On the Approxate Asyptotc Statstcal Independence of the Peranents of 0- Matrces arxv: v2 ath.co 3 Sep 207 Paul Federbush Departent of Matheatcs Unversty of Mchgan Ann Arbor, MI, Septeber 5, 207 Abstract We consder the enseble of n n 0- atrces wth all colun and row sus equal r. We gve ths enseble the unfor weghtng to construct a easure E. We now fro wor of Wanless and Pernc that E per A N = E per A +O /n 4 A In ths paper we prove E per A N = E per A +O /n 2 A2 where E s the easure constructed on the enseble of n n atrces wth non-negatve nteger entres realzed as the su of r rando perutaton atrces. E s often used as an approxaton to E. We have coputer evdence for E per A N = E per A +O /n 4 A3 Introducton We consder the enseble of n n 0- atrces whose row and colun sus all equal r. We defne the unfor easure n ths enseble, callng t E. We now fro the wor of Wanless 5 and Pernc 2 that E per A N = E per A +O /n 4. We let E be the easure on n n atrces wth non-negatve nteger entres, constructed as the unfor easure on a su of r rando perutatons of n objects. We here prove E per A N = E per A +O /n 2.2
In Secton 8 we present algebrac rgorous coputer coputatons for soe cases wth N = 2,r = 2 and N = 2,r = 3 supportng E per A N = E per A +O /n 4.3 These sae calculatons show.3 s not true wth O /n 4 replaced by O /n 5. E s often used as an approxaton to E. In and 4 certan aesthetc relatons see to hold n the sae for for E and E expectatons. Slarly we beleve eq. presages the truth of eq.3. However Secton 7 has soe results that ay cause one soe hestaton. We brefly consder the Bernoull rando atrx enseble where each entry ndependently has a probablty p = r/n of beng one, and s zero otherwse. We let E B be the assocated easure. E B s a less worthy approxaton to E, and followng along the lnes of the calculaton of ths paper t s not dffcult to show f one replaces E n eq.2 by E B the resultng relaton does not hold. In a future paper I plan to relate eq. to graph postvty, 3. In partcular we plan to use these equatons to prove a wea for of the postvty of d, see Secton II of 3. It was a study of such graph postvty that got e nvolved wth the conjecture of ths paper. One can only apprecate the agc of eq., or eq.2, by seeng the coplcated calculatons and cancellaton nvolved n the proofs. We do not have any understandng why the necessary cancellatons tae place! The readerwll be forcedto ebed hselforherselfn the worldof to followdevelopents wthn. But better yet, fnd another way to attac the study of ths conjecture! A fnal note before plungng nto the calculaton, s the observaton that both the conjecture of ths paper, and the coputaton n, can be vewed as an asyptotc statstcal ndependence of the peranents of 0- atrces. 2 The Strategy We depend on the reader beng falar wth the frst fve pages of. In that paper one studes a product of two peranents, here we deal wth a product of N peranents, but the deas are the sae. A sngle peranent per A, we vew as a su of ters, n 2! such, each ter a product of entres, per A we vew as a su of ultters, each ultter a product ofn subters. Gvenafxedultter, let < j N, andlooatthesubtersandj. Eachentryn the j subter sn class,2,3,4,or5wth respect tothe subter, n the language N of. InthspaperwestudythosetypesofulttersntheexpansonofE per A that contrbute a value larger than O /n 2 N E per A. More exactly, the su of all the ultters of the excluded types s bounded by O /n 2 N E per A. The result s that we need consder ultters that have at ost one par < j of subters wth one entry of subter j that s n class other than class to the subter. In other words, of all the N j= j entres n the ultter we consder those that have at ost two that share a row or a colun! In the followng sectons we wll treat each of the types of ultters that ght contrbute to a /n correcton n eq.2: only class entres, a sngle class 2 entry, a sngle class 3 or class 4 entry. Loosely speang, as s easy to beleve, each te two entres share a row or a colun one loses a power of n. 2
3 Pure Class Multters We frst consder the ultters where no two entres share a row or a colun. In the factor +O /n 2 n eq.2, these ultters gve rse to the, as well as O/n correctons canceled to order /n 2 by contrbutons of the other type ultters. We wrte down the exact expresson for E per A, whch we call I. I = N =,, = 2 n n! r!!,!,r! n,! 3. II s then the contrbuton of all pure class ultters to E N per A. II = n! r N =,, = n t< t We now tae all the sus out of the ters I and II wrtng 2!!,!,r! n t t,! 3.2 I = I 3.3 II = II 3.4 where I and II are the ernels of the sus. We then wrte II I = II I = II I I where II I = n!rn N n 2 t< = t n 2 = r n t t,! r = n,! = e α 3.7 To evaluate α we turn to the lea n the appendx, notng that to calculate the /n ters we need only eep the frst ter on the rght sde of eq A7. Ths yelds up to O /n 2. α = 2 t2 2n t< t t + 2 t,, t or, wth soe thought α = 4 2n t< t +2 t,, t< 3.9 3
In general we wrte a = b to ean a = b+o/n. Substtutng bac nto eq 3.5 II I = I α 3.0 To copute the rght sde of eq 3.0 up to n I we can approxate I as follows I =,!,r! n 3. Snce l n = = l n = N n! 2 n! r n! 2 n,! { N n,! n n! n n n! n! 2 } = 3.4 where n fact each of the expressonsn bracetsn eq 3.3 approaches wth n gong to nfnty. So fnally II I = N = n,!,r! 4 2n t< t +2 We now use eq A2 fro the appendx to arrve at our fnal result or II I n r = 4! 2n = n r II I =! = 4 2n t< t< t +2 t,, t< t< t r r t 2r +IO /n Alternatvely we could avod the dscusson fro eq 3. to eq 3.7, gong drectly fro 3.0 to II I = I 4 t 2n 2r +IO /n t< usng,, = 2 n n! r!!,!,r! n,,j = r that follows fro the syetry of the r colors. 4
4 A Sngle Entry of Class 2 N We now study the contrbuton to E per A of ultters wth all entres but one of class and the sngle other entry of class 2. We su over the color s of ths entry, the subter j t s n, and the subter t s n class 2 relatve to. We let ths contrbuton be called III. III = j n n! r t< 2 t!! s,!,r! <j N =j+ = j, j, = j n t,, =,, = n t<j t j 2 j! j! j,! j,r! n t< 2 t +!!,!,r! t,!,s 4. The fnal,s represents the choce of whch entry of color s n subter agrees wth the entry n subter j. In subter j there are just j entres to be sued over once the class 2 entry has been selected. We wrte 4. as we wll use Q j later = Q j n t,,s 4.2 s t and here also defne II j <j III = s II j,s 4.3 <j where II j s exactly II of eq 3.2 wth j replaced by j. We now use the arguent as n eq to wrte II j N =,!,r! n j,! j,r! nj 4.4 = j,, = j, j, = j =I j by eq A. fro the appendx. Substtutng nto eq 4.3 we get III = I j,s s <j =I <j j
equvalently III = I <j j +O /n A Sngle Class 3 or Class 4 Entry We calculate the contrbuton of the su of these two types of ultters, ultplyng by 2 the contrbuton of the ultters wth a sngle class 3 entry. We let IV be the su of these two types. We specfy all the class entres n the ultter and at the last choce select the sngle class 3 entry, arrvng at IV = 2 Q j,a n t + n t,! 5. a,b <j t t see eq 4.2 The 2 s for the su of the two classes, b s the color of the class 3 or class 4 entry, a s the color of the entry n subter that shares a row or colun wth ths entry.,a selects the color a entry n subter sharng the row or colun, n t t + selects the colun row for the class 3 class 4 entry. IV = 2r j I 5.2 <j r arses choosng the color of the class 3 or 4 entry. Fnally IV = 2r <j 6 Sung the Ters I j rn +O /n Fro eq 3.7 we get II I = <j I 2 j 6. n 2r Fro eq 4.6 we have and fro eq 5.3 we have III = I <j IV = 2r <j j 6.2 j I 6.3 rn Therefore II +III +IV = I 6.4 We rear to the reader that a sngle class 5 entry aes no contrbuton to order /n. If one loos at the detals of the coputatons of ths paper addressed for gettng out correctons to order /n, one can see how coplex t wll be to get the correctons to order /n 2. We have used nteger arthetc coputer coputatons for N = 2,r = 2 and r = 3, to help chec the correctness of analytc expressons. 6
7 A Cautonary Calculaton Whereas we have referred to a couple nstances where E expectatons have the sae behavor as E expectatons, we here present a blatant contrast. In 2, eq and Appendx A, there s presented an expanson n descendng powers of n Eper A = an +bn +cn a = r /! 7.2 b = r /! r c = r /! r r 2 M. Pernc has shown e how to alternatvely derve these equatons usng the forals of 4, assung Conjecture theren. It s easy to chec that the correspondng expanson for E per A agrees n the frst two ters, but not n the thrd, checed by coputer to soe hgh order. We tae ths expresson for E per A as establshed. Ths s a clash to the sae power of n as pursued n the sequel, paper II. 8 Soe Coputer Calculatons We note that by the result of ths paper.2 and the expressons of Secton 7 one has 7.4 E per A = cn 8. where c depends on r and the. Slarly fro. and fro the expressons fro Secton 7, one has E per A = cn 8.2 wth the value of c the sae n 8. and 8.2. We have coputed exactly, n the case r = 3 and N = 2 E per Aper 2 A E per AE per 2 A 8.3 for all, 2 < 7 and found that the hghest non-vanshng ter n the expanson n powers of n was We have done the sae for r = 2 and N = 2 for all, 2 < 9 and found that the hghest non-vanshng ter n the expanson n powers of n was For r=2 the expectatons n 8.3 are polynoals n n, for r=3 ratonal functons of n. We wll study expectatons of per 5 Aper 3 A as an exaple. We are worng wth an N = 2 exaple so that we can copute the E expectaton exactly, and wth r = 2. It s possble to study expectatons n the E easure for N > 2, but at a treendous ncrease n coputatonal coplexty. We defne Q E per 5 Aper 3 A 8.4 Q2 E per 5 Aper 3 A E per 5 AE per 3 A 8.5 7
For Q we have an exact expresson Q =6/45n 8 04/5n /5n /5n /5n /5n /45n /5n+448 Slarly we have an exact expresson for Q2 Q2 = 8/3n 4 00/3n /3n 2 920/3n Appendx = =! r! = x + +x r! = r x!! r! = x d x + +x r = dx! x r r!
