2009 Contents Neighborhoods listed in this report are included because 3 or more graduate/professional students, postdocs, and/or undergraduate students provided feedback about the neighborhood in the 2009 Off-Campus Housing Survey. Neighborhoods included in the report: American Village Forest Oaks Burch Avenue Morehead Duke Forest Old West Durham Partnerʼs Place Neighborhood Crime Statistics Crime statistics included in this report are compiled from Durham Police Crime Mapper, an online resource provided by the City of Durham. Statistics represent data available at the time of compilation. Statistics are meant to give a general idea of crime in the neighborhood and are not guaranteed to be error-free. In addition to the neighborhoods listed above, this report also includes crime statistics from: Colony Hill/Beech Hill Duke Park Forest Hills Lakewood/Lyon Park MacKenzie Place Northgate Park Old North Durham Trinity Heights Trinity Park Tuscaloosa-Lakewood Walden Pond Walltown Watts-Hillandale West End Woodstream Glenn 2009 Off-Campus Housing Survey Duke Community Housing conducts the off-campus housing survey annually. Previous yearsʼ reports are available on the Community Housing web site,
American Village # of Responses: 7 Graduate Students: 1 Professional Students: 3 Postdoc: 1 Undergraduate: 1 Condition 3.57 Yes: 7 Noise 3.43 No: 0 Safety 3.29 My only complaint is that I have to travel down Moreene to get to school, and it is a really dangerous bike ride. There aren't any lights, and there is no bike lane. There have been burglaries in the neighborhood and I have heard a gun shot once or twice and we had a strange man lie about who he was to get us to open the door but I have come to accept that I can't get away from things like that in Durham. All of Durham (at least anywhere near Duke) feels unsafe. I feel like I'm in as safe a place as I'm going to find. 3 Burch Avenue # of Responses: 12 Graduate Students: 5 Professional Students: 1 Postdoc: 1 Undergraduate: 5 Condition 3.33 Yes: 10 Noise 2.92 No: 2 Safety 2.75 good place...hard to find open apartments at this location during the school year b/c of proximity and ease of convenience to duke. Still feel unsafe walking in the neighborhood at night. We have a good relationship with most neighbors and have kept things relatively quiet (with a few exceptions). We are, however, the only student house on the block and I think the neighbors would quickly become upset with more than one student house. Also, two of the five immediately neighboring houses are unoccupied so that has probably helped to limit noise complaints. The root of the noise issue is how drastically different the schedules of college students are from those of average working people. It's too bad we can't have a place for only student & fraternity houses where everyone makes noise and stays up late (e.g., houses somewhere on central). The other tricky thing is that neighbors get pissed off the most when kids are in the street leaving our house, so even kicking kids out early creates a disturbance. What we've been doing is letting people on the street know when we expect to have friends over, and they all have our phone numbers so that they can call us when things get too loud rather than immediately complaining to the police. I think most of Durham feels pretty unsafe to me, but the Burch Avenue neighborhood has an active relationship with the police and neighbors are constantly on the lookout for suspicious activity making it feel much safer than other less connected neighborhoods. 4 Duke Forest # of Responses: 8 Graduate Students: 1 Professional Students: 4 Postdoc: 0 Undergraduate: 3 Condition 3.25 Yes: 8 Noise 3.88 No: 0 Safety 3.25 This neghborhood would be a great location for students if there were a (mowed) path (or even a sidewalk, which may be problematic due to the big beautiful trees and eroding hillside) on Academy -- from Cranford to Duke University and then along Duke University until the sidewalk starts halfway to Towerview, AND/OR from Cranford to Science Drive. Neighborhood Crime Statistics (Crime Statistics not available for 2003 and 2004) Duke Forest Arson Assault Burglary Gun Related Crimes Homicide Larceny Motor Vehicle Theft Rape Robbery
Forest Oaks # of Responses: 7 Graduate Students: 3 Professional Students: 3 Postdoc: 0 Undergraduate: 1 Condition 3.57 Yes: 7 Noise 3.71 No: 0 Safety 3.57 I found my housing on the graduate professional students housing list. I am very happy to be living in a normal, older neighborhood. The location is great. Within 5 minute drive to West Campus and many stores. Close to highway (15-501) making it convenient to commute to other areas. Neighborhood Crime Statistics Forest Oaks Assault Burglary Gun Related Crimes Larceny Motor Vehicle Theft Rape Robbery
Morehead Hill # of Responses: 5 Graduate Students: 4 Professional Students: 1 Postdoc: 0 Undergraduate: 0 Condition 3.4 Yes: 4 Noise 3.0 No: 1 Safety 2.8 I loved living in Morehead Hill when I first moved there in However, in the past year the neighborhood has changed: several break-ins, loud music, random people hanging out in the streets, and of course the murder on Shepherd Street in December. I am moving out next month and would not recommend the neighborhood any longer. I am moving to Northgate Park, which I would definitely recommend! Neighborhood Crime Statistics Morehead Hill Assault Burglary Gun Related Crimes Homicide Larceny Motor Vehicle Theft Rape Robbery
Old West Durham # of Responses: 20 Graduate Students: 14 Professional Students: 3 Postdoc: 1 Undergraduate: 2 Condition 3.3 Yes: 20 Noise 3.15 No: 0 Safety 3.05 I was assaulted, burgled, and had my house broken into. The man is now behind bars and it is doubtful that it will ever happen again (it seemed to just be a sad kid who had nowhere to go), but people should know. I love Old West Durham. One of the good things about it, not mentioned on your survey is that there are no/very few undergrads there. To many grad students (and staff and faculty) this is an important since we spend so much time with undergrads and we like to sleep, rather than party, at night. Bob Schmitz Properties are helpful and professional. Their apartments are in nice older houses that have been divided up. It is nice to live in a house without having to rent the whole place. I love living in Old West Durham because I can walk to school everyday. Everything I need is within walking and biking distance and the Duke busses have stops nearby. I feel like I am part of a real community and that is worth living in an older house to me. Also, I think it is important to highlight that Old West Durham is quite a safe place to live. When you know all your neighbors, then you can really look out for one another! 8 Partners Place # of Responses: 21 Graduate Students: 2 Professional Students: 0 Postdoc: 0 Undergraduate: 19 Condition 3.52 Yes: 20 Noise 2.52 No: 1 Safety 2.81 I have felt unsafe walking down the street after all the Morreene Road robberies, but the LaSalle bus is very convenient While I mentioned that I feel safe, there is no gated entry, and I have heard domestic disputes from the apartments next door. There are also individuals who come and dive through the trash, so I am always careful about what I throw out. However, the size of the condos at Partner's is great, and everyone having their own bathroom and walk-in closet is particularly nice. I just wish they had lights installed in the dining rooms already. Partners is great. It offers a robust living environment: normally quiet, accessible, an acceptable amount of partying, great location to food, stores, and highway, and nice and spacious apartments. Only problem is tight parking spaces. Recommend to anyone.
