1 The binry blck-hole dynmics t the third post-newtonin order in the orbitl motion Piotr Jrnowski Institute of Theoreticl Physics, University of Bi lystok, Lipow 1, 15-2 Bi lystok, Polnd Gerhrd Schäfer Theoretisch-Physiklisches Institut, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität, Mx-Wien-Pl. 1, 0773 Jen, Germny rxiv:gr-qc/000305v1 1 Mr 2000 The orbitl dynmics of the binry point-mss systems is mbiguous t the third post-newtonin order of pproximtion. The sttic mbiguity is known to be relted to the difference between the Brill-Lindquist solution nd the Misner-Lindquist solution of the time-symmetric conformlly flt initil vlue problem for binry blck holes. The kinetic mbiguity is noticed to violte in generl the stndrd reltion between the center-of-mss velocity nd the totl liner momentum s demnded by globl Lorentz invrince. I. INTRODUCTION The motion of binry systems is one of the most importnt problems in generl reltivity, prticulrly in view of the future detection of grvittionl wves from such systems. The simplest two-body problem is the one where the components of the system re objects which re s sphericlly symmetric nd point-like s possible. In generl reltivity, those objects re blck holes. In spite of the extension of blck holes, in binry orbit pproximte clcultions of post-newtonin (PN) type (which use expnsions in powers of 1/c, where c denotes the velocity of light), the nstz of Dirc delt functions to describe point-like sources turned out to be very successful up to the 2.5PN pproximtion 1,2], nd t the 3.5PN order of pproximtion too 3]. At the 3PN order, i.e. t the order (1/c 2 ) 3, only prtil success ws chievble ]. Two terms in the binry point-mss clcultions cme out mbiguously: kinetic one, depending on the bodies liner moment squred ], nd sttic one, not depending on the moment 5]. The uthors were ble to show tht the sttic mbiguity is intimtely relted to the fct tht different exct solutions (Brill-Lindquist nd Misner-Lindquist) of the time-symmetric nd conformlly flt initil vlue problem for two blck holes do exist, which t the time revel the emergence of blck holes in binry point-mss clcultions t the 3PN order 5]. In this pper we confront the kinetic mbiguity with the center-of-mss motion nd clim tht it cn be fixed through the stndrd reltion between the center-of-mss velocity nd the totl liner momentum which results from globl Lorentz invrince. We employ the following nottion: x = ( x i ) ( = 1,2; i = 1,2,3) denotes the position of the th point mss in the 3-dimensionl Eucliden spce endowed with stndrd Eucliden sclr product (denoted by dot). We lso define r 12 x 1 x 2, r 12 r 12, n 12 r 12 /r 12 ; stnds here for the Eucliden length of vector. The liner momentum of the th body is denoted by p = (p i ). II. THE GENERALIZED CONSERVATIVE HAMILTONIAN TO 3PN ORDER The post-newtonin pproximtion order 2.5PN (s well 3.5PN) is of purely dissiptive chrcter. Subtrction of the 2.5PN terms from the 3PN Hmiltonin results in the conservtive 3PN Hmiltonin. This Hmiltonin is primrily of higher order s it depends on time derivtives of the positions nd moment of the bodies ]. The conservtive 3PN higher-order Hmiltonin for two-body point-mss systems ws clculted in Ref. ]. We present here the explicit form of this Hmiltonin in the center-of-mss reference frme (where p 1 +p 2 = 0). It is convenient to introduce the following reduced vribles where r x 1 x 2 GM, p p 1 µ = p 2 µ, t t GM, ĤNR HNR µ, (1) µ m 1m 2 M, M m 1 +m 2, ν µ M = m 1 m 2 (m 1 +m 2 ) 2. (2) 1

2 In Eq. (1) the superscript NR denotes non-reltivistic Hmiltonin, i.e. the Hmiltonin without the rest-mss contribution Mc 2. We lso introduce the reduced-time derivtives: ṙ dr d t = d(x 1 x 2 ), ṗ dp dt d t = G dp 1 ν dt = G ν dp 2 dt. (3) The reduced two-point-mss conservtive Hmiltonin up to the 3PN order reds Ĥ NR (r,p,ṙ,ṗ) = ĤN(r,p)+ 1 c 2Ĥ1PN(r,p) where (here r r nd n r/r) + 1 c Ĥ2PN(r,p)+ 1 c 6Ĥ3PN(r,p,ṙ,ṗ), () Ĥ N (r,p) = p2 2 1 r, (5) Ĥ 1PN (r,p) = 1 8 (3ν 1)(p2 ) 2 1 (3+ν)p 2 +ν(n p) 2] 1 2 r + 1 2r2, (6) Ĥ 2PN (r,p) = 1 ( 1 5ν +5ν 2 ) (p 2 ) ( 5 20ν 3ν 2 ) (p 2 ) 2 2ν 2 (n p) 2 p 2 3ν 2 (n p) ] 1 r (5+8ν)p 2 +3ν(n p) 2] 1 r 2 1 (1+3ν) 1 r3, (7) Ĥ 3PN (r,p,ṙ,ṗ) = 1 ( 5+35ν 70ν 2 +35ν 3) (p 2 ) { ( 7+2ν 53ν 2 6ν 3) (p 2 ) 3 +(1 2ν)ν 2 2(n p) 2 (p 2 ) 2 +3(n p) p 2]} 1 r ( 27+10ν +96ν 2) (p 2 ) 2 +6(8+25ν)ν(n p) 2 p 2 (35 267ν)ν(n p) ] 1 r { 800 3(89 315π 2 )ν 7808ν 2] p ( π 2 +8ν ) ν(n p) 2} 1 r (872 63π 2 )ν] 1 r + D(r,p,ṙ,ṗ)+ Ω(r,p). (8) In Eq. (8) D(r,p,ṙ,ṗ) denotes tht prt of the 3PN Hmiltonin Ĥ3PN which depends on the time derivtives ṙ nd ṗ. Its explicit form reds 2

4 The lst term in Eq. (8), Ω(r,p), contins the prmeters which prmetrize the mbiguities of the 3PN Hmiltonin. Its explicit form is Ω(r,p) = ω kinetic p 2 3(n p) 2] ν 2 r 3 +ω ν sttic r, (15) where ω kinetic prmetrizes the kinetic mbiguity, nd the sttic mbiguity is prmetrized by ω sttic. The 3PN higher-order Hmiltonin Ĥ3PN(r,p,ṙ,ṗ), Eq. (8), cn be reduced to usul Hmiltonin depending only on r nd p. Detils of the reduction cn be found in Sec. II of Ref. 6]. III. THE AMBIGUOUS PART OF THE 3PN HAMILTONIAN It ws found in ], 5] tht the mbiguous prt Ω of the 3PN Hmiltonin, Eq. (15), tkes, in non-center-of-mss reference frme nd in non-reduced vribles, the form (G, the Newtonin grvittionl constnt, is put equl to one) Ω(x 1,x 2,p 1,p 2 ) = 1 { m 3 c 6 ω m 2 b sttic b ω m m b kinetic 3 (p ) 2 3(n b p ) 2]}. (16) In the following we shll show how center-of-mss considertions cn impose restrictions onto the kinetic mbiguous term. To mke contct with the intended center-of-mss motion clcultions we trnsform (16) to the Lgrngen level. On this level, Ω ppers s Ω with Ω(x 1,x 2,v 1,v 2 ) = 1 { m 3 c 6 ω m2 b sttic b ω m 3 m b kinetic 3 (v ) 2 3(n b v ) 2]}, (17) where the bodies velocities re given by v = p /m. In view of the reltion between the totl liner momentum P nd the center-of-mss velocity V = Ẋ (X denotes the center-of-mss coordinte) demnded by globl Lorentz invrince, 7], P = H c 2 dx dt, P = p 1 +p 2, (18) where H is the conserved totl energy, H = Mc 2 +H NR, the following expression (which is one of the contributions to P = L/ v 1 + L/ v 2 ) D Ω Ω 1 = ω kinetic v 1 v 2 c 6 b m 3 m b r 3 b v 3(n b v )n b ] (19) hs either to be totl time derivtive (in which cse no restrictions re imposed on Ω) or to be fixed by other terms in Eq. (18) (note tht no sttic mbiguity is involved here). The simplest wy to show tht D is not totl time derivtive is to write it in the form D i = ω kinetic m 1 m 2 (m 2 1 +m2 2 )V j + m 1m 2 (m 1 m 2 ) v j 1 ] 1j 1i, (20) M r 12 (v i denotes the reltive velocity, v i = v i 1 v i 2, nd here, MV i = m 1 v i 1+m 2 v i 2 holds) nd to verge D i over circulr orbit of the reltive motion simply ssuming tht the center-of-mss motion is orthogonl to the reltive motion. The result is (notice tht the reltive motion prt in the Eq. (20) is totl time derivtive) m 1 m 2 < D >= ω kinetic r12 3 (m 2 1 +m2 2 )V. (21) In the center-of-mss frme D i is lwys totl time derivtive. This fits with Ref. 8] where the kinetic mbiguity, in the center-of-mss frme, ws shown to be influenced by coordinte trnsformtions which dditionlly only influence, unimportnt in this context, the sttic potentil t 3PN order.

5 IV. CONCLUSIONS In this pper we hve shown tht the kinetic mbiguity obtined in binry point-mss clcultions t the 3PN order should be getting fixed by center-of-mss motion considertions. The sttic mbiguity ws known to be fixble by referring to e.g., the Brill-Lindquist (ω sttic = 0) or the Misner-Lindquist solution (ω sttic = 1/8). The energy content of the ltter solution is influenced by the topology of the involved non-simply connected 3-spce.
