ROUP 1-COHOMOLOY IS COMPLEMENTED arxiv: v1 [math.r] 28 Oct 2016 PIOTR W. NOWAK ABSTRACT. We show a structural property of cohomology with coefficients in an isometric representation on a uniformly convex Banach space: if the cohomology group H 1,π) is reduced, then, up to an isomorphism, it is a closed complemented, subspace of the space of cocycles and its complement is the subspace of coboundaries. Cohomology with coefficients in Banach modules has recently become an important object of study due to its use in the formulation of Banach space version of Kazhdan s property T), a property that the group 1-cohomology H 1,π) with coefficients in any isometric representation of on a fixed Banach space vanishes. See [5] for a recent survey. This notion generalizes the one of classical Kazhdan s property T) in the setting of unitary representations on Hilbert spaces, see [3]. In that case several structural properties of cohomology are obvious from the Hilbert space structure, however their Banach space counterparts are often non-trivial. An example of such a property is complementability of closed subspaces appearing in the cohomological framework. An important case is that of degree 0: the subspace of invariant vectors E π i.e., the space of 0-cocycles) of an isometric representation π of on E is complemented in the representation space E, whenever E is reflexive [1, 2]. In that case the complement is a π-invariant subspace E π. However, there are no other decompositions of this type known in higher degrees outside the setting of Hilbert spaces. The purpose of this note is to prove the existence of a direct sum decomposition in degree 1. Consider a symmetric probability measure µ on, whose support generates and which is given by a continous compactly supported density on. By A µ π : E E denote the Markov operator associated to π and µ via the Bochner integral A µ πv= π g v dµ. By Z 1,π) and B 1,π) denote the space of 1-cocycles and 1-coboundaries, respectively. Theorem 1. Let be a locally compact, compactly generated group and E be a Banach space. Assume that π is a representation of on E, such that The author was partially supported by Narodowe Centrum Nauki grant DEC- 2013/10/EST1/
2 PIOTR W. NOWAK for some probability measure µ as above on the associated Markov operator satisfies A µ π λ<1. Then, up to isomorphism, 1) Z 1,π)= B 1,π) H 1,π). In particular, 1) holds for every isometric representation π of without almost invariant vectors on a uniformly convex Banach space E. We also show that certain equivariance in the above decomposition corresponds precisely to vanishing of cohomology. Acknowledgements. I would like to thank the Referee for suggesting several improvements. 1. PROOFS Let π be a strongly continuous representation of a compactly generated group on a Banach space E. Let Z 1,π) be the linear space of continuous cocycles for π and let S, satisfying suppµ S, be a fixed compact symmetric generating set. We also assume that the support of µ generates. A specific class of admissible measures that is relevant for our purposes was introduced in [4]. A probability measure µ on is said to be admissible if it is defined by a density function ρ with respect to the Haar measure dh), satisfying α+β ρ=, α+β dh where α, β are continuous, non-negative, compactly supported functions on, such that 1) αe)>0, where e denotes the identity element of ; 2) α dh= 1; 3) for every generator s S we have s β α. Admissibility of a measure is a convenient tool when estimating spectral gaps of the associated Markov operator [4]. A cocycle for π is determined on the generators and we can define a norm on Z 1,π) by the formula z S = sup z s E. s S Let d π : E B 1,π) be the codifferential defined by d π vg)=v π g v. The subspace of coboundaries B 1,π) is the range of d π in Z 1,π). The representation π does not have almost invariant vectors if there exists κ=κπ,s)>0 such that sup s S π s v v κ v for every v E. In particular, if π does not have almost invariant vectors then B 1,π) is closed in the S norm in Z 1,π). In that case the cohomology H 1,π)= Z 1,π)/B 1,π)= Z 1,π)/B 1,π) is said to be reduced.
1-COHOMOLOY IS COMPLEMENTED 3 Proof of Theorem 1. Let µ, ν be probability measures on as before, let µ ν denote the convolution and µ n, n N, denote the convolution powers of µ. Let z µ = z g dµg). Define an affine operator L µ π,z : E E by the formula Lemma 2. Let z, z Z 1,π). Then 1) z+ z ) µ = z µ +z ) µ, 2) L µ π,z+z = L µ π,z+ L µ π,z A µ π, 3) A µ πz ν + z µ = z µ ν, 4) L µ ν π,z = L µ π,zl ν π,z. L µ π,zv= A µ πv+ z µ. Proof. The first two properties are clear, we only prove the remaining two. We have ) A µ πz ν + z µ = π g z h dνh) dµg) + z g dµg) = z gh dνh) dµg) = z µ ν. The last property is then a consequence of the equality L µ ν π,z v= A µ ν π v+ z µ ν = A µ πa ν π v+ Aµ πz ν + z µ = A µ πa ν π v+ zν )+ z µ. Under the assumptions of Theorem 1 the map L µ π,z is a strict contraction. Indeed, µ L π,zv L µ π,zw = A µ πv+ z µ A µ πw z µ µ A π v w. Since µ A µ π λ<1, by the Banach Contraction Principle L π,z has a a unique fixed point bz) E such that bz)=l µ π,zbz). The assignment z bz) is a map b : Z 1,π) E. Define a map P : Z 1,π) B 1,π), Pz=d π bz). We claim that P is a bounded projection onto B 1,π). Lemma 3. If µ A < 1 then P is linear. π Proof. Recall that given µ and z, the fixed point bz) of L µ π,z is given by bz)= lim n L µ π,z) n v= lim n z µn )
4 PIOTR W. NOWAK for any v E. Let z, z be cocycles for π. Then ) bz+ z )= lim L µ n n π,z+z v µ ) ) n = lim L n π,z v+ L µ n µ n π,z v A π) v = bz)+ bz ), since A µ ) n π v tends to 0 by the assumption that A µ π < 1. Lemma 4. If A µ π <1 then P is the identity on the range of d π. Proof. Assume z g = v π g v. Then z µn ) = v π g v dµ n = v A µ n π) v, and the last term tends to 0, so that bz)= v and d π bz)= z. Lemma 5. P is continuous. Proof. We estimate z µ bz) E ) d L µn ) π,z 0,L µn+1 ) π,z 0 z µ E λ ). n Therefore bz) E z µ E 1+ λ n) z S 1+ λ n) and finally Pz S = d π bz) S 2 bz) E 2 z S 1+ λ ). n Let V be the complement of B 1,π) in Z 1,π), then V is isomorphic to H 1,π)= Z 1,π)/B 1,π). This proves the first statement of Theorem 1. To see that the assumptions are always in the case of an isometric representation on a uniformly convex Banach space recall that it was shown in [4] that for an admissible measure µ we have µ A π < 1 whenever the representation π does not have almost invariant vectors. The above estimate of the norm of P is strictly greater than 1. It would be interesting to know whether the coboundaries are in fact 1-complemented in Z 1,π) in the case when H 1,π) 0. Denoting by γ v=π γ v+z γ the affine actions associated to π and z Z 1,π) we have that the following conditions are equivalent: 1) H 1,π)=0, 2) bγ z)= bz) for every γ, where γ z) g = z γg. Indeed, it is straightforward to verify that π γ bz)= bγ z) z γ.
1-COHOMOLOY IS COMPLEMENTED 5 Thus z γ = bz) π γ bz)= Pz) γ if and only if bγ z)= bz) for every γ. In the case when has property T) every cocycle associated to a unitary representation of is a coboundary. Equivalently, has property T) if and only if every affine isometric action of on a Hilbert space has a fixed point. See e.g. [3, Chapter 2]. Therefore the above equivalent conditions are satisfied for every unitary representation π and every cocycle. REFERENCES [1] U. Bader, A. Furman, T. elander, and N.
