HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS WITH THE TANGENTIAL COMPONENTS VANISHING arxiv: v [math.ap] 7 Mar 204 XINGFEI XIANG AND ZHIBING ZHANG Abstract. This note stdies the Hardy-type ineqalities for vector fields with the L norm of the crl. In contrast to the well-known reslts in the whole space for the divergence-free vectors, we generalize the Hardy-type ineqalities to the bonded domains and to the non-divergencefree vector fields with the tangential components on the bondary vanishing.. Introdction This note is devoted to establish the Hardy-type ineqality for vector fields in L space in 3-dimensional bonded domains. We prove that for the vector field with the tangential components on the bondary vanishing, the L norm of / can be controlled by the L norm of +lndiv and the L norm of crl. This work belongs to the field of the L estimate for vector fields. Starting with the pioneering work by Borgain and Brezis in [2], the L estimate has been well stdied by many mathematicians, see [2-7, 0-2, 5, 6, 8] and the references therein. In particlar, Borgain and Brezis in [4] obtained the delicate L 3/2 estimate for the divergence-free vectors on the tors T 3. Maz ya in [] also see Bosqet and Van Schaftingen s more general reslt in [6] by introdcing the cancellation condition obtained a Hardy-type ineqality for the divergence-free vector fields not direct bt implied C crl L R 3.. L R 3 This actally gives the essential answer to the problem raised by Borgain and Brezis in [4, open problem ]. Bosqet and Mironesc give an elementary proof of. in [5]. In this note we consider the problem in bonded domains, in particlar with the singlarity the origin being on the bondary. For the case of the singlarity being in the interior of the domain, we can easily get the similar estimate. in bonded domains by taking the ct-off method. However, if the singlarity is on the bondary, the sal flattening bondary and the localization by partition of nity does not work. The main reason is that by taking the flattening bondary there wold arise the L norm of, this term can t be controlled by the L norm of crl for the vector being divergence-free, and hence a new approach shold be considered. To get arond this difficlty we apply the Helmholtz-Weyl decomposition for vector fields in bonded domains see [9, Theorem 2.]: = crlw + p + H, Mathematics Sbject Classification 200: 35A23; 46E30; 46E40 Date: Janary, 208. 2 2 HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS where H is the harmonic part depending only on the domain. Or strategy is to get the estimates for the crl part crlw and the gradient part p respectively. Thanks to Solonnikov s work in [3, 4] also see Beirão da Veiga and Berselli s work in [, p.606], the vector w in the crl part satisfies Petrovsky type elliptic system, and hence there exists a single Green s matrix Gx,y sch that wx = Gx, y crl ydy. Based on the estimate for the Green s matrix, we can obtain the estimate on the crl part. For the gradient part p we can se the classical elliptic theory to get the estimate. Before stating the main reslt, we make the following assmption on the domain: O is a bonded in R 3 with smooth bondary, in all cases considered here the class C 2 will be sfficient. The second Betti nmber is 0 which is nderstood as there is no holes in the domain. Denote by νx the nit oter normal vector at x. The main reslt now reads: Theorem.. Assme that the domain satisfies the assmption O. Then for any C,R 3 with ν = 0 on, we have C lndiv L + crl L,.2 L where the constant C depends only on the domain. Remark.2. We need to mention that i The proof method of this theorem is not applicable for the vector fields with the normal components on the bondary vanishing. The reason is that the key step we sed is the zero extension of crl otside of the domain, bt this does not hold for the vector fields with the normal components on the bondary vanishing. ii By a similar discssion, one can get the estimate for elliptic system associating with the Hardy-type ineqality. Let f C,R 3 with divf = 0 in and ν f = 0 on the bondary. Then for the elliptic system L = f with the form of the soltion can be expressed by = Gx, yfydy, where the Green s matrix Gx, y satisfy the ineqality 2., we have 2 C f L. L However, this may not be tre for the single elliptic eqation. The typical example is L = with zero bondary condition. The organization of this paper is as follows. In Section 2, we will give the proof of Theorem.. In Section 3, the Hardy-type ineqality in L p space with < p < 3/2 will be treated. We will show that the L p norm of / can be controlled by the L p norm of the div and the crl whether or not the singlarity is on the bondary.
HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS 3 Throghot the paper, the bold typeface is sed to indicate vector qantities; normal typeface will be sed for vector components and for scalars. 2. Hardy-type ineqalities for vector fields with L data The key step in the proof of the main theorem is the estimate for the singlar integral involving the operator crl. This estimate was first obtained by Maz ya in [] in the case of thekernel being thenewtonian potential andofthe domainbeing theentire space. The case where the kernel being the Green s fnction associating with the elliptic operator in the entire space was considered by Bosqet and Van Schaftingen see [6, Lemma 2.2]. We generalized their kernel to a more general case. The method of or proof goes back to work by Bosqet and Mironesc in [5]. Lemma 2.. Sppose that the fnction Ax,y C R 3 for x y satisfying i Ax, y C x y 2; ii yax,y C x y Let Ψ L R 3,R 3 with divψ = 0. Then there exists a constant C sch that Ax,yΨydy C Ψ L R R 3 L Proof. For simplicity of the notations, we let I Σ := Ax, yψydy. Then write Σ R 3 Ax,yΨydy = I { y >2} +I { 4 < y <2} +I { y < 4 }. 2.3 The estimation of these integrals are achieved as follows. For all x, y satisfying 2 < y, the ineqality x y y /2 holds, then sing Fbini s theorem, we obtain I{ y >2} dx Ψy Ax,y R R dxdy 3 3 {< y 2 } C Ψy R y 3 2 {< y 2 } 2.4 dxdy. It is easy to see that the last term of the above ineqality can be controlled by the L norm of Ψx. We now estimate the second term in the right side of 2.3. Using Fbini s theorem again, it follows that R 3 I 4 < y <2 dx C Ψy R 3 Ψy R 3 { y <<4 y } 2 { x y <5 y } x y 2dxdy y x y 2dxdy, the last term in the above ineqality can also be controlled by Ψx L R
4 HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS We now estimate the integral involving the term I { y </4}. Take the ct-off fnction ηt sch that ηt = 0 for t > /2, ηt = for 0 < t < /4, and η t 8. Applying the eqality divy i Ax,yη y /Ψydy = 0 for i =,2,3, R 3 and then sing divψ = 0 we have Ax,yη y /Ψydy R 3 = y Ax,yη y / Ψyy,y 2,y 3 dy. R 3 The conditions i and ii, for y < /2, imply that y Ax,yη y / C x y 3 + x y 2 This shows that Ax,yη y /Ψydy dx C Ψy R R 3 3 {>2 y } C 3. y 4dxdy. 2.6 The last term in the above ineqality can be controlled by Ψx L R 3. Noting that R 3 Ax,yη y /Ψydy =I { y < 4 } { + 4 < y < 2 } Ax,yη y /Ψydy. The estimation involving the last term of the above eqality can be obtained by 2.5. Ths from 2.6 it follows that I { y < 4 } dx C Ψx L R 3. Plgging 2.4, 2.5 and the above ineqality back to 2.3 we obtain 2.2. We finish or proof. Remark 2.2. It is easy to see that this lemma is still tre if replaced the scalar fnction Ax,y by a matrix Gx,y satisfying the ineqalities in 2.. By a similar discssion of Lemma 2. and applying Fbini s theorem, we can get the estimate of the singlar integral for scalar fnctions. Lemma 2.3. Sppose that the fnction lnψ L and assme that the fnction Ax,y C for x y satisfying the ineqalities in 2.. Then there exists a constant C depending only on the domain sch that Ax, yψydy C +lnψ L. 2.7 L For the vector Ψ = crlφ with ν Φ = 0 on the bondary, the estimate in Lemma 2.3 can be improved.
HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS 5 Lemma 2.4. Let Φ C,R 3 with ν Φ = 0 on the bondary. Sppose that the fnction Ax,y C for x y satisfying the ineqalities in 2., then there exists a constant C sch that Ax,ycrlΦdy C crlφ L. 2.8 L Proof. Let Φ be the zero extension of the vector Φ otside of the. Then crl Φ = 0 in R 3 in the sense of distribtion, and we get Ax,ycrlΦdy = Ax,ycrl L Φdy. R 3 L From Lemma 2., it follows that Ax,ycrlΦdy Ccrl Φ C crlφ L L L R 3. We now give the proof of the main theorem. Proof of Theorem.. From the Helmholtz-Weyl decomposition see [9, Theorem 2.], for every C there exists a decomposition where the fnction p W 2,p satisfying = p +crlw, 2.9 p = div in, p = 0 on ; 2.0 the vector w Xn 2,p with Xn 2,p defined by Xn 2,p { w W 2,p : div w = 0, ν w = 0 on } and the vector w satisfying the elliptic system crlcrlw = crl in, divw = 0 in, ν crlw = ν = 0 on, ν w = 0 on. 2. By the classical elliptic eqation theory, we see that the soltion p of the eqation 2.0 has the form p = G x,ydivydy and Green s fnction G x,y satisfies the ineqality 2.. Lemma 2.3 gives p C +lndiv L. 2.2 L
6 HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS We now estimate the term involving the operator crl. Note that the elliptic system 2. is of Petrovsky type see Solonnikov [3, 4], also see the reference [, p.606] by Beirão da Veiga and Berselli. Therefore, the soltion of 2. can be expressed by wx = Gx, y crl ydy. where the Green s matrix Gx,y is written as Gx,y = G 2 x,y+rx,y. The leading term G 2 x,y satisfies the estimate see [, p.608] D α x D β yg 2 x,y Cα,β, x y α+β+ 2.3 and the matrix Rx,y satisfies see [, p.60] D α x Dy β Rx,y Cα,β, x y α+β++γ with γ > Note that crlwx = crl x G,G 2,G 3 x,ycrlydy where G,G 2,G 3 = Gx,y T is the row vector of the matrix Gx,y. Then by the estimates 2.3 and 2.4, Lemma 2.8 is applicable for crl wx, and we have crlw C crl L. 2.5 L Combing the estimates 2.2 and 2.5, we complete the proof. 3. Hardy-type ineqalities for vector fields with L p data To show the Hardy-type ineqalities for vector fields with L p data, we first give the estimate on the vector field itself by the L norm of the operators div and crl. Lemma 3.. Assme that the domain satisfies the assmption O, and let C with ν = 0 on. Then for any p < 3/2 we have Cp, div L + crl L, 3. where the constant C depends only on p and the domain. Proof. From the fndamental theorem of vector calcls, it follows that 4π = x y divydy+crl crlydy + v, 3.2 x y where the fnction v is defined by vx = x y ν yds y. We estimate each term in 3.2. The L p estimates on the first and the second terms in the right side of 3.2 can be obtained by applying the Minkowski s integral ineqality.
HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS 7 Therefore, it is necessary to show the estimate on vx. By Lemma A. in Appendix in [8] and by Claim in the proof of Theorem. in [8], for < p < 3/2 we have vx Cp, ν W /p,p Cp, J W /p,p, 3.3 where J is defined by J = 2π ν, grad divdy crl r r crldy. We now estimate J, and let w = x y divdy. Green s formla and the trace theorem in W,q yield that w ν Cp, w L p + div W,q, 3.4 W /p,p where q is the exponent conjgate to p, denotes the dal space of. Using the Minkowski s integral ineqality again, we get w Cp, div L. 3.5 Since W,r is continosly embedded into L for r > 3, L is continosly embedded into W,r. Hence, for any < p < 3/2, 3.4 and 3.5 yield that ν x y div C div L. 3.6 W /p,p The trace theorem [8, Lemma ] in the space {,div } gives crldy W ν, crl Cp, r crl /p,p r crldy. Ths the Minkowski s integral ineqality, for < p < 3/2, implies that crldy W ν, crl Cp, crl L r. 3.7 /p,p From 3.6 and 3.7, we obtain the estimate on J, J W /p,p Cp, div L + crl L. 3.8 Ths from 3.3 and 3.8 we obtain 3. if < p < 3/2. For p = we apply Hölder s ineqality in 3., and hence we finish or proof. We now show the Hardy-type ineqalities with L p data for the vectors. Theorem 3.2. Assme that the domain satisfies the assmption O with the origin 0. Let W,p,R 3 with < p < 3/2 and ν = 0 on in the sense of trace. Then there exists a positive constant C depending only on p and the domain sch that Cp, div + crl. 3.9
8 HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS Proof. Since the domain is in C 2 class, there exist a positive constant ǫ being sfficiently small and a C 2 diffeomorphism that straightens the bondary in the neighborhood N := {x : distx, ǫ} of the bondary. The nmber ǫ depends on the domain. Case i: d := dist0, > 0. Decomposing the integral and then by Minkowski s ineqality, we get where the fnction η is defined by η + η, η x, η x = in B d/2, sppη B d, Dη 4 d. 3. For the first term in the right side of 3.0, applying the classical Hardy ineqality and sing the W,p estimate for vector fields with the tangential components on the bondary vanishing, we have η Cp, η Cp, div + crl The estimate on the last term of 3.0 is easy to obtain since η = 0 in the neighborhood of the origin, and ths η Cp, div Cp, + crl. In this case, the ineqality 3.9 follows immediately. Case ii: 0. We now consider the problem in the neighborhood N of 0 and take the grid of the crvatre lines as the crvilinear coordinate system. Note that the forms of the divergence and the crl are invariant nder orthogonal transformations. Therefore, withot loss of generality, we assme the nit inward normal vector of at the point 0 is k = 0,0,. We introdce new variables y and y 2 sch that ry,y 2 represents the portion of near 0 with r0,0 = 0 and the y and y 2 crves on are the lines of principle crvatres. By the rotations, we assme one of the principle direction at 0 is e = i =,0,0, the other principle direction is e 2 = j = 0,,0. We take the diffeomorphism map F near bondary as follows: x = Fy = ry,y 2 +y 3 ny,y 2, 3.2 where ny,y 2 is the nit inner normal vector at the point ry,y 2. Let Then we get G ij y = i Fy j Fy, Gy = G yg 22 y.. G ii y = +o y. 3.3 Let ûy be the representation of the vector x nder the new coordinate framework {E,E 2,E 3 }, that is ûy = û ye +û 2 ye 2 +û 3 ye 3 = x.
HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS 9 Let t = B t X 0 with B r = B r 0 the ball center 0 and radis r, and assme that F defined by 3.2 maps some domain ǫ R 3 + onto a sbdomain ǫ, maps the domain ǫ/2 R 3 + onto a sbdomain ǫ/2. We decompose the integral by two parts: where η 2 x satisfies η 2 + η 2 0 η 2 x, η 2 x = in ǫ/2, sppη 2 ǫ, Dη 2 4 ǫ We extend the vector û on ǫ to the lower half space { û y,y 2,y 3,û 2 y,y 2,y 3,û 3 y,y 2,y 3 if y ũy = ǫ R 3 +, û y,y 2, y 3, û 2 y,y 2, y 3,û 3 y,y 2, y 3 if y ǫ R and take the even extension for ˆη 2 y = η 2 x on ǫ { ˆη 2 y,y 2,y 3 if y η 2 y = ǫ R 3 +, ˆη 2 y,y 2, y 3 if y ǫ R 3. Since η 2 ũ W,p 0 R 3, the classical Hardy ineqality gives that η 2 ũ C D η 2 ũ y L p R 3 div C y η 2 ũ L p R 3 + crl y η 2 ũ L p R L p R 3 The extensions of the vector û and the fnction ˆη 2 imply that div y η 2 ũ L p R 3 div 2 y û L p + ˆη ǫ 2û L p ǫ. 3.7 The representation of the div operator nder the crvilinear coordinate system shows that div y û L p 4ǫ ǫ L p ǫ +Cp, div x L p + ǫ L p ǫ. 3.8 The last term of 3.7 can be estimated by ˆη 2 û L p ǫ Cǫ,p, L p ǫ. Combing the above three ineqalities, we now ths have div y η 2 ũ L p R 3 4ǫ +Cp,ǫ, div x + Cp, div + crl, where we have chosen ǫ being small and let ǫ be fixed. Similarly, we can get the estimate for the crl part crl y η 2 ũ L p R 3 div Cp, + crl.
0 HARDY-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR VECTOR FIELDS IN BOUNDED DOMAINS By the differmorphism mapping 3.2, then sing the estimates on the div part and the crl part we have η 2 Cp η 2 ũ y Cp, div + crl. L p R 3 At last, combing the estimate on the last term of 3.6 η 2 Cǫ,p, div Cp, + crl, the ineqality 3.9 follows and the proof is completed. Remark 3.3. The conclsion of Theorem 3.2 is still tre for the vector fields with the normal components on the bondary vanishing nder the assmption that the domain is simply-connected. The difference of the proof is replaced the extension 3.5 by { û y,y 2,y 3,û 2 y,y 2,y 3,û 3 y,y 2,y 3 if y ũy = ǫ R 3 +, û y,y 2, y 3,û 2 y,y 2, y 3, û 3 y,y 2, y 3 if y ǫ R 3. Acknowledgments.
