PACIFIC JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS Vol. 25, No. 1, 1968 SOME DUAL SERIES EQUATIONS INVOLVING LAGUERRE POLYNOMIALS JOHN S. LOWNDES In this paper an exact solution is found for the dual series equations (1) Σ C n Γ(a + β + n)l n (a x) = f(x), 0 ^ x < d, ( 2) Σ C - Γ («+ 1 + tι)l,(α a?) = flf(α), d < x < <χ>, w=0 where <* + /3 > 0, 0 < js < 1, L w (α α) = Z#ί(αO is the Laguerre polynomial and f(x) and #(cc) are known functions. In a recent paper Srivastava [3] has solved the equations ( 3 ) Σ {AJΓ(a n)} L n (a x) = f(x), 0^x<d, (4) Σ {Av/Γia + 1/2 + w)}l B («α) =fl-(x), d < x < «, a > -1/2, by considering separately the equations when (a) g(x) = 0, (6) f (#) = 0, and reducing the problem in each case to that of solving an Abel integral equation. Srivastava's equations are a special case of (1) and (2) with β = 1/2 and A n = Γ(a n)γ(a + 1/2 + n)c n. The solution presented in this paper employs a multiplying factor technique which is more direct than the method given in [3] and is similar to that used by Noble [2] to solve some dual series equations involving Jacobi polynomials. 2* In the course of the analysis we shall use the following results. From [l, p. 293(5), p. 405(20)] it is readily shown that ( 5 ) Γ x'iy-xy-i L n {a x)dx = ^(/9)Γ(^ t ί "!" ^ y" +β L Λ a + β ; y) ' Jo Γ(a + β n) where 1 < α, β > 0, and ( 6 ) Γ (x - y)-te~* L n (a x)dx = Γ(l - β)e~ y L n (a + β - 1 y), where 1 > /3, α: + /5 > 0. The orthogonality relation for the Laguerre polynomials is V β- L,(α.τ)L m (α.τ)d.τ ^ ^ o Γ(n + 1) 123

124 JOHN S. LOWNDES where δ mn is the Kronecker delta. 3* Solution of the problem* Multiplying equation (1) by x a (y x) β ~\ equation (2) by (x y)~ β e~ x and integrating with respect to x over (0, y) and (y, o) respectively we find on using the results (5) and (6) Γ 8 ) n + + n ±C n ^ l l ] L n (a + β;y) = ^^SrΓ n=o o (a + β + n) ί ((β) Jo where 0 < y < d, a> -1, /5 > 0, and Σ C n Γ(a n)l n {a + β -1 y) n O (9) e y p Γ(l-β) Jy for d < 2/ < oo, 1 > β 9 a + /3 > 0. If we now multiply equation (8) by y a+β, differentiate with respect to y and use the formula (10) -A_ {x a L n (a x)} = (n + a)x a - 1 L n (a -1 x), we find (11) where 0 < y < d, β > 0, a > -1. The left hand sides of equations (9) and (11) are now identical and using the orthogonality relation (7) we see that the solution of equations (1) and (2) for a + β > 0, 0 < β < 1, is given by where B n (a, β;d) = (V* L»(α + /3-1 Γ(β) Jo (13) i - f y)f(y)dy and i (1 p) Jd (14) F(7/) = -A- \\%y - xy-if{χ)dx, dy Jo

SOME DUAL SERIES EQUATIONS INVOVING LAGUERRE POLYNOMIALS 125 (15) G{y) = ("(»- y)~ β e~* g(x)dx. Jy To obtain the solution of Srivastava's equations (3) and (4) we write β = 1/2, A n = Γ(a n)γ(a + 1/2 + n)c n in (12) and find that A * = Γ{ rn^ W* 6 " L Λ a ~ 1/2 ; V) F y) d V I (JL Δ) Kjd (16),- Ί Jd ' 2 L n (a - 1/2 y)g 1 (y)dyj, for a > 1/2, and where Fy[y) and G x {y) are given by equations (14) and (15) respectively with β 1/2. Comparing the above solution with that obtained in [3] it can be seen that they are in agreement except for the form of the function G λ (y). The limits on the integrals of equations (4.7) and (4.8) in Srivastava's paper are wrong and should read (x, oo) and (u, oo) respectively. When these corrections have been made we find that his term corresponding to G t (y) can be written in the notation of the present paper as (17) - -A. [~(x - y)~ 112 dx (V* g(u)du. dy Jy Jx After inverting the order of integration, carrying out the integration in x and performing the differentiation with respect to y it is found that (17) is equal to G^y). Hence with this simplification Srivastava's solution reduces to that given by equation (16). 4. It is also possible without computing the coefficients C n to find the values of series (1) and (2) in the regions where their values are not specified. We define (1) to have the value h(x), d < x < oo, and (2) to have the value k(x), 0 ^ x < d. (a) Calculation of h(x). Substituting for C n from equation (12) into (1) and interchanging the order of integration and summation we find Γ(β) (18) 1 f + * ^ y (x+β - 1 G(y)S 1 (x f y)dy, d < x < oo, where Γ ( (19) S&, y) = ± w + V L n (a x)l n {a + β -1 y).»=o Γ(a n)

126 JOHN S. LOWNDES Using the results (6) and (7) it is easily shown that (20) S&, y) = evχ^-y)~ β H(x - y), where H(x) is the Heaviside unit function. From equations (18) and (20) we see that h(x) is given by (21) Γ(l - β)x a h(x) = - [ d (x - y)-?f(y)dy Γ(β) Jo v y \ιb y) Γ \Jr\y)ιLy, for d < x < co, where F(y) and G(y) are given by equations (14) and (15). (b) Calculation of k(x). Using the differentiation formula (22) e~* L n (a x) = - -f-{e~ x L n (a-l x)}, dx we may write equation (2) as (23) -f-e-*±c n Γ(a n)l n (a -1 x) dx n=0 = - e~ x k(x), 0 ^ x < d. Substituting for C n and interchanging the order of integration and summation we find e~ x k{x) = -~d^ e \-iwi e " v F{V)S^ (24) Λ r / -, \ y a +β- 1 G(y)S 2 (x, y)dyv, for 0 ^ x < d, and S 2 (.τ, y) ± ^ ^ n-o Γ(a + β + n) (Δo) -j y)dy where the series has been summed using the results (6) and (7). Substituting for S 2 (x, y) in (24) we see that k(x) is given by (26) Γ(β)e~' k(x) = - -A-i λ [" e-(y - xf- 1 tf? F(y)dy dx I I (β) JX

SOME DUAL SERIES EQUATIONS INVOLVING LAGUERRE POLYNOMIALS 127 when 0 ^ x < d. It is perhaps interesting to note that the expressions for the functions k(x) and h(x) do not involve Laguerre polynomials. REFERENCES 1. A.
