FREE GROUP C -ALGEBRAS ASSOCIATED WITH l p arxiv: v3 [math.oa] 12 Jul 2012 RUI OKAYASU Abstract. For every p 2, we give a characterization of positive definite functions on a free group with finitely many generators, which can be extended to the positive linear functionals on the free group C -algebra associated with the ideal l p. This is a generalization of Haagerup s characterization for the case of the reduced free group C -algebra. As a conseuence, the associated C -algebras are mutually non-isomorphic, and they have a uniue tracial state. 1. Introduction N. P. Brown and E. Guentner introduce new C -completion of the group ring of a countable discrete group Γ in [2]. More precisely, for a given algebraic twosided ideal in l (Γ), they define the associated group C -algebra. These recover the full group C -algebra for l (Γ) itself, and the reduced group C -algebra for c c (Γ), respectively. Hence if we take c 0 (Γ) or l p (Γ) with p [1, ) for example, we may obtain new group C -algebra. We remark that a standard characterization of amenability implies that the associated C -algebras of an amenable group are all isomorphic for any ideals. In [2], they also give a characterization of the Haagerup property and Property (T) in terms of ideal completions. In this paper, we study their C -algebra of a free group associated with l p. By [2], for any p [1,2], the group C -algebra of Γ associated with l p is isomorphic to the reduced group C -algebra. Therefore the case where p (2, ) is essential. Our main result is a characterization of positive definite functions on a free group, which can be extended to the positive linear functionals on the free group C - algebra associated with l p. In [5], U. Haagerup gives its characterization for the case of the reduced free group C -algebra. Thus our theorem is a generalization of his result. As a conseuence, the free group C -algebras associated with l p are mutually non-isomorphic for every p [2, ]. We also obtain that for each p [2, ), the free group C -algebra associated with l p has a uniue tracial state. Moreover, we consider algebraic ideals D p (Γ) = ε>0l p ε (Γ) for 1 < p, and D + p (Γ) = ε>0l p+ε (Γ) for 1 p <. Then, by using our characterization, it is also shown that the free group C -algebra associated with D ± p coincides with the free group C -algebra associated with l p Mathematics Subject Classification. 2 2 RUI OKAYASU 2. Preliminaries In this section, we fix the notations for the convenience of the reader and recall some results in [2]. Let Γ be a countable discrete group and π be a unitary representation of Γ on a Hilbert space H. For ξ,η H, we denote the matrix coefficient of π by π ξ,η (s) = π(s)ξ,η. Note that π ξ,η l (Γ), where l (Γ) is the abelian C -algebra of all bounded functions on Γ. Let D be an algebraic two-sided ideal of l (Γ). If there exists a dense subspace H 0 of H such that π ξ,η D for all ξ,η H 0, then π is called D-representation. If D is invariant under the left and right translation of Γ on l (Γ), then it is said to be translation invariant. Throughout this paper, we assume that D is a non-zero translation invariant ideal of l (Γ). For each p [1, ), we denote the norm on l p (Γ) by f p = ( s Γ f(s) p ) 1 p for f l p (Γ). Note that l p (Γ) is a translation invariant ideal of l (Γ). We denote by c 0 (Γ) the of functions on Γ, vanishing at infinity. It is the non-trivial closed translation invariant ideal of l (Γ). Under our assumption, D contains c c (Γ), which is the ideal of all finitely supported functions on Γ. Moreover, if π has a cyclic vector ξ such that π ξ,ξ D, then π is a D-representation with respect to a dense subspace H 0 = span{π(s)ξ : s Γ}. We denote by λ the left regular representation of Γ. It is easy to see that λ is a c c -representation, or a D-representation for any D. The C -algebra C D (Γ) is the C -completion of the group ring CΓ by D, where f D = sup{ π(f) : π is a D-representation} for f CΓ. Note that if D 1 and D 2 are ideals of l (Γ) with D 1 D 2, then there exists the canonical uotient map from C D 1 (Γ) onto C D 2 (Γ). We denote by C (Γ) the full group C -algebra, and by C λ (Γ) the reduced group C -algebra, respectively. In [2], the following results are obtained: C (Γ) = C l (Γ) and C λ (Γ) = C c c (Γ). Cl p (Γ) = Cλ (Γ) for every p [1,2]. C (Γ) = C D (Γ) if and only if there exists a seuence (h n) of positive definite functions in D such that h n 1. If C (Γ) = C l p (Γ) for some p [1, ), then Γ is amenable. Γ has the Haagerup property if and only if C (Γ) = C c 0 (Γ).
FREE GROUP C -ALGEBRAS ASSOCIATED WITH l p 3 3. Positive definite functions on a free group Let F d be the free group on finitely many generators a 1,...,a d with d 2. We denote by s the word length of s F d with respect to the canonical generating set {a 1,a 1 1,...,a d,a 1 }. For k 0, we put d W k = {s F d : s = k}. We denote by χ k the characteristic function for W k. In the following lemma, the case where = 2 is given by Haagerup in [5, Lemma 1.3]. His proof also works for [1,2] by using Hölder s ineuality, instead of Cauchy-Schwarz ineuality. We remark that this is also appeared in [1]. Lemma 3.1. Let [1,2]. Let k,l and m be non negative integers. Let f and g be functions on F d such that supp(f) W k and supp(g) W l, respectively. If k l m k +l and k +l m is even, then and if m is any other value, then (f g)χ m f g, (f g)χ m = 0. Proof. It is shown by an argument similar as in [5, Lemma 1.3]. However for convenience, we give the complete proof. Note that (f g)(s) = f(t)g(u) = f(t)g(u). t,u F d s=tu t =k u =l s=tu Since the possible values of tu are k l, k l +2,...,k +l, we have (f g)χ m = 0 for any other values of m. The case where = 1 is trivial. So we consider the case where 1. First we assume that m = k+l. In this case, if s = m, then s can be uniuely written as a product tu with t = k and u = l. Hence Therefore (f g)χ m = tu =k+l t =k u =l (f g)(s) = f(t)g(u). f(t) g(u) f(t) g(u) = f g. t =k u =l Next we assume that m = k l, k l +2,...,k+l 2. In these cases, we have m = k+l 2j for 1 j min{k,l}. Let s = tu with s = m, t = k and u = l. Then s can be uniuely written as a product t u such that t = t v, u = v 1 u with t = k j, u = l j and v = v 1 = j. We define 1 f (t) = f(tv) if t = k j, and f (t) = 0 otherwise.
4 RUI OKAYASU We also define g (u) = 1 g(v 1 u) if u = l j, and g (u) = 0 otherwise. Note that supp(f ) W k j and supp(g ) W l j. Moreover f = f(tv) = f, t =k j andsimilarly g = g. Takearealnumberpwith 1/p+1/ = 1. Since 1 < 2, we have 2 p <. In particular, p. Thanks to Hölder s ineuality, (f g)(s) = f(t)g(u) t =k u =l s=tu = f(t v)g(v 1 u ) 1 1 f(t v) p g(v 1 u ) p 1 f(t v) g(v 1 u ) = f (t )g (u ) = (f g )(s). Hence (f g)χ m (f g )χ m. Since (k j)+(l j) = m, it follows from the first part of the proof that (f g)χ m (f g )χ m f g = f g. In the following lemma, the case where p = = 2 is given in the proof of [4, Theorem 1]. Lemma 3.2. Let 1 p with 1/p + 1/ = 1. Let π be a unitary representation of Γ on a Hilbert space H with a cyclic vector ι such that π ξ,ξ l p (Γ). Then for f c c (Γ). π(f) liminf n 1 (f f) ( 2n) 4n 1
FREE GROUP C -ALGEBRAS ASSOCIATED WITH l p 5 Proof. Let f c c (Γ). In the proof of [4, Theorem 1], the following formula is obtained: ( ) 1 4n π(f) = sup lim (f f) ( 2n) (s) π(s)π(g)ξ,π(g)ξ. g c n c(γ) s Γ Fix g c c (Γ) and we put ϕ(s) = π(s)π(g)ξ,π(g)ξ. Note that ϕ(s) = π(s)π(g)ξ,π(g)ξ = t,u F d g(u)π ξ,ξ (u 1 st)g(t) = (g π ξ,ξ g )(s), where g (s) = g(s 1 ). Conseuently, π ξ,ξ l p (Γ) implies ϕ l p (Γ). Then by Hölder s ineuality, (f f) (2n) (f (s)ϕ(s) f) (2n) ϕ p. s Γ Therefore it follows that π(f) liminf n 1 (f f) ( 2n) 4n. By combining Lemma 3.1 and Lemma 3.2, we can prove the following. Lemma 3.3. Let k be a non negative integer. Let 1 p with 1/p+1/ = 1. If a unitary representation π of F d on a Hilbert space H has a cyclic vector ξ such that π ξ,ξ l p (F d ), then for f c c (F d ) with supp(f) W k. π(f) (k +1) f. Proof. Thecasewhere = 1andp = istrivial. Sowemayassumethat1 < 2 and 2 p < with 1/p+1/ = 1. It is also shown by an argument similar as in [5, Lemma 1.4]. We consider the norm (f f) ( 2n). Write f 2j 1 = f and f 2j = f for j = 1,2,...,2n. Then (f f) ( 2n) = f 1 f 2 f 4n. We also denote g = f 2 f 4n. So we have (f f) ( 2n) = f 1 g. Note that supp(f j ) W k for j = 1,2,...,4n and g c c Put g l = gχ l. Then supp(g l ) W l and g = g l. Here, remark that g l = 0 for all but finitely many l. Moreover set h = f 1 g = f 1 g l and h m = hχ m. Then h c c (F d ) and h = l=0 l=0 h m. m=0
6 RUI OKAYASU Here, notice that h m = 0 for all but finitely many m. By Lemma 3.1, (f 1 g l )χ m f 1 g l in the case where k l m k +l and k +l m is even. We also have (f 1 g l )χ m = 0 for any other values of m. Hence h m = 1 g l )χ m l=0(f (f 1 g l )χ m By writing l = m+k 2j, Then min{m,k} h m f 1 f 1 l=0 m+k = f 1 min{m,k} (k +1) 1 p f1 h = h m m=0 l= m k m+k l even g m+k 2j (k +1) p f1 = (k +1) p f1 = (k +1) p f1 (k +1) p f1 g m+k 2j min{m,k} m=0 k m=j k g l. 1 min{m,k} 1 p g m+k 2j min{m,k} 1. g m+k 2j g m+k 2j l=k j k g = (k +1) p +1 f 1 g. Hence f 1 g (k +1) f 1 g, i.e., g l f 1 (f 2 f 4n ) (k +1) f 1 f 2 f 4n. 1 p
FREE GROUP C -ALGEBRAS ASSOCIATED WITH l p 7 Moreover, we inductively get (f f) ( 2n) (k +1) 4n 1 f 4n. Therefore it follows from Lemma 3.2 that 1 π(f) liminf (f f) ( 2n) n 4n (k +1) f. For a function ϕ on Γ, we denote the corresponding linear functional on c c (Γ) by ω ϕ (f) = s Γf(s)ϕ(s) for f c c (Γ). Note that ϕ is positive definite if and only if the functional ω ϕ extends to a positive linear functional on C (Γ), (see, e.g., [3, Theorem ]). Nowwecangiveacharacterizationofpositivedefinite functionsonf d, whichcan be extended to the positive linear functionals on C l p (F d ) for any p [2, ). The case of C λ (F d) is given in [5, Theorem 3.1]. We remind the reader that C λ (F d) = C l 2 Hence the following theorem is a generalization to the case of C l p (F d ) for any p [2, ). For 0 < α < 1, we set ϕ α (s) = α s, and it is positive definite on F d by [5, Lemma 1.2]. Theorem 3.4. Let 2 p <. Let ϕ be a positive definite function on F d. Then the following conditions are euivalent: (1) ϕ can be extended to the positive linear functional on C l p (2) sup k ϕχ k p (k +1) 1 <. (3) The function s ϕ(s)(1+ s ) 1 2 p belongs to lp (4) For any α (0,1), the function s ϕ(s)α s belongs to l p Proof. Without lossofgenerality, we mayassume that ϕ(e) = 1. The proofis based on the one in [5, Theorem 3.1]. (1) (2): It follows from (1) that ω ϕ extends to the state on C l p Hence for f c c (F d ), we have ω ϕ (f) f lp Put Then Notice that f = ϕ p 2 ϕχ k. ω ϕ (f) = ϕχ k p p. f lp = sup{ π(f) : π is an l p -representation}. Let π be an l p -representation of F d on a Hilbert space H with a dense subspace H 0. Then π(f) 2 = sup π(f f)ξ,ξ H. ξ H 0 ξ =1 Fix ξ H 0 with ξ = 1. We denote by σ the restriction of π onto the subspace H σ = span{π(s)ξ : s F d } H.
8 RUI OKAYASU Then π(f f)ξ,ξ H = σ(f f)ξ,ξ Hσ. Note that ξ is cyclic for σ such that σ ξ,ξ l p Take a real number with 1/p+1/ = 1. Since 2 p <, we have 1 < 2. By Lemma 3.3, Hence Therefore we obtain namely, Conseuently, (2) (3): s F d ϕ(s) p (1+ s ) p 2 = σ(f) (k +1) f. σ(f f) = σ(f) 2 (k +1) 2 f 2. f 2 l p (k +1) 2 f 2 = (k +1)2 ϕχ k 2(p 1) p, f lp (k +1) ϕχ k p 1 p. = ϕχ n p k +1. ϕ(s) p (1+k) p 2 k=0 s =k ϕχ k p p (1+k) p (1+k) 2 k=0 { } p sup ϕχ k p (k +1) 1 k k=0 1 (k +1) 2 <. (3) (4): Easy. (4) (1): Note that ψ α (s) = ϕ(s)α s is also positive definite. By the GNS construction, we obtain the unitary representation σ α of F d with the cyclic vector ξ α such that ψ α (s) = σ α (s)ξ α,ξ α. Since σ α is an l p -representation, ψ α can be seen as a state on Cl p By taking the weak- limit of ψ α as α ր 1, we conclude that ϕ can be extended to the state on Cl p Corollary 3.5. Let p [2, ) and α (0,1). The positive definite function ϕ α can be extended to the state on C l p (F d ) if and only if α (2d 1) 1 p. Proof. Note that ϕ α l p (F d ) (2d 1) k 1 α pk < k=1 (2d 1)α p < 1 α < (2d 1) 1 p. Hence the corollary follows from Theorem 3.4.
FREE GROUP C -ALGEBRAS ASSOCIATED WITH l p 9 Remark 3.6. Let π α be the GNS representationof ϕ α. Then π α is weakly contained in λ if and only if α (2d 1) 1 2. For α > (2d 1) 1 2, we refer the reader to [7] and [8]. As a conseuence, we can obtain the following result. See also [2, Proposition 4.4]. Corollary 3.7. For 2 < p, the canonical uotient map from C l p (F d ) onto C l (F d ) is not injective. Proof. It suffices to consider the case where p, because F d is not amenable. Suppose that the canonical uotient map from C l p (F d ) onto C l (F d ) is injective for some < p. Take a real number α with By using Corollary 3.5, (2d 1) 1 < α (2d 1) 1 p. ω ϕα (f) f lp = f l for f c c Therefore it follows that ϕ α can be also extended to the state on Cl (F d ), but it contradicts to the choice of α. Remark 3.8. The previous result has also shown by N. Higson and N. Ozawa, independently. See also [2, Remark 4.5]. In [6], Powers proves that C λ (F 2) has a uniue tracial state. In [5], Haagerup gives another proof of the uniueness. Thanks to Theorem 3.4, Haagerup s argument also works for the case of C l p Corollary 3.9. For each p [2, ), the C -algebra C l p (F d ) has a uniue tracial state τ λ p, where λ p is the canonical uotient map C l p (F d ) onto C λ (F d) and τ is the uniue tracial state on C λ (F d). Proof. Any tracial state on Cl p (F d ) corresponds a positive definite function on F d. Take such a positive definite function ϕ. Then ϕ K is constant for any conjugacy class K in F d. Take a conjugacy class K in F d such that K {e}. Put k = min{ s : s K}. Then W k+2n K (2d 1) n 1 for n 1. Hence if ϕ K = C for some non-zero constant C, then ϕ(s) p α p s = C p α pn C p (2d 1) n 1 α pn = s C n=0s W k+2n K n=0 for α (2d 1) 1 p. This contradicts (4) in Theorem 3.4. We define two algebraic ideals by D p (Γ) = ε>0l p ε (Γ) for 1 < p, and D + p (Γ) = ε>0l p+ε (Γ) for 1 p <. Note that l (Γ) D p (Γ) l p(γ) for 1 < p, and l p (Γ) D + p (Γ) l (Γ) for 1 p <. Then we also obtain the following.
10 RUI OKAYASU Corollary (1) For 2 p <, the C -algebra Cl p (F d ) is canonically isomorphic to C (F D p + d ). In particular, Cλ (F d) = C (F D + d ). 2 (2) For 2 < p, the C -algebra Cl p (F d ) is canonically isomorphic to C (F Dp d ). In particular, C (F d ) = C D (F d ). Proof. (1) It suffices to show that if ϕ is a positive definite function on F d which can be extended the positive linear functional on C (F D p + d ), then ϕ can be also extended to the one on Cl p Now assume that ϕ is a positive definite function on F d, which can be extend to the positive linear functional on C D + p Then for any (p, ), ϕ can be also extended to the positive linear functional on Cl By Theorem 3.4, ϕϕ α l (F d ) for any α (0,1). We set r = p p. Then 1/p = 1/+1/r. If wetake (2d 1) 2/r < β < (2d 1) 1/r, then ϕ β l r Since ϕϕ α ϕ β p ϕϕ α ϕ β r, we have ϕϕ α ϕ β l p Namely (ϕϕ β )ϕ α l p (F d ) for any α (0,1). Thus ϕϕ β can be extended to the positive linear functional on C l p If ց p, then r ր and β ր 1. Hence ϕϕ β ϕ in the weak- topology. Therefore ϕ can be also extended to the positive linear functional on C l p (2) The proof is uite similar as in (1). Assume that ϕ is a positive definite function on F d which can be extended to the positive linear functional on C l p By Theorem 3.4, we have ϕϕ α l p (F d ) for any α (0,1). For any [2,p), we set r = p p. Then 1/ = 1/p+1/r. If wetake (2d 1) 2/r < β < (2d 1) 1/r, then ϕ β l r Since ϕϕ α ϕ β ϕϕ α p ϕ β r, we have ϕϕ α ϕ β l Namely, (ϕϕ β )ϕ α l (F d ) for any α (0,1). Thus ϕϕ β can be extended to the positive linear functional on Cl (F d ), and so ϕϕ β can be extended to the one on C (F Dp d ). If ր p, then r ր and β ր 1. Hence ϕϕ β ϕ in the weak- topology. Therefore ϕ can be also extended to the positive linear functional on C (F Dp d ). Remark The isomorphism Cλ (Γ) = C D + (Γ) has been already obtained in [2] 2 for any Γ. References 1. M.
