TORIC H-VECTOR AND CHOW BETTI NUMBER OF DUAL HYPERIMPLICE CHARLE WANG AND JOEPHINE YU arxv: v1 [math.co] 14 Jul 017 Abstract. The torc h-umbers of a dual hypersmplex ad the Chow Bett umbers of the ormal fa of a hypersmplex are the raks of tersecto cohomology ad Chow cohomology respectvely of the torus orbt closure of a geerc pot the Grassmaa. We gve explct formulas for these umbers. We also show that smlar formulas hold for the coordator umbers of type A lattces. 1. Itroducto The hypersmplex k, s the covex hull of all 0/1-vectors R wth exactly k 1 s. The 1 dmesoal complex projectve torc varety, X k,, correspodg to the ormal fa of k, s the closure of the torus orbt of a geerc pot the Grassmaa Gr k, (C. Furthermore, X k, s sgular uless k = 1 or k = 1, whe k, s a smplex. For smooth torc varetes assocated to the ormal fa of a smplcal polytope, the raks of cohomology groups of the torc varety are the h-umbers of the polytope, whch deped oly o the face umbers of the polytope. For sgular torc varetes, whch correspod to o-smplcal polytopes, taley troduced the torc h-umbers, whch are the raks of tersecto cohomology groups of the torc varety [ta87]. These umbers ca also be computed combatorally from the face lattce of the polytope. We gve a ew proof of the formula, orgally due to Jojc [Joj07], for torc h-vectors of dual hypersmplces. Fulto ad turmfels showed that the ratoal Chow cohomology rg of a complete torc varety cocdes wth the space of Mkowsk weghts, whch are fuctos o the set of coes of the correspodg fa that satsfy certa balacg codtos [F97]. We prove a formula for the Chow Bett umbers of ormal fas of hypersmplces by gvg a bass for the Mkowsk weght space. The d-dmesoal dplo-smplex s the covex hull of the shortest vectors the lattce A d. Its Ehrhart seres couts the lattce pots of a gve dstace from the org ad s called the growth seres of the lattce. We prove the formula for ths growth seres stated by Coway ad loae [C97] based o the work of O Keeffe [O K95]. The proof s closely related to the torc h umbers of dual hypersmplces.. Torc h-umbers of (k, I [ta87], taley defed the torc h-umbers of a polytope va ts face poset. They cocde wth the raks of (eve dmeso tersecto cohomology groups of the torc varety of the polytope s ormal fa. Date: July 17, Mathematcs ubject Classfcato: 5B1, 14M5. 1
CHARLE WANG AND JOEPHINE YU Two polyomals, h(l, x ad g(l, x, are defed ductvely o Eulera posets L as follows 1. For each Eulera poset L, let 0 ad 1 deote the least ad greatest elemets of L respectvely, [ 0, p] = {q L : q p} for p L, ad rak(p = rak[ 0, p] where the rak of a graded poset s oe less tha the umber of elemets ay maxmal cha. The h(1, x = g(1, x = 1, where 1 deotes the oe elemet poset For rak(l > 0: (1 h(l, x = g([ˆ0, p], x(x 1 rak 1 rak(p 1 p L { 1} For rak(l > 0, d = rak(l 1, ad h(p, x = h 0 + h 1 x + + h d x d : ( g(l, x = h 0 + (h 1 h 0 x + (h h 1 x + + (h m h m 1 x m where m = d/. ee [ta1, 3.16] for explct examples. For a polytope P wth face lattce L ad h polyomal h(l, x = h 0 + h 1 x h d x d, the sequece of coeffcets (h 0, h 1,..., h d of h s called the torc h-vector of P, where d = rak(l 1 = dm(p. It s symmetrc (h = h d for all 0 d ad umodal (1 = h 0 h 1 h (d 1/ [ta87]. For a smplcal polytope P, the torc h-vector cocdes wth the usual h-vector defed by the coeffcets of (3 (x 1 d dm F = h 0 x d + h 1 x d h d. face F P A d-dmesoal polytope s called quas-smplcal or d smplcal f all of ts faces of dmeso d are smplces. Equvaletly, all ts facets are smplcal polytopes. For a quas-smplcal polytope P, the frst half of the torc h-vector cocdes wth the frst half of the usual h-vector, whch follows from comparg (1 ad (3 ad usg that the g polyomal for smplces s the costat polyomal 1. Lemma.1. For 0 k, the polytope k, s quas-smplcal. Proof. We wll show that k, s quas-smple,.e. every edge s cotaed exactly d 1 -faces. By [F97], every face of k, s of the form F I,J, where I < k ad J < k. I partcular, a edge of k, has the form F I,J where I J =, I = k 1 ad J = k 1. For a edge F I,J, ay -face cotag the edge has the form F I,J where I I, J J, ad I + J = 3, so t s obtaed by deletg a sgle elemet from ether I or J. ce I + J =, there are exactly -faces cotag each edge of k,. Let the r th etry of the torc h-vector of P be deoted by h r (P. The followg follows from [Joj07, Theorem 5]. We gve a ew proof here. ee Table 1 o 8 for examples. Theorem. (Torc h umbers. For ay 1 k /, r f 0 r k 1 h r ( k, = k 1 (. f k r 1 The polyomal h correspods to f [ta1, ta87] ad h [Kal88]
Proof. Let 0 r k 1. The k, has f r = r+1 ( ( r+1 = r+1 r+1 faces of dmeso r. Let f(x = x 1 + r=0 f r x r. ce k, s quas-smplcal, t suffces to compute the r th etry of the usual h-vector by the coeffcet of x 1 r f(x 1. ce f cocdes wth (x+ for the k hghest degree terms, the coeffcets of x 1 r f ad x (x+1 cocde. It s straghtforward to check that (x 1 ( x 1 j=0 x 1 j ad (x + 1 cocde for the k hghest degree terms, ad ths gves the desred torc h-umbers for 0 r k 1. Now suppose k r. The sum of torc h-umbers s the value of the h-polyomal at x = 1. By (1, the oly ozero cotrbutos to h at x = 1 come from corak oe elemets. Evaluatg the g-polyomal ( at x = 1 gves the mddle coeffcet of the h-polyomals. Thus the sum of the torc h-umbers of a polytope P s the sum of the mddle h-umbers of the facets of P. Each of the k facets of k, s somorphc to the free sum k 1 k 1. The h-polyomal of a free sum s the product of h-polyomals [Kal88, Remark 3, p.05], so each k 1 k 1 has h-polyomal (x k x + 1 (x k x + 1, whch has mddle coeffcet k. Thus the sum of torc h-umbers of ( k, s equal to k k. ce the torc h-vector s umodal ad h k 1 = h k = k 1 from above, we have k 1 (4 h k + + h k 1 ( k wth equalty f ad oly f h k = = h k 1 = k 1. O the other had, ( k 1 k k = ( (k 1 k 1 ad k 1 j=0 j = k 1 (k, so ( k 1 h k + + h k 1 = k k + (k 1 k 1 j=0 ( j = = k 1 = ( k ( ( (. Thus the equalty (4 s tght, ad h k = = h k 1 = k Chow-Bett umbers The Chow-Bett umber, β r,k,, of the hypersmplex (k, s the rak of the ratoal Chow cohomology group, A r (X k,, of X k,, the torc varety assocated to the ormal fa of k,. The group A r (X k, s free abela ad s aturally somorphc to the group of ratoal valued Mkowsk weghts o the codmeso-r coes the ormal fa of k, [F97]. Fulto ad turmfels computed β r,k, for small values of k ad ad asked whether there exst ce geeral formulas. We gve such formulas Theorem 3.1. The codmeso-r coes the ormal fa of k, are dexed by pars (I, J where I ad J are dsjot subsets of {1,,..., } wth (5 I + J = r 1, I < k, ad J < k. We defe the level, l r,k, (I, J, of a par (I, J to be the dfferece betwee I ad ts maxmum possble value satsfyg (5. For example, for = 8, k = 3, r =, we have 3
4 CHARLE WANG AND JOEPHINE YU I + J = 8 1 = 5, ad I < 3, J < 8 3 = 5, so 1 I. Thus ({1, }, {3, 4, 5} s at level 0 whle ({1}, {, 3, 4, 5} s at level 1. It follows from the descrpto of the faces ad the ormal fa of k, that a Mkowsk weght o codmeso r coes s a fuctos c o the set of ordered pars as (5 satsfyg the followg balacg codtos [F97] (6 (7 (8 c(ax, B c(ay, B = c(a, Bx c(a, By f A < k 1 ad B < k 1 c(i, J = c(i, J f I = k 1 c(i, J = c(i, J f J = k 1 where Ax deotes A {x}. The followg s our ma result about Chow-Bett umbers. We oly cosder 1 k because k, ad k, are somorphc. We have β 0,k, = 1 for all k ad because costats are the oly Mkowsk weghts o the full dmesoal coes of a complete fa. Theorem 3.1 (Chow-Bett umbers. For 1 k, r 1 f 1 r k k 1 ( β r,k, = f k < r < k r 1 f k r 1 A bass for the Chow cohomology A r (X k, over Q s gve by the followg Mkowsk weghts c r,k, defed as follows for (I, J satsfyg (5 { c r,k, 1 f I J ad J = l r,k, (I, J (I, J = 0 otherwse where rus over all subsets of {1,,..., } of sze at most r 1, k 1, ad r 1 respectvely for the three cases. Note that the umber of levels for the (I, J s that appear these three cases are r, k, ad r respectvely. Proof. We frst show that the c r,k, are Mkowsk weghts,.e. they satsfy (6, (7, ad (8 above. We ofte wrte c stead of c r,k, to smplfy otato. Codto (7 oly apples whe I = k 1 at level 0. The c (I, J = 1 ff I, so (7 holds. mlarly, codto (8 oly apples whe J = k 1 at hghest level. If s less tha the umber of levels, the c (I, J = 0 for all (I, J. If s equal to the umber of levels, the c takes 0/1 values wth c (I, J = 1 ff J. I ether case, (8 s satsfed. Fally, we look at cases where codto (6 apples. Let A, B, x, y be dsjot wth A < k 1, B < k 1, ad x, y are sgletos. The we have the followg cases: (c (Ax, B = 1 ad x The c (A, Bx = 1; c (Ay, B = c (A, By = 0. (c (Ax, B = 1 ad x / The ecessarly y /, so c (Ay, B = 1 ad c (A, Bx = c (A, By = 0. (c (Ax, B = 0 ad x The c (A, Bx = c (Ay, B = c (A, By = 0..
(c (Ax, B = 0 ad x / If c (Ay, B = 1, the ths s covered by the frst two cases above by terchagg x ad y, so we may assume that c (Ay, B = 0. If y, the c (A, Bx = 0 ad c (A, By = 0. If y /, the c (A, Bx = c (A, By. I each of the cases above, (6 s satsfed. Thus, the fuctos c are Mkowsk weghts. We ow show that the c are learly depedet. We wll use the followg result of de Cae o set-cluso matrces: Let W,j ( be the 0/1 matrx whose rows ad colums are dexed by subsets of {1,,..., } of sze ad j respectvely where W A,B = 1 f A B ad 0 otherwse. The the rak of W,j ( s whe j ad + j [dc01]. Fx r, k, ad. Let M be a matrx whose colums are dexed by pars (I, J satsfyg (5 ad rows by subsets {1,,..., } of sze less tha the umber of levels, wth etry M,(I,J = c (I, J. We order the sets from smallest to largest ad the pars (I, J by the sze of J. The the matrx M s block lower tragular where the th dagoal block ( 0 has rows dexed by sets of sze ad the colums by pars (I, J at level. I the th block, M,(I,J = 1 f ad oly f J, so the colums of the th blocks are exactly the same (wth repetto as the colums of the set-cluso matrx W,j ( where j s the sze of J at level. To complete the proof that the th block has rak, whch s the umber of rows, we check that + j each of the followg cases. Recall that we are assumg k k. (1 r < k The maxmum I s k 1, so the mmum J s r k. For (I, J at level, we have j = J = r k +. (1 r k The umber of levels s r, so < r, ad + j = r k + < r k + r = (k r. (k < r < k The umber of levels s k, so < k, ad + j = r k + < r k + k = (r k <. ( k r 1 For (I, J at level, we have j = J =. The umber of levels s r, so < r /. Thus + j = <. Ths proves that the c are learly depedet. We wll ow show that the fuctos c spa Mkowsk weght space. Frst cosder whe k r 1. The oly codto (6 apples. We wll choose values for a Mkowsk weght o the pars (I, J oe level at a tme. At level 0, J = 0 ad I = r 1, ad we choose the values o each of these pars (I, depedetly, gvg us r 1 degrees of freedom. After we have chose values at level, the equatos (6 wth LH at level (wth A = r 1 leave oe degree of freedom at level + 1 for each A. Ths gves ( r 1 degrees of freedom. Cotug ths fasho, we get to level r 1 where I =, wth 1 degree of freedom. Hece the dmeso of Mkowsk weght space s at most r 1, whch cocdes wth the lower boud prove above. Now cosder the case whe k < r < k. I ths case the codtos (6 ad (7 both apply, but (8 does ot. The level 0 has I = k 1, so the codto (7 leaves k 1 degrees of ( freedom at level 0. Usg codto (6, the ext levels have degrees of freedom equal to ( k, ( k 3,..., respectvely up to 0 = 1 whe I =. Ths gves the desred upper boud o dmeso, whch s k 1. Fally, let 1 r k. I ths case all three types of codtos (6, (7, ad (8 apply. The same approach as above does ot gve a tght upper boud sce t does ot use codto (8. 5
6 CHARLE WANG AND JOEPHINE YU For 3 t s easy to check that the fuctos c r,k, spa Mkowsk weght space for all possble values of r ad k. Let 4 ad fx 1 r k. The umber of levels s r. Let c be a Mkowsk weght o k,. Defe c o pars (I, J where I, J {1,..., 1}, I + J = ( 1 r 1, I < k, ad J < k by c (I, J = c(i, J. It s straghtforward to check that c s a Mkowsk weght o codmeso r coes of k, 1. For [ 1] wth r 1, the fucto c r,k, 1 s obtaed from c r,k, ths way. Note that the umber of levels s stll r for r, k, 1, so c r,k, 1 s defed. By ducto o the fuctos c r,k, 1 spa the Mkowsk weght space o codmeso r coes for k, 1, ad oly the c wth = r 1 have o-zero coordates at the top level, so there are coeffcets a such that c (I, J = ( [ 1] r 1 a c r,k, 1 (I, J for all (I, J at top level for r, k, 1. Let c 1 = c ( [ 1] r 1 a c r,k,. It s a Mkowsk weght for r, k, wth c 1 (I, J = 0 for all top level coordates (I, J wth J or / I J. Defe a Mkowsk weght c 1 o codmeso r coes of k 1, 1 by c 1(I, J = c 1 (I, J. For = r 1 ad we have = c r,k 1, 1. Note that the umber of levels for r, k 1, 1 s r whe r < k ad (c r,k, {} k 1 whe r = k; ether case {} = r s less tha the umber of levels, so c r,k 1, 1 {} s defed. We ca wrte c 1 = ( [ 1] r a c r,k 1, 1. Let c = c 1 ( [ 1] r a c r,k,. By costructo, c (I, J = 0 o all coordates (I, J at top level wth I. ce all these c are also 0 o coordates wth / I, the c s a Mkowsk weght that s 0 o all (I, J at the top level. The codto (8 o c becomes, whe I = k, 0 = c (I, Jx c (I, Jy. Ths allows us to apply the same argumet as above, usg the weghts c where = r, to get a Mkowsk weght whch s 0 o all (I, J wth I k. We ca repeat ths process utl we have = r 1 (r 1 = 0. Whe we reach ths case, we wll have a Mkowsk weght whch s 0 o all (I, J wth I k (r 1. By codto (8, we get a multple of the Mkowsk weght c. Thus, we have wrtte c = <r a c as a lear combato of the fuctos c, so the c spa the space of Mkowsk weghts. 4. Coordator umbers of A 1 lattces Let be a teger 3. The type A 1 lattce s the sublattce of Z spaed by the type A 1 roots {e e j : j}. The type A 1 lattce s the dual lattce to A 1, whch we wll detfy wth the mage of the orthogoal projecto of Z oto the hyperplae {x R : x x = 0}. The shortest vectors the A 1 lattce are the projecto of {e 1, e 1,..., e, e } Z alog the drecto (1, 1,..., 1 oto the hyperplae above. Ay collecto of 1 learly depedet vectors amog them form a Z-bass of the lattce, that s, the shortest vectors form a umodular system. Ther covex hull s the 1-dmesoal dplo-smplex whch we deote by,. It s polar to the followg slce of the -cube [ 1, 1] {x R : x x = 0 ad 1 x 1 for all } whch we wll deote by, by abuse of otato. Whe s eve, ths s a traslate of the usual hypersmplex dlated by. The coordato sequece of the type A 1 lattce wth respect to the shortest vectors s the sequece (0, (1, (,... where (k s the umber of lattce pots o the boudary of k,. Its geeratg fucto G(x := k 0 (kxk s called the growth seres.
h(x (1 x By Ehrhart theory G(x = where h(x s a polyomal of degree <, called the coordator polyomal. The coeffcets of h(x = h 0 + h 1 x + + h 1 x 1 are called the coordator umbers of the A 1 lattce. Usg results of O Keeffe [O K95], Coway ad loae computed the coordator umbers of the lattce A 1 for small values of [C97]. Here we prove the geeral formula. Theorem 4.1 (Coordator umbers. For ay postve teger, the r th coordator umber of A 1 s equal to r f 0 r 1 ad 1 r f 1 r 1. For a d-dmesoal smplcal complex R, the f-polyomal s f(x = σ xd dm(σ ad the h-polyomal s h(x = f(x 1. The Ehrhart h -polyomal of s h (x = (1 x d+1 (1 + k>1 k Z m x k. 7 A j-dmesoal umodular smplex cotrbutes x j+1 (x 1 d j to the h-polyomal ad (1 x d j to the h -polyomal. If cossts oly of umodular smplces, the by cluso-exluso, we have h(x = x d+1 h ( 1 x. Also see [ABH + 11, Theorem 3] ad refereces there. The umerator of the growth seres s the Ehrhart h -polyomal of the boudary of the dplo-smplex. By the dscusso above t suffces to compute the h-polyomal of a tragulato of the boudary of the dplo-smplex, whch s paldromc. Proof. Frst cosder the case whe s eve. The dplo-smplex, s quas-smplcal by Lemma.1. Let be the tragulato of the boudary of,. The vertces form a umodular system, so s umodular. Moreover the tragulato does ot troduce ew faces of dmeso sce all faces of codmeso are already smplcal. The h-vector of s paldromc ad determed by f 0, f 1,..., f. ce the torc h- vector of, s also determed by the frst half of the f-vector the same way, the h-vector of cocdes wth the torc h-vector of the polytope,, hece we have the same formula prove earler Theorem.. O the other had the coordator umbers cocde wth the h-umbers as explaed above. Now suppose s odd. The o vertex of the -cube [ 1, 1] les o the hyperplae x x = 0. Each face of the -cube ether tersects the hyperplae at a relatve teror pot or does ot tersect at all. The vertces of, are tersectos of the terors of some edges of the -cube wth a hyperplae. ce the -cube s smple, each edge s cotaed 1 facets. The each vertex of, s cotaed 1 facets as well. Thus, s smple, ad ts dual, s smplcal. The hyperplae x x = 0 meets the relatve terors of all faces of dmeso of the -cube. The the dplo-smplex, has faces of dmeso for each 0. 0 r k 1, the r th h-umber of, s r By the same computato as Theorem. (for the case whe for 0 r. ee also the OEI sequece A0461 at

McCoell showed that the ratoal homology of torc varetes s ot a combatoral varat [McC89]. I fact, the same example shows that the Chow-Bett umbers are also ot a combatoral varat.
