industrial plasma torchs and tching procsss, and lightning dischargs. Ndlss to say, plasmas play a cntral rol in th topic of th prsnt school, supplying th mdium to support vry larg travlling-wav fild structurs for th purpos of acclrating particls to high nrgis. Tabl 1 givs a brif ovrviw of ths various plasma typs and thir proprtis. Considr a hypothtical xprimnt in which a positivly chargd ball is immrsd in a plasma; s Fig. 1. Aftr som tim, th ions in th ball s vicinity will b rplld and th lctrons will b attractd, lading to an altrd avrag charg dnsity in this rgion. It turns out that w can calculat th potntial φ(r) of this ball aftr such a radjustmnt has takn plac. Fig. 1: Dby shilding of chargd sphrs immrsd in a plasma First of all, w nd to know how fast th lctrons and ions actually mov. For qual ion and lctron tmpraturs (T = T i ), w hav 1 m v = 1 m iv i = 3 k BT. ()
Thrfor, for a hydrogn plasma, whr Z = A = 1, v 1/ 1/ i m m = = = 1 v m i Am p 43. In othr words, th ions ar almost stationary on th lctron tim-scal. To a good approximation, w oftn writ n i n 0, (3) whr n 0 = N A ρ m /A is th matrial (.g. gas) numbr dnsity, with ρ m bing th usual mass dnsity and N A th Avogadro constant. In thrmal quilibrium, th lctron dnsity follows a Boltzmann distribution [1], n = n i xp(φ/k B T ), (4) whr n i is th ion dnsity, k B is th Boltzmann constant, and φ(r) is th potntial cratd by th xtrnal disturbanc. From Gauss s law (Poisson s quation), w can also writ φ = ρ ε 0 = ε 0 (n i n ). (5) So now w can combin (5) with (4) and (3) in sphrical gomtry 1 to liminat n and arriv at a physically maningful solution: φ D = 1 xp( r/λ D ). (6) 4πε 0 r This condition supposs that φ 0 at r =. Th charactristic lngth-scal λ D insid th xponntial factor is known as th Dby lngth, and is givn by ε0 k λ D = B T 1/ 1/ 1/ T n = 743 n V cm 3 cm. (7) Th Dby lngth is a fundamntal proprty of narly all plasmas of intrst, and dpnds qually on th plasma s tmpratur and dnsity. An idal plasma has many particls pr Dby sphr, i.. N D n 4π 3 λ3 D 1, (8) which is a prrquisit for th collctiv bhaviour discussd arlir. An altrnativ way of xprssing this condition is via th so-calld plasma paramtr, g 1 n λ 3, (9) D which is ssntially th rciprocal of N D. Classical plasma thory is basd on th assumption that g 1, which implis dominanc of collctiv ffcts ovr collisions btwn particls. Thrfor, bfor w rfin our plasma classification, it is worth taking a quick look at th natur of collisions btwn plasma particls. 1. Collisions in plasmas Whr N D 1, scrning ffcts ar rducd and collisions will dominat th particl dynamics. In intrmdiat rgims, collisionality is usually masurd via th lctron ion collision rat, givn by 1 1 d ( r dr r dφ dr ). ν i = π3/ n Z 4 ln Λ 1/ (4πε 0 ) m v 3 t s 1, (10) 3
whr v t k B T /m is th lctron thrmal vlocity and ln Λ is a slowly varying trm, calld th Coulomb logarithm, which typically taks a numrical valu of ordr Th numrical cofficint in xprssion (10) may vary btwn diffrnt txts dpnding on th dfinition usd. Our dfinition is consistnt with that in Rfs. [5] and [3], which dfin th collision rat according to th avrag tim takn for a thrmal lctron to b dflctd by 90 via multipl scattrings from fixd ions. Th collision frquncy can also b writtn as ν i Z ln Λ ω p 10N D with ln Λ 9N D /Z, whr ω p is th lctron plasma frquncy dfind blow in Eq. (11). 1.3 Plasma classification Armd with our dfinition of plasma idality, Eq. (8), w can procd to mak a classification of plasma typs in dnsity tmpratur spac. This is illustratd for a fw xampls in Fig. ; th acclrator plasmas of intrst in th prsnt school ar found in th middl of this chart, having dnsitis corrsponding to roughly atmosphric prssur and tmpraturs of a fw V (10 4 K) as a rsult of fild ionization; s Sction 1.5. Fig. : Exampls of plasma typs in th dnsity tmpratur plan 1.4 Plasma oscillations So far w hav considrd charactristics, such as dnsity and tmpratur, of a plasma in quilibrium. W can also ask how fast th plasma will rspond to an xtrnal disturbanc, which could b du to lctromagntic wavs (.g. a lasr puls) or particl bams. Considr a quasi-nutral plasma slab in which an lctron layr is displacd from its initial position by a distanc δ, as illustratd in Fig. 3. This crats two capacitor plats with surfac charg σ = ±n δ, rsulting in an lctric fild E = σ ε 0 = n δ ε 0. Th lctron layr is acclratd back towards th slab by this rstoring forc according to dv m dt = m d δ dt = E = n δ, ε 0 4
Fig. 3: Slab or capacitor modl of an oscillating lctron layr or whr is th lctron plasma frquncy. d δ dt + ω p δ = 0 1/ ( n ω p n ε 0 m cm 3 ) 1/ s 1 (11) This quantity can b obtaind via anothr rout by rturning to th Dby shath problm of Sction 1.1 and asking how quickly it would tak th plasma to adjust to th insrtion of th forign charg. For a plasma of tmpratur T, th rspons tim to rcovr quasi-nutrality is just th ratio of th Dby lngth to th thrmal vlocity v t k B T /m ; that is, t D λ ( D ε0 k = B T v t n m k B T ) 1/ = ω 1 p. Fig. 4: Rspons tim to form a Dby shath If th plasma rspons tim is shortr than th priod of a xtrnal lctromagntic fild (such as a lasr), thn this radiation will b shildd out. To mak this statmnt mor quantitativ, considr th ratio ωp ω = n λ ε 0 m 4π c. 5
Stting this to unity dfins th wavlngth λ µ for which n = n c, or n c 10 1 λ µ cm 3. (1) Radiation with wavlngth λ > λ µ will b rflctd. In th pr-satllit/cabl ra, this proprty was xploitd to good ffct in th transmission of long-wav radio signals, which utilizs rflction from th ionosphr to xtnd th rang of rcption. Typical gas jts hav P 1 bar and n = cm 3, and th critical dnsity for a glass lasr is n c (1µ) = 10 1 cm 3. Gas-jt plasmas ar thrfor undrdns, sinc ω /ω p = n /n c 1. In this cas, collctiv ffcts ar important if ω p τ int > 1, whr τ int is som charactristic intraction tim, such as th duration of a lasr puls or particl bam ntring th plasma. For xampl, if τ int = 100 fs and n = cm 3, thn ω p τ int = 1.8 and w will nd to considr th plasma rspons on th intraction tim-scal. Gnrally this is th situation w sk to xploit in all kinds of plasma applications, including short-wavlngth radiation, nonlinar rfractiv proprtis, gnration of high lctric/magntic filds and, of cours, particl acclration. (a) (b) Fig. 5: (a) Ovrdns plasma, with ω < ω p, showing mirror-lik bhaviour. (b) Undrdns plasma, with ω > ω p, which bhavs lik a nonlinar rfractiv mdium. 1.5 Plasma cration Plasmas ar cratd via ionization, which can occur in svral ways: through collisions of fast particls with atoms; through photoionization by lctromagntic radiation; or via lctrical brakdown in strong lctric filds. Th lattr two ar xampls of fild ionization, which is th mchanism most rlvant to th plasma acclrator contxt. To gt som ida of whn fild ionization occurs, w nd to know th typical fild strngth rquird to strip lctrons away from an atom. At th Bohr radius a B = m = cm, th lctric fild strngth is E a = 4πε 0 a V m 1. (13) B This thrshold can b xprssd as th so-calld atomic intnsity, I a = ε 0cE a W cm. (14) A lasr intnsity of I L > I a will thrfor guarant ionization for any targt matrial, though in fact ionization can occur wll blow this thrshold (.g. around W cm for hydrogn) du to multiphoton ffcts. Simultanous fild ionization of many atoms producs a plasma with lctron dnsity n and tmpratur T 1 10 V. 6
1.6 Rlativistic thrshold Bfor w discuss wav propagation in plasmas, it is usful to hav som ida of th strngth of th xtrnal filds usd to xcit thm. To do this, w considr th classical quation of motion for an lctron xposd to a linarly polarizd lasr fild E = ŷe 0 sin ωt: dv dt E 0 sin ωt. m This implis that th lctron will acquir a vlocity v = E 0 m ω cos ωt = v osc cos ωt, (15) which is usually xprssd in trms of a dimnsionlss oscillation amplitud a 0 v osc c p osc m c E 0 m ωc. (16) In many articls and books a 0 is rfrrd to as th quivr vlocity or momntum; it can xcd unity, in which cas th normalizd momntum (third xprssion) is mor appropriat, sinc th ral particl vlocity is just pinnd to th spd of light. Th lasr intnsity I L and wavlngth λ L ar rlatd to E 0 and ω through I L = 1 ε 0cE0, λ L = πc ω. By substituting ths into (16) on can show that whr a (I 18 λ µ) 1/, (17) I L I 18 = W cm, λ µ = λ L µm. From this xprssion it can b sn that w will hav rlativistic lctron vlocitis, or a 0 1, for intnsitis I L W cm, at wavlngths λ L 1 µm. Wav propagation in plasmas Th thory of wav propagation is an important subjct in its own right, and has inspird a vast body of litratur and a numbr of txtbooks [4, 5, 8]. Thr ar a grat many possibl ways in which plasmas can support wavs, dpnding on th local conditions, th prsnc of xtrnal lctric and magntic filds, and so on. Hr w will concntrat on two main wav forms: longitudinal oscillations of th kind w hav ncountrd alrady, and lctromagntic wavs. To driv and analys wav phnomna, thr ar svral possibl thortical approachs, with th suitability of ach dpnding on th lngthand tim-scals of intrst, which in laboratory plasmas can rang from nanomtrs to mtrs and from fmtosconds to sconds. Ths approachs ar: (i) first-principls N-body molcular dynamics; (ii) phas-spac mthods th Vlasov Boltzmann quation; (iii) two-fluid quations; (iv) magntohydrodynamics (singl magntizd fluid). Th first is rathr costly and limitd to much smallr rgions of plasma than usually ndd to dscrib th common typs of wav. Indd, th numbr of particls ndd for first-principls modlling of a tokamak would b around 10 1 ; a lasr-hatd gas rquirs 10 0 particls, still way out of rach of 7
vn th most powrful computrs availabl. Clarly a mor tractabl modl is ndd, and in fact many plasma phnomna can b analysd by assuming that ach chargd particl componnt of dnsity n s and vlocity u s bhavs in a fluid-lik mannr, intracting with othr spcis (s) via th lctric and magntic filds; this is th ida bhind approach (iii). Th rigorous way to driv th govrning quations in this approximation is via kintic thory, starting from mthod (ii) [, 5], which is byond th scop of this papr. Finally, slow wav phnomna on mor macroscopic, ion tim-scals can b handld with approach (iv) []. For th prsnt purposs, w thrfor start from th two-fluid quations for a plasma with finit tmpratur (T > 0) that is assumd to b collisionlss (ν i 0) and non-rlativistic, so that th fluid vlocitis ar such that u c. Th quations govrning th plasma dynamics undr ths conditions ar n s t + (n su s ) = 0, (18) du n s m s s = n dt s q s (E + u s B) P s, (19) d dt (P sn γ s s ) = 0, (0) whr P s is th thrmal prssur of spcis s and γ s th spcific hat ratio, or ( + N)/N with N th numbr of dgrs of frdom. Th continuity quation (18) tlls us that (in th absnc of ionization or rcombination) th numbr of particls of ach spcis is consrvd. Noting that th charg and currnt dnsitis can b writtn as ρ s = q s n s and J s = q s n s u s, rspctivly, Eq. (18) can b rwrittn as which xprsss th consrvation of charg. ρ s t + J s = 0, (1) Equation (19) govrns th motion of a fluid lmnt of spcis s in th prsnc of lctric and magntic filds E and B. In th absnc of filds, and assuming strict quasi-nutrality (n = Zn i = n; u = u i = u), w rcovr th mor familiar Navir Stoks quations ρ t + (ρu) = 0, () u t + (u )u = 1 ρ P. By contrast, in th plasma acclrator contxt w usually dal with tim-scals ovr which th ions can b assumd to b motionlss, i.. u i = 0, and also unmagntizd plasmas, so that th momntum quation rads n m du dt = n E P. (3) Not that E can includ both xtrnal and intrnal fild componnts (via charg sparation)..1 Longitudinal (Langmuir) wavs A charactristic proprty of plasmas is thir ability to transfr momntum and nrgy via collctiv motion. On of th most important xampls of this is th oscillation of lctrons against a stationary ion background, or Langmuir wavs. Rturning to th two-fluid modl, w can simplify (18) (0) by stting u i = 0, rstricting th lctron motion to on dimnsion (x) and taking y = z = 0: n t + x (n u ) = 0, 8
u n t + u u x d P = 0. dt n γ = m n E 1 P m x, (4) Th systm (4) has thr quations and four unknowns. To clos it, w nd an xprssion for th lctric fild, which, sinc B = 0, can b found from Gauss s law (Poisson s quation) with Zn i = n 0 : E x = ε 0 (n 0 n ). (5) Th systm of quations (4) (5) is nonlinar and, apart from a fw spcial cass, cannot b solvd xactly. A common tchniqu for analysing wavs in plasmas is to linariz th quations, which involvs assuming that th prturbd amplituds ar small compard to th quilibrium valus, i.. n = n 0 + n 1, u = u 1, P = P 0 + P 1, E = E 1, whr n 1 n 0 and P 1 P 0. Upon substituting ths xprssions into (4) (5) and nglcting all products of prturbations such as n 1 t u 1 and u 1 x u 1, w gt a st of linar quations for th prturbd quantitis: n 1 t + n u 1 0 x = 0, u n 1 0 t = m n 0E 1 1 m E 1 x = n ε 1, 0 P 1 = 3k B T n 1. P 1 x, (6) Th xprssion for P 1 rsults from th spcific hat ratio γ = 3 and from assuming isothrmal background lctrons, P 0 = k B T n 0 (idal gas); s Krur s book [5]. W can now liminat E 1, P 1 and u 1 from (6) to gt ( ) t 3v t x + ω p n 1 = 0, (7) with vt = k B T /m and ω p givn by (11) as bfor. Finally, w look for plan-wav solutions of th form A = A 0 xp{i(ωt kx)}, so that our drivativ oprators ar transformd as follows: t iω and ik. Substitution into (7) yilds th Bohm Gross disprsion rlation x ω = ω p + 3k v t. (8) This and othr disprsion rlations ar oftn dpictd graphically on a chart such as that in Fig. 6, which givs an ovrviw of which propagation mods ar prmittd for low- and high-wavlngth limits.. Transvrs wavs To dscrib transvrs lctromagntic (EM) wavs, w nd two additional Maxwll s quations, Faraday s law and Ampèr s law, which w will introduc proprly latr; s Eqs. (38) and (39). For th 9
Fig. 6: Schmatic illustration of disprsion rlations for Langmuir, lctromagntic and ion-acoustic wavs tim bing, it is hlpful to simplify things by making us of our prvious analysis of small-amplitud longitudinal wavs. Thrfor, w linariz and again apply th harmonic approximation t iω to gt whr th transvrs currnt dnsity is givn by E 1 = iωb 1, (9) B 1 = µ 0 J 1 + iε 0 µ 0 ωe 1, (30) J 1 = n 0 u 1. (31) This tim w look for pur EM plan-wav solutions with E 1 k (s Fig. 7) and also assum that th group and phas vlocitis ar larg nough, v p, v g v t, so that w hav a cold plasma with P = n 0 k B T 0. Fig. 7: Gomtry for lctromagntic plan-wav analysis Th linarizd lctron fluid vlocity and corrsponding currnt ar thn u 1 = E iωm 1, J 1 = n 0 iωm E 1 σe 1, whr σ is th AC lctrical conductivity. By analogy with dilctric mdia (s,.g., Rf. [7]), in which Ampèr s law is usually writtn as B 1 = µ 0 t D 1, by substituting (3) into (39) on can show that D 1 = ε 0 εe 1, (3) with ε = 1 + σ iωε 0 = 1 ω p ω. (33) 10
From (33) it follows immdiatly that with η ε = ck ω = ( 1 ω p ω ) 1/, (34) ω = ω p + c k. (35) Th abov xprssion can also b found dirctly by limination of J 1 and B 1 from Eqs. (9) (3). From th disprsion rlation (35), also dpictd in Fig. 6, a numbr of important faturs of EM wav propagation in plasmas can b dducd. For undrdns plasmas (n n c ), phas vlocity v p = ω k c 1 + ω p ω > c ; group vlocity v g = ω k c 1 ω p ω < c. In th opposit cas of an ovrdns plasma, whr n > n c, th rfractiv indx η bcoms imaginary and th wav can no longr propagat, bcoming vanscnt instad, with a dcay lngth dtrmind by th collisionlss skin dpth c/ω p ; s Fig B y E z n 0 /n c Fild intnsity E (0) = E 0 nc /n kx c/ p Fig. 8: Elctromagntic filds rsulting from rflction of an incoming wav by an ovrdns plasma slab.3 Nonlinar wav propagation So far w hav considrd purly longitudinal or transvrs wavs; linarizing th wav quations nsurs that any nonlinaritis or coupling btwn ths two mods is xcludd. Whil this is a rasonabl approximation for low-amplitud wavs, it is inadquat for dcscribing strongly drivn wavs in th rlativistic rgim of intrst in plasma acclrator schms. Th starting point of most analyss of nonlinar wav propagation phnomna is th Lorntz quation of motion for th lctrons in a cold (T = 0) unmagntizd plasma, togthr with Maxwll s quations [5,6]. W mak two furthr assumptions: (i) that th ions ar initially singly chargd (Z = 1) and ar tratd as an immobil (v i = 0), homognous background with n 0 = Zn i ; (ii) that thrmal motion can b nglctd, sinc th tmpratur rmains low compard to th typical oscillation nrgy in th lasr fild (v osc v t ). Th starting quations (in SI units) ar thn as follows: p t + (v )p = (E + v B), (36) 11
whr p = γm v and γ = (1 + p /m c ) 1/. E = ε 0 (n 0 n ), (37) E = B t, (38) c B = n ε v + E 0 t, (39) B = 0, (40) To simplify mattrs, w first assum a plan-wav gomtry lik that in Fig. 7, with th transvrs lctromagntic filds givn by E L = (0, E y, 0) and B L = (0, 0, B z ). From Eq. (36), th transvrs lctron momntum is thn simply p y = A y, (41) whr E y = A y / t. This rlation xprsss consrvation of canonical momntum. Substituting E = φ A/ t and B = A into Ampèr s quation (39) yilds c ( A) + A t = J ε 0 φ t, whr th currnt is givn by J = n v. Now w us a bit of vctorial wizardry, splitting th currnt into rotational (solnoidal) and irrotational (longitudinal) parts, J = J + J = Π + Ψ, from which w can dduc (s Jackson s book [7]) that J 1 c φ t = 0. Finally, by applying th Coulomb gaug A = 0 and v y = A y /γ from (41), w obtain A y t c A y = µ 0 J y = n ε 0 m γ A y. (4) Th nonlinar sourc trm on th right-hand sid contains two important bits of physics: n = n 0 + δn, which coupls th EM wav to plasma wavs, and γ = 1 + p /m c, which introducs rlativistic ffcts through th incrasd lctron inrtia. Taking th longitudinal componnt of th momntum quation (36) givs d dt (γm v x ) = E x A y m γ x. W can liminat v x using th x componnt of Ampèr s law (39): 0 = ε 0 n v x + E x t. And th lctron dnsity can b dtrmind via Poisson s quation (37): n = n 0 ε 0 E x x. Th abov (closd) st of quations can in principl b solvd numrically for arbitrary pump strngths. For th momnt, w simplify things by linarizing th plasma fluid quantitis. Lt n n 0 + n 1 +, 1
v x v 1 + v +, and nglct products of prturbations such as n 1 v 1. This lads to ( t + ω ) p E γ x = ω p 0 m γ0 x A y. (43) Th driving trm on th right-hand sid is th rlativistic pondromotiv forc, with γ 0 = (1 + a 0/) 1/. Som solutions of Eq. (43) ar shown in Fig. 9, for low- and high-intnsity lasr pulss. Th proprtis of th waks will b discussd in dtail in othr lcturs, but w can alrady s som obvious qualitativ diffrncs btwn th linar and nonlinar wav forms; th lattr ar typically charactrizd by a spikd dnsity profil, a sawtooth lctric fild, and a longr wavlngth I lasr 3 I lasr wak amplitud E n wak amplitud 1 0 E n k p x k p x Fig. 9: Wakfild xcitation by a short-puls lasr propagating in th positiv x dirction in th linar rgim (lft) and nonlinar rgim (right). Th coupld fluid quations (4) and (43) and thir fully nonlinar countrparts dscrib a wid rang of nonlinar lasr plasma intraction phnomna, many of which ar tratd in th latr lcturs of this school, including plasma wak gnration, blow-out rgim lasr slf-focusing and channlling, paramtric instabilitis, and harmonic gnration. Plasma-acclratd particl bams, on th othr hand, cannot b tratd using fluid thory and rquir a mor sophisticatd kintic approach, usually assistd by numrical modls solvd with th aid of powrful suprcomputrs.
