3 Introducing Physical Science for Grades 4 6 Introduction Introduction The level of achievement by United States students on science testing is a national concern. When compared to students on an international basis, students in the United States do not score well on science concepts. This is particularly true as students progress into the middle school years and beyond. The emphasis of Introducing Physical Science for Grades 4 6 is to help students in grades four, five, and six explore basic areas of physical science in preparation for the middle school years and beyond It is in grades four, five, and six that students begin to develop a more in-depth understanding of physical science concepts. In addition to the major physical science concepts that are presented, skills in interpreting and analyzing graphed data are emphasized. The science content and activities in Introducing Physical Science for Grades 4 6 have been developed to meet many of the recommendations from the National Science Educational Standards, including Properties and Changes of Properties in Matter, Motions and Forces, and Transfer of Energy. Mathematics activities have been included to support the National Science Standard recommendation that mathematics instruction should be incorporated with science content. Internationally, the metric system is used most commonly. Therefore, math activities stress the use of metrics in solving problems. A review of physical science standards from many states has been incorporated in the physical science exercises in Introducing Physical Science for Grades 4 6. As students progress into grades four, five, six, and beyond, reading science content becomes increasingly problematic. There is a large increase in the number of words with three or more syllables. Those students who are skillful in reading these multisyllabic words can read for comprehension without the challenge of word pronunciation. For Chapters II through XVI in Introducing Physical Science for Grades 4 6, words with three or more syllables are identified. Reading exercises are developed for each chapter using the words with three or more syllables. Learning to read these words and understand their meanings increases the readibility level for all students. The exercises have been developed to be used with guidance from teachers, tutors, and teacher aides, or they can be used as homework assignments. 1
