4 Longituinal ouble sin asymmetries in single Introuction e sin structure of te nucleon is one of te major unresolve issues in aronic ysics. Wile te quark sin contribution to te nucleon sin, enote as Σ, as been measure to be about 3% [1], te gluon sin contribution is still insufficiently constraine after more tan two ecaes of intense stuy. In te framework of erturbative Quantum Cromoynamics (QCD), inclusive Dee Inelastic Scattering (DIS) is sensitive to gluon contributions only troug iger-orer corrections to te cross section. e sin-average gluon ensity g(x g ), were x g enotes te nucleon momentum fraction carrie by gluons, is well constraine by DIS exeriments wit unolarise beam an target because of teir ig statistics an large kinematic coverage. e fewer ata from DIS exeriments wit olarise beam an target, owever, can not sufficiently constrain te gluon elicity istribution g(x g ). is affects irectly our knowlege of te contribution of te gluon sin to te sin of te nucleon, known as G = g(x g )x g, an to a lesser extent tat of te quarks [2]. In orer to better constrain g(x g ), one as to resort to rocesses were contributions from gluons aear at leaing orer. is is te case for letorouction of arons at ig transverse momenta in te limit of collinear fragmentation. Here, transverse means transverse wit resect to te irection of te virtual oton γ tat is excange in te scattering rocess. e COMPASS collaboration as alreay investigate asymmetries of arons leaing in, in bot te DIS an te quasi-real otorouction regimes [3, 4]. In general, a leaing-aron cross section is not efine in QCD [5], an terefore a moel is neee to interret te results. Using a Lun Monte Carlo simulation, tese measurements were interrete on te aron level, tereby simultaneously extracting te gluon elicity on te arton level. Suc an analysis is restricte to leaing orer (LO) in te strong couling constant α s, as resently tere exists no next-to-leaing orer (NLO) Monte Carlo simulation for letorouction. Due to te limitation of neglecting gluon contributions at NLO, suc results can not be use in recent global fits at NLO of olarise Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) [6]. In tis Letter, we resent a new analysis of COMPASS ata for single-inclusive aron quasi-real otorouction at ig 1, wic iffers from our revious analysis in tat all measure arons are inclue in te analysis, an not only tose leaing in. e interretation is base on a collinear QCD framework tat was eveloe u to NLO [5], te basic concet being te alication of te factorisation teorem to calculate te cross section of single-inclusive aron rouction. e autors of Ref. [5] iscuss te sensitivity of COMPASS ata to g(x g ) in terms of contributions from irectoton, γ g q q (Poton Gluon Fusion), an from resolve-oton subrocesses, qg an gg, were te oton acts as a source of artons. Similarly, tey consier irect γ q q qg (QCD Comton) as well as resolve qq an gq subrocesses for te backgroun. ese contributions to te cross section are reresente scematically in Fig. 1. In te framework of collinear fragmentation, oto-absortion on quarks, γ q q, is not contributing to ig aron rouction. 1 Note tat also inclusive quasi-real otorouction of aron airs can be consiere [7].

In orer to gain confience in te alicability of tis QCD framework to single-aron rouction wit longituinally olarise beam an target, an imortant ste is to comare reictions of tis moel to measurements wit beam an target unolarise, for wic te PDFs are well known. Wile goo agreement was foun by RHIC exeriments on te rouction of ig- arons in collisions at s 2 GeV [8, 9], comlications arise wen ar scattering subrocesses are robe in te tresol regime, in wic large logaritmic contributions from soft an collinear gluons lay a significant role [1]. Suc contributions become ominant at te COMPASS centre of mass energy of s 18 GeV. Wen taken into account by a tecnique known as tresol resummation at next-to-leaing logaritm (NNL) [1], te calculations rerouce te COMPASS cross section measurements [11] witin teoretical uncertainties. In tis Letter, we analyse te quasi-real otorouction ata collecte by COMPASS from 22 to 211 on longituinally olarise euteron an roton targets. In Sec. 2, we give a brief escrition of te exerimental setu, an etails on te ata selection can be foun in Sec. 3. e roceure for te asymmetry etermination is escribe in Sec. 4. In Sec. 5, we resent te corresoning ouble sin asymmetries for single-inclusive aron rouction as a function of. ese asymmetries are comare to calculations tat were erforme using te coe of Ref. [5], wic oes not inclue te resummation of tresol logaritms. 2 Exerimental Setu e measurements were erforme wit te COMPASS setu using ositive muons from te M2 beam line of te CERN SPS. A etaile escrition of te exerimental setu can be foun in Ref. [12], wit uates vali since 26 escribe in Ref. [13]. e muon beam a a nominal momentum of 16 GeV/c, excet for 211 were te momentum was 2 GeV/c. On average, its momentum srea was 5% an its olarization was P b.8. Momentum an trajectory of incient muons were measure by a set of scintillator ooscoes, scintillating fibre an silicon microstri etectors. e beam was scattere off a soli state euterate litium ( 6 LiD) target from 22 to 26 an off an ammonia (NH 3 ) target in 27 an 211, roviing longituinally olarise euterons an rotons, resectively. e target material was lace insie a large aerture suerconucting solenoi, an by ynamic nuclear olarisation it was olarise to a value of P t.5 for 6 LiD an P t.85 for NH 3. Until 24, te target material was containe in two contiguous 6 cm long cells tat were oositely olarise. From
6 Longituinal ouble sin asymmetries in single onwars, tree contiguous target cells of lengt 3cm, 6cm an 3cm were use to minimise systematics effects, wit te olarisation in te outer cells being oosite to tat in te central one. e irection of te target olarisation was regularly flie by reversing te solenoi fiel to comensate for accetance ifferences between te ifferent target cells. At least once er year, te irection of te olarisation was reverse relative to tat of te solenoi fiel. e ilution factor f, wic accounts for te resence of unolarisable material, amounts to tyically.4 for te euterate litium target an to.16 for te ammonia one. It is calculate as te ratio of te cross section on olarisable euteron or roton to tat on all target nuclei, correcte for unolarise x an y eenent electromagnetic raiative effects [14], were x is te Bjorken scaling variable an y te relative muon energy transfer. No furter raiative effects are taken into account. e momenta an angles of scattere muons an rouce arons were measure in te two-stage oen forwar sectrometer, were eac stage inclues a iole magnet wit ustream an ownstream tracking etectors. 3 Data Selection In orer to be selecte, an event must ave an interaction vertex tat contains bot incoming an scattere muons an at least one aron caniate track. e measure beam momentum is require to be in a ±2 GeV interval aroun te nominal value (±15 GeV in 211). In orer to equalise te flux troug eac target cell, te extraolate beam track is require to ass all target cells. Cuts on te osition of te vertex allow te selection of te target cell, in wic te scattering occurre. Only events wit oton virtuality Q 2 < 1 2 are accete. is kinematic region is referre to in te following as quasi-real otorouction region. In aition, y is require to be witin.1 an.9, were te lower limit removes events tat are ifficult to reconstruct an te uer limit removes te region were electromagnetic raiative effects are large. ese kinematic cuts result in a range of 1 5 < x <.2 an a minimum mass square of te aronic final state, W 2, of 25 (GeV/c 2 ) 2. e aron caniate track must ave >.7 GeV/c. e fraction z of te virtual oton energy carrie by te aron is require to be in te range.2 < z <.8, were te lower limit is imose to suress te contribution from target remnant aronisation an te uer limit to reject baly reconstructe arons. e angle between te irection of te aron an tat of te virtual oton is restricte to be in te range 1mra < θ < 12mra, wic corresons to 2.4 > η >.1, were η is te seuo-raiity in te γ N centre-ofmass system. After all selections, te final samle consists of 14 million events for te euteron target an 15 million for te roton target. 4 Asymmetry Calculation e ouble-sin asymmetry of te cross sections for single aron quasi-real otorouction is efine as = (σ σ )/(σ + σ ) = σ/σ, were te symbols an enote anti-arallel an arallel sin irections, resectively, of te incient muon an te target euteron or roton. is asymmetry is evaluate using te same meto as in our revious analyses [4]. e number of arons rouce in a target cell is relate to an to te sin ineenent cross section σ = σ + σ : N i = a i φ i n i σ(1 + f i P b P ti ), were i = u 1, 1,u 2, 2. A target cell (u or ) wit a given irection of te target olarisation (1 or 2) as te accetance a i, te incoming muon flux φ i an te number of target nucleons n i. For te two-cell target, u an enotes ustream an ownstream cell, resectively, wile for te tree-cell target, u enotes te sum of te outer cells an te central cell. e asymmetry is extracte from te secon orer equation tat is obtaine from te quantity (N u1 N 2 )/(N 1 N u2 ). In tis relation, fluxes an accetances cancel, rovie tat te ratio of accetances of te two sets of cells is equal for te two orientations of te solenoi fiel. In orer to minimise statistical uncertainties, all quantities entering te asymmetry are calculate for eac aron using a weigt factor w i = f i P b [15]. e muon beam olarisation P b is obtaine from a
7 6 e COMPASS Collaboration arametrisation as a function of te beam momentum. e target olarisation P ti is not inclue in te weigt w i as it canges wit time an coul generate false asymmetries. In orer to reuce systematic uncertainties, ata are groue into erios tat are close in time an ence ave te same etector conitions, an te weigte average over all erios is taken. e asymmetries etermine for a given target from ata taken in ifferent years were foun to be consistent an ence combine. e asymmetries are obtaine for bot ositive an negative unientifie arons in bins of in te range.7 GeV/c to 4 GeV/c an in bins of η in te range.1 to 2.4 in orer to facilitate a etaile comarison to teory (see Sec. 5). e ata for < 1. GeV/c are only use to investigate systematic uncertainties as te QCD framework is commonly alie only for ar scales µ e systematic uncertainties on are calculate as te square root of te sum of squares of multilicative an aitive contributions. e uncertainties on te ilution factor ( 5%), te beam ( 5%) an te target ( 5%) olarisations contribute to a total of 8% of multilicative uncertainties, i.e. tose being roortional to te asymmetry itself. Aitive contributions originate from fluctuations of te etector erformance, wic may lea to false asymmetries. eir ossible occurrence is investigate by iviing te ata samle into ifferent subsets. Asymmetries calculate wit arons etecte in left an rigt (to an bottom) arts of te sectrometers are foun to be comatible witin statistical uncertainties, as well as tose for te two relative orientations of te solenoi fiel an te target sin vectors. No systematic uncertainty is tus attribute to tese effects. Possible false asymmetries between ata sets aving te same olarisation states are also foun to be comatible wit zero. For eac bin, te statistical istribution of te asymmetries calculate by time erios closely follows a normal istribution. e observe eviations from a Gaussian allow us to quantify te level of overall aitive systematic uncertainties as a fraction of te statistical ones, wic on average amounts to about one alf. ese aitive systematic uncertainties largely ominate over te multilicative ones. 5 Results an interretation e final asymmetries are calculate using all ata accumulate wit te euteron target in te years 22 to 26 an wit te roton target in te years 27 an 211. eir -eenence in tree raiity bins sanning te full interval.1 < η < 2.4 ([-.1,.45], [.45,.9], an [.9,2.4]) is sown in Fig. 3 an Fig. 2 for eac target tye an aron carge. We comare our asymmetries wit teoretical calculations at NLO witout tresol resummation base on te framework escribe in Ref. [5] an summarize in te following. Using te coe of Ref. [5], te asymmetries are comute in bins of an η as te ratio of olarise to unolarise aron cross sections, were a cross section is a convolution of te muon-arton istribution function f µ a, te nucleon PDFs f N b, te erturbative artonic cross sections ˆσ a+b c+x, an te fragmentation functions (FF) D c: (,η) = σ σ (,η) = a,b,c f µ a f N b ˆσ a+b c+x D c a,b,c f µ a f N b ˆσ a+b c+x D c. (1) Here an below, sin-eenent quantities are enote by te symbol an will be referre to as olarise ones in te rest of te Letter (sin-ineenent ones as unolarise). e rocesses involve in Eq. 1 can be classifie into irect ones tat are initiate by a quasi-real oton an resolve ones tat are initiate by its fluctuation into artons. is classification is enote by te subscrit a (see Fig. 1). For irect rocesses, subscrit a refers to γ, an ( ) f µ γ is te robability for a muon to emit a quasi-real oton. For resolve rocesses, subscrit a refers to q or g, an ( ) f a µ is te convolution of tis robability wit a non-erturbative arton istribution of te oton, ( ) f γ a. e olarise version of te latter is not known exerimentally an ence taken to range between te ositive an negative

[5]: te unolarise arton istributions of te oton f γ a from GRS [16], te unolarise nucleon PDFs fb N from CEQ65 [17], an te tree olarise PDF sets from GRSV [18] (te stanar set wic corresons to te best fit to exerimental ata, an te two sets for maximum [ g(x) = g(x)] an minimum [ g(x) = g(x)] gluon istribution functions at inut scale). Using tese tree PDF sets, te integration over te range.5 < x g <.2, wic is caracteristic for te kinematic coverage of COMPASS in te gluon momentum fraction, yiels tree truncate values of G at a scale of 3 2 : G GRSVmin.6, G GRSVst.2, G GRSVmax.7. e only inuts we cange wit resect to Ref. We cecke, as it was one in Ref.
