A NOTE ON FINITE REAL MULTIPLE ZETA VALUES HIDEKI MURAHARA Abstract. We prove three theorems on finite real multiple zeta values: the symmetric formula, the sum formula and the height-one duality theorem. These are analogues of their counterparts on finite multiple zeta values. arxiv: v2 [math.nt] 3 Jan Main theorems For positive integers k 1,k 2,...,k n with k 1 2, the multiple zeta value and the multiple zeta star value MZV and MZSV, for short are defined by 1 ζk 1,k 2,...,k n :=, m 1 >m 2 > >m n 1 m k 1 1 m k 2 2 m kn n ζ 1 k 1,k 2,...,k n :=. m k 1 1 m k 2 2 m kn n m 1 m 2 m n 1 The finite real multiple zeta values or symmetric multiple zeta values, which were first introduced by Kaneko and Zagier [10], are defined for any positive integers k 1,k 2,...,k n as follows: n ζf k 1,k 2,...,k n := 1 k 1+k 2 + +k i ζ k i,k i 1,...,k 1 ζ k i+1,k i+2,...,k n, ζ X Fk 1,k 2,...,k n := i=0 n 1 k 1+k 2 + +k i ζ X k i,k i 1,...,k 1 ζ X k i+1,k i+2,...,k n. i=0 Here, the symbols ζ and ζ X on the right-hand sides stand for the regularized values coming from harmonic and shuffle regularizations respectively, i.e., real values obtained by taking constant terms of harmonic and shuffle regularizations as explained in [7]. In the sums, we understand ζ = ζ X = 1. Let Z be the Q-vector subspace of R spaned by the MZVs. It is known that this is a Q-algebra. In [10], Kaneko and Zagier proved that the difference ζ F k 1,k 2,...,k n ζ X F k 1,k 2,...,k n is in the principal ideal of Z generated by ζ2 or π 2, in other words, that the congruence ζ Fk 1,k 2,...,k n ζ X Fk 1,k 2,...,k n mod ζ2 holds in Z. They then defined the finite real multiple zeta value FRMZV ζ F k 1,k 2,...,k n as an element in the quotient ring Z/ζ2 by ζ F k 1,k 2,...,k n := ζ F k 1,k 2,...,k n mod ζ2. We also refer to the values ζ F k 1,k 2,...,k n and ζ X F k 1,k 2,...,k n as harmonic and shuffle versions of finite real multiple zeta values. In this paper, we prove the following theorems: 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 11M32; Secondary 05A19. Key words and phrases. 2 FINITE REAL MULTIPLE ZETA VALUES 2 Theorem 1.1 Symmetric formula. Let k 1,k 2,...,k n be any index set k i N and let S n be the symmetric group of degree n. Then, we have σ S n ζ F k σ1,k σ2,...,k σn = 0 in Z/ζ2. Theorem 1.2 Sum formula. Let k 1,k 2,...,k n be any index set k i N. For positive integers k,n and i with 1 i n k 1, we have ζf k 1,k 2,...,k n 1 i n ζk, i 1 n i k 1 +k 2 + +k n=k where the congruences are modζ2 in the Q-algebra Z. Theorem 1.3 Height-one duality theorem. For positive integers k and n, we have the equality in Z/ζ2. ζ F k,1,...,1 = ζ F n,1,...,1 k 1 2. Proofs 2.1. Proof of Theorem 1.1. Let k 1,k 2 and k be any index sets. We note that the FRMZVs ζ F k 1,k 2,...,k n satisfy the harmonic product rule: ζ F k 1ζ F k 2 = ζ F k 1 k 2, wheretheright-hand-sideisalinear combinationofζ F k scomingfromtheharmonicproduct in [5], e.g., ζ F 2 2 = 2ζ F 2,2+ζ F 4. Hoffman s theorem [6, Theorem 4.1] states that any symmetric sum σ S n ζ F k σ1,k σ2,...,k σn isapolynomialintheriemannzeta valuesζk. Hisproofonlyusestheharmonicproductrule of MZVs, and hence applies to our ζ F k s. Therefore, we conclude completely in the similar manner asin[6]thatthesymmetric sumaboveisasumofproductsofζ F k = 1+ 1k ζk, which is 0 when k is odd and a multiple of ζ2 when k is even. Remark. One can also prove Theorem 1.1 directly by using the definition. For example, we compute σ S 3 ζ F k σ1,k σ2,k σ3 = 1+ 1 k k k 3 σ S 3 ζ k σ1,k σ2,k σ3 + 1 k k k 3 ζk 1 +k 2,k 3 +ζ k 3,k 1 +k k k k 2 ζk 1 +k 3,k 2 +ζ k 2,k 1 +k k k k 1 ζk 2 +k 3,k 1 +ζ k 1,k 2 +k 3. Whenthe weight =sum of theindices k is odd, thecoefficients 1+ 1 k k k 3 and 1 k k k 3 and etc. become 0. When k is even, the factor k k k 3 becomes 0 if at least one of k i is odd. When all k i s are even, then σ S 3 ζ k σ1,k σ2,k σ3 = ζ k 1 ζ k 2 ζ k 3 ζk 1 + k 2 ζ k 3 ζk 1 +
FINITE REAL MULTIPLE ZETA VALUES 3 k 3 ζ k 2 ζk 2 +k 3 ζ k 1 +2ζk 1 +k 2 + k 3 is 0 modulo ζ2. As for the term 1 k k k 3 ζk 1 +k 2,k 3 +ζ k 3,k 1 +k 2 etc., if we write this as 1 k k k 3 ζk 1 +k 2 ζ k 3 ζk 1 +k 2 +k 3, we see either 1 k k k 3 = 0 or ζk 1 +k 2 ζ k 3 ζk 1 +k 2 +k 3 is a multiple of ζ Proof of Theorem 1.2. We can prove Theorem 1.2 exactly in the same manner as in [12]. Set S k,n,i := ζf k 1,k 2,...,k n. k 1 +k 2 + +k n=k We notice that the harmonic version of FRMZVs satisfy the harmonic product rule. Thus, S k,n,i enjoy the recursion relation in the following lemma, which can be proved exactly in the same way as in [12, Proposition 2.2]. Lemma 2.1. For positive integers k, n and i with 2 i+1 n k 1, we have n is k,n,i +is k,n,i+1 +k ns k,,i = 0. We prove Theorem 1.2 by backward induction on n. To this, we need the initial value. Lemma 2.2. For positive integers k and i with 1 i k 1, we have k S k,k 1,i 1 i 1 ζk mod ζ2. i Proof. Since S k,k 1,i = ζf 1,...,1,2,1,...,1, we compute ζ F X1,...,1,2,1,...,1 instead. Because of the fact ζf X 1,...,1 = 0, we have by definition S k,k 1,i ζf X 1,...,1,2,1,...,1 mod ζ2 = ζ X 1,...,1,2,1,...,1+ 1 k ζ X 1,...,1,2,1,...,1. k i 1 i 1 By using [7, eq.5.2] for w 0 = xy l, we have ζ X 1,...,1,2,1,...,1 = 1 m m+l m ζ2,1,...,1. m l 1 m+l 1 Thus, k 1 S k,k 1,i 1 i 1 i 1 k 1 k + ζ2,1,...,1 = 1 i i 1 i k 2 ζk mod ζ2. Let us consider the case n = k 1 of Theorem 1.2. If k is even, the identity holds from Lemma 2.2. If k is odd, then n is even and the identity again follows because k + 1 n = + =. i 1 n i i 1 i i
We assume the identity holds for n. By Lemma 2.1, FINITE REAL MULTIPLE ZETA VALUES 4 n ks k,,i = n is k,n,i +is k,n,i+1 = n i 1 i n ζk i 1 n i +i 1 i + 1 n ζk i n i 1 k 1 k 1 = 1 n i i 1 +k n+i 1 n ζk i 1 n i k i i +i 1 n ζk i 1 n i 1 = n k 1 i ζk. i 1 n i 1 Thus, the identity holds for. Remark. We mention an analogy of Theorem 1.2 on finite real multiple zeta star values. For positive integers k 1,k 2,...,k n, let us define ζ, F by ζ, F k 1,k 2,...,k n := ζfk 1 k 2 k n. is either a comma, or a plus + Set Sk,n,i := k 1 +k 2 + +k n=kζ, F k 1,k 2,...,k n. Since these ζ, F k 1,k 2,...,k n satisfy the same harmonic product rule as ζ k 1,k 2,...,k n, Sk,n,i enjoy the same recursion relation as [12, Proposition 2.2], that is, n isk,n,i + is k,n,i+1 k ns k,,i = 0. Writing k i k j for juxtaposition of index sets k i and k j, we see from [6, Theorem 3.1] that ζ, F k n,k,...,k 1 = 1 n k 1 k l =k 1,k 2,...,k n 1 l ζ Fk 1 ζ Fk l. Consider the case k 1,k 2,...,k n = 1,...,1,2,1,...,1 in this equality. Since ζ F 1,...,1 k i 1 i 1 ζf X1,...,1 = 0 mod ζ2,theright-hand-sideisequalmoduloζ2toζx F 1,...,1,2,1,...,1. Thus, we find Sk,k 1,i S k,k 1,i 1 i 1 k i ζk mod ζ2. In a similar way as the proof of Theorem 1.2 i.e., by backward induction on n, we get k 1 ζ, F k 1,k 2,...,k n 1 i 1 1 n + i 1 k 1 +k 2 + +k n=k k 1 ζk mod ζ2. n i 2.3. Proof of Theorem 1.3. For a given index k, we call the number of its elements greater than 1 the height. With this terminology, we shall call ζ F k,1,,1 height one FRMZVs. In this section, we prove Theorem 1.3. To this, we state the following key lemma.
FINITE REAL MULTIPLE ZETA VALUES 5 Lemma 2.3. For positive integers k and n with k 2, we have ζ X 1,...,1,k = 1 ζ k,1,...,1. Proof. We note that the MZVs ζ X k 1,k 2,...,k n satisfy the shuffle product rule for precise definition in [5] coming from the iterated integral expressions of the MZVs: ζ X k 1 ζ X k 2 = ζ X k 1 Xk 2, e.g., ζ X 1,1X2 = 3ζ X 2,1,1+ 2ζ X 1,2,1+ ζ X 1,1,2. Here, the notation k 1 Xk 2 is a Z-linear combination of indices and we extend ζ X linearly. To make notations easier, let ζ X 1 k 1,k 2,...,k n = ζ X k 1 + 1,k 2,...,k n and ζ X...,l,1,...,1,m,... = 1 ζ X...,l+m 1,... By the regularization formula [7, eq.5.2], we have extending 1 also linearly ζ X 1,...,1,k = 1 ζ X 1 1,...,1Xk 1 = 1 ζ2,1,...,1,...,2,1,...,1,2,1,...,1 a 1 1 a k 2 1 a 1 + +a k = a i 0i=1,2,...,k = 1 a 1 + +a k 1 = a i 0i=1,2,...,k 1 = 1 a 1 + +a k 1 = a i 0i=1,2,...,k 1 a k 1 +a k a k 1 +1ζ2,1,...,1,...,2,1,...,1,2,1,...,1 a 1 1 a k 2 1 a k 1 +1ζa k 1 +2,a k 2 +1,...,a a k 1 For the last equality, we used the duality formula of MZVs. That the last sum equals ζ n,1,...,1 is due to Ohno [11, Proof of Theorem 2], see also [9, 3]. Thus k 1 ζ X 1,...,1,k = 1 ζ k,1,...,1. Now, we prove Theorem 1.3. When either k or n = 1, the theorem clearly holds. We consider the case when k,n 2. From the above Lemma 2.3, we have ζf X k,1,...,1 ζ F X n,1,...,1 k 1 = ζk,1,...,1+ 1 k ζ k,1,...,1 ζn,1,...,1+ 1 n ζ n,1,...,1. k 1 k 1 Let ψx = Γ X ΓX. By using the well-known generating series 1 ζk+1,1,...,1x k Y n = exp k,n 1 n 2 = Γ1 XΓ1 Y Γ1 X Y ζn Xn +Y n X +Y n n
FINITE REAL MULTIPLE ZETA VALUES 6 cf. Aomoto[2]andDrinfel d[3]andψ1 X = k 2 ζkxk 1 γ γ iseuler sconstant., we have ζk,1,...,1 ζn,1,...,1 X k 1 Y k,n 2 k 1 = 1 Y 1 X 1 Γ1 XΓ1 Y Γ1 X Y +ψ1 X ψ1 Y. On the other hand, from Kaneko and Ohno [8, Theorem 2], 1 k ζ k,1,...,1 1 n ζ n,1,...,1 X k 1 Y k,n 2 k 1 = ψx+ψy πcotπx cotπy Γ1 XΓ1 Y, Γ1 X Y From these, and by the well-known equalities: we have πcotπx = 1 X +ψ1 X ψ1+x, ψx = ψ1+x 1 X, ζfk,1,...,1 X ζ Fn,1,...,1 X k,n 2 k 1 = 1 Y 1 X 1 Γ1 XΓ1 Y Γ1 X Y X k 1 Y +ψ1 X ψ1 Y ψx+ψy πcotπx cotπy Γ1 XΓ1 Y Γ1 X Y = 1 Γ1 XΓ1 Y ψ1 X ψ1+x ψ1 Y+ψ1+Y Γ1 X Y = 2 1 Γ1 XΓ1 Y ζ2lx 2l 1 Y 2l 1. Γ1 X Y Since the coefficients of Γ1 XΓ1 Y Γ1 X Y This proves Theorem 1.3. l 1 belong to the Q-algebra Z, we have ζf X k,1,...,1 ζ F X n,1,...,1 mod ζ2. k 1 Acknowledgment The author would like to thank Professor Masanobu Kaneko for valuable comments and suggestions.
