Energy of the Universe in Bianchi-type I Models in Møller s Tetrad Theory of Gravity arxiv:gr-qc/ v2 7 Sep Introduction Oktay Aydoğdu 1 and Mustafa Saltı 2 Department of Physics, Faculty of Art and Science, Mersin University, 33343/Ciftlikkoy, Mersin-TURKEY s: 1 oktay231@yahoo.com, 2 musts6@yahoo.com Abstract. In this paper, using the energy definition in Møller s tetrad theory of gravity we calculate the total energy of the universe in Bianchi-type I cosmological models which includes both the matter and gravitational fields. The total energy is found to be zero and this result agrees with a previous works of Banerjee-Sen who investigated this problem using the general relativity version of the Einstein energy-momentum complex and Xulu who investigated same problem using the general relativity versions of the Landau-lifshitz, Papapetrou and Weinberg s energy-momentum complexes. The result that total energy of the universe in Bianchi-type I universes is zero supports the viewpoint of Tryon. Keywords: Energy-Momentum; Møller; General Relativity; Teleparallel gravity. PACS numbers: q; Jb; h In both the general theory of relativity and the teleparallel gravity a large number of physicist have devoted considerable attentions to the problem of computing the conserved quantities, such as energy and/or momentum, associated with various space-times. Following Einstein s original pseudo-tensor for energy-momentum many expressions have been introduced in the literature. Einstein s energy-momentum complex, used for calculating the energy in general relativistic system, was followed by many prescriptions, e.g. Møller[1], Papapetrou[2], Landau-Liftshitz[3], Tolman[4], Bergmann-Thomson[5], Qadir-Sharif[6], Weinberg s[7] and the teleparallel gravity versions of Einstein, Bergmann-Thomson, Landau-Liftshitz s[8] and Møller s[9] energy momentum complexes. The energy and momentum prescriptions give meaningful results when the line-element is transformed to the cartesian coordinates. However for the Møller s prescriptions it is not necessary to use Cartesian coordinates. In the literature Virbhadra and his collaborators have considered many space-times and have shown that several energy-momentum complexes give the same and acceptable results[10]. Astrophysics and Space Science 299, issue 3, (2005)
Energy of the Universe in Bianchi-type I Models... 2 Aguirregabiria et al.[11] showed that several energy-momentum complexes give the same result for any Kerr-Shild class metric. Recently, Chang et al.[12] showed that every energy-momentum complex can be associated with a particular Hamilton boundary term, therefore the energy-momentum complexes may also be considered as quasi-local. Tryon[13] suggested that in our universe, all conserved quantities have to vanish. Tryon s big bang model predicted a homogenous, isotropic and closed universe inclusive of matter and anti-matter equally. He also argues that any closed universe has zero energy. The notion of the energy and momentum distributions of the closed universes was opened by an interesting work of Rosen[14] and Cooperstock[15]. Rosen considered a closed homogenous isotropic universe described by a Friedmann-Robertson- Walker(FRW) line element. He used the Einstein energy-momentum complex and found that the total energy is vanishing. This interesting result attracted attention of some general relativists, for example: Johri et al.[16], Banerjee-Sen[17] and Xulu[18]. Johri et al. using the Landau-Liftshitz s energy-momentum complex, found that the total energy of an FRW spatially closed universe is zero at all times. Banerjee-Sen who investigated the problem of an energy of the Bianchi-I type space-times using the Einstein complex, and Xulu who investigated the same problem using the Landau-Lifshitz, Papapetrou and Weinberg s energy-momentum complexes, obtained that the total energy is zero. This result agrees with the studies of Johri et al.. The line element of the Bianchi-I type space-time reduces to the spatially flat FRW line element in a special case. The present paper is organized as follows: In the next section, we give the line element which describes Bianchi-type I universes and in section III, first we introduce the Møller s energy-momentum complex and then using this definition we calculate the total energy of the Bianchi-type I space-time. In the last section, we summarize and discuss our results. Throughout this paper, Latin indices (i, j,...) represent the vector number, and Greek indices (µ, ν,...) represent the vector components. All indices run from 0 to 3. We use convention that G = 1, c = 1 units. 2. Bianchi-type I Cosmological Models The FRW cosmological model has attracted considerable attention in the relativistic cosmology literature. Maybe one of the most important properties of this model is, as predicted by inflation[19, 20, 21], the flatness, which agrees with the observed cosmic microwave background radiation. In the early universe the sorts of the matter fields are uncertain. The existence of anisotropy at early times is a very naturel phenomenon to investigate, as an attempt to clarify among other things, the local anisotropies that we observe today in galaxies, clusters and super-clusters. So, at the early time, it appears appropriate to suppose a geometry that is more general than just the isotropic and homogenous FRW geometry. Even though the universe, on a large scale, appears homogenous and isotropic at the present time, there are no observational data that guarantee in an epoch prior to the recombination. The anisotropies defined above have many possible source; they could be
Energy of the Universe in Bianchi-type I Models... 3 associated with cosmological magnetic or electric fields, long-wave length gravitational waves, Yang-Mills fields[22]. The line element of the Bianchi-type I universe[18] is given as, ds 2 = dt 2 e 2l dx 2 e 2m dy 2 e 2n dz 2 (1) where l, m and n are functions of t alone. The expansion factors e 2l, e 2m and e 2n could be determined via Einstein s field equations. The non-vanishing components of the Einstein tensor G µν ( 8πT µν, where T µν is the energy-momentum tensor) are G 00 = lṁ + ṁṅ + ṅ l (2) G 11 = e 2l (ṁ 2 + ṅ 2 + ṁṅ + m + n) (3) G 22 = e 2m (ṅ 2 + l 2 + ṅ l + n + l) (4) G 33 = e 2n ( l 2 + ṁ 2 + lṁ + l + m) (5) An anisotropic Bianchi type I universe can be considered to be filled with an ideal(non-viscous) fluid which has an equation of state p = ρ(stiff matter-the velocity of sound coincides with the speed of light), where ρ is the energy density and p is the isotropic pressure. For the line element (1), g µν and g µν are defined by g µν = δ 0 µ δ0 ν e2l δ 1 µ δ1 ν ) e2m δ 2 µ δ2 ν e2n δ 3 µ δ3 ν (6) g µν = δ µ 0δ ν 0 e 2l δ µ 1δ ν 1 e 2m δ µ 2δ ν 2 e 2n δ µ 3δ ν 3 (7) The non-trivial tetrad field induces a teleparallel structure on space-time which is directly related to the presence of the gravitational field, and the Riemannian metric arises as g µν = η ab h a µh b ν (8) Using this relation, we obtain the tetrad components: and its inverse is h a µ = δ a 0δ 0 µ + e l δ a 1δ 1 µ + e m δ a 2δ 2 µ + e n δ a 3δ 3 µ (9) h µ a = δ 0 a δµ 0 + e l δ 1 a δµ 1 + e m δ 2 a δµ 2 + e n δ 3 a δµ 3 (10) The line-element given by (1) reduces to the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker line element in a special case. Defining e l = T(t) with l = m = n, and transforming the line element (1) to t, x, y, z coordinates: according to: ds 2 = dt 2 T 2 (t)[dr 2 + r 2 (dθ 2 + sin 2 θdφ 2 )] (11) x = r sin θ cosφ y = r sin θ sin φ z = r cosθ (12)
Energy of the Universe in Bianchi-type I Models Energy in Møller s Tetrad Theory of Gravity The super-potential of Mφller s tetrad theory of gravitation is given by Mikhail et al.[9] as where P τνβ χρσ is with g νβ ρσ U νβ µ = ( g)1/2 Pχρσ τνβ [Φ ρ g σχ g µτ λg τµ γ χρσ (1 2λ)g τµ γ σρχ ] (13) 2κ P τνβ χρσ = δτ χ gνβ ρσ + δτ ρ gνβ σχ δτ σ gνβ χσ (14) being a tensor defined by g νβ ρσ = δν ρ δβ σ δν σ δβ ρ (15) and γ µνβ is the con-torsion tensor given by γ µνβ = h iµ h i ν;ρ (16) where the semicolon denotes covariant differentiation with respect to Christoffel symbols. g is the determinant of the g µν, Φ µ is the basic vector field defined by Φ µ = γ ρ µρ (17) κ is the Einstein constant and λ is the free dimensionless parameter. The energy may be expressed by the surface integral[1] E TG = lim U r 0 0α n αds (18) r=constant here n α is the unit three-vector normal to the surface element ds. Using the Christoffel symbols which are defined by Γ α µν = 1 2 gαβ ( µ g αν + ν g αµ β g µν ) (19) we obtain the following non-vanishing components of Christoffel symbols. Γ 0 11 = le 2l, Γ 0 22 = ṁe2m, Γ 0 33 = ṅe2n Γ 0 01 = Γ 0 10 = l, Γ 0 02 = Γ 0 20 = ṁ, Γ 0 03 = Γ 0 30 = ṅ (20) Taking the results which are given by (9) and (10) into equation (16) we get the nonvanishing components of γ µνβ as: γ 101 = γ 011 = le 2l γ 202 = γ 022 = ṁe 2m γ 303 = γ 033 = ṅe 2n (21) Using this result, we find following non-vanishing component of basic vector field: Φ 0 = l + ṁ + ṅ (22) From equation (13) with the results which are given by equations (21) and (22) we find the required components of super-potential of Møller s are vanishing. Substituting from this value into equation (18) we get E = 0 (23) This result agrees with the previous works of Banerjee-Sen[17] and Xulu[18], and supports the viewpoint of Tryon[13].
Energy of the Universe in Bianchi-type I Models Final Remarks The localization of energy-momentum in the general theory of relativity and teleparallel gravity has been very exciting and interesting; however, it has been associated with some debate. Recently, some researchers have shown interest in studying the energy content of the universe in various models. Rosen and Johri et al. considered Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz complexes respectively, studied the total energy of a closed universe described by FRW line-element and found that to be zero. Furthermore, Banerjee-Sen and Xulu who investigated the problem of the Bianchi type I universes, using the general relativity versions of Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz complexes found that the total energy of this model is vanishing. The main intention of the present paper was to obtain total energy of the universe in Bianchi-type I model by using the Møller s tetrad theory of gravitation. We found that the total energy and momentum components have zero net value. Therefore, we extended the investigations of Banerjee-Sen and Xulu with alternative gravity versions of Møller s complexes. Also, we note that the result that total energy of the universe in Bianchi-type I universe is zero supports the opinion of Tryon. References [1] C. Møller, Ann. Phys. (NY) 4, 347 (1958); C.
