AIT TALEB AND E. HANEBALY (Communicated by Dale Alspach) Abstract. In this paper we present a fixed point theorem of Banach type in modular space. We give an application of this result to a nonlinear integral equation in Musielak-Orlicz space.. Introduction It is well known that one of the standard proofs of Banach s fixed point theorem is based on Cantor s theorem in complete metric spaces [3, 4]. To this end, using some convenient constants in the contraction assumption, we present a generalization of Banach s fixed point theorem in some classes of modular spaces, where the modular is s-convex, having the Fatou property and satisfying the 2 -condition. As an application we study the existence of a solution for an integral equation of Lipschitz type in a Musielak-Orlicz space. We begin by recalling some basic concepts of modular spaces; for more information, we refer to the books by Musielak [8] and Kozlowski [7]. Definition -1. Let X be an arbitrary vector space over K (= R or C). a) A functionnal ρ : X [, + ] is called modular if: i) ρ(x) = x =. ii) ρ(αx) =ρ(x)forα Kwith α =1, x X. iii) ρ(αx + βy) ρ(x)+ρ(y)ifα, β,α + β =1, x, y X. b) If iii) is replaced by: iii ) ρ(αx + βy) α s ρ(x) +β s ρ(y)forα, β,α s + β s =1withans ], 1], then the modular ρ is called an s-convex modular; and if s =1,ρis called convex modular. c) A modular ρ defines a corresponding modular space, i.e. the space X ρ given by X ρ = {x X ρ(λx) as λ }. Remarks. 1) Note that in general there is no reason to expect the subadditivity of a modular ρ. Nevertheless, in view of iii) from Definition -1 the inequality ρ(x + y) ρ(2x)+ρ(2y) holds. HANEBALY 2) If ρ is convex modular, the modular space X ρ can be equipped with a norm called the Luxemburg norm defined by: x ρ =inf{α>; ρ( x α ) 1}. 3) As a classical example, we would like to mention the Musielak-Orlicz space denoted by L ϕ [8] and the modular function space denoted by L ρ [7]. Definition -2. Let X ρ be a modular space. a) A sequence (x n ) n in X ρ is said to be: i) ρ-convergent to x if ρ(x n x) as n +. ii) ρ-cauchy if ρ(x n x m ) as n and m +. b) Xρ is ρ-complete if any ρ-cauchy sequence is ρ-convergent. c) A subset B X ρ is said to be ρ-closed if for any sequence (x n ) n B with x n x, thenx B. Bρ denotes the closure of B in the sense of ρ. d) A subset B X ρ is called ρ-bounded if: δ ρ (B) =sup x,y B ρ(x y) < +, where δ ρ (B) is called the ρ-diameter of B. e) We say that ρ has the Fatou property if: ρ(x y) lim inf ρ(x n y n ) whenever x n ρ x and yn ρ y. f) ρ is said to satisfy the 2 -condition if: ρ(2x n ) as n + whenever ρ(x n ) as n +. I. Fixed point theorem I-1. Theorem I-1. Let X ρ be a ρ-complete modular space. Assume that ρ is an s-convex modular satisfying the 2 -condition and having the Fatou property. Let B be a ρ-closed subset of X ρ and T : B B a mapping such that: (*) c, k R + : c>max(1,k),ρ(c(tx Ty)) k s ρ(x y) x, y B. Then T has a fixed point. Remarks. 1) It is natural to introduce the constants c and k in the assumption of strict contraction in modular spaces. Note also that Theorem I-1 and its proof become more simple in the particular case where s =1(ρ is convex ) and c = 2 >k>; see [1]. 2) The contraction (*) in Theorem I-1 is also true for any constant c such that 1 <c c: ρ(c (Tx Ty)) = ρ( c c c(tx Ty)) cs c s ρ(c(tx Ty)) ks ρ(x y) where k = c c k<c,since k c <1.

A FIXED POINT THEOREM 2337 I-2. Proof of Theorem I-1. 1 st step: The proof of Theorem I-1 is based on the next result which is the modular formulation of Cantor s theorem: Theorem I-2. Let X ρ be a ρ-complete modular space. Let (F n ) n be a decreasing sequence of nonempty, ρ-closed subset of X ρ with δ ρ (F n ) as n +. Then n F nis reduced to one point. The proof of this result uses the same ideas as in complete metric spaces and it suffices to replace the distance by the modular ρ. 2 nd step. Let (ɛ n ) n be a decreasing sequence of positive numbers such that ɛ n as n +, and consider the sets defined by: M ɛn = {x B ρ(l(x Tx)) ɛ n }, where L =max{c, 2α} and α is the s-conjugate of c, i.e. 1 c s + 1 α s = 1. Then the sequence (M ɛn ) has the following property: 1)M ɛn, n. We assume without any loss of generality that: x B such that ρ(x Tx) < + ;thenforp N we have: ρ(c(t p+1 x T p x)) k s ρ(t p x T p 1 x) = k s ρ( 1 c c(t p x T p 1 x)) ( ks c s )ks ρ(t p 1 x T p 2 x), and by induction we deduce: ρ(c(t p+1 x T p x)) ( k c )s(p 1) ρ(x Tx). Since k c < 1, we have ρ(c(t p+1 x T p x)) as p +. Thusby( 2 ) ρ(l(t p+1 x T p x)) as p +. Hence: q N such that ρ(l(t q+1 x T q x)) ɛ n. Then: y = T q x M ɛn. 2)M ɛn is ρ-closed. Let (x p ) be a sequence in M ɛn. Assume that (x p ) p is ρ-convergent to x X ρ, (x p ) p B and B is ρ-closed; it follows that x B. ρ(x p x) as p +, by( 2 ),ρ(l(x p x)) as p +. On the other hand ρ(c(tx p Tx)) k s ρ(x p x) k s ρ(l(x p x)); then ρ(c(tx p Tx)) as p +. Again by ( 2 ) ρ(l(tx p Tx)) as p +. The Fatou property implies that: ρ(l(tx x)) lim inf ρ(l(tx p x p )) ɛ n. Therefore x M ɛn and hence M ɛn is ρ-closed. 3) δ ρ (M ɛn ) as n +. Let x, y M ɛn ;wehave: ρ(x y)=ρ( α(x Tx) α + c(tx Ty) c + α(ty y) ) α

2338 A. AIT TALEB AND E. HANEBALY where Then Hence, α s = cs c s 1 1 α s ρ(α(x Tx)+α(Ty y)) + 1 c s ρ(c(tx Ty)) s ρ(2α(x Tx)) + αs 2 s α s ρ(2α(ty y)) + 1 c s ρ(c(tx Ty)) 1 2 s α s (ρ(l(x Tx)) + ρ(l(ty y))) + 1 c s ρ(c(tx Ty)). and we deduce that and δ ρ (M ɛn )= ρ(x y) 1 2 s α s 2ɛ n + ks ρ(x y). cs ρ(x y) 1 2 s α s 2ɛ n c s c s k s sup ρ(x y) ɛ n 2 1 s cs 1 x,y M ɛn c s k s, δ ρ (M ɛn ) asn +. 4) (M ɛn ) is decreasing. This is an immediate consequence of the fact that (ɛ n ) is decreasing. It follows that the conditions of Cantor s theorem are satisfied and hence we have: n M ɛ n = {x }. But x M ɛn n ρ(l(x Tx )) ɛ n asn + Tx = x. Remark. We are unable to prove whether the conclusion of Theorem I-1 is true if we have c =1and<k<1. To this end, recall the following results by Khamsi-Kozlowski-Reich: Theorem I-3 ([5]). Let ρ be a modular function satisfying the 2 -condition and let B be a. ρ -closed subset of L ρ. T : B B is a mapping such that: <k<1such that ρ(tf Tg) kρ(f g) f,g B. Then: T has a fixed point if one of the following assumptions is satisfied: i) f B;sup n (2T n f ) <. ii) B is ρ-bounded. If ii) is satisfied, the fixed point is unique. Note also that the modular ρ in Theorem I-3 has the Fatou property and the 2 -condition as in Theorem I-1. Also by ( 2 )wehave:bis ρ-closed B is. ρ -closed. On the other hand the strict inequality (*) in Theorem I-1 implies the inequality of Theorem I-3 ρ(tx Ty)=ρ( 1 c (c(tx Ty))) 1 ks ρ(c(tx Ty)) ρ(x y). cs cs Consequently with some reinforced assumptions in Theorem I-1, namely the s- convexity of ρ and the strict contraction (*), we prove the existence of a fixed point

A FIXED POINT THEOREM 2339 for T without restrictive conditions concerning the domain of T : i) or ii) in Theorem I-3. The following example shows that Theorem I-1 can be more appropriate for applications. II. Application II-1. General frame. Consider the following integral equation: (I) u(t) =exp( t)f+ exp(s t)tu(s)ds, where: i) T : B B with B a ρ-closed, convex subset of a Musielak-Orlicz space L ϕ satisfying the 2 -condition. ii) T is ρ-lipschitz: >,ρ(tu Tv) ρ(u v) u, v B. iii) f B. Theorem II-1. Under these conditions, for all A>the integral equation (I) has a solution u C ϕ = C([,A],L ϕ ). C ϕ is the modular space of continuous mappings from [,A] into L ϕ By iterative techniques, Khamsi [6] has shown this result under supplementary conditions: B is ρ-bounded and T is ρ-lipschitz with constant =1. To delete all restrictive assumptions on the Lipschitz constant we introduce the space C ϕ equipped with a convenient modular. Our method follows the standard technique of the resolution of differential equations or integral equations of Lipschitz type in Banach spaces. See Deimling [2, p. 39]. II-2. Functional frame: The modular space C ϕ. Definition 2-1. u : I L ϕ,wherei=[,a], is said to be continuous at t I if: for t n I, t n t as n + ρ(u(t n ) u(t )) as n +. Since ρ satisfies the 2 -condition, it is equivalent to: t n t as n + u(t n ) u(t ) ρ as n +. Let C ϕ = C(I,L ϕ ) be the space of all continuons mappings from I =[,A]into L ϕ. Proposition 2-1. Suppose that the modular ρ satisfies ( 2 ),andb L ϕ is a ρ-closed, convex subset of L ϕ. For a let ρ a (u) =sup t I exp ( at)ρ(u(t)) for u C ϕ.then: 1) (C ϕ,ρ a ) is a modular space, and ρ a is a convex modular satisfying the Fatou property and the 2 -condition. 2) C ϕ is ρ a -complete. 3) C ϕ = C(I,B) is a ρ a-closed, convex subset of C ϕ. Proof. 1) i) C ϕ is a real vector space. Let u, v C ϕ,t I.Thenfort n Isuch that t n t as n + we have: ρ( (u + v)(t n) (u + v)(t ) ) ρ(u(t n) u(t )) ρ(v(t n) v(t )).

234 A. AIT TALEB AND E. HANEBALY Hence, ρ( (u+v)(tn) (u+v)(t) 2 ) as n +. And by 2 : ρ((u + v)(t n ) (u + v)(t )) as n +, which implies that (u + v) is continuous at t. Again by 2 ρ(λ(u(t n ) u(t ))) as n + for all λ R; thenλu is also continuous at t. ii) ρ a is well defined. Since ρ satisfies the ( 2 )-condition, the domain of ρ is {f L ϕ,ρ(f)<+ } = L ϕ, and since ρ is convex and. ρ -continuous at it follows that ρ is. ρ -continuous on L ϕ. See Zeidler [9, p. 383]. Consequently for all u C ϕ, ρ a (u) has a meaning. iii) ρ a is a convex modular. This is a simple consequence of the fact that ρ is a convex modular. iv) ρ a satisfies the Fatou property. Let (u n ) n (resp (v n ) n ) be a sequence in C ϕ, ρ a -convergent to u (resp. to v) C ϕ. Then t I, ρ(u n (t) u(t)) as n + and ρ(v n (t) v(t)) as n +. Since ρ satisfies the Fatou property, we have: ρ(u(t) v(t)) lim inf ρ(u n (t) v n (t)) t I, exp ( at)ρ(u(t) v(t)) lim inf exp ( at)ρ(u n (t) v n (t)) lim inf ρ a (u n v n ) and then ρ a (u v) lim inf ρ a (u n v n ). v) ρ a has the ( 2 )-condition. Since ρ satisfies the ( 2 )-condition, one has: ρ a (u n ) as n + t I, exp ( at)ρ(u n (t)) as n + t I, exp ( at)ρ(2u n (t)) as n + ρ a (2u n ) as n +. 2) It is known that (L ϕ,. ρ ) is a Banach space. Then the space (C ϕ,. ρa )is also a Banach space. If (u n ) n is a ρ a -Cauchy sequence in C ϕ,bythe 2 -condition it is. ρa -Cauchy. Hence: u C ϕ such that u n u in (C ϕ,. ρa ). Consequently (u n ) u in (C ϕ,ρ a ). It follows that C ϕ is ρ a -complete. 3) C ϕ = C(I,B)isconvexandρ a-closed. The convexity of C φ and its ρ a-closedness are clearly obtained by the convexity and ρ-closedness of B in L φ. II-3. Proof of Theorem II-1. Define the operator S over C ϕ by: u C ϕ, Su(t)=exp( t)f+ exp (s t) Tu(s)ds, t I. 1 st step: We show that S : C ϕ C ϕ. i) Su is continuous from I into (L ϕ,. ρ ). Let t n,t I with t n t as n +. T is ρ-lipschitz ρ(tu(t n ) Tu(t )) ρ(u(t n ) u(t )). Since u is ρ-continuous, Tu is ρ-continuous at t and by ( 2 ), Tu is. ρ -continuous at t. Hence Su is. ρ - continuous at t. ii) Su(t) B, t I.

A FIXED POINT THEOREM 2341 It is well known that in the Banach space (L ϕ,. ρ ) exp (s t) Tu(s)ds ( exp (s t)ds) co{tu(s), s t} (1 exp ( t)) cob, where cob is the closed convex hull of B in (L ϕ,. ρ ). ButBis convex and ρ-closed; thus, cob = B B ρ = B. Hence, Su(t) exp ( t) B +(1 exp ( t)) B B t I. 2 nd step: For u, v C ϕ and λ>wehave: λ(su(t) Sv(t)) = Lemma 3-1 ([6]). Let x C ϕ and <λ λ exp (s t) (Tu(s) Tv(s))ds. exp A exp(a) 1.Then: exp (at) exp ( t) ρ( λexp (s t) x(s)ds) λ ρ a (x). 1+a Note that in [6] this result was been shown with λ =1anda=. Proof. Let T = {t,t 1,t 2,...,t n } be any subdivision of [,t]. λ(t i+1 t i )exp(t i t) x(t i ) i= is. ρ -convergent, and consequently, ρ-convergent to λ exp (s t) x(s)ds in Lϕ when T =sup{ t i+1 t i,i=,..., n 1} as n +. By Fatou we have: ρ( λ exp (s t) x(s)ds) lim inf ρ( λ(t i+1 t i )exp(t i t)x(t i )). On the other hand: λ(t i+1 t i )exp(t i t) i= i= λexp (s t)ds =(1 exp ( t))λ λ(1 exp ( A)). Since <λ< exp(a) exp(a) 1, it follows that i= λ(t i+1 t i )exp(t i t) 1, and the convexity of ρ implies: λ(t i+1 t i )exp(t i t)x(t i )) λ(t i+1 t i )exp(t i t)ρ(x(t i )) ρ( i= i= = λ(t i+1 t i )exp(t i t)exp(at i )exp( at i )ρ(x(t i )) ( i= λ(t i+1 t i ) exp((1 + a)t i t)ρ a (x) i= λ exp((1 + a)s t) ds) ρ a (x).

2342 A. AIT TALEB AND E. HANEBALY Then: exp (at) exp ( t) ρ( λ exp (s t) x(s)ds) λ ρ a (x). 1+a 3 rd step: exp (at) exp ( t) ρ(λ(su(t) Sv(t))) λ ρ a (Tu Tv). 1+a But ρ a (Tu Tv)=sup exp ( at)ρ(tu(t) Tv(t)) ρ a (u v). t I Then: exp ( at) ρ(λ(su(t) Sv(t)) λ 1+a (1 exp(( t)(1 + a))) ρ a(u v) λ 1+a (1 exp(( A)(1 + a)))ρ a(u v), t I. Hence ρ a (λ(su Sv)) λ 1+a (1 exp(( A)(1 + a))) ρ a(u v). We consider λ, 1 <λ exp(a) exp (A) 1.ThenShas a fixed point if: λ (1 exp (( A)(1 + a))) <λ (1 exp(( A)(1 + a))) < 1. 1+a 1+a The last inequality is satisfied if we take for example a. In the end, by Theorem I-1, S has a fixed point which is a solution of the integral equation (I). References [1] A.
