N06/4/PHYSI/HP/ENG/TZ0/XX/M+ This markscheme is confidential and for the exclusive use of examiners in this examination session. It is the property of the International Baccalaureate and must not be reproduced or distributed to any other person without the authorization of IBCA.
5 N06/4/PHYSI/HP/ENG/TZ0/XX/M+ Subject Details: Physics HL Paper Markscheme General A markscheme often has more specific points worthy of a mark than the total allows. This is intentional. Do not award more than the maximum marks allowed for part of a question. When deciding upon alternative answers by candidates to those given in the markscheme, consider the following points: Each marking point has a separate line and the end is signified by means of a semicolon (;). An alternative answer or wording is indicated in the markscheme by a / ; either wording can be accepted. Words in ( ) in the markscheme are not necessary to gain the mark. Words that are underlined are essential for the mark. The order of points does not have to be as written (unless stated otherwise). If the candidate s answer has the same meaning or can be clearly interpreted as being the same as that in the markscheme then award the mark. Mark positively. Give candidates credit for what they have achieved, and for what they have got correct, rather than penalising them for what they have not achieved or what they have got wrong. Remember that many candidates are writing in a second language. Effective communication is more important than grammatical accuracy. Occasionally, a part of a question may require a calculation whose answer is required for subsequent parts. If an error is made in the first part then it should be penalized. However, if the incorrect answer is used correctly in subsequent parts then follow through marks should be awarded. Indicate this with ECF, error carried forward. Units should always be given where appropriate. Omission of units should only be penalized once. Indicate this by U- at the first point it occurs. Ignore this, if marks for units are already specified in the markscheme. Deduct mark in the paper for gross sig dig error i.e. for an error of or more digits. e.g. if the answer is.63: reject.6 accept.63 accept.63 accept.634 reject Indicate the mark deduction by SD-. However, if a question specifically deals with uncertainties and significant digits, and marks for sig digs are already specified in the markscheme, then do not deduct again.
6 N06/4/PHYSI/HP/ENG/TZ0/XX/M+ SECTION A A temperature / C 60 (a) 40 0 (a)(i) time / minutes (a) (i) line in correct position from t = 0 to t = 4min ; [] Allow ± square. reasonable tangent drawn at correct position i.e. at 76 C but allow 70 C 85 C; If tangent position is not acceptable, award [ max] in this section for length of tangent. line length used for tangent at least 8 cm; value ; accuracy value within ; [4] Award [] for value between ± 0% and ± 0% of 0. and [] for value 0. ± 0%. Unit of answer is not required. If the candidate fails to convert to s, then award one of the last two marks for answer in range C min.

Award [0] if the candidate uses s = at and s = cm. (iii) greater distance means higher speed for ball; so distance moved whilst shutter is open is greater; (do not allow so (fractional) error in measuring distance is smaller; "more accurate") [3]
0 N06/4/PHYSI/HP/ENG/TZ0/XX/M+ Part Collisions (a) (i) centripetal force is provided by the cable / the ball is moving along the arc of a circle; [] (350.6 ) centripetal force = ; 5.8 = 40 N ; tension = 40 + ( ) = 3800 N ; [3] Award [0] if v r is not used. E = mc θ ; K K θ = ; [4]
N06/4/PHYSI/HP/ENG/TZ0/XX/M+ B. Part Gravitation (a) centripetal force is provided by the gravitational force; (do not allow equals or is ) mv GMm = ; R R to give GM = Rv (no mark for the answer) [] (b) (i) = (.36 0 ) v v πr T = ; v 4 T = 5. 0 s ; =.67 0 ms ; 4 Award [ max] for use of diameter, answer s. [3] GMm (c) (i) EP = ; r [] if E P decreases, then r decreases; because rv constant, then speed increases; [] Award [0] in if answer states r increases. Award [0] if argument is based on p. e. decreases so k. e. increases, v increases. (d) (e) speed (of object) at surface (of planet) / specified starting point; so that object may move to infinity / escape gravitational field of planet; [] loss in kinetic energy = gain in (gravitational) potential energy; GMm mv = ; R GM but g = ; R hence v= ( gr) (no mark for answer) assumption: e.g. planet is isolated / no friction / no atmosphere etc.; [4] (f) (g) 6 v es = ( ) ; 3 =.3 0 ms ; (.3 0 ) =. 0 T ; T = 840 K ; [] [] (h) atoms have a distribution of speeds / atoms may collide in upper atmosphere; []
