Section A Concepts and Skills 150 marks 6 questions Section B Contexts and Applications 150 marks 3 questions Answer all nine questions. Write your answers in the spaces provided in this booklet. You may lose marks if you do not do so. There is space for extra work at the back of the booklet. You may also ask the superintendent for more paper. Label any extra work clearly with the question number and part. The superintendent will give you a copy of the Formulae and Tables booklet. You must return it at the end of the examination. You are not allowed to bring your own copy into the examination. You will lose marks if all necessary work is not clearly shown. Question 7 (45 marks) (a) The graph below can be used as a model to predict the number of bacteria at the end of each week in a contaminated pond, if their growth is not controlled. y is the predicted number of bacteria, in thousands, in the contaminated pond and x is the number of weeks since the number of bacteria was first recorded. (i) Find the increase in the number of bacteria from the end of the first week (x = 1) to the end of the fourth week if their growth rate is not controlled. 10
11 (ii) At the end of the first week, a scientist adds some chemical to the pond. The chemical reduces the growth rate of the bacteria by 80% each week for 5 weeks. The volume of the cuboid is 81 cubic centimetres. (i) Find an expression in x for the height of the cuboid. 15 (b) The pesticide DDT was used in Ireland until its ban in DDT is toxic to a wide range of animals and aquatic life, and is suspected to cause cancer in humans. The halflife of DDT is 15 years. Half-life is the amount of time it takes for half of the amount of a substance to decay. Scientists and environmentalists worry about such substances because these hazardous materials continue to be dangerous for many years after their disposal.
