Non-integrability of the semiclassical Jaynes Cummings models without the rotating-wave approximation Andrzej Maciejewski Janusz Gil Institute of Astronomy University of Zielona Góra Lubuska PL Zielona Góra Poland Wojciech Szumiński Institute of Physics University of Zielona Góra Licealna PL Zielona Góra Poland arxiv:7665v [nlincd] Mar 7 Abstract Two versions of the semi-classical Jaynes Cummings model without the rotating wave approximation are investigated It is shown that for a non-zero value of the coupling constant the version introduced by Belobrov Zaslavsky and Tartakovsky is Hamiltonian with respect to a certain degenerated Poisson bracket Moreover it is shown that both models are not integrable Keywords: Semi-classical Jaynes Cummings models; Poincaré cross sections; Non-integrability; Variational equations; Differential Galois group Introduction The Jaynes Cummings model describes a system of n two-levels atoms interacting with a single mode of the electromagnetic field Its rotating-wave approximation is exactly solvable With this approximation its semi-classical version is also solvable On the other hand numerical investigations of the semi-classical version of the Jaynes Cummings model without the rotating wave approximation shows its chaotic behaviour for a large range of its parameters Nevertheless particular periodic solutions of this system were found analytically Till now an integrability analysis of this system was not performed Here we investigate this problem in the framework of differential Galois theory There are two version of the the semi-classical Jaynes Cummings system The first of them investigated in [] has the following form ẋ = y ẏ = x + ze ż = ye Ė = B Ḃ = αx µ E (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) µ = ω/ω and α = nµ(λ/ω ) are the dimensionless parameters and the dot denotes the derivative with respect to rescaled time τ = ω t Here ω is the transition frequency of each atom and n is the number of two level atoms It is easy to verify that the system () posses two first integrals F = x + y + z () and the energy integral H = αz αxe + µ E + B () addresses: Szumiński) amaciejewski@iauzzgorapl (Andrzej Maciejewski) wszuminski@ifuzzgorapl (Wojciech Preprint submitted to Elsevier December 7
Jelen ska-kuklin ska in [4] and Kujawski in [7 8] found exact solutions of the system () They can be expressed in terms of elliptic Jacobian function E = E cn(ωt m) Ω =± m= and χ= µ 4 ± µ µ + 4Ω s p (4) (5) + χ E = 6mΩ α 4 µ µ (6) 7 µ (7) Solution (4) lies on energy level H (( x y z E B) = h with s 5 5 µ h=± α 4 µ µ (8) The components of the Bloch vector given in terms of the electric field E are defined by x ( E) = µ E E y( E) = x ( E) α 8 s ± α 4 µ + z( E) = µ µ E E4 α 4 () The domain of parameters for which solution (4) is real can be easily determined from the above formulae Since the system () posses two first integrals () and () we are able to reduce the dimension of the phase space to three Hence in order to get quickly insight into the dynamics of the considered system we make the Poincare cross sections which are shown in Figs - The black bullets denotes the elliptic solutions described enough Although the Poincare cross section is a standard tool for study chaotic dynamics we did not find its application in previous study of the Jaynes Cummings system (a) µ = 5 α = h= (b) µ = α = 4 h = Figure : Poincare sections on the surface x = with y > and z R restricted to the plane ( E B)
(a) µ = α = 4 h = (b) µ = α = 4 h = Figure : Poincare sections on the surface x = with y > and z R restricted to the plane ( E B) Here we would like to point out the system () is Hamiltonian with respect to a certain degenerated Poisson structure in R5 To see this let us assume that α 6= Then we can rewrite system () in the following form q = J (q) H (q) q = [ x y z E B] T z x z y J (q) := α y x α α () () The Poisson bracket defined by J (q) is degenerated First integral F (q) is the Casimir of this bracket If α = then system () in can be written the following form q = J (q)k (q) J (q) := K (q) = F (q) + H (q) () () E E Although this matrix is antisymmetric it does not define the Poisson structure as the bracket which it defines does not satisfied the Jacobi identity The different version of the system () has been studied by Miloni and co-workers see [] Namely x = y (4a) y = x + ze (4b) z = ye (4c) (4d) E = B B = α( x + ze) µ E (4e)
the dimensionless parameters µ α have the same meaning as in the first case Authors have presented the complexity of the system by means of Fourier analysis as well as by maximal Lyapunov exponent We found that this version of the Jaynes Cummings model has also two constants of motion F = x + y + z HM = α y αyb + αµ z + µ E + B (5) The existence of the first integral HM was not reported in it earlier studies of this system Although it looks quite similar to system () we were not able to find any particular solution on the sphere x + y + z = More importantly it is seems this system cannot be written as a Hamiltonian system with respect to a degenerated Poisson structure Nevertheless we have found that it can be put in the following form q = P (q) HM ( q ) (6) y P (q) := αµ x αz y x αz αy αx αy α(αz µ ) αx α(αz µ ) (7) Figure and 4 show the complexity of the system We made the Poincare cross sections for the exact resonance when µ = and α = for gradually increasing value of energy As we can see for higher and higher values of energy the dynamics becomes more and more complex see especially Figure 4 presenting the high stage of chaotic behaviour As we see the numerical analysis shows (a) µ = α = h = 5 (b) µ = α = h = Figure : Poincare sections on the surface x = with y > and z R restricted to the plane ( E B) that the dynamics of the both systems () and (4) is very complex and in fact chaotic Thus our main goal of this article is to prove that these systems are not integrable More precisely we show that they do not admit additional meromorphic first integral The main result is formulated in the following theorem Theorem For µ 6= systems () and (4) do not have an additional meromorphic first which is functionally independent with the respective known two first integrals Proof of Theorem Both systems () and (4) have the same invariant manifold defined by n o N = ( x y z E B) C5 x = y = z = 4 ()
(a) µ = α = h = (b) µ = α = h = Figure 4: Poincare sections on the surface x = with y > and z R restricted to the plane ( E B) and its restriction to N is defined by B = µ E E = B () Hence solving equation () we obtain a particular solution ϕ(t) = ( E(t) B(t)) E(t) = cos µt B(t) = µ sin µt () Let (ξ ξ ξ η η ) T be the variation of ( x y z E B) T then the variational equations along the particular solution () for system () takes the following matrix form ξ ξ ξ ξ cos µt ξ = cos µt (4) ξ η η η α µ η Since the motion takes place on the ( E B) plane equations for (ξ ξ ξ ) form a subsystem of the normal variational equations ξ = ξ ξ = ξ cos µt ξ = ξ + ξ cos µt (5) The normal variation equations for (4) are exactly the same It is easy to check that equations (5) have first integral f = ξ + ξ + ξ = We restrict them to the unit sphere ξ + ξ + ξ = To this end we introduce new coordinates u = so ξ = ξ + ξ iξ u u u u u = ξ = i ξ + iξ ξ + + u u u u ξ = u + u u u (6) (7) Functions u and u satisfy the Riccati equation u = A + Bu + Cu with the coefficients A = i cos µt B = i 5 C= (8) i cos µt ()
Putting u = v/(vc) we transform (8) to the linear homogeneous second-order differential equation v + P v + Qv = () with coefficients P = B Ċ C = i + µ tan µt Q = AC = 4 cos µt () Next by means of the change of independent variable as well as transformation of derivatives we transform () into the equation t z = exp(iµt) () d dt = ż d dz d d = (ż) dt dz + z d dz () v + p(z)v + q(z)v = d dz (4) with the rational coefficients p(z) = + z + µ ( + z) q(z) = µz 64µ z (5) Finally making the classical change of dependent variable ( v = w exp z ) p(s)ds (6) z we transform (4) into its reduced form the explicit form of r(z) is given by r(z) = w = r(z)w r(z) = q(z) + p (z) + 4 p(z) (7) 4(z + ) + 64µ z + µ 4µ 6µ + 4µ(z + ) µ z + + 6µ 48µ 64µ (8) z Equation (7) has two singular point z = z = and z = At z = z function r(z) has pole of order so it is irregular singular point Point z = z is regular singularity of the equation and the degree of infinity is equal one This implies that the differential Galois group of the equation (7) can be either dihedral or SL( C) Hence in order to check the first possibility we are going to apply the second case of the Kovacic algorithm For the detailed explanation of the algorithm please consult eg [5] Lemma The differential Galois group of the reduced equation (7) is SL( C) Proof For singular points z and z we introduce the auxiliary sets defined by E = { 6} E = {} E = {} () Next following the algorithm we for for elements e = (e e e ) of the product E = E E E for which the condition d(e) := (e e e ) N () is satisfied It is not difficult to see that there exist only one element e = { } E such that d(e) = Thus passing through to the third step of the algorithm we build the rational function ω(z) = ( e + e ) = ( z z z z z ) () z + 6
that must satisfy the following differential equation ω + ωω + ω 4rω r = d dz () r is given in (8) Equation above gives the equality ( z + 8z + z ) µ = () that cannot be satisfied for arbitrary values of z Thus the differential Galois group of equation (7) is SL( C) with non-abelian identity component In order to proof our theorem we notice that systems () and (4) are divergence-free Thus if they admit an additional first integral then by the theorem of Jacobi they are integrable by the quadratures see eq [6] The necessary condition for the integrability in the Jacobi sense is that the identity component of the differential Galois group of the variational equation is Abelian see [] We proved that it is SL( C) Hence the systems are not integrable Acknowledgement The work has been supported by grant NoDEC-//A/ST/8 of National Science Centre of Poland References [] P I Belobrov G M Zaslavsky and G Kh Tartakovsky Stochastic breaking of bound states is a system of atoms interacting with a radiation field Sov Phys JETP 44:45 77 Translation of ZhEkspTeorFiz 7:7 76 [] J Eidson and R F Fox Quantum chaos in a two-level system in a semiclassical radiation field Phys Rev A 4:88 86 [] R F Fox and J Eidson Quantum chaos and a periodically perturbed Eberly-Chirikov pendulum Phys Rev A 4:48 86 [4] M Jelenńska-Kuklińska and M Kuś Exact solution in the semiclassical Jaynes-Cummings model without the rotating-wave approximation Phys Rev A Vol 4 Iss 5 [5] J Kovacic An algorithm for solving second order linear homogeneous differential equations J Symbolic Comput (): 4 86 [6] Valerij V Kozlov Symmetries Topology and Resonances in Hamiltonian Systems Springer 6 [7] A Kujawski Exact periodic solution in the semiclassical Jaynes-Cummings model without the rotatingwave approximation Physical Rev A Vol 7 Iss 4 88 [8] A Kujawski and M Muntz Exact periodic solution and chaos in the semiclassical Jaynes- Cummings model Z Phys B Condensed Matter 7:7 768 [] P W Milonni J R Ackerhalt and H W Galbraith Chaos in the Semiclassical N-Atom Jaynes- Cummings Model: Failure of the Rotating-Wave Approximation Physical Rev Lett Vol 5 Iss 8 [] M Przybylska Differential Galois obstructions for integrability of homogeneous Newton equations J Math Phys Vol 4 No pp
