SYMMETRIC, SEPARABLE EQUIVALENCE OF RINGS arxiv: v1 [math.ra] 25 Oct 2017 LARS KADISON ADDENDUM TO HOKKAIDO MATHEMATICAL J. 24 (1995), Abstract. We continue a study of separable equivalence and prove that symmetric separable equivalent rings A and B are linked by a Frobenius bimodule A P B and that A is P-separable over B. 1. Introduction Separable and symmetric separable equivalence are formally defined in [9, 12] for finite-dimensional algebras with some interesting applications of separable equivalence in [9, 2, 12] and other publications in modular representation theory. The same concept for rings is defined in [5, Def. 6.1] and its tweek in [5, Prop. 6.3], although one of the purposes of this addendum is to make this more clear mathematically, and provide most of the details of the structure referred to in the paragraph before [5, Prop. 6.1] (and the notes to [4]). We then characterise symmetric separably equivalent rings A and B asbeinglinkedbyafrobeniusbimodule A P B, itsdual B Q A, suchthata is P-separable over B and B is Q-separable over A. In the terminology of [3, Caenepeel-K.] the bimodule P is a biseparable Frobenius bimodule; unlike a Morita context bimodule, it is not in general faithfully balanced, nor are the two split bimodule epis ν : P B Q A and µ : Q A P B in general associative. Weshow that P B Q = EndP B as rings in terms of a µ-multiplication that generalises and symmetrises E- multiplication [5, 6]. Symmetrically, Q A P with the ν-multiplication is isomorphic as rings to EndQ A. We provide the details of the proof that separable equivalence and symmetric separable equivalence coincide as notions for symmetric algebras, e.g. a unimodular Hopf algebra with antipode an inner automorphism. 2 2 LARS KADISON 2. Preliminaries on separably divides In order to halv the mathematical workload, it is useful to divide the notion of separable equivalence into two equal parts. At the same time, we establish some fixed notation used throughout the paper. Suppose A and B are rings. They are said to be linked if there is a bimodule AP B or a bimodule B Q A. A bimodule A P B is said to be 1-sidedly finite projective if the restricted one-sided modules P B and A P are both finitely generated and projective. For example, if A is an algebra, the natural bimodule A A A is 1-sidedly finite projective, but projective if and only if A is a separable Z-algebra. Definition 2.1. The ring A separably divides B if they are linked by 1-sidedly finite projective bimodules A P B and B Q A such that there is a split epimorphism ν : P B Q A of A-A-bimodules [2]. The ring A symmetric separably divides B if A separably divides B and additionally the functors P = A P B and Q = B Q A are an adjoint pair (P, Q) between the categories of all modules, A-Mod and B-Mod, with ν the counit of adjunction. The data (P,Q,ν) will be called a context as in Morita theory. Lemma 2.2. The context modules Q A and A P are generators. The natural mappings λ : A EndP B and ρ : A End B Q are injective. Proof. Note the mapping P Hom(Q A,A A ) given by p ν(p B ), which is an A-B-bimodule homomorphism. Since ν is surjective, it follows that there are z i P, w i Q such that i ν(z i w i ) = 1 A, i.e., the trace ideal = A. That A P is a generator has a similar proof. The natural mapping is of course given by λ a (p) = ap. If λ a = 0 in End A P, the abelongs to the annihilator of the A-module P, a generator, so A A n AP, and a = 0 when applied to 1 A. The last claim is similarly proven. The center of a bimodule A W A is the set of elements w W such that aw = wa for all a A. The next lemma explains more fully the elements of adjunction in [5, Def. 6.1], useful for computations. Proposition 2.3. Given a context ( A P B, B Q A,ν : A P B Q A A A A ), the functor P: B-Mod A-Mod is a left adjoint of Q with counit of adjunction ν if and only if there is an elementin the center i q i p i

ADDENDUM: SYMMETRIC, SEPARABLE EQUIVALENCE OF RINGS 3 Q A P such that for every p P,q Q we have ν(p q i)p i = p (1) i q iν(p i q) = q (2) i Proof. ( ) These are the two triangular identities [10, p. 85] characterising adjunction, for the unit of adjunction η B : b i bq i A p i, η : 1 QP, and the counit of adjunction ε A = ν, ε : PQ 1. The triangular identities are given functorially by (εp)(pη) = 1 P and (Qε)(ηQ) = 1 Q. In the usual set-up of adjoint functors, there is a natural isomorphism Hom( A P B M, B N) = Hom( B M, B Q A N) for each B-module M and A-module N. Letting M = B Q and N = A A obtains counit of adjunction ν : P B Q A as the inverse image of id Q, which is in End( B Q A ), so by naturality ν is a bimodule homomorphism. Similarly, letting M = B B and N = B P obtains the unit of adjunction i q i A p i Q A P, via the usual identification Hom( B B, B M) = M, as the image of id P, and is in the center. ( ) This is a healthy pedestrian exercise showing via forward mapping inverse mapping Hom( A P B M, B N) = Hom( B M, B Q A N) (3) Φ M,N : f (m i q i A f(p i B m)) Ψ M,N : g (p m (ν id N )(p g(m)) where Eq. (1) gives Ψ M,N Φ M,N = id and Eq. (2) gives Φ M,N Ψ M,N = id (using obvious notation for elements of a set). Note that the proof does not make use of the conditions, split epi or epi, on the homomorphism ν. Lemma 2.4. Given adjoint functors (P, Q), the counit of adjunction is a split epi if any one bimodule homomorphism φ : P B Q A is a split epi. Proof. From Eq. (3) with M = B Q and N = A A, we obtain from naturality Hom( A P B Q A, A A A ) = End B Q A (4) as abelian groups via for each g End B Q A, Ψ Q,A (g) = ν(p g) = φ : P B Q A. If h is a splitting for φ then (P g)h is a splitting for ν.

4 LARS KADISON Lemma 2.5. Thereis ab-a-bimoduleisomorphismq = Hom( A P, A A) given by q ν( B q). Proof. An inverse is given by g Hom( A P, A A) Q i q ig(p i) using Eqs. (1) and (2). A second proof: from the hom-tensor adjoint relation, P has right adjoint the functor (of coinduction) B Hom( A P, A ), which is naturally isomorphic to B Hom( A P, A A) A ; whence the bimodule isomorphism in the lemma by uniqueness of adjoint functors [1]. 3. Preliminaries on separable equivalence We continue to establish fixed notation used in the rest of the paper. Definition 3.1. Rings A and B are separably equivalent if A separably divides B with context split epi ν : P B Q A and B separably divides A with context split epi µ : B Q A P B B B B. Rings A and B are symmetric separably equivalent if A symmetric separably divides B with adjoint functors (P = A P B,Q = B Q A ) and B symmetric separably divides A with adjoint functors (Q, P) [5, Def. 6.1, Remark6.1]. In other words, the functors P and Q between A-Mod and B-Mod are Frobenius functors [11], i.e., adjoint in either order. 1 Shared properties of separably equivalent rings include global dimension [5, Corollary 6.1] and other homological properties of rings defined in [5, Theorem 6.1], such as a ring whose flat modules are projective (the converse being generally true) which characterises the von Neumann regular ring. Proposition 3.2. There is a ring structure on P B Q with multiplication defined by (p B q)(p B q ) = pµ(q A p ) B q, and linearly extended (call it µ-multiplication). The ring P B Q is unital if and only if A and B are symmetrical separably equivalent. Proof. A short computation depending only on µ being an A-bimodule homomorphism shows that the µ-multiplication is an associative multiplication. ( ) By Proposition 2.3 there is unit of adjunction j p j 1 A word about differing terminologies: separable equivalent is referred to as split separable equivalence in Section 6 of[4], and symmetric separable equivalent as finite separable equivalence in[4, 5]. Perhaps a better name in the future would be Frobenius-separable equivalence for two reasons: the theorem below and that an equivalence is a reflexive, symmetric and transitive relation on sets. Transitivity is left as an exercise to the reader.

ADDENDUM: SYMMETRIC, SEPARABLE EQUIVALENCE OF RINGS 5 q j P A Q for the adjoint pair (Q,P), which satisfy the triangle identities µ( A p j )q j = id Q (5) j p j µ(q j A ) = id P (6) j Define 1 P Q = j p j B q j. Then for all p P,q Q, 1 P Q (p q) = p q follows from Eq. (6) and (p q)1 P Q = p q follows from Eq. (5). ( ) If we show that p B q = 0 for all q Q implies p = 0, then the steps in the last sentence reverse to show Eqs. (5) and (6). This follows if f(p) = 0 for all f Hom( A P, A A) implies p = 0 since A P is finite projective with dual projective bases. This follows if Q Hom( A P, A A) given by q ν( B q) is onto, which follows from Lemma 2.5. Similarly, Q A P has ν-multiplication and an identity element 1 = i q i A p i, the unit of adjunction of (P,Q) in Proposition 2.3 satisfying the equations (1) and (2). For an example consider a separable Frobenius extension A B with Frobenius homomorphism E : A B where E B = id B with dual bases {x i },{y i } [5, Prop. 6.1]. Then A and B are symmetric separablyequivalent withcontext P = A A B, Q = B A A, ν : A S A A multiplication and E : A B both split epis. The units of adjunction inp B Q = A B AandQ A P = Aare i x i B y i and1, respectively, with A B A having the E-multiplication. 4. Structure for symmetric separably equivalent rings Recall that a Frobenius bimodule is a bimodule A W B such that W is 1-sidedly finite projective, and Hom(W B,B B ) = Hom( A W, A A) as natural B-A-bimodules [3, 11, 6]. For example, a Frobenius extension A B has the natural bimodule A A B, which is a Frobenius bimodule; a progenerator module M T gives rise to the natural (Morita context) bimodule E M T, where E = EndM T, which is a Frobenius bimodule ([11, Theorem 1.1], [6, Theorem 2.3]). Given rings A and B linked by bimodule A P B, recall that A is A P B - separable over B if the evaluation mapping e, AP B Hom( A P, A A) A e A A A (7) is a bimodule split epi [13]. For example, a ring extension A B is by definition separable if the natural bimodule A A B satisfies the split epi

6 LARS KADISON condition in Eq. (7); or split if the natural bimodule B A A satisfies the split epi condition above [6]. Theorem 4.1. Suppose rings A and B are symmetric separably equivalent with context ( A P B, B Q A,ν : P B Q A,µ : Q A P B, j q i A p i, j p j B q j ), satisfying Eqs. (1), (2), (5) and (6). Then (1) A P B is a Frobenius bimodule; (2) A is P-separable over B; (3) there is a ring isomorphism EndP B = P B Q ; (4) the mapping A λ EndP B is a split, separable Frobenius extension. Proof. The bimodule A P B satisfies by Lemma 2.5 BHom(P B,B B ) A = B Q A = B Hom( A P, A A) A (8) via q µ(q A ) andthemapping q ν( B q)inthe lemma. Since P is 1-sidedly finite projective (indeed progenerator), it is a Frobenius bimodule. The evaluation mapping e in Eq. (7) forms a commutative triangle with the context split epi ν : P B Q A via the bimodule isomorphism in Eq. (8). Thus, A is P-separable over B. The mapping P B Q EndP B given by p B q pµ(q A ) is an isomorphism of A-bimodules, since P B is finite projective, so EndP B = P B Hom(P B,B B )asa-a-bimodules. ButQ = Hom(P B,B B )viaq µ(q A ) as noted before. The inverse mapping, EndP B P B Q is in fact given by α j α(p j) B q j. This is a ring isomorphism since ( k β(p k ) B q k )( α(p j ) B q j ) = j β(p k µ(q k A α(p j ))) B q j = j k,j β(α(p j )) B q j for α,β EndP B. It follows from the endomorphism ring theorem in [6, Theorem 2.5] that λ : A EndP B is a Frobenius extension of rings, since A P B is a Frobenius bimodule. Under an identification of EndP B and P B Q in the previous paragraph, A embeds via a j ap j B q j, and ν : P B Q A is a Frobenius homomorphism, with dual bases tensor p j B q i A p i B q j (9) i,j

ADDENDUM: SYMMETRIC, SEPARABLE EQUIVALENCE OF RINGS 7 by an amusing exercise. It follows from theorems in [13] that A EndP B is a split extension, and the anti-monomorphism ρ : A End B Q is a separable extension (once you apply what s proven for P to Q, see also [7, Theorem 3.1]). But there is an anti-isomorphism of rings, End B Q = Hom( B Q, B B) B Q = P B Q (using Lemma 2.5, p ν( B p)) given by β End B Q is mapped into j p j B β(q j ). Fromtheidentity, j ap j B q j = j p j B q j aforeach a Ait follows thatthe ring extensions A EndP B anda End B Qareisomorphic in the usual terms of commutative diagrams. Hence A EndP B is also a separable ring extension. Similarly (or symmetrically), B Q A is a Frobenius bimodule, B is Q- separable over A, Q A P = EndQ A with ν-multiplication and B EndQ A is a split, separable Frobenius extension. The theorem is useful for showing which properties of symmetrical separably equivalent rings are shared. Since B and EndP B are Morita equivalent, and A EndP B has very special properties, it follows that properties like polynomial identity algebra that are Morita invariants and descend along algebra monomorphisms, are then shared properties of this weaker equivalence. Also Morita invariants like global dimension that descend along projective split, separable or Frobenius extensions are symmetric separable invariants: the first lines of the proof of [5, Theorem 5.1] shows that D(A) D(B) from the Theorem, part (4) above, the reverse inequality follows by symmetry. See also [5, Theorems 5.2 amd 6.1] and [3, Theorem 2.6]. 5. Characterising symmetric separable equivalence In this section we characterise symmetric separable equivalence. One more definition is useful for this objective. Definition 5.1. A 1-sidedly finite projective bimodule A V B is called biseparable if A is V-separable over B and B is Hom(V B,B B )-separable over A [3, Definition 2.4]. Using a reflexive simplification for finite projective modules, this is equivalent to the two evaluation mappings being the split bimodule epimorphisms, (1) A V B Hom( A V, A A) A A A A ; (2) B Hom(V B,B B ) A V B B B B. An example of the definition is the natural bimodule A A B for a split, separable, right and left finite projective ring extension A B [3] Theorem 5.2. The following are equivalent conditions on two rings A and B:

8 LARS KADISON (1) A and B are symmetric separably equivalent; (2) A and B are linked by a Frobenius biseparable bimodule A P B. Proof. ( ) Theorem 4.1 informs us that a context bimodule A P B is Frobenius and A is P-separable over B. Also B is Q-separable over A. Since context bimodule B Q A = B Hom(P B,B B ) A by Lemma 2.5, and context bimodule mapping µ and ν are split epis, it follows that A P B is biseparable. ( ) Suppose B Q A is either the left or right dual of A P B, unique up to isomorphism. Then the associated functors between categories of modules formed by tensoring and denoted as before by P and Q are Frobenius functors, adjoint functors in either order. The counits of adjunction are split epis by Lemma 2.4, since there are split epis P B Q A and Q A P B from the hypothesis that A P B is biseparable. When the characterisation can be simplified to just a biseparable bimodule linking two rings is the question in the title of [3]. A symmetric algebra is an algebra with nondegenerate trace, or Frobenius algebra with Nakayama automorphism an inner automorphism: for example, a unimodular Hopf algebra with antipode S satifying S 2 is conjugation by a grouplike element [6]. The two notions of separable equivalence coincide on the class of symmetric algebras [12]. Suppose k is the ground field of A and B. Then a bimodule A P B has a third B-A-bimodule dual, P := Hom(P,k). In these terms, an algebra A is symmetric if A A A = A A A. Corollary 5.3. A separable equivalence between symmetric algebras A and B is a symmetric separable equivalence. Proof. Since B is a symmetric algebra, the three duals of a bimodule AP B coincide, since BHom(P B,B B ) A = B Hom(P B,B B) A = B P A making use of the hom-tensor adjoint relation [1]. Similarly BHom( A P, A A) A = B P A. Suppose( A V B, B W A,ν : V B W A,µ : W A V B)isacontext for A and B separably equivalent. Then A P B := V W is a Frobenius bimodule, since it is 1-sidely finite projective, and P = W V := Q to which the two ring-theoretic duals are bimodule isomorphic. In this case, the associated functors between module categories P and Q are adjoint in either order. Since P B Q has V B W as a bimodule direct summand, the split epi ν extends to a split epi ν : A P B Q A A A A ;

ADDENDUM: SYMMETRIC, SEPARABLE EQUIVALENCE OF RINGS 9 similarly, one has a split epi µ : B Q A P B B B B extending µ. By Lemma 2.5 the counits of adjunction are split epis. The construction for any algebra A as a subalgebra of a symmetric algebra structure on A A is also noteworthy in this context [8, p. 443]. It is interesting to extend the theory in this paper from module categories and exact functors such as P and Q to general abelian, additive or exact categories [5, 12]. References [1] Anderson and K.
