1 THE EVENT VOL. 3/2012 Enhancing Quality, Embracing Transformation KLIUC signs MoUs International Conference - LANCOMM KIIC 2011
2 Greetings! Happy New Year 2012! The year 2011 was indeed an eventful one for all of us at KLIUC. On the 19th and 20th October 2011, w e h a v e s u c c e s s f u l l y o r g a n i s e d o u r i n a u g u r a l International Conference on Language and Communication (LANCOMM2011) at the Palm Garden Hotel, Putrajaya. The theme of the conference was Embracing Challenges in Current Trends. It was a fruitful event as there were 130 presenters and participants from Malaysia as well as from various countries such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, France, Africa to name a few. I hope that KLIUC will organise and host more such events in the future. Besides that, we also witnessed a few more signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various universities, namely the Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Changjiang Engineering Vocational College and Suizhou Vocational & Technical College. We also signed MoUs with the Department of Fisheries, Malaysia and the Department of Adult and Higher Education (DAHE) of Bhutan. We hope to expand our collaborative ties with more industries and institutions both at the national and international levels. I also want to congratulate the Research Management Centre (RMC) of KLIUC and the organising committee for the inception of KLIUC Innovation and Invention Competition (KIIC2011) on the 20th December There were 28 inventions and innovations showcased in the competition. I believe that RMC and KLIUC will bring such like events to greater heights where students and lecturers are able to take part in future competitions or exhibitions both at the national and international levels. Lastly, I take this opportunity to wish all KLIUC members and students a prosperous and successful year of the Dragon as we ushered in the Chinese New Year. The Chinese Spring Festival was celebrated joyously on 17th January Let s forge ahead and achieve greater heights. Patron Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Abdul Hamid Advisor & Chief Editor Assoc. 17 On 11th January 2012, a Masquerade N i g h t w a s o r g a n i s e d b y t h e International Students Association (ISA) of KLIUC at the Multi Purpose Hall. It was a mesmerizing night as the participants must wear their masks before entering the hall. There were group performances which wowed the audience; live performances of Snake and Magic Shows were also performed at that night. Apart from the performances, there was an Open Floor Dance for the students and staff of KLIUC. To wrap up the night, the Best Dressed Award Presentation was given out and the Best Dressed were crowned as the King and Queen of KLIUC. The Indian Society of KLIUC and students from all cultures and nationalities joined in to celebrate the Ponggal Celebration on 20th Januar y 2012 at KLIUC Campus. Ponggal is a har vest festival celebrated by the Indians. In Tamil, Ponggal means boiling over or spill over. The boiling of milk in the clay pot symbolizes material abundance for the household. Ponggal is traditionally intended to thank the Sun God for the har vest. It falls on the first day of the Tamil month of Thai (Januar y 14 or 15).
