Non-existence of positive weak solutions for some nonlinear (p, q)-laplacian systems arxiv: v1 [math.ap] 16 Dec 2014 Salah. A. Khafagy Mathematics Department, Faculty of Science, Al-Azhar University, Nasr City (11884), Cairo, Egypt. el Abstract In this work we deal with the class of nonlinear (p,q)-laplacian system of the form pu = µρ 1 (x)f(v) in, qv = νρ 2 (x)g(u) in, u = v = 0 on. where p with p > 1 denotes the p-laplacian defined by pu div[ u p 2 u], µ,ν are positive parameters, ρ 1 (x), ρ 2 (x) are weight functions, f,g : [0, ) R are continuous functions and R N is a bounded domain with smooth boundary. Non-existence results of positive weak solutions are established under some certian conditions on f, g when µν is small Mathematics Subject Classification: 35J60,35B40. Key words: weak solution, p-laplacian. 1 Introduction: In this paper we first consider a non-existence result of positive weak solutions for the following nonlinear system p u = λa 1 (x)v p 1 b 1 (x)v α 1 c 1 (x) in, q v = λa 2 (x)u q 1 b 2 (x)u β 1 c 2 (x) in, u = v = 0 on, (1.1) where p with p > 1 denotes the weighted p-laplacian defined by p u div[ u p 2 u], a i (x), b i (x) and c i (x),i = 1,2 are weight functions, α and β are positive constants and R N is a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We first show that if λ < max(λ p,λ q ), where λ p,λ q is the first eigenvalue of p, q respectively, then system (1.1) has no positive weak solutions. Current Address: Mathematics Department, Faculty of Science in Zulfi, Majmaah University, Zulfi 11932, P.O. Box 1712, Saudi Arabia. 1
Next we consider the nonlinear system p u = µρ 1 (x)f(v) in, q v = νρ 2 (x)g(u) in, u = v = 0 on. (1.2) where µ,ν are positive parameters, ρ 1 (x), ρ 2 (x) are weight functions and R N is a bounded domain with smooth boundary. Let f,g : [0, ) R are continuous functions. Also, assume that there exist positive numbers K i and M i,i = 1,2 such that f(v) K 1 v p 1 M 1, for all v 0 (1.3) and g(u) K 2 u q 1 M 2, for all u 0. (1.4) We discuss a non-existence result for system (1.2) when µν is small. Problems of the form (1.1) and (1.2) arise from many branches of pure mathematics as in the theory of quasiregular and quasiconformal mappings (see [13]) as well as from various problems in mathematical physics notably the flow of non-newtonian fluids. The p-laplacian also appears in the study of torsional creep (elastic for p = 2, plastic as p, (see [5]), glacial sliding (p (1; 4 3 ], see [10] or flow through porous media (p = 3 2, see [11]). For existence and non-existence results of positive weak solutions for systems involving the weighted p-laplacian, see ([2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12]). This paper is organized as follows: In section 2, we introduce some technical results and notations, which are established in [4]. In section 3, we prove the non-existence of positive weak solutions for system (1.1) and (1.2). 2 Technical Results Let us introduce the Sobolev space W 1,p (), 1 < p <, defined as the completion of C () with respect to the norm (see [4]) u W 1,p () = u p + u p 1 p <. (2.1) Since we are dealing with the Dirichlet problem, we define the space W 1,p 0 () as the closure of C 0 () in W 1,p () with respect to the norm u W 1,p 0 () = u p 1 p <, (2.2) which is equivalent to the norm given by (2.1). Both spaces W 1,p () and W 1,p 0 () are well defined reflexive Banach Spaces. Now, we introduce some technical results concerning the eigenvalue problem } p u = λa(x) u p 2 u in, u = 0 on. (2.3) 2
We will say λ R is an eigenvalue of (2.3) if there exists u W 1,p 0 (), u 0, such that u p 2 u φdx = λ a(x)u p 2 uφdx, (2.4) holds for φ W 1,p 0 (). Then u is called an eigenfunction corresponding to the eigenvalue λ. Lemma 1 There exists the first eigenvalue λ p > 0 and precisely one corresponding eigenfunction φ p 0 a.e. in of the eigenvalue problem (2.3). Moreover, it is characterized by φ p p u p u p λ p = a(x) φ p = p inf u W 1,p 0 () a(x) u p a(x) u = λ. p Definition 1 A pair of non-negative functions (u,v) W 1,p 0 () W 1,q 0 () are called a weak solution of (1.2) if they satisfy u p 2 u ζdx = µ ρ 1 (x)f(v)ζdx, for all test functions ζ W 1,p 0 (P,),η W 1,q 0 (). v q 2 v ηdx = ν ρ 2 (x)g(u)ηdx, 3 Non-existence Results In this section we state our main results. Throught this section, we assume q be such that 1 p + 1 q = 1. Theorem 2 For λ λ, system (1.1) has no positive weak solution. Proof. Assume that there exist a positive solution (u,v) W 1,p 0 () W 1,q 0 () of (1.1). Multiplying the first equation of ( 1.1) by u, we have u p dx = [λa 1 (x)v p 1 b 1 (x)v α 1 c 1 (x)]udx (3.1) < [λa 1 (x)v p 1 c 1 (x)]udx. But, from the characterization of the first eigenvalue, we have λ p a(x) u p u p. (3.2) Combining (1) and (3.2), we have λ p a 1 (x)u p < λa 1 (x)v p 1 udx c 1 (x)udx. (3.3) Similarly, from the second equation of (1.1), we obtain λ q a 2 (x)v q < λa 2 (x)u q 1 vdx c 2 (x)vdx. (3.4) 3
Adding (3.3) and (3.4), we get λ p a 1 (x)u p +λ q a 2 (x)v q < < λa 1 (x)v p 1 udx+ c 1 (x)udx λa 2 (x)u q 1 vdx c 2 (x)vdx λa 1 (x)v p 1 udx+ λa 2 (x)u q 1 vdx Applying the Young inequality on the right hand side of the above equation, we have λ p a 1 (x)u p +λ q a 2 (x)v q < λa 1 (x)[ up p + vp q ]dx+ λa 2 (x)[ vq q + uq ]dx (3.5) p Now, we discuss the following two cases: Case I, if u v for all x, then (3.5) becomes Hence, λ p a 1 (x)v p +λ q (λ p λ) a 2 (x)v q < which is a contradiction if λ max(λ p,λ q ) = λ. Case II, if u v for all x, then (3.5) becomes Hence, λ p a 1 (x)u p +λ q (λ p λ) a 1 (x)v p +(λ q λ) a 2 (x)u q < λa 1 (x)v p dx+ a 1 (x)u p +(λ q λ) a 2 (x)v q < 0 λa 1 (x)u p dx+ a 2 (x)u q < 0 which is a contradiction if λ max(λ p,λ q ) = λ. The proof complete. Now we consider the main result for system (2.2): λa 2 (x)v q dx. λa 2 (x)u q dx. Theorem 3 Let (1.3) and (1.4) hold. Then system (1.2) has no positive weak solution if µν λ2 1 K 1K 2. Proof. Suppose u > 0 and v > 0 be such that (u,v) is a solution of (2.2). We prove our theorem by arriving at a contradiction. Multiplying the first equation in (2.2) by a positive eigenfunction say φ p corresponding to λ p, we obtain p u φ p dx = µ ρ 1 (x)f(v)φ p dx, and hence using (2.1) and (1.3), we have λ p ρ 1 (x)u p 1 φ p dx µ ρ 1 (x)[k 1 v q 1 M 1 ]φ p dx. (3.6) 4
Similarly using the second equation in (2.2) and (1.4) we obtain λ q ρ 2 (x)v q 1 φ q dx ν ρ 2 (x)[k 2 u p 1 M 2 ]φ q dx. (3.7) From (3.7), we have v q 1 ν λ q [K 2 u p 1 M 2 ] (3.8) Combining (3.6) and (3.8) we obtain [λ p µν K 1K 2 ] ρ λ 1 (x)u p 1 φ p µ q ρ 1 (x)[ νk 1M 2 λ q +M 1 ]φ p < 0. Hence system (1.2) has no positive weak solution if µν λpλq K 1K 2. Remark 4 If f,g be such that f(v) K 1 v q 1 +M 1, for all v 0, (3.9) and g(u) K 2 u p 1 +M 2, for all u 0, (3.10) then we have the following theorem: Theorem 5 Let (3.9) and (3.10) hold. Then system (1.2) has no positive weak solution if µν λpλq K 1K 2. Proof. The proof proceeds in the same way as for Theorem 6. Remark 6 When p = q, m 1 (x) = m 2 (x) = m,m = a,b,c is constant, and α = β, we have some results for (1.1) in [1]. Remark 7 When p = q and ρ 1 (x) = ρ 2 (x) = 1, we have some results for (1.2) in [1]. Acknowledgement. The author would like to express his gratitude to Professor H. M. Serag (Mathematics Department, Faculty of Science, AL- Azhar University) for continuous encouragement during the development of this work.
