2 In search for New Physics Two ways to search for New Physics: Produce new heavy particles beyond SM, that may have existed in early universe. The production cross-section of those particles are usually very small. Measure the observables/parameters of SM processes (usually rare decay processes). Any significant deviation of these observables from SM prediction will be hint of NP. Studying both processes are important and are complementary to each other I will show the results of B (S) -> m + m -, K (*) m + m - from CMS.
3 SM & NP contributions to B (S) m + m - The golden rare decays: Bd/s μμ Highly suppressed in Standard Model Forbidden at tree level, can only proceed through higher-order loop diagrams - Helicity suppressed, by factor of (mμ/mb) 2 SM process Rate is Cabibbo suppressed Vts(td) 2 History of this search NP controbutions
4 Dimuon spectrum from CMS in ICHEP pp 2011 PbPb
5 Measurement of B (S) m + m - from CMS Bd and Bs signals [blind analysis] Crystal Ball, fixed shape normalization floating combinatorial background first-degree polynomial rare semi-leptonic background (b qμν) fixed shape, floated normalization rare peaking background constrained to expectation Rare decay backgrounds are normalized, channel by channel, to data size. PRL 111 (2013)
6 BF of B (S) m + m - from CMS Bs μμ significance: 4.3 σ Bd μμ significance: 2.0 σ upper limit Results are compatible with SM expectations.
7 B (S) m + m - from CMS + LHCb
8 CMS reach for B (S) m + m - Expectation assuming SM branching fraction and planned detector upgrade Large pileup will affect the detection efficiency, tightening the selection criteria reduce in background, better determination of peaking backgrounds
9 Electroweak penguin decays :B X s l + l - Forbidden at tree level, but allowed via loop diagrams in SM Sensitive to NP through BSM particles in the loop Small branching fraction Observables to compare with SM predictions: Branching fraction, A CP, A FB, P 5, Isospin-asymmetry.
10 B Xl + l Belle, BaBar, CDF
11 Decay parameters for B K *0 m + m - Decay is characterized by 3 angular variables One of the interesting parameter is muon forward-backward asymmetry (A FB ) which is sensitive to new physics dimuon invariant mass
12 What are we looking for? A pair of oppositely charged muons originating from a vertex that is displaced from the nominal pp collision point Background 12
13 k + p - m + m - invariant mass distribution Clear signal in each q 2 bins with yields ranging from 23±6 to 103±12 events ->About 400 events in total PLB 727 (2013) 77
14 Results on dbf/dq 2 and F L Statistical uncertainties are shown by the inner error bars, while the outer ones give the total uncertainties including systematic PLB 727 (2013) 77 No significant deviations with respect to the SM 14
15 Muon forward-backward asymmetry PLB 727 (2013) 77
16 A comparison between experiments Results from LHC experiments are more precise than B-factory LHCb has the most sensitive results No striking evidence of tensions with SM, theory and experimental uncertainties are comparable
17 Observables for B K *0 m + m Some new observables used by LHCb which are free from hadronic uncertainties are There is a local discrepancy of 3.7s in P 5 parameter. More data will either establish/reject this discrepancy.
18 Summary Rare quark decays play an important role in search for New Physics So far there is no conclusive hint for New Physics, however few observables show some deviation from SM -> P 5 in B->K (*) m + m - in LHCb Need more work from theory as well as experimental side. Many more new results will come soon: B->K (*) m + m - (CMS, ATLAS, LHCb),
19 Direct CP violation in B K (*) m + m Direct CP asymmetry is defined to be Better theoretical prediction due to form-factor cancellation in asymmetry. LHCb uses 3fb -1 data arxiv: 1408:0978
20 Test of lepton Universality in B + K + l + l - SM requires the three lepton family to have identical coupling to gauge bosons One can test universality by comparing the results from B + ->K + m + m - and B + ->K + e + e -
