Rarita Schwiger field ad multi-compoet wave equatio A.E. Kaloshi ad V.P. Lomov Irkutsk State Uiversity The Istitute for System Dyamics ad Cotrol Theory of SB RAS А.Е. Калошин, В.П. Ломов Иркутский государственный университет Институт динамики систем и теории управления СО РАН arxiv: v [hep-ph] 22 Jul 20 Abstract We suggest simple method to solve wave equatio for Rarita Schwiger field without additioal costraits. This method based o use of off-shell projectio operators allows to diagoalize spi-/2 sector of the field. PACS.0.Ef, 0.65.Pm Itroductio It is well kow that stadard approach to descriptio of free higher spi fields i quatum field theory leads to costraits o field compoets see, e.g. []. But for iteractig fields such costraits ca geerate serious problems ad cotradictios. For Rarita Schwiger field [4], which is used for descriptio of spi-/2 particles, there are well-kow issues of such type, see [5,6] ad more geeral discussio i [7]. Oe of the ways to avoid these problems with costraied fields is to choose the special form of iteractio to preserve costraits imposed o free field if it s possible. Aother way is ot to use the costraits at all ad to elimiate the redudat compoets oly after calculatig of the observables. It may be cosidered as some regularizatio. Such a approach was used i [8,9] for the free Rarita Schwiger field with all compoets: besides s = /2 this field cotais two extra s = /2 compoets. It was show that it is possibly to regularly quatize free field [8,9] ad that i this case the iclusio of electromagetic iteractio does ot geerate the old cotradictios [5,6]. Follow this lie i [0,] we costructed the dressed propagator of Rarita Schwiger field with all compoets ad foud the reormalizatio procedure, which guaratees the absece of redudat spi-/2 poles. The essetial poit of our method is the use of the off-shell projectio operators. Here we use this techiques to solve the wave equatio for multi-compoet Rarita Schwiger field. It really gives simple ad trasparet method to solve multi-compoet equatio as compared with cumbersome calculatios i [8,9]. Moreover, i spi-/2 sector it allows to fid explicit form of projectors oto mass states, which solves the diagoalizatio problem. Wave equatio for Rarita Schwiger field We use the actio priciple to get the wave equatios for Ψ µ field compoets. The actio for Rarita Schwiger field is writte i form A = Ld 4 x, L = Ψ µ S µν Ψ ν, Lagrage formulatio of such theories eeds to itroduce auxiliary fields, see, e.g. [2,]
where S µν is a tesor-spior operator. We write dow it i form of Λ-basis decompositio i mometum represetatio see details i Appedix A S µν = 0 i= S i P i µν, 2 with arbitrary coefficiets S i, where bar is used to deote coefficiets of Λ-basis. The wave fuctio Ψ µ ca be expressed as sum of orthogoal compoets Ψ µ = µ Ψ + 2µ Ψ 2 +χ µ, where iµ µ j = δ ij, iµ χ µ = 0, see Appedix. The variatio of the field may be writte i the same form δψ µ = µ δψ + 2µ δψ 2 +δχ µ ad δl is δl = δ Ψ µ S µν Ψ ν +δ Ψ 2 2µ S µν Ψ ν +δ χ µ S µν Ψ ν +h.c.. Cosiderig theδψ i,δχ µ to be idepedet, after some algebra we obtai system of equatios for for Ψ i, i =,2: S Λ + S 4 Λ + Ψ + S7 Λ + S 8 Λ + Ψ 2 = 0, S9 Λ + + S 0 Λ Ψ + S5 Λ + + S 4 6 Λ Ψ 2 = 0, ad sigle equatio for χ µ S Λ + + S 2 Λ χ µ = 0. 5 Here Λ ± are off-shell projectio operators Λ ± = /2± ˆp/W, W = p 2. The equatio 5 is usual Dirac equatio for spi-/2 particle, as it will be see below. The system 4 for Ψ i resembles the system of coupled Dirac equatios. It has o-trivial solutios oly if 2 = 0, where = S S6 S 7 S0, 2 = S 4 S5 S 8 S9. 2 Mass states i spi-/2 sector The system of equatios 4 shows that Ψ i do t have the defiite mass. I order to diagoalize this system we use the projectio represetatio of tesor-spior operator S µν = i λ i Γ iµν, S µν = i λ i Γ iµν, 6 where Γ iµν are projectio operators of S µν ad λ i correspodig eigevalues. I our case it is coveiet to formulate the eigestate problem i terms of projectors. So Γ µν should satisfy the followig requiremets S α µ Γ αν = λγ µν, Γ α iµ Γ jαν = δ ij Γ iµν. 7 It is coveiet to use Λ-basis decompositio for Γ µν to solve this problem, see 2. For spi-/2 sector it is obvious that P ad P 2 are projectio operators ad correspodig eigevalues are S ad S 2. For spi-/2 terms we obtai the followig equatios o eigevalues here E is a uit matrix S S7 dets λ i E = 0, i =,2; S =, S 0 S6 S4 S8 dets 2 λ j E = 0, j =,4; S 2 =. S 9 S5 2 8
The eigevalues are W-depedet ad are exchaged uder the trasformatio W W, amely,2,4, that follows from the property of Λ-basis coefficiets. After some algebra we obtai four projectio operators for spi-/2 terms tesor idices are omitted Γ = S 6 λ P λ 2 λ S 0 P 0 + S λ P 6 λ 2 λ S 7 P 7, 9 Γ = S 5 λ P 4 λ 4 λ S 9 P 9 + S 4 λ P 5 λ 4 λ S 8 P 8, 0 Γ 2 = S 6 λ 2 P λ 2 λ S 0 P 0 + S λ 2 P 6 λ 2 λ S 7 P 7, Γ 4 = S 5 λ 4 P 4 λ 4 λ S 9 P 9 + S 4 λ 4 P 5 λ 4 λ S 8 P 8, 2 correspodig to eigevalues 8. The foud projectio operators allow us to obtai correspodig eigevectors l iµ which have the followig form l µ = l 2µ = l µ = l 4µ = As a result the projectio operators ca be writte as where l µ = γ 0 l µ γ0. The mai property of l iµ is S 7 S0 S 7 S0 + S λ 2 µ S λ S, 7 S 7 S0 S 7 S0 + S λ 2 2 µ S λ 2 S, 4 7 S 8 S9 S 8 S9 + S 4 λ 2 µ S 4 λ S +, 5 8 S 8 S9 S 8 S9 + S 4 λ 4 2 µ S 4 λ S Γ iµν = l iµ liν, 7 l iµ l µ i = Λ, i =,2, ljµ l µ j = Λ+, j =,4. 8 As the result the projectio represetatio 6 for S µν ow takes more cocrete form S µν = S P µν + S2 P 2µν + 4 i= λ i Γ iµν. 9 Now it is possible to write wave fuctio Ψ µ as a sum of orthogoal compoets with defiite mass Ψ µ p = l µ +l µ ϕ p+l 2µ +l 4µ ϕ 2 p+χ µ p, 20 where χ µ l µ i = 0, i =,...,4, so Lagragia is expaded ito L = χ µ S Λ + + S 2 Λ χ µ + ϕ λ Λ + +λ Λ ϕ + ϕ 2 λ4 Λ + +λ 2 Λ ϕ 2. 2 Repeatig the steps i derivig the wave equatio but usig istead of the decompositio 20 we get idepedet motio equatios for ϕ ad ϕ 2 : Λ + λ +Λ λ ϕ = 0, Λ + λ 4 +Λ λ 2 ϕ 2 = 0. 22
Lagragia of massive Rarita Schwiger field To cocretize the above geeral formulae, let s cosider the most geeral form of Lagragia of free Rarita Schwiger field 2 L = Ψ µ S µν Ψ ν, S µν = g µν ˆp M p µ γ ν p ν γ µ +γ µ γ ν M+r+γ µˆpγ ν δ 2 +, which besides mass M has two real parameters r, δ. Eigevalues 8 i this case take the form [ λ,2 = M+2r W+δ 4M 2 +r 2 2M+r+2δW + +δ +δ 2 ] /2, W 2 24 [ λ,4 = M+2r+W+δ 4M 2 +r 2 +2M+r+2δW + +δ +δ 2 ] /2. W 2 It is obvious that the values deped o W ad exchaged whe W W. I geeral case eigevalues λ i W have specific depedece o W, so equatios 22 are ot exactly Dirac equatios. To see it, we ca look agai at system of equatios 4. Ideed, we ca rewrite the system for Ψ i as system of equatios resemblig Dirac equatio [ ] Ψ ˆpK M Ψ = 0 26 with o-diagoal kietic K ad mass M matrices. The Lagragia 2 leads to followig matrices K = M 0 +r 4+δ/2 0 +, W +r 0 0 δ/2 2+r 0 0 M = M W /2δ. 0 r /2δ 0 Note that matrices M ad K are W-depedet. Zeroes of eigevalues are poles for the propagator. The first two terms i 9 have poles i poits M ad M correspodigly. Deote the poles i spi-/2 sector as m, m 2, i.e. λ m = 0, λ 2 m 2 = The above metioed property of eigevalues suggests that m ad m 2 are zeroes of λ ad λ 4 correspodigly. From explicit form of eigevalues 24 oe derive that m,2 = M r δ ± δ r 2 ++4rδ. 28 δ Dirac case correspods to particular choice of parameter r =, whe eigevectors are liear o W: λ,2 = M W+δ ± +δ +δ 2, 29 λ,4 = M +W+δ ± +δ +δ The most geeral Lagragia depeds o four parameters [8, 2, ] but poles positios deped oly o two parameters. So without loosig geerality we use two-parameter Lagragia. Details ca be foud i [2]. 4
For this case equatios 22 have stadard Dirac form ad Lagragia 2 is writte as L = χ µ S Λ + + S 2 Λ + ϕ +δ+ +δ +δ2 ˆp M ϕ + ϕ 2 +δ +δ +δ2 ˆp M ϕ 2. The diagoal form of Lagragia allows to see sig of every cotributios to the eergy. Ideed, comparig with Dirac case, we see that field ϕ gives always positive cotributio to Hamiltoia, while cotributio of ϕ 2 depeds o sig of δ; if δ is egative the Hamiltoia has egative cotributio from ϕ 2. This coclusio differs from coclusio obtaied i work [8]: accordig to it at least oe cotributio from spi /2 compoets to Hamiltoia is egative. Coclusios We foud that with use of Λ-basis 2 ad decompositio of field, it s easy to obtai the wave equatios for differet spi sectors of Rarita Schwiger field. For spi-/2 it is i fact Dirac equatio, as for spi-/2 sector, we have two coupled Dirac-like equatios with o-diagoal kietic ad mass matrices. I geeral case the mass matrix i 26 is eergy depedet MW, oly special choose of parameters leads to costat matrix. We used the most geeral form of wave operator 2 because the above preseted Lagragias 2 do t exhaust all possibilities. For istace, there exist some examples of Rarita Schwiger Lagragias with higher derivatives [4,5]. Λ-basis allows also to fid projectors oto the mass states for spi-/2 sector. Coveiet trick here is the use of projectio represetatio of operator i form of 6, 20. We ca coclude that preseted here methods allow to work effectively with multicompoet field without additioal costraits ad may be useful for other higher spi fields ad more complicated Lagragias. Ackowledgmets This work was supported i part by the program «Developmet of Scietific Potetial i Higher Schools» project 2.2../48, 2../59 ad by the Russia Foudatio for Basic Research project No A Notatios Throughout the work we use the followig otatio. The elemets of Λ-basis are defied as where P = Λ + P /2, P 2 = Λ P /2, P = Λ + P /2, P 4 = Λ P /2, P 5 = Λ + P /2 22, P 6 = Λ P /2 22, P 7 = Λ + P /2 2, P 8 = Λ P /2 2, P 9 = Λ + P /2 2, P 0 = Λ P /2 2, 2 P /2 µν = g µν µ ν µ 2 ν 2 P /2 µν = µ ν, P/2 22 µν = µ 2 ν 2, P /2 2 µν = µ ν 2, P/2 The «uit» vectors µ ad 2µ are defied as followig 2 µν = µ 2 ν. µ = g µα p µp α γ α, p 2 2µ = p µ, iµ µ p 2 j = δ ij, 4 5
ad Λ ± = 2 ± ˆp, W = p W 2. 5 The decompositio over the Λ-basis of S µν is writte as S µν = 0 i= S i P i µν. 6 Refereces [] Weiberg S. The Quatum Theory of Fields. Cambridge Uiversity Press, 995.
